Of course there is an off switch, or, rather, it probably works the same way as the Reset switch did on the old PS2. Hold it in for a second or two and it shuts the system off.

Plus, is there any truth to the story I’ve heard that the PStwo’s laser unit burns out after only three months due to components drawing too much current and overheating? Or is that just an urban myth?

As for the lack of compatibility with the HDD, as the PS2 HDD is unavailable in PAL territories anyway means it is not that much of an issue really, unless you were hoping that a PAL release of the PS2 version of FFXI is coming. Now, with the slimline PStwo no longer supporting the HDD, makes such a release of FFXI seem even more slim. But that’s another story.

Need I remind you that that ‘huge piece of shit’ is home to some of the greatest games of this generation? No matter what your tastes, you are sure to find something on the PlayStation 2 to please you. There is a reason that it is the most succesful console, you know.

I’d also like to remind you that the games are what matters, not which console they are on. Personally I like the PlayStation 2 for its monolithic design and its Square RPGs – I find it more aesthetically pleasing than the Xbox or the GameCube. Just the same, I appreciate the Xbox for its raw processing power (although PCs have been showing it up recently – just compare Half-Life 2 to Halo 2) and Xbox Live, while I appreciate the GameCube’s uniqueness and awesome controller.

I also heard that it wasn’t compatible with the HDD. I read an article a while back and I’m sorry but I don’t have the link nor do I even remember where it was from, but it had a member of Square talking about how upset he and Square was with Sony’s decision to make the new PS2 not compatible with the HDD, and therefore no FFXI. He said something like "If Sony does this we may pursue other means of hardware for Final Fantasy." That isn’t a direct quote, but it was obvious Square was very upset with Sony.

I would really like to see that quote, because Sony is by no means abadoning the HDD or Final Fantasy XI. In fact, the only way to still get original PS2 in Japan now is to buy the ‘Network Gaming Pack’, which includes the original PS2, a Network Adapter and a HDD – so anyone who wants to get FF11 is certainly still in luck.

Besides, Sony is just preparing for the imminent release of the PlayStation 3 – look how popular the PSone has remained during the PS2’s lifespan. Sony is hoping for the same amount of support for the ‘new PS2’. (Why they didn’t just call it the PStwo i’ll never know…)

PStwo does not support HDD or the original multitap, although there is a new multitap being released for it. I personally would want the PStwo over the PS2 because of the size difference, and because the HDD is sort of pointless (although I bought it anyways), and for some reason it slowed down my machine a lot.

My systems, along with most people i know, anywhere from 14-15 to 30 that have gaming systems for the most part take care of their systems. and everyone i know that has had a ps2 for more than like 2-3 years has had problems with it. theres also complaints about it by other people online and shit too. I take care of my systems just fine. My ps1 is in my entetainment center about a foot and a half off the ground, and its fell to the ground from there a few times since i had it, other than, my systems hardly take any damage. My NES and SNES are next to my entertainment center on the ground, and when not being used, unplugged and covered to protect them from dust or any possibilties of something spilliing on them or anything. My original NES that is about 15 years old, endured way more when me and my brothers were younger. It got dropped a few times, had soda spilled on it, some getting into the cartridge slot and all, and it still plays games without a huge fight. I myself, along with others, have had to sit with a shitty ps2 for over an hour sometimes because the piece refuses to read games

My Ps2 still works fine and it is about 2.5 years old. =/

My system lasted me about 4 years before i ruined the DVD drive… i didn’t take care of it at all however. I’m sure you didn’t take very good care of yours either… or else it was just a fluke… electronics isn’t perfect, when chips get old they stop working, plain and simple. Also, the PS2 is just a computer really. How many people do you know who have had a computer for more than 3 years and have never had to work on it.
