I usually alternate Eiko and Garnet, or I’ll use them both if I really need to.
And my final spot is open to Amarant, Steiner, and Freya for their raw power.

Hey, You Took My Characters * Evil Look *

Steiner – He serves best as a tank with high defense, HP, and the cover ability. Also, he deals an incredible amount of damage and his Charge! ability is good when things get hairy.

Zidane – Steal is awesome when you learn Mug and Steel Gil. He deals hellish damage, has the best Trance in the game, and you can’t get rid of him. ^_^

Garnet – She looks cooler than Eiko in battle, not that it really matters – just helps me enjoy the game a little better (^_^), she has some pretty damn awesome summons (her Eidolon Trance kicks ass, as well), and she proves a superb healer for the party because of her hellish amount of MP.

Vivi – Without Vivi, Steiner wouldn’t have those awesome magical attacks. Vivi also has great Black Magical spells.

If I, for some reason, couldn’t have either Steiner or Vivi in my party, I’d usually have to get rid of both of the characters and throw in Freya and Quina.

I don’t think Amarant is very useful.

If I can’t have Garnet, obviously I’ll go for Eiko. But yeah, my favored party consists of Steiner, Garnet, Zidane, and Vivi.

How did you become so powerful spermking? I was level 99 and I can’t remember those attacks doing that kind of damage, expect for thievery

For Zydane, I stole every item i could ever since I got the slikk Theivery, so it did 9999 before i got to terra.
For garnet, i got 99 ametheyists, and boost,so her atomos summon is always 9999.
For Eiko, I equipped a bunch of items that "raise the ‘holy elem attack’, so that do 9999 most times
For amarant, hes my favorite, hes at a higher lvl than zydane.

Vivi: Cool and Magically Able

Eiko: My fav character and Phoenix has saved my life more times than I can count!

Amarant: Totally strong bad-ass. What’s not to like?

Only a handful of people have choson Quina as an activeplayer in their squads. Why? My squad consists of Zidane, Garnet, Amarant, and of course, Quina. It’s attacks and magic just Rock!

No, Quina’s a mainstay for me. I don’t get why more people don’t use him/her.

Exactly my point, Quina is one of the most underrated characters in the whole game, but Quina is just soooooo useful.

Alright I just started a new game after I stole back my FF9. My present party is Vivi, Steiner, Garnet and Zidane. I am in the beginning. I just destroyed the Black Waltz and his pet and I am about to head towards Dali. This is like 2 and a half hours into the game. Wish me luck! I am stealing a lot more from the bosses now that I play it again.

Zidane: Have to, besides he’s strong, and his trance abilities are awesome.
Vivi: Black magic, and he’s so freaking cute (even though he’s a guy…).
Garnet: Healing and eidolons. Oh yeah and she’s hot. (sometimes I use Amarant in stead)
Steiner: Strong, cool, and he does great combinations with Vivi.

No way to beat that, Vivi has his Reflect x2 and Flare combo, Dagger can summon Ark and Bahamut, Steiner uses Shock…
Zidane is really the only one I wish I could replace, he’s only good for Grand Lethal in my mind…

Zidane; of course, Thievery is lethal, Soul Blade and Steal are useful, and his speed is awesome (‘specially when paired with Auto-Haste).
Quina; Blue Magic would have to be my favourite type of magic. Ever. Useful spells, power with Frog Drop, interesting character…
Amarant; Throw, No Mercy and Chakra make this guy one of the most powerful party members, he’s also pretty well rounded.

And either;

Freya; Dragon’s Crest, Rei’s Wind (until you get Auto-Regen), Jump, above average attack.
Eiko; The definitive White Mage, what with Holy and her Dbl White Trance, plus she has the two very best summons in the game (IMO), Madeen and Phoenix.

Zidane- strongest character in the game.

Vivi- equip whatever gives you reflect x2 and use flare on yourself causing 9999 to the opponent every time.

Steiner- works well with Vivi, flare sword or whatever takes off around 7000 I believe.

Garnet- Better than Eiko imo, either one does.

Basically, you need Zidane (obviously) Vivi (9999 every time) because you have Vivi you might as well have Steiner for the Magic Sword. And for the summoner Garnet or eiko is better so this is really the best combo and I’d like to see an argument that says its worse than any other combo.

^^This is just the best setup.^^

Fraya- Fraya is better than Steiner minus the fact that Steiner and Vivi mixed gets the [insert magic] sword attack.
Eiko -good. I liked Garnet a little better…
Amarant -cool. Not very great…

I like to play with Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, and Freya.

I use Zidane, Quina, Freya, and Eiko. If you think about it, almost all the characters use the same equipment/skills. Vivi and Quina both use offensive and status magic. Dagger and Eiko both summon and use white magic. Zidane and Amarant equip the same gear and have mostly the same support abilities. Freya and Steiner are both knights. If I could switch Zidane, I would place Amarant in his place, but meh.

