The list was topped by Bob Dylan’s anthem Like A Rolling Stone, and followed by the Stone’s Satisfaction and Lennon’s Imagine.
Overall I think the list was pretty good. Certainly not my ideal one, but they could have done so much worse.
Any thoughts?
Because disagreeing with you makes a list wrong. Obviously.
Welcome to the Ultimate Jukebox: The Second Edition of the Rolling Stone 500, a celebration of the greatest rock & roll songs of all time, chosen by a five-star jury of singers, musicians, producers, industry figures, critics, and of course, songwriters.
So much for your conspiracy theory. Of the 172 voters, I only counted 18 that are directly affiliated with "Rolling Stone" and most of those were Contributing Editors. If you want to whine to someone, whine to the other 154 people that voted.
Your entitled to your opinion, but don’t be so quick to elevate yours above all others. I never claimed the list was some sort of definitive standard. Radiohead is on the list twice, from what I remember, for Paranoid Android and Fake Plastic Trees, two songs that aren’t even in their personal top five in my opinion. No need to get up in arms over it. It isn’t my ideal list either, it’s not supposed to be, but overall I think they did much better than what I initially anticipated.
TK: Yeah, quite a few people noticed that, but both those songs are always in the top ten on these kind of lists, especially when it is compiled from industry folk and writers.
In the magazine, do they say something about each song, like why it was chosen?
I think it’s a bit much to say that any song deserves to be in the top 10 of a "500 greatest of all time" list. Let alone 3 by the same band.
I haven’t seen the list though. I saw the magazine in a class but didn’t bother to check it out. Though I did think about it a little bit.
Yep. The higher ranked songs have a bit more said of course, but even No. 500 (More Than a Feeling *shudder) got 56 words.
I don’t really think those songs are the "500 greatest of all time", but there are plenty of good tunes on this list.
Some of the stuff did seem a little silly to me though. "Dancing in the Streets" in the top 50?
I’d like to read the actual article to see why they chose some of the songs they did.
Also, how in the fuck is anything by Bob Dylan one of the greatest songs ever? You can’t even understand what the fuck he’s saying!
No.
You can’t even understand what the fuck he’s saying!
You can’t? I can understand it just fine, and so can most people apparantly.
Also, how in the fuck is anything by Bob Dylan one of the greatest songs ever?
Of all the possibile list-toppers, you can pick so much worse than Dylan, and very little that is better.
I do like my GnR. But from what i’ve heard the list sucked, from what i’ve seen, it seems like it sucks, and from just hearing the idea of the list and where it came from i would assume it would suck
Bob Dylan is awesome, but really, lets be honest here, ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ is definitley not his best song.
I’ll just imagine that the number one song is Mr. Tambourine Man/ ^^
So a list by a magazine will probably come down to one persons final say, hence their personal choice.
Which is why lists are dumb imo.
