Which game was the one to introduce you into the world of rpgs?
The first rpg that I ever played was Final Fantasy I. I didn’t beat it until later, when I was a little older though.
The first rpg that I ever beat was FFIV, as FFII on the SNES.
The rpg that really made me fall in love with rpgs and gaming in general though, was FFVI.

The first RPG that I can remember playing was FFIV/FFII. I was a simple child then, so I decided to give it a try. And I was pleased that I did.

I’m not sure but it was either:
The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of TIme
or
Final Fantasy Tactics
It depends on wether or not you consider Zelda to be an rpg.
I’m a late bloomer when it comes to rpg’s, I’ve been playing videogames since before I knew how to speak, but I only played realtime strategy, flight sims, FPS’s, racing, etc. I basically avoided rpg’s because I didn’t understand them, or didn’t bother to understand them, Final Fntasy tactics was the furthest I went in an rpg, and Zelda wasn’t turn-based, so I played the whole way through.
I was introduced to final fantasy VERY slowy. Final Fantasy Tactics was the first one I played, I got my hands on a demo of xenogears, and I used to watch somebody play FFIX (don’t remember who)
When I was officially introduced to squaresoft and knew very well that this was final fantasy… it was 10, I rented it, loved it and was compelled to try the older games made by squaresoft, I went backwards and played FF1, FF6, FF4, FF5, FF9, and FF7, with chrono trigger, chrono cross, and xenogears all thrown in there, I know it happened over a years worth of time but I’m a huge square fan now.
EDIT: whoa, didn’t mean to type my videogame’s, life story, guess it all just kinda rolled off my tongue.

Mine was Secret of Mana. Ahh, how I love that game. I was introduced to it in the forth grade and fell in love with gereral RPGs. The second I played was Final Fantasy VII. I can’t remember what the next ones were, but Chrono Trigger was in their somewhere ^_^
It was Dragon Quest 3, I loved it cause it got a lot of stuff to do a part from main story and even after finishing the game, the story and its battle system are pretty simple though.
What took me into the rpg world was definitely FF7, after finishing this game I started playing RPG games mainly.

Mine was a really old text-based role-playing game on an apple computer based in the Sherlock Holmes world. You played as Watson, trying to make your way through the story with absolutely no help whatsoever.
But you could ask Holmes for help occasionally, and he’d tell you what to do, with snappy british-humor retorts.
And if you did something to kill anyone, there was always a funny little line about how it was a bad idea.
And if you killed Holmes himself, the cop that arrested you would say something like "There has been many a time I’ve wanted to do that myself, but I’ve still got to arrest you."
Hilarious.

Oh that’s right, Super Mario RPG is the first one I played knowing well that it was an rpg, because the game was so easy and simple I easily learned about exp points, leveling up, turn-based, etc.

My first real RPG (with levelling, experience, equipment and stuff) was Final Fantasy VII.
I was brought up on text and graphic adventures though – from humble beginnings like Zork through to LucasArts’ legendary SCUMM games. Monkey Island 1 & 2 rock my world.
Yeah, storyline’s always been the most important thing for me.

My first RPG was Shining Force 2 on the Megadrive. I remember renting it for a week and getting stuck at this one bit. Then I found it in a shop for sale and snapped it up with little thought. I got to that same bit and was still stuck until I realised where the item that I needed was. Then I pwned it.
๐ I loved Shining Force 2.

Also: crazy.
I played some old text/adventure games, but those weren’t RPGs, so… I don’t actually remember what my first RPG was.
I got Final Fantasy around the time it came out, but I remember knowing what type of game it was and I got it because I already had an interest in them . Back then I called them "Walk around and talk to people in towns" games.
hmm… I know I played it before FF, and since it’s one of the best games ever and sorta RPG-ish, I’ll say: THE GUARDIAN LEGEND!!!

If I could remember the name of that old Text RPG, Mandi, I’d tell you what it was and such.
But as it is, I don’t remember.
All I can remember is that it was on one of those old 5 1/4" floppies and ran on one of those old Apple II computers (one of those deals where it was monitor, keyboard and floppy drive all in one piece. No hard drive whatsoever) at the daycare I was at many moons ago. I was the weird kid reading the computer game on the Apple instead of playing Super Mario Bros. on the NES for the thousandth time like the other kids.
And rezo, were any of those games set in London, with ol’ Sherlock Holmes?

yeah i know this is lame but spare me i was young. first real rpg was ff7, completly and utterly devoted, worshiped, enthralled, and consumed with it for almost two years. i was first exposed to a demo of 8 at my cousins house, he had the demo and showed me a dual shock controller, weirded me out. wasnt later that i realized what the hell i had witnessed when he summoned leviathan. with in a year i had passed everyone i knew in terms of playing time and number of games. i stuck to square rpgs for a long time, untill i found a whole bunch of pc games, ie nwn, icewind dale.

