I’m not sure which is the best; very difficult for me to decide. Chrono Trigger is always going to be at the top of the list for me. 10 different endings, being able to replay the game with all your weapons and stats and such, the amount of time you have to put into the game, the storyline. This game always comes to mind when I consider the best RPG ever.
FFVII
Baldurs Gate & Icewind (PC)
Suikoden 2
FFVIII
FFX – Perfect in every way
Pokemon Red – To kick Mewtwo’s ass!
or
Vandal hearts 1
Also, Blood Omen.
Also, Blood Omen.
Blood Omen was not a true RPG, but a very kick ass game indeed. =)
Well, I draw a line between favorite and best, my favorite would be the Baldurs Gate saga, but the best is Chrono Trigger, for the same reason Smokey posted. No single game up to date has had that much multiple endings and game depth to keep playing over and over.
2. Dungeons and Dragons – Since it is best RPG thread, and granted D&D is tabletop, D&D is still an RPG so I’ll talk about that. Think about it, D&D is what started it all. You could actually narrate your own stories, create your own characters, make your own personallity, you can do anything with this game if you have you the immagination.
3. FF7, I don’t need to talk this one, I’m not a fanboy. But I do like this game. And I still play it. So uh, yeah.
Say that again with proper grammar.
I think what he’s trying to say is "I think all rpg’s are good because its hard to make them right. Above all though, is, of course, the great Final Fantasy series, from 1 through 12 (if the game is out yet, heheheheh.)"
NES – Wizards & Warriors series – I have all three of these games, and even if they do fall under the ‘Action RPG’ title, I still enjoy them.
SNES – Breath of Fire II – This was the first console RPG i ever played, and even now, I still have it in mint condition.
N64 – Unfortunately, there wasn’t many which I enjoyed on this console.
GC – I only have Tales of Symphonia at the moment, so I’ll list that.
Master System – Same as the N64.
Megadrive – Phantasy Star II sticks out in my mind for this console…. There’s just something about it I enjoy.
Mega – CD – Don’t have any RPG’s for this.
Saturn – Mystaria Realms of Lore – This was thev ery first 3-D strategy RPG I played and loved. It took me about seven years to finally track down a copy.
Dreamcast – Skies of Arcadia – Not just a good RPG, but it had the one thing missing from the FF games…. AIRSHIP BATTLES!
PSX – This is where it gets hard. Choosing from the likes of Vandal Hearts series, Suikoden series, Wild Arms, Persona, Xenogears, Lunar series and the like. Unfortunately I can’t choose which one I like the most.
PS2 – At the moment, Shadow Hearts Covenant gets my vote for this console.
Xbox – Jade Empire. Just got it, and already I’m hooked.
PC – Simple… all of the old SSI (Strategic Simulations Incorporated) RPG games. These, while old, are still awesome. Some based on the Forgotten Realms novels or the Dragonlance novels. Even now I still play them, not just for nostalgia reasons, but also because they’re good.
I played Holy Magic Century and I liked that.
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Star Ocean 2
Suikoden 2 and 3
Lunar 1 and 2
and FFVIII,IX
Final Fantasy VI (music has yet to be equaled, melody-wise)
Chrono Trigger (could’ve done without Chrono Cross, IMHO)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (I love Link; what can I say?)
I also hold Vagrant Story and Chrono Cross in the highest regard.
Edit: EarthBound and Paper Mario are personal favourites of mine, though many are quick to dismiss them.
My thoughts exactly. Also check out Dark Cloud 2: Dark chronicle and the .hack series.
Ahhh! That game sucked balls.
But I do agree that CC was one of the best RPG’s ever, same with CT and pretty much all the FF besides 11 and 10-2.
Shining Force
Baldurs Gate
Chrono Trigger (Friggin ace!)
Breath of Fire
The list could go on and as for the D&D tabletop game, yeah it rocks if you can get serious gamers to play it!
Hah, the European version is called Dark Chronicle, I have that game. And it’s ace.
i would say ff7 & ffx
Console-wise, I loved Final Fantasy X’s storyline (if you sit there and work your way through it, it really is so well written). Chrono Trigger is right up there with the best, with the characters being likeable and the story being well written. Shining Force 2 is also one of the better ones, and I enjoyed Suikoden. I still need to beat the crap out of Konami for not releasing 3 in Europe.
i have to agree with Liz ๐
Exactly what i was going to write =)
Diablo II,
Diablo II:Expansion,
All the Final Fantasy Games,
And Ragnarok.
I have no more to say, these are the best.
FFVI
FFIX
Morrowind
Star Ocean 2
Lunar: SSS
Chrono Trigger
Notable absences include FFVII and FFX, for good reasons (or so I think).
FFX would be the best thing ever in my book, were it not for the ending. I think Square fracked up big time by allowing players to exceed limits that have been long-standing traditions. Also, with about three-six extra hours of gaming, one can make Yuna so powerful, that Orlandu looks like a chump in comparison. Yuna’s ultimate weapon is wicked easy to get, and way overpowered. With it, I slaughtered EVERYTHING in my path, and I did NOT go all out to make my charries very strong, AT ALL. When you have a charrie dealing 99999 per round, with minimal effort, you have a problem, Houston.
As for FFVII, I personally think it the worst of the series (gasp!). First of all, Cloud is the worst protagonist I have ever seen. Once the coolness factor wears off for Sephiroth, he’s not much better. Toss in the extremely muddled storyline (especially at the end), and it just leaves too much to be desired. Also, Jenova is a deliberate mistranslation of Jehovah (the name of God translated "THE LORD" in most Bibles), and from what I’ve read, Sephiroth is a reference to a piece of Jewish theology (the path of Sephirot, if memory serves). This is important, because by making them the villains in the game, it’s a nice low blow to Western Culture (seeing as it was founded primarily upon Judeo-Christian beliefs) as a whole.
The games that did make my (by no means authoritative) list should speak for themselves, though.
for the N64 i did really enjoy a game called aidyn chronicles the first mage
quite dark and mature for most n64 games
the seiken series will always live on in my heart as my true favorites (pitty about multi platform)
Do i have to say more..he said it all ^_^ but D2 is not the ebst ever, at least not for me, although it kicks some serious butt
Best RPG ever: Final Fantasy VII – end of story ^_^
You want a reason? The setting and Story and music were all just right.
I notice a lot of you have put more than one game despite the topic title being "The best rpg ever!" so will I.
Soliel (megadrive) also called Crusader of centy in America.
Buck rogers countdown to doomsday (megadrive)
Legend of Zelda Link’s awakening (gameboy)
Chrono trigger (Snes) (only played via emulation though…)
Also I recognise that Final fantasy 9 is a better game than 7.
pfft! 9 is my second least favourite but my favourite RPG is probably FFX, outsideof FFs it’d be Kingdom Hearts and Golden Sun (GBA)
Everything else is for LOSERS
Fair enough, However I was so dissapointed with 10 I didn’t even bother with 10-2. I would like to see someone come up with a GOOD reason why 9 is not fantastic.
half of the characters are drawn like children, the storyline is weak and simple compared to other rpg’s, the characters arent as easy to connect to, the soundtrack is probably the worst in all the ff games (that ive played at least), and the main enemy is a dude in a thong. im not homophobic or anything but i dont think very many people who realize this can be completely comfortable with the fact that youre chasing him around the world. ff9 is still a really good game and all despite this, but i think fantastic may be a bit over the top
