Anyhow, after a bit of help form Smokey and Agent0042 ๐ , i have come up with a general gaming rumble.
It is different becuase although Final Fantasy may be involved in the RPG section, therewill be a lot of other games involved too. The rumble will involve a sort of do-as-i-go-along method so any feedback or questions just PM me, i wont have anything apart from the current round planned.
I am going to start with the Shooters or Shooting related games , and here is the list of them:
1. Timesplitters 2 (PS2)
2. Goldeneye (N64)
3. Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
4. Halo (Xbox)
5. Doom 3 (PS2)
6. Perfect Dark
7. Descent (PS1)
8. Starwing (SNES)
9. Half Life (Xbox)
10. Deus Ex II (PS2)
11. Air Combat (PS1)
12. Red Dead Revolver (PS2)
13. Judge Dredd (SNES)
14. Full Spectrum Warrior (Xbox)
15. Conflict: Desert Storm (PS2)
16. Rainbox Six: Lone Wolf (PS1)
Please note that i am not a hardcore shooter games player so if i have made any mistakes then please PM me and let me know. Also due to where i live differing to where you lot live, there might be some games on the list that you haven’t played, if this is the case, then vote for the one who you have heard the most positive feedback about – or PM me and i may change it accordingly.
[BELOW]
NOTE: Let’s start this out the right way. People, bold your votes!
If I had any say in the matter, this topic would be closed.
Well… you don’t…
I do however, and I see no point in this thread. If you want to do something like this, you could make a "What is the best FPS" thread, but that would be rather pointless also, considering it has been done multiple times.
If any other mods have something against me doing this, say so. Otherwise, Closed.
… and I think I’ve played all of like two games on that list. so Doom 3 ’cause oldsk00l np 8-).

Games that came out 11 days ago are so oldsk00l.
Because of the lack of PC games, which is the only format that shooters are good in, I choose not to vote.
and it’s Deus Ex II on the PS2; Deus Ex was a PC game.
Anyways, becuase of the dodginess at the start, i’ll restart it.
Metal Gear Solid (PSone)
vs.
Half Life (XBox)
Remember to bold the vote!
Oh, and if you haven’t played the game, vote for the one you’ve heard the most about.
Absolutely laughable having Army Men in a Best Shooters thread. Glad you changed it.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I told everyone on my first post that i wasn’t a hardcore shooter player. Doesn’t mean to say that i have no gaming knwoledge at all, otherwise i wouldnt’ve done it in the first place.
And Maguc, if you agree, then i’d presuem you were kissing up to Loki cos he’s a mod.
After Shooters, ill do RPG and drivers which i have the knwledge on. And Loki feel free to help me along the way. The the thread would be the way you like it, as well as everyone else.
OK, this thread has had a really sucky start. I may do shooters later on. I’m gonna have to start again, after all:

This thread fucking sucks.
So, basically i am going to do a list of 8 Driving games, all on different formats.
These are them:
1. Driver (PSone)
2. Moto GP 2
3. GTA: Vice City (PS2)
4. Colin McRae Rally 4.0 (PS2)
5. Gran Turismo 2 (PSone)
6. Project Gotham Racing
7. Crazy Taxi (PS2)
8. Need For Speed Underground (PS2)
Right, i am pretty sure that there isnt any trouble with these, however, please PM me if you wan any more or any swapped.
Just to make things totally clear:
I will start with 8 driving games, and whne i have a winner, do a different catergory of games, for example RPG’s, and then get a winner from that section and so on.
When i come to shooters, to make everyone happy, and Loki (hopefully) i may ask everyone to include in their post what competitors they wish to have in it. When i have winners for all catergories, i will battle those out to get the winner. And then what t odo with it, well take it from there.
PLEASE CAN WE GET STARTED ON THIS PROPERLY NOW!?
Catergory 1 – Drivres/Racing Games
Battle 1
Driver (PSone)
vs.
Crazy Taxi (PS2)
One thing you might consider trying is instead of coming up with the list on your own, start off by asking what is everybody’s favorite game of a genre and make a list using those.
Some things you are definately missing are Project Gotham Racing 2, F-Zero GX, Burnout 3, Grand Turismo 3, MotoGP 2.
Some things that do not belong on the list: GTA 2, The Getaway
You will ask nicely, and he will consider.
Please consider in your very busy lifestyle to help me in my rumble.
whoo~hoo post 300!!
Crazy Taxi!
The problem with doing a General Gaming Rumble is, that there are so many to chose from. Plus, because everyone lives in different places, i do not know which ones people have played. So, i might use your idea, yes.
To start with, i will need 8 ideas for Shooter/Shooting Related Games . Include one idea in your post ASAP, and we’ll chose the best of the best and get started ASAP.
Best online FPS ever.
Example: Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Black Hawk Down, Halo. There’s five straight away and I’m just brushing the surface.
I don’t know if you like to include sequels like: UT2 Q3TeamArena etc.
What about: Kingpin and Soldier of Fortune?
And maybe some classics?
Doom, Duke Nukem3D, or even go way back to Wolfenstein??
These are all the shooting games i enyojed playing.
Red Faction was kinda cool. And Deus Ex…
You’re going to need more than 8 FPSs. Quite simply, there are too many of them available for it to be limited to just 8. 32 would be a much better number, and even then it’s still too damn limited.
Example: Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Black Hawk Down, Halo. There’s five straight away and I’m just brushing the surface.
32 then.
I will leave it a couple of days, and then we shall decide on 32 to use and we shall start.
Also the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series.
Red Faction was kinda cool. And Deus Ex…
oh yes DEus EX too!!!
i forgot about this game, because i don’t think of it as: "only shooting"
DUCK HUNT!!!
Daikatana
Duck Hunt
Red Faction
Deus Ex
Half Life
Unreal Tournament
Doom
Duke Nukem 3D
Wolfenstein
Tribes
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Kingpin
Soldier of Fortune
Which totals 14, keep them coming and let me know of any objections on this list.
Thanks.
okay, for me, some shooters
Truok 2
south park
Blood 2
Requiem
Alien versus predator
Shogun: mobile armor division
Thief
Delta force
splinter cell
messiah
MDK 2
soldier of fortune
Heavy metal: FAKK 2
KISS psycho circus: nightmare child
America’s army
No one lives forever
some questionable shooters:
Army men: sarge heroes?
Star trek insurrection?
Star trek voyager-elite force?
Die hard Trilogy?
Nocturne
MAx payne?
Full spectrum warrior?
Keep in mind i do not know much about this games. Those questionable shooters are like what the category says, questionable. But I thought that you might need some help thinking of the names up. I’ll like to help to keep this thread going, cause it has a lot of promise.
A toast to this thread and long may it live!:-D
NOT Army men!!!
America’s Army and Max Payne are good games by the way…
But those on the list are definitely FPS, that much i know, so there would be 32. now the only problem would be wether ppl knows those games only.
Call of Duty
Max Payne 2
These should definately be on the list, along with a lot of the above mentioned.
Beachhead (!!)
Daikatana
Duck Hunt
Red Faction
Deus Ex
Half Life
Unreal Tournament
Doom
Duke Nukem 3D
Wolfenstein
Tribes
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Kingpin
Soldier of Fortune
Alien vs. Predator 2
Battlefield 1942
Call of Duty
Max Payne 2
Turok 2
Metal Gear Solid
America’s Army
Delta Force
Full Spectrum Warrior
MDK 2
Splinter Cell
Medal of Honour 2
Time Crisis
Which totals 27, keep them coming and let me know of any objections on this list.
Thanks.
Up to now, i have:
Daikatana
Duck Hunt
Red Faction
Deus Ex
Half Life
Unreal Tournament
Doom
Duke Nukem 3D
Wolfenstein
Tribes
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Kingpin
Soldier of Fortune
Alien vs. Predator 2
Battlefield 1942
Call of Duty
Max Payne 2
Turok 2
Metal Gear Solid
America’s Army
Delta Force
Full Spectrum Warrior
MDK 2
Splinter Cell
Medal of Honour 2
Time Crisis
Personally, I would shorten the list to like 16 instead of 32…
Halo
Deus Ex
Half-life
Return to Castle Wolfenstien
Tribes
Goldeneye
Soldier of Fortune
AVP 2
Battlefield 1942
Call of Duty
Max Payne
Metal Gear Solid
Splinter Cell
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Time Crisis
Doom 3
However I sort of disagree with putting things like Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid in the same category as Half-life and other FPS’s… they are a totally different genre.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is different to Wolfenstein.
Deus Ex
Half-life
Return to Castle Wolfenstien
Tribes
Goldeneye
Soldier of Fortune
AVP 2
Battlefield 1942
Call of Duty
Max Payne
Timesplitters 2
Quake 3
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Time Crisis
Doom 3
Does this float everyones boat?
Does this float everyones boat?
Looks fine to me.
Rules (You prob. already know these)
1. No double-voting or above
2. Try not to engage in too deep conversation.
3. Try to remember to bold the vote.
4. I am picking two that battle at RANDOM, so if they don’t compare, don’t put it i your post, it is RANDOMLY SELECTED.
5. As from NOW, try to remember to PM me if there is any trouble, with the list or anything else, although i do not think that there will be.
6. Each battle should last around 4 days, if it is above, there WILL be a reason for it so please be patient.
Hopfully, we can get started properly now everyones happy. ๐
By the Way…
I have decided that this is the way i am going to select every catergory for the rumble, i will advertise it in my signiture so keep a look out for it! Also, instead of making new posts every time i get an update, i am gong to repeatedly edit this post every time a battle ends. At the end of a round, i wil make a new post containing the remaining competitors though.
Italic means that a competitor is through to the next round.
Bold shows the cpmpetitors still in the round
Normal test shows games that have been knocked out.
Here are the competitors:
Halo
Deus Ex
Half-life
Return to Castle Wolfenstien
Tribes
Goldeneye
Soldier of Fortune
AVP 2
Battlefield 1942
Call of Duty
Max Payne
Timesplitters 2
Quake 3
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Time Crisis
Doom 3
Battle One
Time Crisis
vs.
Goldeneye
The game that really brought First-Person Shooters to consoles.
I think for the shear fun of it (fun, I mean because its so shit) we should have the South Park game in there.
Have i played that some times with my friends after we got back from a pub.
The one game that made the gemre look good. I don’t know abt goldeneye, but it did not leave with me a great impression……. Action affciandos should go for time crisis.
Where’s Daikatana gone? That game should blatantly be in the top 16.
Hey people, sup ? i would have to chose NFSU as the gameplay is fast and smooth and the grahics are amazing.See Ya Lata.