Mine was either an old board game called Hero (or Hero’s, not sure) Quest, which apparently is based on a D&D style of play, or Dragon Warrior I on the NES. I’m not sure which came out first, though. Whichever was in stores first is the one that I played first. As far as console games go, obviously it is Dragon Warrior I, as I said, and it couldn’t really be any other game because it was the first RPG for a consol, ever. As it stands Dragon Warrior IV is still my favorite RPG to this day.

I skipped around on the NES between Mario and Zelda, until a friend of mine sold their NES to help pay for a SNES and gave me Crystalis because he said it was a lot like Zelda. So I played it, and I still love the goddamn game. I also got FFI which I played, but didn’t beat until AFTER SoM or Chrono Trigger…mostly because I sucked and kept it in a box for YEARS while I played with my new SNES.

A little game called Battletech: The Crescent Hawk’s Inception for the PC. Played it in what must have been 1991, and by then it was already 4 years old. It was a sort of adventure/strategy RPG and the first video game dealing with the battletech universe, which eventually spawned the Mech Warrior games.
Had no idea what an RPG was at the time, and didn’t play any others for 7 years when I first played a game that I actually new was an RPG: FF7.

If you consider Zelda a Link to the Past an rpg, I’d say that was my first but I mean if you consider oral… ahhh I mean the first real rpg I played was Super Mario RPG (…decently sure that was an rpg). I then went on Squaresoft binge with FF7, Parasite Eve, and Brave Fencer Musashi all within a pretty narrow time frame (there were others but if it didn’t last long its hard to remember their names…). That was back when the the gaming intelligence agency was up: www.thegia.com . That was totally my favorite site back in the day. I think I was really open to games at that time (like 12-14) and the games were like a thousand times more affecting because of my age. Those games convinced me to get into programming which is something thats become more than just a hobby.

I remember buying Final Fantasy X at GameStop (or Software Ect., as it was called back in the day) for the cheap price of twenty-five dollars (because it was used and old). My friend had mentioned this game to me at school earlier, telling me how cool and exciting it was. So, I took his advice and bought it. This was my first ever RPG; since that day, I’ve loved RPG’s.

My first RPG was Phantasy Star II For the sega genisis. O’ it was wonderful, I recently got a gameboy advance version of it that includes, I, II, and III. It is awesome. They are all great games and are were huge steps in the RPG gameing world. I think Phantasy Star I was the first ever RPG were you could SAVE your game, oooooo, aahhhh! That was playable on the Atari. Hee hee old school ay?
Happy posting!
~Zook01~
Mine was either an old board game called Hero (or Hero’s, not sure) Quest, which apparently is based on a D&D style of play, or Dragon Warrior I on the NES. I’m not sure which came out first, though. Whichever was in stores first is the one that I played first. As far as console games go, obviously it is Dragon Warrior I, as I said, and it couldn’t really be any other game because it was the first RPG for a consol, ever. As it stands Dragon Warrior IV is still my favorite RPG to this day.
HAHA!
I remember Hero Quest!
I got that game for my 6th birthday!

FF1 was my first RPG. I was like, nine, when I got it, and I was so hooked on it. My folks had to take my NES away from me b/c I wouldn’t do my homework or ANYTHING else but play FF. And THEN I got my hands on FFVI for SNES. I went from gamer to full-on hardcore RPG’er in about .9 seconds. I still get goosebumps in the opening scene of FFVI-the music is just uber.

And Ryu from BoFII also kinda fascinated me, as well as the battle system at that time ๐ I was about 8 years old and got so hooked up with it, i played it the whole day ๐
My 2nd RPG, and today my favorite, is FFVII, it has always been and will stay the best for me in all eternity ^_^ it’s my fav rpg, with BoFII being second definetly

Little Ninja Brothers for NES was definitely my first. (And one of my favorites still) The first one I REALLY got hooked on was Mario RPG. I’m sure there were some others in between, but at that age all games were called ‘nintendo’. There wasn’t any ‘platformer’, ‘puzzle’, ‘beat-em-up’, or ‘RPG’, at least not for the kids, so that makes it more difficult to recall.