The following RPGs can’t be matched in awesomeness:
FF6
Chrono Trigger
Tales of Phantasia (This game would make Final Fantasy 1-6 look like a bunch of dirty whores if it weren’t so goddamned hard :()
Well… I can’t really argue with what you wrote, but it’s still fantastic in my mind.
I’m guessing you probably didn’t like the way the characters were designed because you prefer realism? I prefer original designs like 9 over realistic people in 8.
And kuja is rather disturbing I’ll admit, I would say he is more flamboyant than simply Gay as some people claim.
But the story is good until you get to the end when suddenly loads of plot twists are thrown at you for no reason. The crystal and Necron and all that.
If you’re even hinting in the teeniest, tiniest way, that FFVII might, in this dimension, or any other, past, present, or future, be better in ANY way than FFIX…you deserve one hundred and forty lashes with a wet noodle.
By the way, Griff, did Legend of Dragoon have a story? I played maybe half way through it, and I never found one. The battle mechanic with the timed hits was nice, though. Also, Chrono Trigger was WAY better than Cross. Serge’s double-bladed thing was neat, but there were just WAY too many characters to cram into a three-person party. Notables include a Nikki Sixx wanna-be, a masamune-wielding knight named Glenn (THAT doesn’t sound familiar…), and a fracking voodoo doll! But FFIX had characters that were drawn like children…
That’s all I have off the top of my head…. Might edit this later
4) TIE
Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy Tactics
3) Chrono Cross
2) Xenogears
1) Vagrant Story
Anyway I think the character designs in 9 are the best looking character designs in any game ever! (that ive played anyway) theres only so much you can do with humans, but without the limitations of having to look like people you can be more creative.
2.) Star ocean: The Second story
3.) Final Fantasy 8
4.) Legend of Dragoon
In a sense, it is. I’ve got Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. They’re both RPGs. Do what you want, when you want, whatever you want. Even the way one fights off the monsters.
Saying the Zelda games aren’t RPGs is like saying the FF series aren’t RPGs.
1. Final Fantasy VII (PS)
2. Chrono Cross (PS)
3. Shadow of Memories/Destiny (PS2)
4. Final Fantasy VIII (PS)
5. Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES)
6. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
7. Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
8. A Blurred Line (PC)
9. Star Ocean: The Second Story (PS)
10. Dragon Quest V (SNES)
11. Final Fantasy X (PS2)
12. Alundra (PS)
13. Grandia (PS)
14. Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (PS)
15. Final Fantasy IX (PS)
16. Secret of Mana (SNES)
17. Fable (XBOX)
18. Final Fantasy V (SNES)
19. Granstream Saga (PS)
20. Final Fantasy IV (SNES)
I might update my list after playing a few more RPGs that might change my mind. I wonder if the Metal Gear games can qualify as RPGs?
We rode on the winds of the rising storm,
We ran to the sounds of thunder.
We danced among the lightning bolts
And tore the world asunder.
You think nine was childish?
Zidane TOTALLY wanted to dagger Dagger, ikywim.
The amount of sexual innuendo in that game was frustrating, and ultimately fruitless =/
on topic:
The best RPG i’ve played would undoubtedly be Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I know i’ve wavered between this and Jade Empire, but ultimately KOTOR has better replayability – not to mention it’s not quite as short ๐
Childish games are actually quite good. Think about Katamari Damacy or Ratchet and Clank. Childish yet very fun. But wait, how is IX childish?
Considering that Kuja was a man wearing a thong, and had no bulge whatsoever. I’d say he’s actually chic, or a Tranny. Him and Sarah should get together. haha
That’s all I have off the top of my head…. Might edit this later
Ok so you read this and then got into an argument over whether Zelda is an RPG (I beleive its an action RPG). DID NO ONE NOTICE METAL GEAR!? I love metal gear, its ace but how in hell is it an RPG?
My Three Best RPG’s Are
1.Final Fantasy VII
2.Final Fantasy X
3.Final Fantasy VIII
final fantasy seven, of course
ffx2
why coz its free rpg game i had heard other than runescape of course -__-
moreover their cartoon is rather cute *_*
wonderin any online rpg games that r free currently?
Super Nintendow game if anyone does not know
1) Final Fantasy III (SNES)
-> Hands-down the best RPG of its time, and arguaby the best Final Fantasy in the series.
2) Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES)
-> I started playing this about a half-year ago. It’s story was really engrossing, and it had slick graphics to-boot. SE made a big mistake by not releasing a US version of this game, as it is probably the best in the Mana series.
3) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
-> The #1 best Zelda game ever.
4) Chrono Trigger (SNES)
-> Classic game.
5) Chrono Cross (PS1)
-> (even though the plot confuses the hell out of me, I still found it quite enjoyable to play)
6) The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (GBA)
-> The #2 best Zelda game ever. This game had me hooked for weeks. I played it whenever I had a spare minute of two (which was a lot). Which reminds me, I still haven’t collected all of the figurines yet…
7) Final Fantasy XI (PC)
-> This game, although freakin’ impossible to gain Gil, whored up most of my time a few years ago. I wasted so much time with this game, and the people weren’t even that friendly in it. Thus, it isn’t in my top three, but I thought I owed it some credit for allieviating my boredom way-back-when.
8) Phantasy Star Online V.1 (DC)
-> I’m talking about before it went to hell (as in: hacking, BSOD’ing, cloning, PKing, CKing, and just the general n00byness of the PSO population)
9) Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
-> I’ve gotta give credit where credit is due… FFIX was the first one that got me into the series. I <3 it.
10) Mario Kart (N64)
-> Gotta love this game. I especially loved the Yoshis Canyon level… And Donkey Kong’s Jungle. Good times.
I have strong doubts about Final Fantasy VII.
how did that get there?
FFVI
Legend of Legaia
Blood Omen
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Valkyrie Profile
And… that’s about it, that I can recall right off.
Then you seriously need to broaden your view, because you are missing some truly excellent RGP titles.
Example
Baldurs Gate (complete series)
Planescape: Torment (freaking awesome game)
Wild Arms 1 & 3
Legaia 2: Duel Saga
Skies of Arcadia
Baten Kaitos
Those are my most favorite off top of my head.
I only tend to buy the most famous of games, and as FF is the most famous, I bought it
Does those other games that you metioned Neo Xzhan have as good a graphics as FF
Anyway:
Wild Arms 1 looks the most like FFVII graphics wise, it’s a PSX game.
Wild Arms 3 is totally different, art style that is, the game is for PS2.
Both Plance Scape Torment and Baldurs Gate are for the PC, they run on the Bioware Infinity Engine, though heavily modified for PS:T and a new version for BG2. The games both look realistic though filled with fantasy, you have an isometric view of the game.
Baten Kaitos, for the GameCube, looks realisitic and colorfull and fully 3D.
Skies of Arcadia, also for the GC, looks cartoonish/anime-ish but is also in full 3D.
Legaia 2, for the PS2, doesn’t look as good as most PS2 games do, the game however is good enough to look past the fact that the graphics could have been better.
VII didnt used to be my fave, X did. But with all these compalations, its started to grow on me, and it might be the new winner