…and if you must make a shallow conversation, at least make it MAKE SENSE.
Time Crisis – 2
Goldeneye – 7
So. Bond’s N64 classic had the upper hand in this walkover.
Battle 2
Timespltters 2
vs.
Deus Ex
Timesplitters 2 without a doubt.
The epitomy of a thinking man’s FPS.
Timesplitters 2 without a doubt.
Looks like some people are disagreeing with you here Smokey.
Deus Ex.
Deus Ex
The epitomy of a thinking man’s FPS.
Indeed.
Didn’t care too much for any of the different endings, but the gameplay meantime was all kinds of awesome–if a bit cumbersome on the controls.
If you think otherwise, you are wrong.
Definitely, ranks among the tops of thinking man action games
Timesplitters 2 – 1
Deus Ex – 8
Yet another walkover, this time at the mercy of Deus Ex.
Battle 3
Doom 3
vs.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
The Doom games overall were good, but Doom 3 makes my PC spec cry, so I haven’t bought it yet.
I am kinda hoping that it will be a closer contest than the previous battles. ๐
Give it some time. There will be close battles, and then there will be blow-outs. It is bound to happen.
With that said, Doom 3.
(Chainsaw!!!)
With that….. Doom 3 gets my vote
but i’ll vote Doom 3
Doom 3 – 6
Return to castle wolfenstein – 2
Battle 4
Half-Life
vs.
Medal of Honor – Allied assault
my vote goes to medal of honor because half life sucks on the PS compared to the Pc. Mutiplayer was horrible.
my vote goes to medal of honor because half life sucks on the PS compared to the Pc. Mutiplayer was horrible.
That’s a super-dumb reason to vote for it.
Halflife is teh win because it does an excellent job of throwing you into an environment that you can interact with, and was pretty much the first FPS with story, and that allowed you to do a bit more than just run and shoot (Doom, Wolfenstein)
I’m starting to like this rumble….. NIce choices but maybe can we leave those tough choices to the back of the rumble. That way the rumble won’t lose steam half way.
Well, it’s tough to do that, since the battles are randomly chosen.
My vote is for Half-Life as well.
I’m starting to like this rumble….. NIce choices but maybe can we leave those tough choices to the back of the rumble. That way the rumble won’t lose steam half way
Plus, the better ones will meet in future rounds.
Very interesting game, One of the few shooters i actually played through the single player story and liked it.
Anyhow, lets get back to it, the voted for that battle went:
Half-Life – 5
MoH:AA – 2
And…
Battle 5
Call of Duty
vs.
Tribes
Can i maybe remind everyone that if you haven’t heard of any of the games, vote for the one which you have heard the best feedback from ๐
Can i maybe remind everyone that if you haven’t heard of any of the games, don’t vote because you’re opinion is wrong.
Italic means that a competitor is through to the next round.
Bold shows the competitors still in the round
Normal un-styled font shows games that have been knocked out.
Here are the competitors:
Halo
Deus Ex
Half-life
Return to Castle Wolfenstien
Tribes
Goldeneye
Soldier of Fortune
AVP 2
Battlefield 1942
Call of Duty
Max Payne
Timesplitters 2
Quake 3
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Time Crisis
Doom 3
My vote goes to Tribes, fantastic multiplayer connection with innovative jetpack duelling. Add to the fact that you have call down abiltities and the fact that you can heal while trying to defend your base makes for some furious combat action.
That’s
Call of Duty – 5
Tribes – 2
Battle 6
Soldier of Fortune
vs.
AVP 2
Now VOTE!
Im a bit biased on this one because it is pretty much what introduced me to online multiplayer FPS. I was never too keen on Counterstrike or Quake, so this was it for me, and I loved it. Most of it is just running and shooting, non-stop action type of thing, but it’s insanely fun.
AVp2 is the one because what other game lets you control an invisible character who can go around and skin ppl? blow heads off? both do that, but you can bite heads off in Avp, nice weights to weapons and you do not need the infrared view on the IOCW when you have the predator view lens…..lolz
Soldier of Fortune – 4
AVP 2 – 3
(In a tie, becuase i will have to PM Agent0042 or Smokey to find out how to deal with them, i am just going to say the one which was better in my opinion, just this once)
I will go for SOLDIER OF FORTUNE
Battle 7
Quake 3
vs.
Battlefield 1942
Never much cared for Quake 3. Quake 2 was better. Also, BF1942 had a much more in depth Multiplayer, and is much more fun that Quake.
Quake 3 – 4
Battlefield 1942 – 2
And the last battle in this round is:
Battle 8
Max Payne
vs.
Halo
Halo was just kind of bland.
Halo gets my vote though. Why? Because I only played through Max Payne a couple of times. I only played through Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne once. Meanwhile, Halo crops up again and again – if you’re short of something to do, Halo is the best multiplayer experience you can have. There hasn’t been a console shooter experience like it since GoldenEye 007 for the N64. The brilliantly designed maps, the intuitive control and the many game options, especially combined with the great sci-fi single player storyline, make it a contender for one of the best games of all time.
Halo wins this only because of the graphics…… Max payne is just slightly behind it in that area and it just loses by that small bit……
Max payne is just slightly behind it in that area and it just loses by that small bit……
Haha bullshit. Have you even seen the physics in Max payne 2? The visuals are so much more amazing than Halo.
Halo is overhyped unstylish bullshit in all modes.
Max Payne – 2
Into the next round.
Here are the competitors:
Half-life
Goldeneye
Call of Duty
Doom 3
Round 2
Battle 9
Goldeneye
vs
Deus Ex
But now my vote goes to Deus Ex
Goldeneye – 5
Deus Ex – 2
Battle 10
Soldier of Fortune
vs.
Doom 3
Technically and atmospherically a better game.
Just Plain Funner.
Because it raped my video card so much I bought a Radeon =D
Doom 3 – 5
Soldier of Fortune – 3
So, Doom gets the upper hand this time.
Battle 11
Halo
vs.
Half-Life
Better, more interactive environments. Better story and characterizations. More intense. Better control.
NOTE: SephirothBizzaro, I couldn’t tell you this, because you can’t receive PM’s. But, if you need me to do that anytime, because of your internet problems, just tell me.
How can I choose between the two greatest First Person Shooters ever created?
Halo, as I stated before, is a masterpiece of incredible design – the gameplay is perfectly balanced, the control is brilliant for the Xbox, and multiplayer is an incredible experience…
But Half-Life, on the other hand, is also an incredible game that still stands out today – nearly 5 years later. Not only was the single-player amazing, but multiplayer mods like Team Fortress Classic kept us enthralled in the early days, and then came that wonderous game called Counter-Strike. Not to mention the hundreds of excellent multiplayer mods available like Day of Defeat and Natural Selection.
If it was just a single-player game contest, then Halo would take my vote – but Half-Life is the gift that just keeps giving.
Although Halo is very good too, Half-life is just GREAT!!
Halo – 1
Half-Life – 5
Battle 12
Call of Duty
vs.
Quake 3
Great atmosphere, great sound effects, and it integrates you into a team. The AI is incredible, and the visuals are also superb.
Q3A was a…eh. It was dissapointing.
Call of Duty is one of my favorite games of all time. It has amazing single and multi play. Call of Duty will always get my vote.
Quake 3 – 0
So Call of Duty thrashes Quakes’ 3rd instalment. So Quake 3 has to say bye.
Were into the semi-finals now.
Semi Final 1
Battle 14
Half-Life
vs
Doom 3
Note: The next catergory is RPG’s I think, so you should start thinking about who you want in. PM me if you want to ask anything.
Also, I nominate Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana for starters.
HL and Total Annihilation made mods cool.
mrmonkeyman are you a modder by the way? YOu seem to know a lot about mods….. Just asking because I saw you post, no offence though
May I also suggest doing something besides RPGs next. They have their own forum for one thing and I personally would perfer an RTS or just General Startegy rumble.
Doom 3 – 1
So the most votes so far goes in Half-Life favour.
Semi-Final 2
Battle 15
Goldeneye
vs.
Call of Duty
My vote goes to Call of Duty because it is a better game then Goldeneye!!! Down with Goldeneye!!
…
…
Goldeneye ๐
And just barely, it still gets my vote.
Call of Duty is one of my favorite games of all time. It has amazing single and multi play. Call of Duty will always get my vote. I just bought the expansion yesterday as well. I kind of have mixed feelings about it so far in the multiplayer but the singleplayer is even better than before.
I just bought the expansion yesterday as well. I kind of have mixed feelings about it so far in the multiplayer but the singleplayer is even better than before. Get to the british campaign.
Trust me.
Anywho, yeah, Goldeneye.
Call of Duty – 2
Goldeneye – 10
Another thrashing, at the hands of Goldeneye.
This sadly brings us to the finale of the Shooting Games part of the rumble.
The Final
Battle 16
Goldeneye
(The reason to go out and buy an N64 as quoted by Smokey, and a fine FPS at that).
vs.
Half-Life (Very original FPS with lots to do and see, not to mention pretty pleasing graphics.)
(The next catergory is RPG’s, so please nominate who you want in within your post. Altenatively you can PM me if you can be assed.)
RPGs: Morrowind, Baldur’s Gate, Wizardry 6 (Which is, I think the best of the series), Xenogears, Final Fantasy 7
Goldeneye.
Also, I would like to see Grandia and Suikoden (I suppose their respective sequels need not be included…? Depends on if you’re doing it by series or by each incarnation. Well. I don’t know)
I would like to take this opportunity to nomintate:
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
And i’d like to take this oppurtunity to nominate Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Final Fantasy X, the two greatest RPGs of all time ๐
Oh, and I think MMORPGs should be a separate category, otherise Final Fantasy XI would rule over all.
Judging by my avatar and sig I would say Half Life.
Ultima Online
Everquest
Asheron’s Call
Asheron’s Call 2
Dark Age of Camelot
Horizons
City of Heroes
Star Wars Galaxies
Final Fantasy XI
A Tale in the Desert
The list goes on. Surely there’s enough to get a decent roster together.
I’d seriously be surprised if DAoC even had a chance against those. And I think some would give FFXI a good run.
You must not have played Ultima Online, Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies, or City of Heroes. Those games have massive followings also.
Not in a mostly FF messageboard. There’s no way anything would have a chance against FFXI here… even though FFXI wasn’t any good.
On The thoughts of Rpgs, I think that we should include in Lineage, Ragnarok…….. Maybe even ‘Progress quest’ for those who have played it…..;-D
search up on progress quest and you would know why. haha:-D
Half-Life – 6
Goldeneye – 5
HALF-LIFE wins the Shooting section.
This means that we are at the end of this section.
Keep posting RPG ideas and i’ll round them up within the next 1-3 days hpopefully so we can get started.
The after that we’ll decide on MMORPG’s.
Also, I nominate Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
(like: Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter nights, Icewind Dale etc)
include Bioware RPG’s?
(like: Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter nights, Icewind Dale etc)
Um… if you had bothered reading the previous posts, BG and NWN have already been nominated – and ID is BG by a different name <.<
I’d suggest that if you did have an RPG rumble, wouldn’t it make sense to have it in the RPG forum just below GG, and have a seperate, more fresh one here?
Oh yeah, and Dark Cloud 2/Chronicle, if it’s eligible for the RPG battle.
But is there really any point in starting a new rumble just to battle 16 RPG’s?
We’d have to do something else with it too.
Morrowind
Baldur’s Gate
Wizardry (6)
Xenogears
Tales of Symphonia
Grandia
Suikoden
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Star Wars: KoToR
Final Fantasy X
Ragnarok
Progress Quest
Skies of Aarcadia Legends
Dark Cloud 2
(I’d like to nominate)
Shenmue
TLoZ: Ocarina of Time
So, if we are going to have 16, we are going to need a few more… And thats excluding the fact that there might be some objections to this list.
If anyone does not agree to any games in this list, please say, and put forward some more RPG’s that you maybe think will do well.
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X
So, if we are going to have 16, we are going to need a few more… And thats excluding the fact that there might be some objections to this list.