Final Fantasy III(FFVI) for the SNES for me. Started back in ’97 or ’98 iirc. My cousin kept bitching about how good it was, so I went over to his house one day and he started a new game. I was hooked. He wouldn’t lend the console and the game to me tho (I was a Sega Genesis fanboy then), so I ended up playing it on emulation. Of course, back then, most emulators were rather primitive and we had no transparency or windowing, or color addition/subtraction, which made the game looked bad, but still I played it, because it’s storyline was good. Eventually, emulators were as good as the real thing, and by then I was still playing it. In fact, I still have the ROM in my computer’s hard disk now – the very same ROM I downloaded in ’97-’98 and then backed up into ZIP disk, restored, transferred into CD-R, and restored a few times again.
Only in Febuary this year did I finally buy Final Fantasy VI Advance and thus own a completely legit copy of the game. And I’m still playing it, despite having beaten Kefka a few times (and starting over a dozen unfinished games) on the emulated SNES version.

I just checked the dates to make sure I wasn’t insane. The correct answer is Dragon Warrior. It isn’t the first one I finished, but it is the first one I played.
First finished was probably FFI and, like Ndi, VI made me fall in deeply in love with the genre.

Final Fantasy VIII was the first game that introduced me on RPG world!
U know what, I don’t know what to do after the opening FMV, I quit Balamb garden and have no clue what should I do, I’m running around like a lost person on the world map, don’t know how to set up the junction, go to Fire Cavern by curiousity and get killed by Ifrit…>_<
Finally after I learned and beated FFVIII, my friend bring FFVII, and I played and beated it, but FFVII doesn’t give me strong impression and enjoyment of the storytelling like I did on FFVIII, so I guess FFVIII > FFVII, despite many people love FFVII more than FFVIII!! And FFVIII still a gem in my heart of all RPG games that exist nowadays and in future, because without FFVIII, I might don’t know about any RPG at all in my life…

My first RPG was Pokemon Yellow; great fun! , but then I discovered emulators and I promptly beat Earthbound.
I actually have fonder memories of Earthbound, even though it was my second one; though I only vaguely remember it, I recall Poo being the only one who learned to revive other party members (a White Mage AND a Monk? Cool!), so after he died in the final battle and I’d run out of food I realized there was only one way left I could keep my two remaining party members, Ness and Paula, alive.
And I won!
Scripted battles FTW.