There are so many better RPG’s out there than Final Fantasy. And the reason that they aren’t as popular is because people like you don’t invest the time and money to try out a game if it doesn’t have the title ‘Final Fantasy’ in it.
And I didn’t earn money either when I was in love with Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and other past great RPG’s. That’s why you tell your parents to buy them for you.
You try and tell my mum that.

I meant the likes of FFX graphics. The FMVs in FF are always good,I wasnt saying it about FF7.I know what the graphics are like in that.
Yes, but most of the time he’s right. Ya gotta take that into consideration.
They’re the best graphics in the world. What other company can do graphics like AC
Is it the ordinary graphics of the game
They’re the best graphics in the world. What other company can do graphics like AC
ILM?, WETA digital?, Pixar?. Take your pick although i`m pretty sure there is many many more.
I’ve never seen a company produce something like AC
Maybe not a feature length CGI movie but it`s possible. It`s not like SE is the leading company in CGI nowadays.
Look at the technical achievements in the Hulk or Gollum for instance. Miles ahead of AC imo.
There we go then
Look it up. I can’t be bothered to type out a definition.
Also, way to ignore Dirge’s point and home in the most inconsequential part of the post.
FFVI
FFT

Amen. Parasite Eve was awesome. >_> My personal favorites: Final Fantasy IX, Star Ocean: TET, Radiata Stories, The Legend of Dragoon, Secret of Mana 3, any Tales game(Tales of Phantasia, Symphonia, etc.) and a ton more. I love anything involving Enix, basically.. they are gods. I have to go through my library sometime. ๐ก By the way, newcomer here!
Vagrant Story
Star Ocean 3