Zidane — well, last I checked, you usually have to have him. He can steal stuff and Thievery can deal a guaranteed 9999 once you’ve powered it up.

Quina — Frog Drop, Lv. 5 Death, etc. etc. — I love using Quina in battle!

Freya — Dragon Crest does 9999, some of her Dragon Knight skills are pretty useful too.

Eiko — if I need a white mage — I far prefer her to Garnet.

Otherwise, Steiner is really useful Shock and Climhazzard. And Amarant really is pretty good, some of his Flair abilities, especially when he Trances and it becomes Elan.

Would you not have to use a lot of potions

Not really I only use auto potion for bosses just to be safe…or I put it on a couple of the chars so it stalls more time and I get more hp through auto regen…I just made it to necron and he killed me the first time…but it was because when he did that grand cross move they all went into berserk or died then he just killed em slowly lol…so I got a game over…but thats after like 2 discs without seeing one game over or using garnet and that wouldnt have been prevented even if i had a healer with me… But ya…auto regen alone seems to work fine for me…and pots aren’t very expensive even if you do need them…

Eiko — Best white mage, great summons
Zidane — mandatory, and useful for stealing things

Freya gets some playing time, too, but usually only after I boost Dragon’s Crest.

Gotta have AMARANT: He’s a Powerhouse! I’ll admit the whole throw thing in gay but the fact that he uses claws is amazing!
VIVI: He is just plain awesome. 3 foot nothing yet a force to be reckoned with.
QUINA: If you go around EATing things shes WAY better than EIKO, GARNET, OR even FREYA. She gets massively good healing magic and some INSANE attack magic. She OWNS!
ZIDANE:……..I HATE ZIDANE! But, Square INSISTS that he be necessary in the party…., (zidane blows)

STEINER: The extra power on your side really helps. Also, with VIVI he can use that MAG. SWORD ability. He’s cool.

I’m trying to work some sort of alternate party out. I had thought of using Zidane, Steiner, Freya, and Amarant. Of course, they all have Auto-Haste and Auto-Regen, so a healer isn’t so necessary. If nothing else, Equipping Accuracy + and Healer on Amarant is a very useful healing tool. He can still kick all kinds of butt with No Mercy with this setup. I really like Freya..she just seems to get lost in the mix, with the other tankish guys. Hmmm…Maybe I’ll go with that group…

Cut Freaya and add Quina. But make sure you EAT cause she gets amazingly good skills! Just a thought…

That party is insanely easy to put together, too. I’m not trying to rip on that group or those who use it (because everybody does!). Just making an observation.

Zidane – Yep, this boy is both fast and strong. Quad-9 thievery? HELL. YES. My only gripe with him is that he has no good healing abilities for himself, and Sacrifice isn’t exactly my favorite option… ^^;

Dagger – My shallow reason is because I don’t like splitting her and Zidane up. 😛 But her summons utterly rock my world. Plus, with a higher ability stone count than Eiko, I can cram more abilities onto her. Eiko’s upside is her Guardian Mog ability, but with a fully-trained Dagger, I usually can get Boost, Auto-Regen, Half MP, and a few other abilities on.

Freya – Dragon Crest, anyone? Heck yes. She and Zidane basically end up being exactly the same in terms of speed, strength, and HP. Early on, her Rei’s Wind is a godsend.

The last slot is usually up for grabs and depends on what I’m fighting. Lately I’ve been going with Amarant and Vivi a lot.

Quite good. Throwing stuff is also fun. He can also equip the "healer" ability, making him one monster healer.

He reminds me shadow from vi a bit. Meybe is becouse of the throwing ability

Best damage-dealing, huh? Okay.

1. Zidane. Get his thievery up to 9999. Steal. Steal a lot.
2. Freya. Get her Dragon’s Crest up to 9999. Kill a bunch of Grand Dragons.
3. Dagger. Get any of her summons to 9999. Specifically Bahamut or Ark. But any of them. Get 99 of the corresponding gemstone (99 garnets for Bahamut).
4. Steiner. Use Shock or Climhazzard for 9999. It’ll depend on his level.

Quina-Gets his Frog Drop uo to 9999.
Steiner-Equip Exculipur and it hits up to 9999 😉

Every character can do 9.999 easily at the end. :p

Each character is useful for different reasons. I beat Necronomicon with at least 3 different combinations of characters.

I still can remember first time i end the game my character are only around 40+! I dont even have flare and my zidane wid his orichalon only can deal 1000 damage /cut to necron!At 1st i thought im going to lose but somehow i manage to win!lol!Its damn though to win wid those cheap items thou.
