Lodoss is quite well-known, greatly popular all over the world, a classic. One of the first… well, the third manga I ever bought (Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, I liked it, but the ending was pathetic)…
There is more to Lodoss than just the 13-part OVA and the TV series (which isn’t merely a continuation, but rather, an alternative).
Legend of Chrystania is another anime from the Lodoss universe…
There are several manga series of varying quality… Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, Deedlit’s Story, The Grey Witch, The Lady of Pharis… probably more, but I’m not a walking encyclopedia.
And I’m not the Lodoss fan here, I should leave this all for Dave to answer. 😛
I just have to say Parn is very very annoying, but all the other characters are cool.

Then why did you already answer almost everything there is to know ? 😉
Well, look guys, as far as I know, like it or not, Lodoss is what’s defining the "fantasy anime" standard right now. Depending on whether or not you’re into that thing or not, it’s a good or bad thing. You may bitch about the many clichs, but that’s like bitchin’ about the clichs in turn-based console RPGs.
As for you Vanga, the only animes that were released involving Lodoss were the OAV, Chronicles of the Heroic Knight and Legend of Crystania. As for the mangas, I don’t really know more than Anna already said. Your best bet is trying to find out if Ryo Mizuno’s novels ever got translated into English. That’s the best story you could get.
I know I’ve seen scans from a Lodoss manga once, which looked absolutely beautiful. Sadly, I forgot the title, and cannot find it anymore. Anyone help me…?
And yeah. Lodoss is probably to fantasy anime what Lord of the Rings is to fantasy literature. The classic stuff. 😛
