So which old rpg’s are your favourite? By saying old I mean NES/SNES/SEGA old. Or any other you can thing of.
I remember my countless hours being engrossed into Zelda: A Link To The Past on the SNES. That is still my fave and I’ll never ever stop playing that. It was also my very first rpg.
After technology had evolved I discovered the ever so amazing emu. Which enables me to play more rpg’s from that time period.
So far I am most impressed by the likes of…
Chrono Trigger (of course!)
Terranigma
Lufia I & II
Secret of Mana
…and many others. I really should check them over and find out what else had me hooked.
If anyone can recommend any others to me that would be most apprieciated.
The game was absolutely amazing, you choose from 6 people as your main character, and then you play as that persons story, you also pick from the other 5 to be your 2 companions throughout the game, each has their OWN abilities and job classes, but the classes BRANCH, so you go from say Mage to Dark Mage or Light Mage, then from say, Light Mage to like Paladin or something (those aren’t in the game however…), so the customization of your party is endless!
It is by far one of my favorite games!!!
I suggest everyone here hunts down a copy (or test a ROM, but remember to delete cuz they illegal after 24. hrs…)
We talked about this in chat today.
I have to say Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 3 are GODLIKE, the story, the characters everything is just great. Also I really like FF3 (FF6 in USA), it’s one of the ebst (next to FF7 imo :p).
I need to play Chrono Trigger. I’ll start tonight. I promise.
anyway, this game ruled. excellent beyond words. i love it. if it was a woman, i would have had 20 kids by now.
Another old rpg is Heroes of might and magic, even though its on the computer I think it qualifies for this thread seeing as it came out around 94/95
I need to play Chrono Trigger. I’ll start tonight. I promise.
I shall remind you. 😉
Ahem. Chrono Trigger. Yeah, it does not really count as OLD for me because I did not even know about its existence before 1999, but its the one game that still got me excited after 4 years…
Secret of Mana? I loved it and still do, but ever since I played Seiken Densetsu 3… well… you know.
Chrono Trigger and SD3… my favourites forever.
My favourite RPG still is Breath of Fire II on the SNES. The gameplay was good, and the battle system (at the time) was pretty good and easy to use. The music was alright, although it did get to the point I muted the TV. Hard bosses, good characters, good storyline made me come back to this game, even today.
Another good RPG I played a lot of is Mystaria : Realms of Lore for the Sega Saturn. One of the first 3-D RPG/Strategy games around (I think. Not sure though.), I remember playing this game back in 93-94, and it was awesome. Thing is, I didn’t have a Saturn at the time, and had to play the game at a friends place. Now, almost 10 years later, I can say I have a working Saturn, with heaps of games (As well as all three Evangelion games.) as well as the one game I’ve been hunting for, for ages : Mystaria : Realms of Lore.
The Phantasy Star games were quite good and enjoyable as well, yes?
There was Lufia II though, which still on certain rainy days keeps me occupied xD
I think two of my favorite RPG’s would have to be…
Super Mario RPG: Who would of though a Mario RPG could be this good? There’s still that old hint of platform jumping and such, but from an 3/4 Overhead view. This game made me believe if you put Square with Nintendo, you’d get a great game, no doubt. For some reason, I just couldn’t get that feeling from FF1…no my friends, SMRPG is a godly game. Even more so when you actually buy the game (I imagine it’s probably hard as hell on an emulator…all those jumps and stuff…x_x)
And my secon is
Dragon Warrior: As simple as it may be, it’s still great. The second and third and the follow ups were good, but this was the root of it all. And let me tell you, this game should not fail to entertain you. It has most aspects of a regular RPG…fight, gaining levels, equipping weapons/armor, find old relics, etc….the game is just classic. Absolutely classic.
I got Seiken Densetsu 3, but never played it…x_X
Arcana
Final Fantasy 3
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Final Fantasy 2
Earthbound
some of my favorite old-skewl rpgz
Errk, Sorry, I wasn’t really looking at the dates :-/
If it isn’t on the first or second page of the forum then DON’T BOTHER please.
But if you means SNES’s too, i’ll go with TLoZ: A Link to the Past. Whyich dates back to 1991-2.
I love Zelda.
I think the first I played was secret of mana when I was 5 or 6. I don’t remember much about it….is it even an rpg?
Lufia I
Lufia II
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger
SD3 (never got far in it though v.v)
FFVI
FFV
FFIV
FFII
FFI
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
That’s all I can remember…. for now o.x
I don’t include Zelda ’cause that’s more an adventure game..
But at least you beat it. I never got passed this last fu***ing boss. Anyway i’ve come to a point where I love and Hate that game at the same time. ain’t it strange ?:eye:
Or you know, way old topics more than x months old could be locked when they’re found. Relax.
Anyhow, I think this is kind of interesting.
I remember playing the 1st Breath of Fire and never finishing it, and I haven’t to this day. It’s one of those games buried in my backlog that starts with the NES and goes until the current gen systems. I’ll probably never get to it since there are new games I’m still working on and that I’ll probably never finish.
I also played an obscure game called BrainLord. This one was an Enix game and it was supposed to play something like Legend of Zelda but with more and more difficult puzzles. It really didn’t turn out to be a great game in its story, but it was alright.
If you don’t care about, don’t read it, man. I cannot stand people who post only to point at the others like 5 years old kiddos in kindergarten…:eye:
and to avoid a double post, i’ll also answer to the other crtin: I have double posted. so what ? I’ve been inscribed here for 2, maybe 3 months, and i did not thought this place to be so hostile. :notgood:
Last thing. I’m not a moron. you are.
Good bye.
Moron.
Moron.
And he calls that debating skill…Call me anything you want, this will prove only one thing: that you are an I.D.I.O.T.
Now if you excuse me i’v e got much more interesting things to do. like finishing to write my COC campaign.
Moron.
Star Tropics
Final Fantasy Legend I
Final Fantasy III
Secret of Mana
Act Raiser
Earthbound
Chrono Trigger
*I hate the dolphin in Star Tropics. And the main character is named Mike Jones lol
Final Fantasy III(NES)
Final Fantasy IV-VI (SNES)
Breath Of Fire 1 & 2 (SNES/GBA)
Sword Of Mana
Tales Of Phantasia
Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past
The list goes on however these were definately my favourites, I’m sure I’m missing a few still, oh well. I’m not sure if this one is old or a classic yet but I really enjoyed Grandia, I have yet to finish all these games except Zelda but I will get around to it once schools over :D.
The game that make me love the rpgs was Castlevania S.O.T.N., that was the game that make me enter to the rpg world haha.
With the emulators I’ve played a lot more, games for NES & SNES specially, like Aretha I & II, Arcana, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy I, etc.
Long live to 2D RPGs!!!!!!!
Strongly agreed, and fortunately 2D RPGs are still being made for hand-held consoles and maybe a few still on other platforms, and especially some amateur game developers seem to like making 2D RPGs but they lack the commercial quality of a game. The snes in my opinion was a great foundation for those 2D rpgs we came to know and love, sure the NES had a few great titles but the snes was the console to really deliver it.
Thank you, good sir. You truly are a king among these Japanese role-playing games.
keep fighting the good fight, o brave internet warrior.
– Seiken Densetsu 3
– Chrono Trigger
– Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen
– Romancing SaGa 3
– Terranigma
– Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
I’m sure there are others.
I love the old RPG’s, they will never go stale, and most of them top RPG’s coming out today!
Point is this: unless something dramatic happens in how the entire world gaming populace defines an RPG and then that same dramatic event locks down an exact definition, we’ll be at the same place we are now. I guess it’s more of a language issue, in terms of the dynamics of what defines a word.
Personally, RPGs should probably be broken down into subcategories. They’ve done that with shooters, flight games and driving games, so there’s no reason why it can’t be done with RPGs.
Frankly, whether or not it’s misleading, I don’t see it becoming an issue just yet. I have yet to be fooled into buying a game I didn’t want because it was miscategorized.
But whatever, it’s not a big deal. There are a lot more things in this world to get upset about and try to cause a movement over than the definition of a genre within a realm of entertainment/art.
I’ve actually traced the history of inaccuracy in the term somewhere in this forum. I’ll leave it to you to find that if you’re interested.
The For-Dummies version is that Japanese developers attempted to adapt the mechanics of games like Dungeons & Dragons for use in video games. However, they were unfamiliar with the games that the actual mechanics originated from and mistook those mechanics for the defining characteristics of RPGs. The true defining characteristic of a role-playing game, per the term’s original and most accurate definition, lies in free-form character development and interactions.
As their games spread across the world, so too did their misinterpretation of the genre.