I’m saying in terms of gameplay. Action/Adventure is a more appropriate title, considering the linearity of games like the Legend of Zelda. So no need for repetitive grind. If your characters have levels and level up, it’s an RPG. That’s what I’m getting at.
Lord Brimstone
10-04-2008, 07:05 AM
I think what Prak speaks of is the differences between a traditional or "Tabletop" role Playing game, and a Video game RPGs.
A Tabletop RPG, such as Dungeons and Dragons, has you act out the role of a character you created, and interact with the world that is described to you by the Game Master. Character interaction with the world around them is taken care of by talking as the character and using a system of rules to determine if a character succeeds or fails in a given task. The story changes and evolves by the actions the players make as the game goes on.
A video Game RPG on the other hand, has you usually playing a avatar the game creates for you. The Story progresses by the player tactically beating enemies and bosses using the skills given to you, depending on that character’s class, build, etc, and buying gear at shops.
Now while gaining levels, class abilities, and buying gear is about the same as a Tabletop RPG, The big difference comes from the fact that a Video Game RPG is very linear. The game progresses on a set storyline with little to no plot deviation that can be executed by the player. (The "But thou must!" or "the game can’t start until you accept" comes to mind in some so-called "Yes or No" choices given to players in certain games) Also a lot of these games forces you to play a certain character. You can’t choose the look, class, or race of the character.
Now there are exceptions to this rule. FF1, 3, and 5 allowed you to choose your classes and names, Chrono trigger allowed you to beat the last boss "out of Sequence" and gave you a ton of alternate endings, as did Star Ocean. However it wasn’t until games like the Elder scroll series, and to a lesser extent, Kotor, Mass effect and several others, that video games finally captured that "the world is my open sand box" that Tabletop RPG’s gave you.
Now with that large amount of exposition behind us , lets now talk about Prak’s comment of the lines of a RPG being blurred. My opinion of what he means by that goes back to what makes a Video Game RPG what it is. You are playing a Avatar who you play through the games storyline and pretty much read from the script. You have some control of his or her actions and progression through the game through the use of a level system, skill, class, and spell system, and a weapons and armor shop system that is taken from the Tabletop RPG’s.
At some point, it was discovered that this system can be adapted into other game genres and creating hybrids of sorts. The NES Rygar, Magic of Scheherazade, and Zelda 2, where some of the first to employ an experience system to a non RPG game. (you thought I was going to say Castlevania SotN, didn’t you?)
Now With the advent of Action/Adventure games such as Zelda and Metroid, the line started to get blurrier as the Genre grew. You are technically playing an avatar, in a explorable world where you control the outcome of the character more by your decisions. However the engrossing storyline was not yet in place.
Enter Tecmo and the Ninja Gaiden series. This was a platformer action game that had an engrossing storyline outside an RPG and introduced us to Cut-scenes. It was so popular that other games started to adapt it, until finally now, everything seems to have a over the top storyline and some sort of progression system. The way things are now, you can almost classify every modern game as a RPG of some sort. To be honest though, The Pok???mon games are very close to a RPG by the standard terms, except you classes, skills and exp levels are gained by your pet monsters and not you. and it still has a lot of elements of an adventure game.
Prak
10-05-2008, 12:28 AM
Your mistake lies in thinking that the defining characteristic of a role-playing game was the system of levels, replaceable equipment, turn-based combat, etc. It wasn’t. Most or all of those elements existed prior to the creation of the first tabletop RPGs; Dungeons and Dragons was actually heavily based on the rules of a miniatures wargame. The thing that defined the existence of the genre was free-form character development.
Ignorance of this by the Japanese game developers who created titles like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, modeling their gameplay fairly heavily after the rules in tabletop games, led them to misname the genre of their games, and from there, the misnomer passed into popular culture, creating the confusion you speak of.
I go on this little tirade once a year or so. Figured it was that time again. Til next year, folks.
Lord Brimstone
10-05-2008, 01:08 AM
I never said that it was. I said that a traditional RPG has you play the role of a character you yourself created, and interact in a free form environment presented and regulated by the Game Master. The interactions and the decisions the players make, influences that environment around him and creates a ever changing and evolving storyline. The Level, class, and numbers system is only there to help determine wither a player succeeds or not in a certain task or a hostile encounter in a orderly and fair way without the game getting dragged down by hours of "I succeeded! No you didn’t!" Arguments. Unfortunately sooner or later, this happens anyway.
The only reason why I mentioned Levels, classes, and purchasing equipment is that it is one of the only links that exist between some Traditional RPG’s like D&D and a Video Game RPGs. To me Character interactions with other players and the world set before them and how their actions can effect that world around them is the core of a real RPG, not game mechanics.
But I do agree with you that a Classic RPG and a video Game RPG, (especially JRPGs) are two different things and shouldn’t have merged as one.
Edit: I honestly don’t know why I’m making a big deal out of this topic myself. I guess I just miss playing a good RPG. I haven’t played one in a long time. I guess this is my time of the year as well.
Speaking of game mechanics; if you think D&D is too technical with it’s D20 system and rules, you should try Rollmaster. It lives up to its name. It really, really lives up to its name. You ever heard the jokes about a big book of critical and fumble charts and rolling a D1000 on it? Yeah, that was heavily inspired by Rollmaster.
Anyway, that’s enough from me, let the proper flow of this thread’s topic resume.

I think I still have BoF2 for GBA somewhere, assuming it didn’t get lost when I moved. I liked the first one better though.

Yeah. I’d say the part that most sticks out in my mind about BoF is the Stone Robot. That entire sequence just blew me away.

I guess that would have to depend on everyone’s definition of an RPG, whether or not simply playing a character going through levels (like an FPS) or contolling armies (RTS), there is a gray area.
But I would have to say that my first RPG would have been Doom in 1994 followed closely by Super Mario in Early 1995

Hm, my first RPG? Hard to say… Since during my childhood, what I did was only watching my sisters and brothers playing NES and PC…(and know what? I got scared and hide behind my mom. HUHUHU)
Anyway, I first played Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons at VBA emulator (Ive no video games… all of them got broke before I even got to play them) but never finish em up. I got scared and asked my younger brother to finish up the boss (and I even got scared each time that Maple girl came! Woe is me!!!).
So, the actual RPG game which I actually played by myself and finish it by myself would be Tales of Phantasia. Next would be Terranigma (I was convinced on playing it after seeing my sister playing it a decade ago. Woe is me, woe is me…. how can I be such a chicken???)