I don’t think we need any Final Fantasy games in there, since that is what the other Rumbles are for. Let’s have a Rumble where there is nothing Final Fantasy related for once. ๐
I also want to nominate Skies of Arcadia Legends, and Tales of Symphonia.
FFVII, FFX DELETED.
Also: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is not an RPG, it’s action adventure.
What? FF is a RPG? Why would you eliminate a good RPG from the list just because we do it in other forums. That’s not really very fair.
Also: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is not an RPG, it’s action adventure.
Fine. TLoZ: A Link to the Past.
This whole site is dedicated to FF. I think it would be nice to get away from it here. Unless, more people disagree with this, that is…
Fine. TLoZ: A Link to the Past.
A Link to the Past is an action game as well. I would recomend making the FF series into one comtenstant on it’s own same with all other series.
Planescape: Torment absolutely must be on this list.
EDIT: Maybe instead of doing a MMORPG rumble next it could just be sub RPGs you could include Action RPGs and Startegy RPGs as well.

Agreed.
Also, if we’ll include strategy (TBS?): Vandal Hearts, Disgaea, and Shining Force.
If TLOZ is an entrant, why not Kingdom Hearts? I don’t like it, but it could be filler.
FF would have kind of a huge bias for it, you know, that might ruin the whole thing, I mean, what’s the point in voting if one entry is sure to win? =/