Drakengard
FFVII
FFT
Kingdom Hearts
La Pucelle Tactics
Tactics Ogre
Go fuck yourself. They are all RPGs and you are a big gay homo. Thanks for proving the point that you hate the fuck out of me and will go out on any limb to try and make me look stupid. I reiterate, Go fuck yourself.
Uh, it’s the fact that he has a different explanation for what a true RPG is that what most people do. So you actually just made it worse with that insult ridden post.
Then why does he not mention anything when others post the same titles? It’s cause it’s me. In case you haven’t noticed, me and Prak have a kind of ‘history’ here….
Just wondering which ones you don’t consider RPG’s
Also, Slim, I’ve said similar things to people who listed things like Zelda games. It wasn’t an attack. It was an observation. I’m not always out to get you, but it’s really funny to see you overreact that way, so please don’t consider that an encouragement to change your ways.
I agree
role-playing game
n.
A game in which players assume the roles of characters and act out fantastical adventures, the outcomes of which are partially determined by chance, as by the roll of dice.
Of course, this definition seems to be defining a ‘board’ game RPG, it still means the same thing. Outcomes are partially determined by chance. Whereas, statistics take the role of chance. For example, the luck statistic found in most RPGs. Or the fact that an attack may miss on occasion. Levelling up ultimately falls under the same category. Levelling up makes you better/stronger, therefore improving your chances of winning (Drakengard).
And Prak, the only reason I stated that you personally attacked me was because a small amount of posts prior to mine someone mention FFTactics and they were left happily alone. Also including the fact that, through past experiences, I am your prime target. You must like these arguements. To be hoest, I don’t mind them. It’s almost become a form of entertainment. It must be fun to read two smart people going at it. People’s minds must be changing all the time. Anyway, I hope this clears things up.
Secondly, level systems are not a requisite feature of an RPG. The convention may have grown out of RPGs, but that’s merely because pen and paper/tabletop RPGs were the first thing of their type. These days, such systems are used frequently in pure action games. For example, only a fool would ever call one of the 2D Castlevania games an RPG instead of an action platformer, but many of them feature level systems.
Disgaea:Hour of Darkness (PS2)
Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne (PS2)
Breath of Fire 4 (PS)
Makai Kingdom (PS2)
Golden Sun (GBA)
So, no Final Fantasy is a true RPG?
Correct.
Just because those ar Prak’s definition of an RPG doesn’t make it a solid fact. althought to my definition all games would be an RPG, so i don’t know what to say.
Thankfully, there are people like me out there who do know what to say. And me saying so does not make it a solid fact. I simply say it because it already is a solid fact.
Most of the stuff you guys listed are Adventure/Action/Platformer games with levelling up as a system for gaining power and abilities that help you beat the game.
Saying I’m wrong doesn’t make it so, especially when I offer well-reasoned explanations for my points and you simply say "omg stfu ur wrong." In other words, you simply don’t know when to give up, so you’re looking like an absolute fool right now.
Oh please! Spare me your histrionics and give us a sound argument as to why you think Prak is full of shit because I am failing to see eye to eye with you on this.
Best rpg, chrono trigger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
although i’m not finishing it and stuck at the golmore jungle…
Most of the stuff you guys listed are Adventure/Action/Platformer games with levelling up as a system for gaining power and abilities that help you beat the game.
Would adding a "c" (for console) in front of the RPG misnomer clear things up? Calling games like FF, Chrono Trigger, and Star Ocean "Adventure/Action/Platformergames with levelling up system" is at least as inconvienent as just RPG is wrong.
No, I posted "Modern", a D20 game made by "Wizards of the Coast", a true RPG by every nature of the word. I tend to only consider D&D and other games like that to be true RPG’s, FFXI I think would be one, but I never played it, but I agree, any game with a pre-determined outcome and characters is not.
I do have an interesting question, what about "The Sims" games, RPG? or not?
Well, for example, Prak seems to be the only one that knows any of the information that he provides. He gives no evidence, and when challenged WITH suitable evidence, he simply says it is wrong and he is right, giving us no reason but his own word to believe a thing he is saying. Dragon Quest, a series much like FF, also developed by SQUARE ENIX. Here is an exact quote from the back of Dragon Quest VIII. "A vast and vibrant world is yours to explore in the latest installment of this legendary role-playing series." I am quite sure the critics/developers of the game know a LOT more about videogames than Prak.
I have given evidence in the past, which you should be well aware of, having posted in at least one of those threads. Therefore, you either have the attention span of a lobotomized fruit fly or you’re simply a compulsive liar. I’m not going to attempt to guess which is the case.
Also, great story.
I get confused over what D&D is really. Is it text based RPG covering the playing mechanics and the story?
And is it done on any electronic entertainment or is it more like a board game?
I was first introduced to RPG on the console system btw.
I think Final Fantasy VII was the best RPG for it’s storyline, gameplay.
I’d prefer Zelda (dont start arguing about wheter it’s an RPG or not plz) over any FF game, though I’ve played a lot more FF..
chrono cross
ffx
grandia 3
shadow hearts covenant
DUH!
Absolutely
Well take it from me both KH2 and SO TEOT (sta ocean) are good games Star ocean is especially good but let me warn you ahead of time the beginning is simple at the like 3/4 part of the first disk then it gets brutal addicting but brutal. Anyone who has played knows what I mean.
I agree
I can completely agree. I was a little skeptical about it at first but fear of spending time with my family drove me to find something to do and it turns out the game is sweet.

Uh no, it is a Namco RPG for Gamecube belonging to the tales series
Uh no, it is a Namco RPG for Gamecube belonging to the tales series
Ok i dont see how it would be the second Kingdom hearts game and BP answered the rest
Also if you don’t have this for the gamecube i suggest you get it because it is a class rpg

Tales of symphonia is not that great. Far from a classic IMO.
I thought it was better than a few final fantasies. Why what is the problem with it?
Also i like your avatar
Also i like your avatar
Thanks.. I didnt like the battle system and I really didnt care for the characters or bosses. IMO there was nothing in it that was memorable. I aslo hated how you see your monsters as these ugly black blobs or whatever they are. If thats the case namco stuck to rpg formula and had random battles. But its just my opinion.
Now the questions goes the other way, what was so great about it?
Now the questions goes the other way, what was so great about it?
You know i liked the battle system (i guess it is like Marmite) some of the bosses looked cool (don’t tell me who they are i don’t remember the names ask BP he might know) the music was good. I liked the way the story kept twisting to make you think more. I liked some of the characters like Kratos. (he was my fav) It was simpler how to get moves and the unison attack was handy when you were nearly out of TP. Fair enough they lacked on the imagination department for random enemies but it would be hard to make over 150 enemies look different.
Im not sure how many monsters FF games average but there are alot. Although some repeat from game to game. Im not saying too many monsters lacked imagination, I just didnt like the monsters you run into on the map or throughout dungeons before you get into battle. I didnt finish the game, I lost interest pretty fast. I was really excited about this game too. I was just disappointed.
Yeah i know what you mean. I hated running away from blobs. it was kinda retarded. It would have been harder to make it that you ran into the monster you were fighting you know.
Yeah thats why they should have just done the whole random battle thing. Its far from being the worse RPG. I guess my expectations were too high. I liked it much better than star ocean 3 though.
Yeah some reason just there now i forgot about the random battle system. They should have included that that would be much better
You forgot the way that collete falls at the wrong time and something bad happens to the enemy
Once again, Seymour Guano proves that stupidity and ignorance is indeed infinite.
On Topic : While I may be a hardcore fan of the Tales series, I’d say that Symphonia is the "FF7" of the series ; So grossly overrated, it’s not funny. The 3-D nature of the game made for a nice change and the way attacks chain is quite interesting, but aside from that, there’s nothing revolutionary about the game. I’d easily pick earlier released titles Eternia or Destiny 2 over Symphonia. Especially Destiny 2, the Trust and Tactical LBS really did wonders in balancing out the gameplay by limiting the amount of attacks the player can carry out in one go, that means less cheap combos to be exploited. (Spirit Gauge, Max TP variable to position in battle, guard strike etc)

LOL Seymour does prove that doesn’t he.
I didn’t really like the Eternity game and i haven’t seen the other games in any shop sadly
Kigdom of hearts ROFL
i keep getting that wrong damn
Anyways, best RPG I’ve played. =\ Well Disgaea is easily the best SRPG I’ve ever played (and although I haven’t played the sequel yet, I hear it’s actually better than the first). But not taking into account the Strategy RPGs like that, I’d prolly have to say Valkyrie Profile or Growlanser 2 are my favorite RPGs. Oh! Ogre Battle 64 also holds a special place in my heart. ^_^