My first RPG was as many people, FF VII, I get a demo for the pc, I fall in love for the battle system (I jumped from Doom I & II, Quake I, Jedi Knight, Earthworm Jim to this), then they bought me the PS1, then I buy MGS1 and finally I get FFVII and Silent Hill together. A real blessing. From there starts the exploration. Back in the day, I was 9.

I thought that the definition of a role playing game was just that, playing a role. In DooM’s case, you are playing the role of a human fighting his way through the corrupt and the devilish and demon-esque landscapes of different settings from military outposts, to the outskirts of Hell itself.

Please go throw yourself into the nearest fire ASAP. By your definition, PONG is an RPG because you "play the role" of the fucking paddle.

I’m one of the older guys so my first one was final fantasy 1 on the nes ultima 3 on the nes and dragon warrior 1 on the nes.
OH MAN!! i got some good and bad memories of ultima 3 exodus:The game was fucking hard as hell, but generally speaking:they are quite hard.
Dragon warrior was pretty much as straight forward and linear as possible:Grind grind for gold and xp go to next town grind some more.
Then again, thats all you did in ultima 3 too.
Final fantasy 1 on the nes had its difficulties as well, especially the poison area, but i liked it since it was challenging for its time.Later on when you get the bane sword and thors hammer,it becomes too easy in my opinion and ruins the game.

When I was 8 or 9 my stepfathers mother had sent him his old snes and all of his games. I had no idea that it was his, or that his mother had sent it to him. I opened the front door after a man from UPS rang the doorbell and split the scene. I took the box ,being the naive child I was, thinking that god had just stopped by to drop something off for me. Little did I know what treasures lie within this trove of ancient technology. There were many games probably fifteen titles to be to tell the truth. hidden in these games were 7th Saga, Breath of Fire and the best of all Chrono Trigger. When a small child opens his front door to find that god just dropped off a box full of snes games and the system itself this child hears his small 9 year old subconscious inside of his head saying ,"If you don’t do this they might all lose their lives to some kind of apocalyptic colossus from another realm. Then you would regret that for the rest of your existence thinking what if. .. what if. What if I would have just put the cartridge in the console. What if I just pushed the power button. What if I just picked up the contoller. " Little did I know how right I was. The video game soon to change my life was then mysteriously in my hand and then in the console. Chrono Trigger which honestly should of been titled a cure for the existential blues is truely my favorite video game in all of time. and still to this day Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire are still two of the most upstanding games in my life and it shall remain that way till my number is up. That is all.

It was one of those discount, self-published Table Top games a friend bought in the early 90s. I don’t know if it was the confusing rules or we were just a bunch of idiot kids messing around, but it was so bad. I don’t even remember the name of the system but we were all Power Ranger clones who hijacked a space ship to become intergalactic pirates – the kind Hollywood labels good guys not the ‘we get drunk and kill people’ kind.
We managed to pull off a bank robbery on the moon to get the funds to fight the villain (a Lord Zedd clone right down to the z-shaped crown and battle-staff) only to fail a piloting check and crash into the sun where we were all vaporized.

I do not really remember when I started to play RPG games, but I’m going to say that my first RPG game was Final Fantasy 10. Unless Pokemon counts as a RPG game then it might be Pokemon instead.

First RPG I ever got to play was FFVIII (from a friend’s house, didn’t have a PS1 way until 5th grade), but the very first RPG I ever finished was Suikoden II (didn’t complete the 108 stars).

Super Mario RPG. It was the game that really got me into the entire genre. I was like ‘WTF’ with the combat when I first played as a kid it as I never understood or played RPG’s, even though I wholeheartedly enjoyed the game at the same time (really loved the music too). The game felt very different and interesting to me and since I played it, the RPG genre makes up over 80% of my time spent on games. If there is one game that I could play and never get sick of, it’s this.

Its been so long that its hard to remember. I’d been gaming for years and years before I even realized there were such things. There were probably some proto RPGs from the 8-bit days, but you used to get so many games because of compilations and free games on magazines, many of which wouldn’t work properly (or at all) that the memory just blurs a lot of that stuff.
The first RPGs that I remember sticking in my memory were things like Zelda: Link to the Past (if that even counts), and Eye of the Beholder 2 (which I remember playing before EotB 1). I know Secret of Mana was the first game I played that felt like the games we recognize as being JRPGs today. I’d pretty sure I played EotB2 first though – because I played that on my Amiga 500, and I think I’d moved onto PCs by the time I bought my SNES (or rather had it bought for me, myself still being a young whippersnapper back then).
So yeah, its all a real blur. At the risk of getting sidetracked, this has been a real trip down memory lane. Sinclair User, Crash magazine, playing Space Harrier and Star Wars down the arcades, City Slicker on the rubber key 48K Spectrum… ah, the memories. Thinking back to those days makes me feel absolutely ancient, but they were great days all the same.