I can almost guarantee that FF would NOT win. We have a pretty diverse group of gamers here surprisingly, and the one that I forsee winning more than anything else would be Chrono Trigger.
Personally, I think the RPG category is defined by improvement – if you get EXP, or your character gets better as the game progresses, it’s an RPG. As much as I dislike Ocarina, it doesn’t really fit anywhere else – getting better weapons and getting more hearts just fits is into the RPG category.
That said, i’d like to see Vagrant Story, Ocarina of Time and Kingdom Hearts included.
Also, I believe that FFVI, VII and X should be included – they’re magnificent RPGs in their own right, and they’re generally recognised as the ‘best’ Final Fantasies.
Kingdom Hearts and Vagrant Story are RPG’s, but I don’t see how you can consider a Zelda game an rpg at all. It’s action adventure… you don’t gain skills, you don’t gain experience, you don’t gain levels… your character never changes, it’s not an RPG.
It pains me to say this, because I don’t personally see what all the fuss about Zelda games is about – they’re ok, and i’m having fun with Link’s Awakening on my GB at the moment, but I’d get bored of them pretty quick.
I find them to be borderline RPG though – the storyline is definately RPG (rescue the princess… again, and again, and again), there is a fully defined fantasy world, you have to buy equipment, etc.
And although your character never really improves on individual stats per se, you do improve over time – you gain more ‘HP’ by finding pieces of heart, and you gain more Strength by gaining a more powerful weapon.
It’s borderline, but I think it’s just over. Personally, I think the entire series is overrated, except for the upcoming GameCube one – that looks decent.
I find them to be borderline RPG though – the storyline is definately RPG (rescue the princess… again, and again, and again)
Super Mario Bros is RPG then.
, there is a fully defined fantasy world, you have to buy equipment, etc.
Grand Theft Auto is RPG
And although your character never really improves on individual stats per se, you do improve over time – you gain more ‘HP’ by finding pieces of heart, and you gain more Strength by gaining a more powerful weapon.
Ratchet and Clank, Prince of Persia, Maximo, and lots of other platformers and action adventure games do this also.
Name any game that you know to be a definate RPG, and it will include some sort of stats for your character… Zelda has none of these stats.
I consider an RPG to be a game where combat is based off of stats that you have to build up by defeating enemies and gaining experience.
It’s not like I would vote for a Zelda game, anyway ๐
One more thing….. HOW CAN YOU GUYS FORGET ABOUT FALLOUT!!!!!!!!!!!! Hell that is one kickass game. NEver forget the game that help in the restoration of Rpgs man!
Though it’ll probably lose, it’s one of my personal favorites.
Valkyrie Profile, Shadow Hearts, and Star Ocean 2 were all also quality stuff.
I know it’s been agreed that there won’t be FF games, but maybe we could include Tactics? That generally gets excluded from the FF rumbles.
Also, I believe that FFVI, VII and X should be included
I agree on VI and VII, but I always thought X got one of the more lukewarm receptions for an FF. You know, 7/10 rather than 9 or 10, at least in really reputable indie games magazines/sites.
Plus it was a bit crap. ๐

Agreed
Plus it was a bit crap. ๐
Well, reviews are just opinions – the reason it got a lukewarm reception was because the storyline was more personal that the others – as well as saving the world, it was about saving one of your own.
The combat system was brilliant, the graphics are still to be surpassed, the story was top notch, and there are tonnes of things to do once the game is over.
I still think FF10 is the best Final Fantasy… and that’s during my current addiction to FF11.
And why would a good plot be a reason to mark it down? That’s silly. Most of the reviewers I am talking about aren’t … you know, the dumb FF7 forum fanatics. Also, graphics aren’t so important in the context of RPGs, imo.
I’ll add these RPG’s, and then include up tp 2 FF’s. so we don’t have too much. I’ll start it within about a day or so.
Hey thanks for the attention dude……..:-D
I do agree with ud??? that Rpg do not really need good graphics to really win the hearts of the players. A point i keep trying to hammer into my friends but would he listen? NOooooo, he stills keep on playing his beloved fps….. never really broadening his horizons. A bit sad, and he considers himself a dedicated gamer……… i mean he does not even want to try ff7 even whne I offered him the chance! BUt i suppose he is entitled to his opinions……. bit sad though.
FFX recieved the most lukewarm response than any other FF game on Playstation… and rightly so… the game was fairly terrible.

As you can see, there are 20 here. It’s very hard to include ones that everyone wants. There isn’t enough for 32, and too many for 16. 20 is a fairly good number. I have included 2 FF’s, because any more wouldn’t be fair. I’m guessing that everyone has heard about/played most/all of these listed games. Apart from TLoZ and FF, there have been no other objections to RPG’s suggested. To my knowledge, not every game here is a full-on RPG, but they all have the element, which is good, and they WERE voted by YOU. Ocarina of Time, is a Real Time Action Adventure, with RPG elements to it, thus it isn’t included. Any objections to this list, any that you havent heard of, and any games you don’t think deserves to be here, include it in a post. However, I think I have incuded at least one of everyones suggestions. I will prbably be online tomorrow, but I can’t bank on it, as today was REALLY busy for me. Hence, I am going to start it now, owing to the stated fact. NB: I may include a mini-review by the game, should I be bored, and it might help, you never know!

Morrowind (A game of impressive scope, depth and focus, set in a vivid, self-referential world. Exploration, character configuration, questing and in-game activities, (alchemy, enchanting, pearl-diving, factional conflicts and rewards, etc, are all very fun to do and very well done.)
vs.
Shenmue (Five gorgeous environments. Within each town, you can talk to every human inhabitant, examine every object, knock on every door, and explore every shop – all while time passes, seasons change, and weather intrudes with an amount of graphical splendor bordering on real life)
+ Terranigma
Excellent game, and one that somebody could play for years.

I still want a better pc to play it…

Anyway, can’t comment on this fight, since I’ve never played Morrowind, and haven’t played enough of Shenmue.
Vote goes to Morrowind
I can’t make everyone happy Hogan. I’m happy to include your game, if other shriners don’t mind getting rid of a listed RPG.
Well, why not just continue to add other games to the list? That way, hopefully, it will make it to 32.
Well, why not just continue to add other games to the list? That way, hopefully, it will make it to 32. I agree with this. There’s plenty more RPGs out there that would help reach this number.

vs.
Diablo 2
Any disagreeets toi this list, make it known – but only if other people agree.
As much as I like Neverwinter Nights, it had more than it’s share of problems. The internet play is a joke, the single-player game is created fairly amateurly and the combat is quite unbalanced.
Diablo 2 has quick, fun gameplay, with a great online multiplayer. However the game gets old fairly quick, and is more item hunting than actual gameplay after a while.
Diablo 2 is a better game while it lasts, and therefore gets the win from me, but I would be more likely to go back and play Neverwinter Nights than Diablo 2.
What I like about NWN over D2 the most is the puzzles that are included, as well as side quests. D2 is pretty much straight forward. You hack and slash your way though the game with no real deviation. Sure there are side areas but they don’t have anything to do with the story or the development of your character beyond finding a better item (again something that milkman touched on).
When it comes to overall enjoyment I think I would take D2 over NWN though, it was basically Evercrack for me. There was always some new aspect of the game that I was exploring. Originally it was just playing the game and making a character that was capable of a solo hell rush. Then it became developing the perfect MFing character, and then working on alternate builds like a melee sorc (which I must say kicked ass) and elemental druids. When I finally stopped playing I had been involved in Low Level Dueling, which was a really fun aspect of the game that so few people knew about.
So, to cut to the chase, I pick D2 as well.
Neverwinter Nights was somewhat flawed, but it was superior overall.
Diablo’s click-and-slash gameplay never really appealed to me.
ive played timesplitters2 which rocks. i cant wait for the third one to come out. ive played a few others aswell
EDIT by Raidenex – Please read the topic before posting – we are done with the First Person Shooter rumble, and this isn’t a thread just asking for your opinion. If you read through the thread, you would realize we vote through the games two at a time in a democratic way. At the moment, we’ve moved onto RPGs, and the vote is between NeverWinter Nights and Diablo 2.
uhh…..Rabid Monkey, a melee soc you say? That’s new….. most of the time the soc plays on the ability to blast the shit out of players at long range…. what was the soc using? a giant ax? mine was using one at one stage, and the only reason i did it that way was because I had the tendency to run out of mana at hell….. not funny when you are surrounded by oblivion knights…
Neverwinter Nights – 4
Diablo 2 – 6
So, it started of a walkover, but then the votes for NWN came in, which made this round fairly close.
Battle 19
Earthbound
vs.
Kingdom Hearts
I was using a 7/8 Gaze, SS, Bstar (because sorc elemental masteries added damage to elemental damaging weapons in 1.09), Waterwalks, a 25% Mara’s (I think), 2 5% BK rings, 8% string, Naj’s Light Plate, and a crafted set of blood gloves that gave me something like 20 stats and 5% ll. I also had a lot of charms in my inventory that I honestly couldn’t tell you. If I remember right they were a lot of sharps and stuff, but I don’t remember for sure.
Basically I used a HF merc. I would hack away as I cast firewall. I didn’t use ES because I had really low mana. I just maxed all my masteries and FW, then put the extra points in Shiver armor. I needed something like 297 dex for max block with Storm (that was total). Most of my damage came from elemental damage so I only used as much str as I needed to use my equipment and put the rest into vit. It worked really well.
The story had me enthralled from the beginning, and the inclusino of FF characters in a Disney universe highly appealed to me, and it was a terrific way of introducing my fiance to gaming.
Earthbound I could never really get into – I disliked the graphics, and first person turn based battle systems always bugged me (which is why I can’t stand most RPG Maker stuff).