I absolutley LOVE!!!!!!!!!! DISGAEA!!!!!!!!!!!!! classic game!!!!!!!!!! Ive always wanted Ogre battle for 64, is it really good?
Quoted for absolute truth.
GBA – Shining Force: Ressurection of the Dark Dragon (I want a remake of Shining Force II dammit!), loved the gameplay and the story and all the extra characters you could get. I’ve replayed it a few times just to have a go at getting the secret characters and cards.
SNES (emulated) – Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia. Both of these had beautiful graphics and sound, and I liked their stories. Additionally I like the mutiple paths that Star Ocean’s story would take, depending upon which characters you had join you.
Gamecube – X-Men Legends II (its an action-RPG isn’t it?). I liked the gameplay and the choice of powers and skills for most of the characters. The storyline was a bit repetitive in some places, but the replay value in the Danger Room missions, hidden characters and dialogue changes (depending upon which characters are in your team / you are controlling) was worth it.
PC – Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption. This was the first 3D rpg I ever played and it was brilliant. I played this for years, when I was at University, because of the multi-player and only recently stopped, because I can’t find the CD’s to put it on my new computer.
1. SNES: Lufia 2 —> This game absolutely cool n i’m really like the stories coz the stories so touched me…
2. PSX: Star Ocean 2 n FF7 —-> I’ve played this game till have all the missions, extras, n all secrets are revealed!!
3. PS2: Grandia 3 —-> the game play, the theme song, the battle system and all of the aspec on this game is very very great… ๐
*Breath Of Fire I & II (SNES)
*Terranigma (SNES)
*Adventures Of Alundra (PSX)
I want to play ‘Star Ocean’ on SNES but my emulator hasn’t got the virtual chip requirement for the ROM. ๐
Mentioning SO2 and FFVII in the same sentence like that is a crime.
PS2 – Dark Chronicle\FFX, I loved the combat system and photo system in Dark Chronicle, and the story and characters in FFX.
PC – Planescape: Torment, my favourite RPG ever. So much depth, crazy characters, plotline was fantastic, world was *fully* realised. So much subquests, actually entertaining just to explore. Combat wasn’t perfect, but dialouge system was excellent.
PS:T wins.
LoM was such an underratted game.. Who else thinks it rocks their left sock?!
…oh and Final fantasy 7 and 8 hands downas the best ff’s. 7 for story and 8 for squall, he is so cool….
/me snickers quietly, suppressing the loud belly laugh, at least for now.
Am I allowed to snicker at this? I don’t even like LoD, but I can at least get the name right. Anyway, I couldn’t even play all the way through the game–I can’t even say that much about FFVIII.
It was a good game but FF9 can easily be considered a better game than legend of dragoon.
I would consider FFVII better, too. And we all know how I feel about that game.
Sins and blasphemy 100 yeas of hell for you. As far as iceburg I have got to play 9 honestly. So many people declare it the best FF by far.
Fix’d. :smrt:
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy 9 -> gnostic themes galore. FF8 and FFT are best FFs though.
Azure Dreams (is > u)
Star Ocean 2 – rough on a few edges, but pretty good overall.
Pokemon series (the main series, not the stupid spinoff garbage).
Xenogears
Planescape: Torment
Darklands on the PC. That game puts all of the Elder Scrolls games to shame. Too bad Microprose went bankrupt grr
Does Castlevania: Symphony of the Night count?
I thought you played the game before? Or is it your first time playing it?:)
Ouch, minus rep points. I was nodding in agreement until I read that.
Does Castlevania: Symphony of the Night count?
W00t! Strike all that minus rep points stuff. XD
First time since a few years. ๐
2., Zelda is not an RPG series, it’s an adventure series.
I concur. Chrystal Chronicles hardly qualifies either.
Still good games though.
2., Zelda is not an RPG series, it’s an adventure series.
Ok will do, And i’ll remember that for future reference… I guess I like mostly adventure games then.
Or why you consider them rpg’s for that matter?
for me their tha best because i like adventure/action/rpg kind of games, and the story captured my interest since the 1º minute
Those are not features of RPGs.
if it exists, it must be pretty lame…
It explains in great detail why games like Kingdom Hearts are actually adventure games and applying the RPG label to them is inaccurate and should be stopped.
ROFL
Which is such a broad term that it can be applied to just about anything released. Hooray for ambiguity!
Oh and prak, what are features of an Rpg?
And I have to agree with Prak here, there are some games out there that may not have the actual label of RPG. But they have far more role playing aspects then some other RPGs do have (KH is indeed more of a Adventure game) but I’d consider the Castlevania games actual role playing games.
And as I’ve been saying, that doesn’t mean it’s really an RPG because the companies that use that label are retarded and don’t know what the term means.
Would you count Deus Ex as an RPG?
An RPG is defined by the degree of control you have over your character’s actions, objectives, and personality. If you don’t have control over all three of those elements, it’s not really a role-playing game.
Therefore, no.
Therefore, no.
By your definition, RPGs have never existed, as objectives are always dictated by someone other than the player.
Not necessarily true, there’s lots of discussion going on between player and DM befor a session starts, so there’s lots of room to insert a player’s objectives in the session agenda.
Don’t you guys just love how the noobs completely ignore any discussion in a thread and just post stuff that ultimately makes them look pretty dumb?
Hmmm. Now considering that my post was directed toward the original intent of this thread, i don’t see how I can look dumb for posting my Best RPG’s.
And you can skip right over my post and continue your discussion.
Unless that is too hard for you
Shut The Fuck Up Prak, now you are just looking for an argument.
Read the topic next time before posting, bint.
And honestly i don’t believe i was talking to you.
Any way as i said for my answer to this thread.
I like FF and Chrono Cross.
For each of those games I love the battle systems, characters, soundtracks, almost everything about each one of those games shines in some way.
For Final Fantasy, I’d say my favorites are V and VI.
All that being said though definitions tend to get skewed over time, and it seems the only thing needed to be termed RPG in the gaming industry today is some sort of stat/equipment upgrade. I mean how many people still think of a bundle of twigs when they hear the word faggot?
And you can skip right over my post and continue your discussion.
Unless that is too hard for you

LOL, n00blet
I will also put Valkyrie Profile (even though I haven’t made much progress..yet)
Yeah.. all PS1 games (i have ps2) lol … like I said I have loads to get on with..
But I also like Valkyrie Profile, Grandia, Shadow Hearts… etc..etc.
Don’t you guys just love how the noobs completely ignore any discussion in a thread and just post stuff that ultimately makes them look pretty dumb?
-Best RPG in graphic
-Best RPG in gameplay, etc.
Think about it.

