You spoony bard!

So according to you, what did Tellah mean with ‘spoony’?
Speculate and just see this as a fun intended thread, not some serious thread to have an argument about the word spoony :p

I’ve always believed that it meant something like stupid.

I think in the Japanese original it was "You son of a bitch" or something along those lines, but like many of the classic FFs it was toned down everywhere else. Spoony would probably be "You idiot of a bard!" Not sure, I would have preffered it to be in it’s original form though, much like alot of stuff in VI… but that’s another story.

I always thought it was "idiot" but now that you think about it….Spoony? Sounds very lame….Damn you Censorship!

Well it was definitely the best quote of the game. I always thought spoony as crazy of courseI think I read somewhere the localization team had to censor theoriginal word so they translated the old word into spoony or something like that. But Im glad this famous insult was put into the game. Tellah Rocks!

I always considered "spoony" to be stupid whenever I play through FF4. It makes sense.

Spoony is probably an insult… somewhere.. most likely Britain. They have weird insults like that.

I’ve used SPOON as an insult. "You Spoon!" But never spoony. Yeah, okay, so maybe that’s pushing things…

As to what Spoony means, give me a minute to think of a stupid story to explain it…

… It all began in the 1950s just after the war when Japan was re-building. An unknown Japanese entrepreneur known as Shinji started off his life as a door to door Spoons salesman. His company was not very successful, because Shinji didn’t realise that at this point in time, the Japanese weren’t too interested in spoons, they were more concerned about important stuff like water, food, clothes and shelter.

Shinji was a persistant man though. After going around all the houses he could and not getting one order, he sat in his room and thought up an advertising campaign. One that would sell him drawer full of spoons.

The idea? A cartoon character called Spoony.

Alas, like a lot of mascots, Spoony was crap. Shinji went out of business, and sold his assets (namely the mascot Spoony) to an unknown source who just so happened to open up a software company called Squaresoft. Seeing the unique crapness of the mascot he had bought, the owner of Square decided to use the word Spoony as an insult.

And this, my dear friends, is why Spoony is used in "You Spoony Bard." It is an obscure reference to that spoon selling mascot.

I found to spoon with a meaning like to cuddle! So… maybe Tellah wanted to say:
"You cuddly bard!!", and was not mad at him at all… no, he was in love with him! 🙂

Well when you think about the designs of a spoon it could be a head and neck of a person. But at the curve of the spoon there is no room for a brain is there!!
Thus causin a spoon to be stupid cos theres no brain on a spoon
So it probably means that, OK there is no chance of it!

But it aint british well i’ve never come across it although Nonse is the ultimate one.

I did some research by searching "slang dictionary" on google and came up with a website ( http://www.peevish.co.uk/slang/ ) which said that "spoon" (as previously mentioned by Bahamut Zero) is:

Verb. 1. To nestle against one another in bed whilst both facing the same way. [Mid 1800s]
2. To miss hit a ball during a sporting activity. E.g."He only had the goalkeeper to beat and he spooned it!"
Noun. An idiot, a foolish person.

So there you have it folks.

…And was that stuff about the mascot really real? I mean.. I’m tempted to laugh but.. I dunno. I can’t tell if you’re kidding lol.

It could possibly be another mistranslation since that happened a lot back when the games were first translated. it happened in other games, but this one is very unusual.