Earthbound-7
Kingdom Hearts-5
Battle 20
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – The king of the star wars games, and arguably the best RPG released on the xbox. It’s long, it’s dramatic, and it’s set 2000 years before anything involving the Skywalkers.
vs.
Baldur’s Gate – Beard time, kiddies. it’s your typical "i have a lineage that means I’m a child of pure evil" type stuff, pulled off with style and panache that hadn’t been seen in a PC RPG for a long time.
NOTE: Special thanks to mrmonkeyman for the great bios of both games. I vote for KOTOR. IMO, it’s by-far the best Star Wars game to date, and is arguably the best Xbox game out on the market as of now.
Unless you happened to name your character Exeter Skywalker….
The force is with KOTOR in this one. The best RPG, nay, the best game created IMO.

I hate Breath of Fire for its crap ending but I loath FF7. It???s like the 2000 presidential election all over again.
I think I’ll vote for Final Fantasy VII because I want to see it get smashed by either a really good game or a really crappy one, not a mediocre one.

All the n00bie worship is not a good reason to put down a good game ๐
Thread 16724 How about those reasons instead?
I’m not going to argue too much, except to say that everything has been done before, the other RPG’s you mentioned that were better than FF7 got their ideas, plotlines, and gameply from other games, movies, and stories as well… but to me it really just boils down to what Raidenex said, you are disliking the game mainly because everybody else likes it and therefore you are looking for reasons to hate it.
Oh of curse. After all, if I dislike a Final Fantasy game on this forum and then state why, not mentioning anything other than the FF game and other video games, I MUST be doing so because "everybody else" likes it.
/sarcasm
Final Fantasy 7 gets my vote because it was the thing that got me hooked onto the Final Fantasy universe. And on hindsight, I should have recommended Quest for glory instead of Breathe of fire. Damn!
I know that there are a lot of people who hate FF7 but hating it just because everybody else likes it is a very lame excuse. (NO slight intended to Rabidmonkey, this is referring to other ppl) Then again, ppl don’t need a very good reason to hate something so I guess they could say it is legit for them……..It is a free world after all.

Super Mario RPG: LoTSS (Great game, well thought out battle system, very addictive, humourous dialogue, excelent graphics and great replay value)
What more can I say, from my point of view this should be a very close battle….

As for my opinion on Vagrants Story:
I played the game when it was first released, didn’t really care for it much from what I remember. I keep hearing people say it’s a great game now and think "Wow… um… did I play a different game?", because to me it seemed extremely generic. Also I get sick of playing male characters with female names… farking Ashley.
I haven’t played either, so I can’t vote.
You people are losers ๐
Havn’t played both games so can’t give a decent vote. Heard say that Vagrant story is good though. I’m not voting on vagrant story I wanted to buy Wizardary 8 but i could not buy the game in time before stocks run out….. real shame.

Ragnarok is a silly MMORPG that tried to compete for a while and got a small following, but really just kinda sucked.
Actually you’re wrong, Ragnarok isn’t a MMORPG but Ragnarok Online is.
Still I’d have to go with Secret of Evermore.
Still I’d have to go with Secret of Evermore.

I guess I’ll go look up this Ragnarok game, I just assumed it was RO.

Dark Cloud 2

Dark Cloud 2 – This sequel to the popular RPG takes place in one town and across time. When a town is devastated by an evil time traveler, Max joins the swordswoman Monica to track him down and rebuild their world. The game features a more advanced combat engine than its predecessor, and time travel means our heroes must rebuild towns in both the present and the future, jumping through time to monitor their handiwork.
Suikoden – The first game in the Suikoden series follows Tir* McDohl as he becomes a fugitive from the corrupt empire ruling the land around him. Densely layered conflicts and betrayals abound, creating a wonderful story that compares to (and often outdoes) many more well-known games.

Secret of Mana – There is one force in the universe that keeps good and evil in perfect balance. It is called the tree of Mana. But a magic sword has tricked a young warrior into upsetting the balance, spreading evil throughout the land. Thus, the warrior must undertake a dangerous journey to find the seeds of the Mara tree which have been hidden for centuries. Only then can perfect harmony be restored. In this incredible adventure, things are not as they seem. Magic swords release evil as well as fight it. Treasure chests hold booby traps. Monsters are friends and friends are enemies. Dragons fly, weapons change. It’s a world turned upside down that you must help the warrior make right. And the only way to succeed is to solve the Secret of Mana.
Planescape: Torment – Torment is a traditional role-playing game with an uncommonly detailed story and first-rate graphics and sound. It’s set in the complex and interesting Advanced Dungeons & Dragons universe of Planescape, which is a patchwork of wildly different dimensions surrounding a sprawling city that connects them together. In Torment, you play as a nameless character who cannot die and cannot remember his past.
‘New Densetsu Title’ my arse.
Milkman, I know that you guys wnat to finish the Rumble as soon as possible, BUt this fast is a bit inconvienent for me and I believe that it is a bit inconvienent for others as well. But you are the master of the Rumble………… I hope that you will take into account the Feelings of others……..
I’ve asked for other peoples opinions on this matter and the only one I have recieved is Smokey’s, who agrees with this speed. If more people besides yourself finds this to be an inconvenience, I’ll slow down, but more than one person has expressed their desire to speed the rumble up so that we can finish the RPG’s, and that is what I am doing.

I would have to go with Final Fantasy X. While I believe that the gameplay, story, character development and greatness factor are equal on both, Final Fantasy X is a more polished game. However, if Vagrant Story had been given ample development time, and PS2 hardware, the story could have been much different =/
So =/ Vargant Story =/.
Haven’t played Vagrant Story yet.

FF6 is the awesome, but KOTOR is the greatest game ever made =/

Final Fantasy 7
VS
Morrowind

I honestly think it’s the better of the two games – though I get this guilty feeling I should vote for Morrowind, because all the newbs are going to vote for FF7 in a landslide.
Next rumble, we should enforce voting on every stage, or disqualification – that way people can’t just come in and vote for the Final Fantasy games when they wander in.
While I don’t necessarily agree with that, mainly because then we’d have an even lower amount of voters than we already do, I think the Final Fantasy’s should not have even been submitted due to the bias for them.
FFVII gets my vote then.
For shame..
Thats always a sure sign that it was a great game….
I have just started playing morrowind and so far it is pretty great so I don’t know which to vote for but seeing as how Morrowind is getting destroyed It is only fair that it gets recognized as a very good game. SO Morrowind.
Morrowind.
im leaning more towards FF7 because i liked it more than morrowind…….but i did also enjoy morrowind
so my vote is for…………………………..morrowind
it seems to be gettin rocked in this vote…..i want it to stand a chance at least….and someone mentioned in a priot post that FF7 is winning du to popularity posts which is true……..
yah so i definately vote for morrowind
I agree – maybe Knights of the Old Republic would still be with us ๐

Also, I’m trying to decide what genre to do for the next General Gaming Rumble. Any suggestions? I’m thinking Adventure or Platformer or something. Whatever a majority of people would like to do is what we’ll do. I’m just glad RPG’s is almost out of the way.
Charlemagne recommended having a trusted pool of voters. I think this is a pretty great idea, but it would eliminate a lot of good new voters that we could get.
I think I have come up with a rather ingenius solution to try for the next round so tell me what you think:
Each persons vote is worth a different amount depending on how many times they have voted before. I made a formula which i think would work well for this.
Example: Smokey has voted the most out of any person here with 37 votes throughout all the rumbles. Since 37 is the highest number of votes from any one person at the moment, I use it as a denominator.
Smokey’s vote would be worth 37(the current number of votes he has made) divided by 37 (the highest number of votes by any one person).
Hogan’s vote would be worth 33 divided by 37.
A person who just came in and voted for the first time would be worth 1 divided by 37.
This makes everybody’s vote counts, but makes regular voters count quite a bit more, it also rewards constant voting. Let me know if this is the way you guys want to do it.
My vote goes to Final Fantasy X.
And on the next subject issue, phew RPG’s is/was a really long catergory, maybe we should stick with 16 max for each catergory, that way it doesn’t appear to "drag" on.
I think action/adventure or driving/related.
secondly, this would mean that the more serious voters get the games they want. Not very fair as this means that games that smokey wants in might not be reflected by wants of all the other voters, voters who have less votes then smokey. not that games that smokey choose are bad, is just that they might not be waht the majority wants……….
I personally think that it is a bit undemocratic. Anyway, vote goes to Final Fantasy X
Even if it is maybe a bit n00bist I am happy whatever we do personally.
Or, like Zikan said, it could encourage them to post more often.