Honorable mentions include Wild Arms 2 and Grandia II.
I’ve played tons of rpg throughout my life..
I really think i must list a few of my favourites.
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Tales pf Phantasia
Secret of mana
Chrono Trigger
Wild Arms
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy IX
If i must chose from one of these games i will go for Secret of Mana, just because it was the first snes rpg i owned, and it sure brought a lot of joyful hours in front of the tv. Then of course i luckily found out that there were 10 orbs for upgrading to each weapon kind. This was times before i had the opportunity to use internet, and nothing in the manual said anything about ten weapon upgrades.. If i recall it right it says in tha manual that you only can upgrade your weapons 9 times..
And i just love the music in secret of mana.
KHI+ II
.HACK//pt. 1-4
I love all the FF series.
Others are Lunar:SSSC, Star Ocean:Second story and Legend of Dragoon.(Next to Beatrix of FF9 Rose from LoD was one of the coolest RPG characters I think).
Xenogears, the Evangelion of videogames.
FF series (but I prefer FF6)
Secret of Mana
Suikoden
P&P ftw!!!
I love all the FF series.
Others are Lunar:SSSC, Star Ocean:Second story and Legend of Dragoon.(Next to Beatrix of FF9 Rose from LoD was one of the coolest RPG characters I think).
RepPoints for Chrissss!
But Septerra Core is love.
Its an excellent game. I hate the load times but its great.
Oh my god I know, the load times can get annoying.
Oblivion + 1.5 gigs of ram + Athlon 64 3200+ o/c’d to 2.7 gHz + 2 crossfired ATI X1900 XTX cards = no load times…
i don’t care if it costs more than a 360 to get these specs…it’s worth it…plus…it looks better in the end, believe me
i don’t care if it costs more than a 360 to get these specs…it’s worth it…plus…it looks better in the end, believe me
I like the game but Im not going to pay that amount of money to upgrade my pc. That is why I never really got into pc gaming. Oblivion on the pc looks really great, just the load times become a pain in the ass.
Holy freaking crap, we agree on something. Is one of us ill? XD
I was feeling a bit sick earlier lol.
Chrono Trigger- Pretty much the same reason as the Final Fantasy games. Nostalgia’s also a big thing here(same with FFVI); their poor graphics and rough(at times- certainly not my favorite) combat systems are endearing.
Ocarina of Time- The characters aren’t that interesting. The story isn’t any big deal. It’s just a really fun game, to the extent that I’ll put it on the list.
Diablo II- There are better games out there. I know this. There are no characters and the plot’s no good. The gameplay is good, but it’s just combat, and Ocarina of Time beats that out for its puzzles. I include it here based solely on replayability, which it has in spades- it took me a lot of years to get really tired of it.
Torment- Probably my favorite computer game ever made(including consoles). Christ, considering how much this game gets overlooked, it is amazing. The characters and storyline are at least as well developed as any Final Fantasy game or Chrono Trigger, but with a more engaging combat system that doesn’t quite have the instant gratification of Diablo II but keeps the game moving along better than most turn-based games. It also has a lot of the same puzzle-style gameplay as Ocarina of Time, but with plot in mind.
Although I don’t really see it as in keeping with the thread theme, I’ll mention PnP RPGs that I’ve played.
D&D 1st-2nd Ed- First RPG I ever played, amazing game. I do not, however, acknowledge the existence of a 3rd Ed due to its incredible inferiority. This system is great for simple, gamist roleplaying and dungeon crawls.
Cyberpunk 2020- Not a very versatile system, but fun as hell. Cyberpunk is an awesome setting.
Seven Leagues- Essentially nobody has heard of this due to the small scale of it. Released locally by a friend, I in turn worked to modify it from a fairy tale system to one that would give the game master complete control and creative freedom. It’s something that relies heavily on both a good game master and good, engaged players
Xenogears for PSOne kicked ass. Then there’s also Secret of Mana for SNES. Ocarina of Time will always be dear to my heart. And my personal favorite FF6.
However I’m getting tired of hearing how great FFX was – OVER-RATED!
all time favorite tie between star ocean 2 and ff tactics.
battle wise star ocean 2 story was great not to mention the 80 different possible endings, it also had one of the hardest last bosses i’ve fought to date, story wise my favorite is grandia 2 i just love the whole story and it has my favorite soundtrack battle song and over all song.
ff tactics music was superb. i wish they would do a 3d version update with more job classes etc. i’ll shut up now i could post pages if wanted to about rpgs. but i know you people have better things to do that read through me spamming on about the how great so and so is. thats my picks anyways
lol
i think the terms cost-no-object apply to me and how i feel about my PC
even though i’m still in college…making almost $20 an hour is way too much…so i decided to do a complete overhaul on the system that built back in high school =P