Amusingly enough, the first RPG I played was actually Final Fantasy VIII on PC – then I proceeded to get a PlayStation and played pretty much anything Squaresoft released on PlayStation back then.

My first RPG/Game was Pokemon Yellow. I have been meaning to try the Legendary RPGs from the Snes era as well as Persona 3 & 4, but I just don’t possess the means to obtain them right now. I will say that my Current favorite is probably Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story with Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia & Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs tying at number 2 for various reasons.

Pokemon Red and FFVIII. I kind of started playing them at the same time, but I was so young back then I had no idea I could save my progress in FF8 (so I’d literally start all over again from the beginning when my brother wasn’t around the PS).
Oh yeah, I didn’t know how to junction either, so I’d literally just be spamming the attack command every time I got into a fight.
Yeah…

Pokemon Red. Then Pokemon Silver. Then Golden Sun for the GBA, which I consider my true introduction to RPG’s, whereas Pokemon was just the cool thing to like at the time. Lol.

Perhaps it was the first Eye of the Beholder?

I grow up playing on the PC so it wasn’t until i bought a DS like back in 2006 or something and played Final Fantasy 3 on it. I had seen JRPG’s like Final Fantasy and Monster Rancher and such but i didn’t really play them and it’s not like i could have sat there playing on their console for long enough to able to beat them.
Anyways. It’s hard to say what my first RPG was. At this point it’s hard to say which game first but i’m leaning on one of the later Might And Magic games being the one (6-8)

If I remember correctly and if it counts, Zelda for Nintendo was my first. If that doesn’t count it was Phantasy Star II. After that Pokemon Red. Then Diablo (which might have been before Pokemon, I can’t remember). Then first PS1 RPG was the Legend of Dragoon demo, then I was forever hooked on them. First RPG I completed was Final Fantasy 8, then 7, so on and so forth. Big fan of SquareSoft now SquareEnix I believe.

My first RPG was FFVII on the PS1. I think i started playing PS1 when I was 13, and played games like Pandemonium, Abe’s Odyssey, and a racing game where you flew spaceships rather than buggies and such. Can’t remember what it’s called now. I was at the video store and saw this really cool cover for a game and picked it up and it was FFVII. I think it was the first game that i was ever hooked on.

My first game was either:Ff1 on nes or ultima 3 exodus.I don’t really remember though since it was a long long time ago.I just remember getting stuck in ultima 3 exodus, because I couldn’t beat any of the caves.Since I could already read for years(At least 4 years old) I could understand what was going on.Problem is:I leveled up and ended up dying because the monsters got stronger and murdered me.The caves+ music also was nerve wracking, especially since the lights kept going out and I kept running into traps and dying.
Ff1 I remember playing very very young, and I remember in my very early teens playing nes at my beach house.I left it there so I could play it, so I ended up playing final fantasy, since I loved the game, and played ultima 3 exodus and also magic of Scheherazade, willow and faxandu.
Ff1 introduced me the idea of the fear of exploration and difficulty, as it had its difficulty curve.

Final Fantasy X/KOTOR, first thing I owned on a PS2/Xbox. Both games defined my taste for gaming. I don’t touch many online games. I look at games for a "visual novel" like effect. Playing and watching a novel unfold.

Have you beaten baldurs gate? If so any tips on how to advance in this game? So far I think I made more than a few mistakes, such as I recruited xzar and the enchanter guy from the poisoned ore quest.I also have a thief that comes with him.
If I don’t do a quest a person joined me for, will they leave? Any tips on buying weapons? My version should include expansions nvm it just says forgotten realms.I also have baldurs gate with throne of Baal and shadows of amn expansion.

The original Fallout. I loved the complexity and the dark humor behind it, even if the latest games have dropped some of that complexity.

My first RPG was Megaman Battle Network 3: White. Kind of a weird introduction into the genre of RPGs because of the way battles are executed. I love the series though. Megaman BN 6 was awesome. The best in the series in my opinion. In fact I think I’ll go play it right now.