Not really. It would mean that more serious voters have a better chance of getting the games they want. Which I think is good. The more serious voters don’t just vote on things because of hype or bias (for the most part) and so their opinion is usually more justified. Smokey’s vote would only be worth a very small percentage more than another regular voter, so what smokey wants to win could be easily cancelled out by just a couple votes for something else.
I personally think that it is a bit undemocratic.
All democracies in the world have an age limit that you must reach before you are able to vote. This is to ensure that the voters are mature enough to be well informed of the candidates. That is what I am going for here as well, but instead of eliminating the possibility for the "younger" crowd at ffshrine to vote at all, their vote still counts but just a bit less.
Hey, that is a pretty good idea, if you can handle all that maths – coz I couldn’t. My votage would be pretty crap though coz I only started voting when Milkman took over.
The math is no problem for me, I’ve already written up an Excel Spreadsheet that would take care of all of that. As for your vote counting less because you were running it before, I don’t quite think that’s fair, so I gave you a bit of a bonus because although you didn’t vote in those rounds, you were participating, so don’t worry about your vote counting low.
Edit: Also just as a note, I went through the past RPG rumbles and calculated them using this formula. For the most part the outcome was the same, except for a few key battles. These are the battles that the outcome would have been different:
Diablo VS. Neverwinter Nights
Super Mario RPG VS FF7
KOTOR VS FF6
FF7 VS Morrowind
That’s not one of the choices, although Halo is cool
I vote FF VI
I like the idea, Milkman. I say run with it.
Also, I am highly dismayed to see that FFVII would be history and KOTOR might still be going strong if not for the irregular voters. ๐

it was the better game by FAR

Except I’ll vote for Final Fantasy X. Second favourite RPG after KOTOR, y’know.
I think we are deciding within the next round or two.
Strategy (This includes both Real-time and Turn-based)
Adventure (This will include both Point+Click and Action/Adventure games like Legend of Zelda and Prince of Persia)
Platformer (Mario, Ratchet and Clank, Earthworm Jim)

Why don’t you start on top, and after this one is done, you go to the next one, and after that you do the last one…. ๐
Because the last rumble took almost 5 months.
Final Fantasy X – 6
Final Fantasy VI – 6
After putting the votes into my handy-dandy voteworth calculator, the winner by 0.8 points is Final Fantasy X
Next Round
Final Fantasy VII
VS
Tales of Symphonia
Game descriptions are listed earlier in the rumble.
Thus far it looks like we are going to be doing Platformer games next rumble, those who haven’t stated their opinions already should do so now.
Platformers, by the way.
KOTOR is still the true winner ;_;
Also, I’d like to do Adventure next
I can name 16 great platformers off the top of my head I think, I’d rather not group them with adventure.
Does Tomb raider count as a platformer or a action adventure? side note though……. I would like to express my desire for a strategy game rumble though.
Ok, ok, it was just an idea though. We should start with platformer then, if there are not that many… ๐
Anyway, my vote goes to Final Fantasy VII. It is just the best! ๐
Also, Platform is the next one that I want to see.
yeah, TOS is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFUN
…And, I still vote adventure, but we’ll get through them all anyway so it doesn’t really matter imo.
Platform would be nice to see.
Final Fantasy VII – 8
Tales of Symphonia – 6
FINAL ROUND
Final Fantasy VII
VS
Final Fantasy X
These things always anti-climax, don’t they?
None-the-less, I believe that FF10 is the second best RPG of all time, and FF7 is in the top five, so props to the finalists.
Final Fantasy VII.
And yes, I still think that FFX is a lot better than FFVII.

Dun-du-du-dun DUN-DUN dun-du-dun
YAY FF7 is the winner *streamers, cheers, women jumping out of cakes*
Now lets move on. Start nominating your choices for best Platformer. These are games like Super Mario, Metroid, Mega-man, or Contra. Some of the newer games of this genre are Jak and Daxter, Rachet and Clank, and Klonoa. Start naming names guys. The final 16 (or 32 depending on how many nominees I get) will be chosen and the new rumble will begin on January 18.
Super Mario 64 <- My pick to win!
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario World
Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario World 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros.
Donkey Kong Country
Jak and Daxter
Crash Bandicoot
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped
Sonic and Knuckles
Sonic the Hedgehog
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Will probably think of more later.
Rayman 2, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon (that might make me a faeg), and pretty much everything Raidenex says.
Super Metroid
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
I agree, I think allowing one game per series would be for the best unless another game in the series shows a distinct difference in gameplay (as with Super Mario World to Super Mario 64).
So far the list I’m thinking of is:
Super Metroid
Castlevania: Symphony of Night
Rayman 2
Spyro: Year of the Dragon
Super Mario 64
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Jak and Daxter
Crash Bandicoot
Sonic the Hedgehog
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Rachet and Clank
Klonoa
Metroid Prime
Pitfall
Mega-Man
Really only the orginal Spyro was any good but it was great so I would suggest just Spyro. Unless of course year of the dragon is the orginal Spyro and I don’t remember correctly.
ALSO: "TOMBA!"
Never heard of it. If somebody else thinks that it should be listed, second it.
Not sure if you are up to sequels or not, but definately Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.
Just one game per series unless drastic change in gameplay (example Super Metroid to Metroid Prime. Echoes isn’t a big change from Prime, so not listed.
Also, I’d prefer Mega Man 2 over any in the entire series.
Agreed and changed.
Really only the orginal Spyro was any good but it was great so I would suggest just Spyro.
Agreed and changed.
ALSO: "TOMBA!"
If anybody else wants this game on the list, second it, and choose which game should be removed.
The list so far is:
Super Metroid
Castlevania: Symphony of Night
Rayman 2
Spyro
Super Mario 64
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Jak and Daxter
Crash Bandicoot
Sonic the Hedgehog
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Rachet and Clank
Klonoa
Metroid Prime
Pitfall
Mega-Man 2
If you’ve played the game, you’ll know why. There’s something cool about spear tackling a pig and chucking him at stuff. I say remove Klonoa, ’cause not that cool ๐
In any case, I agree with every title on that list, and I can’t really think of any more that will do well in this rumble.
I say remove Klonoa, ’cause not that cool ๐
k done
New List:
Super Metroid
Castlevania: Symphony of Night
Rayman 2
Spyro
Super Mario 64
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Jak and Daxter
Crash Bandicoot
Sonic the Hedgehog
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Rachet and Clank
Tomba!
Metroid Prime
Pitfall
Mega-Man 2
Well, there is 16 on that list up to now. If Tomba is agreed to, then we are going to have to boot the amount up to 32, or maybe reduce some, becuase I can’t think of any numbers which half in to even numbers between 16 and 32.
I want to leave the list at 16 this time. 32 took way too long and got boring really quick. Hopefully this will keep things fast and a bit more exciting.
Any more disagreements need to be brought up soon.
These are the changes to the Rumble that I have made:
Each persons vote is not worth the same. The more you participate in the Rumble, the more your vote is worth. I have a handy-dandy vote-worth calculator that I will be using to figure up the scores (hopefully this will add a bit to the excitement as well because just because something has more votes does not necessarily mean it’s going to win.) This way hype will not be as big of a factor as it has been as well.
The Rumble will be updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10pm my time, which is Central Standard Time in the states.
Before we were attempting to keep the discussions to a minimum and just focus on the battles. I don’t like this, and I would like to promote discussion more. Try to justify your reasoning for voting for the game you voted for. If you disagree with something somebody said about a game, feel free to comment on it. In depth discussions about games are encouraged.
That’s pretty much it. All battles are still random, remember to bold your choices.
Rumble will start on Wednesday the 19th.
Round 1, Battle 1
Metroid Prime: As intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran, your quest is to explore Tallin IV and stop a crew of evil space pirates. This sequel to the SNES gem Super Metroid features a new first-person perspective and updates the action to full 3D. The action revolves around exploration, puzzle solving, and, of course, firepower. Old favorites like the Freeze and Wave beams will be available, along with a new arsenal of sci-fi weaponry.
Castlevania: Symphony of Night: Take control of Alucard as he plumbs the depths of Castlevania to search for the cause behind its sudden reappearance. Along the way Alucard can re-aquire his vampiric powers as well as using weapons, potions and other magical items. But he’ll have to conserve his energy for the long battle against hordes of hideous undead and other minions of darkness.
This game is completely different to what I expected – before I purchased it, I would have thought it belonged in the FPS category. But this game is a platformer through and through, and it’s a game that captures the feel of the 2D Metroids perfectly.
I don’t think I’ll ever forget that moment right after I finished the first castle and thought the game was done, then the reverse castle appeared.
The Winner with 78% of the points is
Metroid Prime