It doesn’t have to be something dramatic. All that needs to happen is for those who know and care about the truth behind the matter to speak up and spread the word. As knowledge spreads, change occurs gradually and naturally.

That’s already been done, but unsuccessfully. All it’s doing is further devaluing the meaning of the term as it is applied to more and more games that loosely fit the criteria of one specific so-called subgenre.

If something like this ever reaches the point where it becomes a huge issue, it’ll be far too late to fix it. And frankly, with an ever-growing number of people misusing the term on a daily basis, it’s approaching that point alarmingly fast.
But whatever, it’s not a big deal. There are a lot more things in this world to get upset about and try to cause a movement over than the definition of a genre within a realm of entertainment/art.
Bullshit. If something’s wrong, someone has to try to fix it. There are plenty of people already campaigning for the big issues. It’s the little ones that desperately need champions.
Its a matter of one mistake, and the language evolving after it. You speaking up about it constantly really doesn’t drive me (or anyone, really, besides a few people who like to kiss ass) to refer to them as their "truly proper name".
Racism is generally a misnomer, if you want to go that route. As far as I know, a "true" race, is the human race. Not "black", "white", etc. But because it is so widely accepted and still used, no one really cares. Its a minor evolution in the language. People understand it.
I get your point, but instead of posting in every effing thread that has the incorrect usage of the term RPG, could you put it in one thread? I can’t stand seeing it all the time. I really don’t see the misusage of a genre that is SO widely accepted as an issue, big or small.
It’s not a secret that I dislike the improper use of the term and that I think it will eventually be damaging, hence I will point it out where I feel it is appropriate. I think you’ll find that very feel people find me out of line for it as long as I’m not shitting up half a dozen threads at a time with it or starting huge arguments over the matter in threads that are unrelated. And in case you haven’t noticed, I’ve made mention of it very few times in recent months.
I guess I just see it as one of those things that probably isn’t going to change anytime soon, and if it doesn’t.. who cares? Music genres have been misused and evolved to encompass a bunch of different things. As long as it is recognized correctly, what harm is done? I feel like every time I check new threads or posts that use the word "RPG" in them, I can expect a post from you discussing the misuse.
I’m not accusing you of Narmor’ing threads or anything. I don’t think you are incorrect, and I don’t necessarily disagree. But I do think that people get the point, and its to the point where its beating a dead horse. meh, its probably just a personal pet peeve or something for me.

You’re really not fouling the thread here either, despite our opposing views. It’s a lot like some people calling a pistol magazine or a rifle magazine (an actual enclosed object that contains bullets) a "clip". It really irks a lot of shooters I know, and it nags at me a little, but I usually don’t pay it any mind since in my head, I know what they’re talking about. I have yet to have a friend of mine ask for a rifle clip (when he uses an Armalite) and have another one of my pals hand him an actual clip of 5-8 rounds.