Round 1, Battle 2
Pitfall: A popular video game released by Activision for the Atari 2600 in 1982. The game is considered by many to be the first platform game ever made. In the game, you maneuver your character, known as Pitfall Harry, through a maze-like jungle in an attempt to recover treasures, 32 of them in all. Harry has 20 minutes to collect them.
Donkey Kong Country: Donkey Kong is back with a new sidekick Diddy Kong in a crazy island adventure! Challenged by the crazed tribe of reptilian Kremlings they endeavor to get back their stolen banana horde! Armed with lightning-quick moves chest pounding muscle and awesome aerial acrobatics our duo is ready to face their cunning adversaries. With the help of Donkey Kong’s quirky family and his wild animal mounts they squabble and scamper their way through unending monkey mayhem!
I can’t say I ever played the original Pitfall!, but most Atari games annoy the crap out of me.
Whole-heartedly seconded. Look at Beyblade, the poorest cartoon cash-in ever.
If I’m wrong, correct me, but I think he was referring to the system, not the corperation… Beyblade isn’t quite that old ๐
Haha, you’re right – Atari these days, I don’t mind. They publish NeverWinter Nights in Australia, which I quite enjoy ๐
The Winner with 75% of the points is
Donkey Kong Country
Platformer Rumble
Round 1, Battle 3
Spyro the Dragon: Spyro is a cute purple dragon in a bit of a pickle. Each of Spyro’s dragon friends has fallen victim to the nefarious Gnasty Gnorc, who has turned them into crystals. Accompanied by Sparx the dragonfly, Spyro sets out to free his buddies, while collecting gems and dragon eggs. Sparx also serves as Spyro’s health-o-meter, glowing gold when Spyro is healthy and turning dusky green as he tires. To boost his energy, Spryo can blast docile creatures with fire, turning them into butterflies, which Sparx transforms into much-needed fuel.
Ratchet and Clank: Delivering exhilarating gameplay mechanics, unique character designs, enormous environments, where it is possible to blow up everything that stands in your way, brilliant graphics, an engaging storyline and an arsenal of the coolest weapons and high-tech gadgets ever seen in an action-platform game, Ratchet & Clank provides players with an immersive experience that demonstrates superb technological advancements and highlights the previously untapped power of PlayStation 2.

Round 1, Battle 4
Jak and Daxter: While exploring some ancient ruins on a forbidden island off the coast, Jak’s best friend, Daxter, is knocked into a vat of Dark Eco–a terrifying and deadly substance that could corrupt the world forever–transforming him into a weasel-like rodent. The village sage, Samos Hagai, tells Jak that there’s only one person who holds the secrets to transforming Daxter back. Now the pair must set out on a quest in search of a wise old sage who has the power to restore Daxter to his former self.
Rayman 2: The Great Escape: A 3D epic that blends fast-paced action and magnificent visuals unique to console gaming. Featuring the uncompromising hero who made his magical debut in 1995, Rayman delivers an unprecedented 3D performance guaranteed to set new standards of challenge in the action arena. With terrifying moves and daring talent, Rayman navigates through 45 areas set across 13 magical environments in order to preserve his kingdom from a gand of unscrupulous pirates.
EDIT: As a note, there will be no update posted on Friday. Due to a death in the family I have to go out of town for the weekend. Next update on Monday.
The Winner with 71% of the points is
Jak and Daxter
Platformer Rumble
Round 1, Battle 5
Crash Bandicoot: With 26 levels spanned across three tropical islands, Crash Bandicoot is sure to amuse old gamers as well as new. Crash must rescue his girlfriend, Tawna, from the evil clutches of Dr. Cortex. Along the way, he can gather fruit for extra lives, smash boxes for random prizes, and gather tokens that can be used for bonus rounds. Numerous big bosses block your path, which also includes more than a few risky jumps that require split-second timing.
Super Mario World: Mario and his dinosaur companion, Yoshi, are looking for the dinosaur eggs Bowser has stolen and placed in seven castles. Many secret exits aid Mario in finding his way to Bowser’s castle, completing 74 areas and finding all 96 exits. With multiple layers of 3-D scrolling landscapes, find items including, a feather that gives Mario a cape allowing him to fly. and a flower so he can shoot fireballs. For any Mario fan this game is a must.
However, since we’re going on life-time achievement here, i’d have to go with Super Mario World. As the ambassador of the 2D Mario games, they are 2D platforming in its purest forum. I can’t say that every Crash Bandicoot game reaches lofty heights – like Crash: Twinsanity.
But anyway, I had more platforming fun with Super Mario on the SNES than I did with any other platformer, I mean, the characters were great and the atmospheres were incredible i.e. Fortresses and dungeons.
The Winner with 100% of the points is
Super Mario World
Platformer Rumble
Round 1, Battle 6
Tomba!: Tomba sports fresh, very cheerful graphics, decent sound and music appropriate for a platform game, and smooth controls. There’s a lot of moves to master, but signposts along the way teach you how to use your controller as you progress through the game. Some areas of the game allow you to explore the foreground and the background of the level as separate areas, but don’t let that fool you: Tomba is at heart a 2D game.
Super Metroid: Take on a legion of Space Pirates and a new Metroid force as you forge into the underworld of Planet Zebes! It’s up to you and Samus to recapture the long-surviving Metroid hatchling before evil hands unleash its energy. An army of ominous creatures are poised for battle at every turn of Zebes’ twisted threatening passageways…including the menacing Ridley and the great lizard Kraid. Knock down enemies with a killer somersault and swing on an electric beam through narrow passageways! They’re no match for you and Samus…but wait! It seems the Mother Brain has returned…
but Super Metroid, hell, Metroid in general, is my current obsession. The deep gameplay (even if it is the same in every one) is a brilliant design, and it’s the game that’s so hard it will only give you a hint when you’re ready to give it up. Brilliant.
Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time. I think it’s one of the greatest games ever, and most certainly the best in the series. I’ve beat it hundreds of times, literally, and that probably has something to do with the fact that I can finish the game with 100% in under an hour and 30 minutes.
I want this game to win the whole thing.
I just couldn’t get into Tomba.

Super Mario 64 vs Sonic The Hedgehog: No descriptions on these games is needed imo. If you don???t know what they are then your opinion doesn???t matter anyways.
Also: Sorry I missed friday guys, had personal matters to attend to*
* Late night gaming with friends more important than online poll iirc. ๐
But Super Mario 64 is genre defining, and in my opinion, the best game ever released on the N64. I’m counting down the days to Feb 22. when the DS is released in Australia, and I get my hands on the portable version, with even more areas to explore.
My pick to win the rumble.
One of the greatest platfomers…ever.
Super Mario 64, arguably the best release game for any console.
The Winner with 86% of the points is
Super Mario 64

Round 1, Battle 8
Prince of Persia The Sands of Time: Amidst the scorched sands of ancient Persia, there is a legend spun in an ancient tongue. It speaks of a time borne by blood and ruled by deceit. It is within this war torn land that a young Prince discovers a magic dagger. Drawn to its dark powers, he is led to unleash a deadly evil upon the reaches of his father’s vast kingdom. Aided by the wiles of a seductive princess and the absolute powers of the Sands of Time, the Prince stages a harrowing quest to reclaim the Palace’s cursed chambers, and restore peace to the very fabric of Time itself. He must tread these dangers carefully, however. Because in this world, there is only one rule: master the Sands, or be buried.
Mega Man 2: Widely Regarded as the best Megaman game (despite the worst box art) this game pits our hero against such foes as Airman, Heatman, and Quickman, and of course the infamous Dr. Wiley. Anybody who has ever played the game will always remember the difficult platforming levels, along with the puzzles that force you to use your arsenal of various weaponry.
More like opposite of your statement. Mega Man is overrated, Prince of Persia is an excellent game and is often overlooked.
PoP plz
That’s right. I didn’t say why I’m voting for it this time. Wanna make something of it? I thought not.
It was a hard decision, but in the end, Super Mario World is merely a predecessor to the current generation – the complete lack of story compared to Metroid’s thrilling sci-fi tale and indepth gameplay leaves no competition.
Super Mario World was good in its time – Metroid Prime is good, now.
Metroid Prime.
Jak gets my vote.
I am pretty sure you have taken care of that with your high votage! Thank god!
But, playing DKC now feels outdated – it’s a platformer, even if it is a well-designed one. Super Metroid still feels fresh after 10 years – count them – and has to be one of the greatest games of all time.
Super Mario 64.
Also, I am glad that SM won, it’s such a great game.
Also : I love how the powerful minority can push about the weak majority in this game. ๐
Also, Super Mario 64. Although both games are fantastic, I believe that Sands of Time merely did a genre that is usually done crapfully (Tomb Raider, etc) superbly well. Super Mario 64 was revolutionary, and had a sequel that didn’t sell out (Super Mario Sunshine).
I’m getting my DS and Super Mario 64 DS on Thursday. Woohoo!
On a side note though, I’m not sure how this rumble is going to go – i’m still undecided between Mario and Metroid. Only time will tell (and how i’m feeling in the voting!)
A lot more inovative.
A lot more inovative.
haha wot?
I’ve seen the Matrix, too.
I’d love to see the Prince (or Neo, for that matter) spinning a giant whatever-the-fuck Bowser is around in circles and throwing him into an exploding mine that’s floating in mid-air.
Now that’s entertainment.
(Don’t get me wrong, <3 PoP)

But that’s not cool. ๐
=D
been missing out the action lately because of other academic commitments but i’ll try to post more often. Vote goes to Prince of Persia: sands of time
I hear old games aren’t allowed to be good.
PoP
Like I mentioned earlier, it’s one of the only SNES games which truly stands the test of time in terms of innovation and gameplay – it’s the sort of game that companies would come up with now. Mature gameplay and story, and ingenious game design.
Ratchet and Clank annoy me.
Even now, i’m having doubts as to which is the better game – at the moment, i’m slightly biased – I just bought my DS, and I have two games – Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt and Super Mario 64 DS. The control on First Hunt is brilliant, while the control on Mario 64 DS is slightly annoying. I’ve had more deaths due to the fact I suddenly stopped running at the wrong moment then any real mistake.
However, it isn’t a rumble between these two games, it is between the originals – and out of these, I have to give the points to Super Mario 64. If for no other reason than imagination – Metroid Prime was creative in a sci-fi sense, but Mario 64 went to places you would never have thought of.
Still, I think i’m going to have more trouble deciding between Super Metroid and Mario 64. I guess I’ll have to wait and see if that even happens…
I don’t think I’ve voted for Super Metroid before now and I don’t plan to start. Super Mario 64 for the win please.
Super Mario 64 gets my vote, and always has in this rumble.
(Also, whats the next genre?)
Super Metroid
However, I can see myself stopping after I finish the game – there’s not much to go back to. The playability, while fun, is infuriating at times. Meanwhile, Super Metroid is pure fun all the time. Even after the first play through, you want to go back again, and again. So, my final vote, even though i’ve backed Mario all along, is for Ms. Samus Aran.
This was my first video-game. I loved everything about it; the story, the characters, the enviroments. They were all great, and they still are. I played Super Metroid about two weeks after I beat Super Mario 64. A friend of mine loved his Super Nitendo, and made me play every single game he bought for it. Super Metroid was a good game, but Super Mario 64 will get my vote over it any day.
Super Mario 64 was such a revolutionary game, and is still to this day the greatest game to be released with a system, easily. There hasn’t been a Mario game since then that has come close to the greatness of this game, and I don’t know if there ever will be. Collecting 120 stars, venturing into 15 unique and exciting levels; it was all amazing.
Super Metroid is still my favorite game of all time, even if it is 2-D. The gameplay is perfection, the levels are designed brillantly, the music is so awesome (especially in the latter stages of Norfair, which made a most welcome comeback in Metroid Prime). Just talking about it gives me the urge to play it again and experience the magic once more.
It comes down to two great games. Super Metroid and Super Mario 64.
THE FINAL WINNER OF THE PLATFORMER RUMBLE IS:
Super Mario 64
Thanks to all of those who have voted in this Rumble. I will post again soon with updates regarding our next Rumble.
There’s one thing I want to change however. I thought the new voting system was pretty good except it isolated the new voters a little bit more than I expected and more than I wanted to. Therefore I am reworking the system a bit. Instead of the person who has voted the most from the beginning of this thread setting the standard, it will only be based off of how many times you vote in the current rumble. Voters who participated in the last rumble however will still count for a little bit more.
So, now instead of Smokey’s vote counting more than anybody elses, anybody who voted in the last rumble will count the same at the beginning of the new rumble. And throughout the rumble if you forget to vote on a battle then your vote will now be worth less. Voters who come in in the middle of a rumble will be worth a bit less but not near as much as the last rumble.
Okay, let me know what you guys think of this system and how you think the last rumble went. Let me know what changes you would like. Do you like me using the pictures in the rumble, or would you rather me just use text? Anything at all you would like me to change?
Also, what should be the category for the next rumble?
You are giving informative, detailed discriptions on each game, with great pictures to go with them, as a result, I have no complaint to them.
I personally don’t mind what system we use, the one we used was good and your new idea is fine too, but either way, its going to encourage more votes.
Lastly, I think Action/Adventure for the next rumble, with games like Zelda and the Oddworld series (maybe)? And everyone else?
Would Adventure games encompass Monkey Island, Broken Sword, Flight of the Amazon Queen, (even Zork?) etc. as well? Because if so, I think we should go with 32 games.
I agree completely. Either that or we should seperate action from adventure. I’ll let you guys decide.
EDIT: I plan on starting the next Rumble sometime next week, so get your opinions and suggestions in quick.
Monkey Island

I also second

Broken Sword
Zork
Sam ‘n’ Max Hit the Road

Still need more so start nominating your favorites.
If so, Broken Sword: Smoking Mirror.
Any of the Oddworld series included in this also, or is that more platform?
Anyway, yeah, Myst and what you have seconded, although I haven’t heard of Zork, I don’t think ๐
I’d rather not.

I’d consider Oddworld a platformer.

Zork is one of the first text-based adventure games.
If I don’t have 16 Adventure Games nominated by then, I will fill them in with games of my choice. Be sure to nominate your games soon.
I think it would be best to separate Adventure from Action and just have 16. We will start off with adventure games. I’m classifying something as an adventure game if it is a game that is about exploration and puzzle solving with very little or no fighting.
DAY OF THE TENTACLE!
Secret of Monkey Island
Broken Sword
Zork
Sam n’ Max Hit the Road
Myst
Grim Fandango
Syberia
Shadowgate
Leisure Suit Larry
The Longest Journey
Gabriel Knight

King’s Quest
Maniac Mansion
Day of the Tentacle
If you think something is missing, say what you would want to see on the list and then say what you want to be removed to make room for it. The list will become final when I post the first round.
Leisure Suit Larry VS Shadowgate
Last Battle
The Winner with 100% of the points is
Leisure Suit Larry
Apparently we don???t like Shadowgate too much.
Platformer Rumble
Round 1, Battle 2
Grim Fandango – Join Manny, the undead travel agent, and uncover a conspiracy to keep new additions to the underworld from buying a safe passage through purgatory. Grim Fandango combines a unique story line and complicated puzzles to create an adventure different from any you have experienced before. Follow Manny through four years of mystery on his quest for true love and eternal salvation.
King???s Quest – This is the story of Sir Graham and his quest for three magical treasures that must be returned to the Kingdom of Daventry. Graham braves ogres, trolls, dragons and giants to win the treasures, restore them to Good King Edward, and claim his reward!
King’s Quest deserves an honourable mention, if only because it inspired Peasant’s Quest. BURNINATE!
The Winner with 86% of the points is
Grim Fandango
Adventure Rumble
Round 1, Battle 3
Zork – The Zork Trilogy is set in the ruins of an ancient empire lying far underground. You, a dauntless treasure-hunter, are venturing into this dangerous land in search of wealth and adventure. Many strange tales have been told of the fabulous treasure, exotic creatures, and diabolical puzzles in the Great Underground Empire
Space Quest – "Roger Wilco’s out to clean up the universe, but he doesn’t do windows. He’s the chief sanitation engineer (aka Janitor) on the starship Arcada. His mission: to scrub dirty decks, replace burned-out light bulbs, and ….. to boldly go where no man has swept the floor! But while he was napping in the broom closet, his starship was hijacked by Sarien Stormtroopers. Now the top-secret Star Generator’s been stolen. And if Roger doesn’t get it back, the universe as we know it is TOAST.
On a side note, I have a 3 1/4 floppy version of Space Quest II in that very box that Loki’s pictured.
(Can I still vote?)
Looks like Milkman’s internet didnt come back in 1 to 2 weeks then.
If a continuation occurs, we’ll have to start a new thread though.