I wish I had that luxury. Rent, bills, bills, and more bills, plus I just finished paying for a wedding so, you get the point lol.
Im still getting the wii this weekend ๐
Im still getting the wii this weekend ๐
lol
trade your Gamecube in for some cash, that’s what i’m gonna do…though i’m not gonna get it for the launch titles…i like how it’s the only fully backwards compatible system
as for the wedding…i think the average wedding costs around $19,000…ouch
don’t forget to mention taxes…tax money that we don’t see again since it goes to people who milk the welfare system (especially illegal immigrants)
i live in california…so i see that shit all the time and it pisses me off to no end knowing that i’m unwilliingly spending money on people who don’t pay taxes…all i see is 40% of my paycheck going to an unworthy cause
So thats you in the avatar eh? nice nice boy now go back to sleep.
his lack of comment on games other than FFXII furthers the notion…
yes, vitorio…i took a look at your posts to see what you’ve had to say…
and it’s not all that thrilling…Naruto and FFXII junk and this talk about FFVII
So thats you in the avatar eh? nice nice boy now go back to sleep.
Here’s your word of the day! (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=asinine)
Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound, each for the uniqueness they contributed to the RPG genre.
Forced to pick, I’d have to say Earthbound. It’s just so silly and easy to replay over and over again =) the visuals are subpar, but the cartoonie graphics suit the characters as well as the story they play out. The music is simple, but cute in that it isn’t annoyingly repetitive to the point where it makes you want to shoot your tv (battle music in ffgames anyone?) It’s cute level more than makes up for any of its shortcomings.
Star Ocean the Second Story wins hands down. I also reccommend and love Thousand Arms for its wit and hilarity, also for a nice easy battle system and lovable characters. Dark Chronicles for it’s build your own town kind of thing and I LOVE and ADORE its soundtrack. Lunar is just well…phenomenal…the stories are deep and classic, will stick with you forever…the characters are unbelievably memorable as well. Dot Hack is probably one of the deepest RPGs I’ve played to date…as far as storyline goes, the dungeouns can get a bit repetitive though, but you barely notice when you’re wanting so bad to know whats going on youd kill any monster a million times to figure out the mystery. Wild Arms are a classic…takes you into the wild west and charms you with nice battle sequences and tunes you can whistle to. DewPrism is nice and dark at some points, but the idea of playing two storylines and getting a bigger scope is fun,a nd the characters here make the meat of the game, they’re so irisistable. Suikoden can be fun at times, but gets a little flat….I like the wide expanse of towns and places you can visit on some of th egames though. Zelda is duh…a classic, and who couldn’t love Majula…okay so I’m weird like that. Ephemeral Phantasia is awesome if you can get past the first "mission"…its an awesome game but extreemely hard, thus it got bad ratings, but if you’re really experienced its so much fun you’ll play it for weeks….strumming on Patimo. Bumpy Trot is a new addition…combining freedom with a nice story…and you can play in a band, so it’s very fresh (and you can be a badass too…so who wouldn’t want to do that?). Rhapsody is a nice, charming tactics RPG with a fairy tale story and cute characters…I love the music to that game, actually…..
I think I should stop now….I’ll be back with more later….I could go on FOREVER about RPGs, and probably write a novel for each one I own (and some I don’t own but wish I did….<.<)
First I’ll tell all the RPG games I’ve played (and mostly own as well). So you have an idea what I am choosing out of.

Out of the games the best RPG I’ve played is FINAL FANTASY IX, I’ve spend over 100 hours finishing everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. And the Story, Characters, Music, Gameplay, all played vitals roles in why I like it so.
If I had to choose a best only than Final Fantasy games, it would be out of;
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Dark Cloud Series
Kingdom Heart Series
But all in all, I think all my RPG games are excellent. I only wish I had more of them, but being Australian means I have to wait longer for some of the newer RPG’s like Final Fantasy (III, XII), and then some RPG’s we don’t even get.
And I’m done.
Lunar Eternal Blue

Yes, I did not play a single FF game ^_~"
Though I saw my friend playing a FF game once, and I found it a cool game, but I do not own a PS(2/3) so I could not buy the game for my Gamecube.
But now on the NDS there is a FF coming out, I think I will buy that FF game if it gets good reviews and stuff ^^
My fav’s are:

FFIX
Morrowind & Oblivion

Pokemon
I dont know why they like it so much either lol. It was good but over rated IMO.
The game is visually stunning. That cannot be denied. I really didnt like the battle system. I also didnt like how the summons were used. It was a good rpg, but far from the best IMO.
My top 10 (Yes Most of them are Final Fantasy)
1-FFVIII
2-FFVII
3-FFXII
4-The Legend of Dragoon
5-Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
6-FFIII
7-Kingdom Hearts 2
8-FFIV
9-FFV
1-FFI
Skies of Arcadia
Vagrant Story
Suikoden II
Final Fantasy VII
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI
Valkyrie Profile I
Wild Arms for PS1
KOTOR
Shadow Hearts I & II
Manga Carta Tears of Blood
I usually like good plot and Unique control set-ups so that is why I like some of the ones on the List. As for FFX I rather enjoyed the way they used Summons it made them Feel stronger then they normally would otherwise and it was a better set-up then FFXII had espically since you could make your most earliest Fayth powerful if you chose to do it.
STORY
First and foremost is that of the story of Xenogears and any loyal fan will agree. Without ruining a single detail of it’s mastery I will explain. Never before have I played a video game that touched upon so very many issues the real word we live in today faces. The difference in levels of society, A hierarchy of chosen few who choose to manipulate each of these societies through fear and deciept, how through such action confusion and betrayal is unavoidable, religeous conflict and dominance, the mess of politics, the labarynth of the human mind and how easily twisted it becomes as well as special pschological problems that can develope within it, and so much more. The pace was mostly smooth, each chapter blending into the next without the blink of an eye. Never again do I expect to be graced with a story so powerful and relevant within an RPG.
CHARACTERS
Without great characters, a promising story might as well be an empty shell with no substance to command attention and form it’s entirety, and the characters of Xenogears are no exeption to this rule. They are the heart and soul of the story and stand as beacons of the genious of the game. They were all real on some level, posessing personal history and path incredibly shocking but also emotions that seem almost tangible they are so easy to relate to. The bond between each really brings to light the backbone of friendship and trust and how both of these can sometimes be compromised for the ideal of something greater. Empathy between player and characters is undeniable and I myself hope it to be fateful. The "villians" of Xenogears are indeed included in this description which deems them even more interesting in their entirety. Save for one "villian" that I know of, an in depth past accompanies each making thier downfall into corruption understandable and therefore questioning how evil they actually are. Though their acts are undeniably terrible, their motive and drive must be taken into account. Such quality makes for great characters. (Sephiroth for instance). I, for one, will not easily forget what each character had to offer and the ones that opened my eyes to things I had not thought about before will always have aplace in my heart.
MUSIC
Ah yes, Xenogears OST. Composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. Yes, the same who wrote for Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Xenosaga. Of course all of his works are amazing. I owe much of my sanity to this man and much of it is in debt to the XG OST. The story, characters, and music should all work hand in hand and this game is a prime example of the fact for as stunning, epic, and emotionally stimulating as the rest of the game is, the scores match it forming to it appropriately. Yasunori Mitsuda has never let me down for even without playing the games first one can simply derive the emotional context of it through his masterwork. Xenogears was the best example of this though I might be being slightly biased. ๐ Simply breathtaking.
BATTLE SYSTEM
For the day and age the game was created, the battle system was quite unique. Not only being able to engage in combat on foot, but in large mechanically manipulated machines called "Gears"? Awesome! The combo idea though slightly repetative by today’s standards was exiting back in the day! Up until that point battle within an RPG had been slightly generic give or take a few exeptions here and there but Xenogears nailed it once again with battle system. Some might compare it so Evangelion but don’t ask me to specify and comment. I never watched Evangelion so I have no say in the matter.
It’s crawled a bit past my bedtime now so I will move to conclude this everlasting post of mine but I must add the following. Xenogears was brilliant. Each aspect is worthy of some sort of praise in my opinion though I realize that everyone has a right to their own even if by chance, it differs from my own. I just speak from a personal standpoint when I state that the game changed so much inside of me that words may not even be able to express. Please forgive the passion that spurred such a burst of lengthiness but the topic was such a temptation I could not help myself. ๐
Alright, time to go catch some Zzz’s!
5) FFIX
4) FFX
3) Kingdomhearts 1
2) FFVII
1) Kingdom hearts 2
1. Final Fantasy VI(By far in first!)
2. Chrono Trigger(By far in second!)
3. The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past(I might be overrating this now)
4. Final Fantasy VII
5. Final Fantasy X
6. Final Fantasy Tactics
Those are the only rpgs for me that are perfect or near perfect. None of those bottom four compare to Chrono Trigger for me. And for me, Chrono Trigger doesn’t compare to Final Fantasy VI. Final Fantasy VI is just so far out there storywise and overall that I don’t think I will EVER in my life play another game as great as Final Fantasy VI was.
2 ff3
3 w of warcraft
FFX is the greatest FF game I have played.
My fav’s are:
FFVII
FFVIII
FFIX
Morrowind & Oblivion
Pokemon
Bahahahahaha, you say you don’t understand why people like FFX so much, yet your favorite game is FFVII? I need not explain myself why you fail so hard.
PlaneScape: Torment.
For me the best RPG ever. The best story I’ve ever played, but it’s not one where you’re trying to SAVE THE WORLD FROM IMMENENT DOOM. It’s a really personal story which I really apreciate. It’s really well worked out, the characters have good voices and great humor.
Xenogears gets an honourable mention for the absolutely adult level of story.
And I’m quite impressed by the 3 hours I spent with Kingdom Hearts, an enjoyable battle system and from what I saw an interesting sotry. -3 for the nausea inducing camera though.
I’d say something about Final Fantasy here, but… come on just look at the name of the friggin’ website.
Sir Dan Rules!!!!!!!
Legacy of kain:Blood Omen
FF VII
Wild Arms
Chrono Trigger
Story of Thor
but i Choose Final Fantasy VIII
I Found the Characters Brilliant
You Had Squall a Man scared to get close to others and always lost in though.
Zell the Lively Fellow easily agravatedbut also is a know it all
Rinoa The Damsel in Distress Caring though can be selfish
Irvine Ladys Man hes pretty cocky which can get him into trouble
Selphie the lively one…okay i didnt like her much lol but she was lively and cherrful
Quistis the teacher aka the wise one?
Siefer Squalls Child Hood Enemy his complete opposite
what i love about FF8’s story is i parts a Romantic love story and how a man who is shy and keeps to himself grows to notice hes around people who care about him and even love him.but then how when your playing this game the story and objects change so does squall.theres a great deal of contrast between squall at the beginning of the game to the end of the game.
I found every part of the game interesting somthing was always going on(unlike ff12…),Like the Garden Battles remember the start of that your just flying around then suddenly your into a huge war i foudn it quite breathtaking, but what about the intro of this game easily the best intro to a game that i have ever seen, the music is fantastic and has the right tone and pace to fit the action on the screen.
Now about the world and how it was designed.if never seen a better designed world, i love the era/time zone which the game is in its sort of futuristic but then its not to far in the future (Esthar may be an exception)
do you see what i mean by a mix of futuristic and modern mixed. i like the way the colours sometimes shine like metal on the G.Garden and how the buildings designs look like symbols. Also i have to say that the Last bosses on ff8 are the most amazing visual experience ive ever seen in gaming.the atmosphereof the colours and shades gives it such tension and the design of the bosses (along with the dramatic soundtrack) especially the last one. the monster if you will has so many bright contrasting colours over shades of gray and the area is in space black space whith stars and its all just so clear and shrap but in a good way.ive not seen anything like it to this day.
but For The Game Play, alot of people moan at the Junction System because it too complicated when i personnaly find it very simple, the only problem with the Junction System is that it Limits the use of magic because the magic is stored to make you have more HP attack power ect. but other than that everythign else is fine,i like how the game has Levels on the characters,i like how you can get limit breaks by low health or Aura magic and how when you charge up to use the G.F/Summons in battle they actually have a set Hp so if the Enemy its you while your charging for the G.F attack your G.F will take the blow and die.i also thin the graphics of the battles are probaly the Best of the PS1 while in battle and smoothed out on the PS2 it looks great.

http://rpgeternity.altervista.org/GF%20FF8/doomtrain_ff8.jpghttp://rpgeternity.altervista.org/GF%20FF8/Diablos_ff8.jpg
as For extra things to do you have weapons to upgrade, the Card game which is brilliant and addicting,a chocobo system which kind of failed due to it relying on the Pocket Station and many other side quests
Also i found FF8 entertaining all the way through where that be events always happening in storywise when i got to new places to battles casting GF’s to exploring the beautifully crafted world that Squaresoft gave us.not only do i find Final Fantasy VIII the best RPG iver played but also the best game ive ever played. If any game can be called a masterpiece or a Pice of art id say FF8.
Other RPGS I like:FFVII,FFIX,FFX,KH1&2,Star Ocean 3 Till the end of time

Becuase I don’t really have a Job I can’t afford games…If I could My favorite RPG Game list would be Much Bigger.
I have to go with Final Fantasy VI. It has a large, well balanced cast of characters. The game is equivalent to an ensemble cast movie and requires a delicate balancing of the backstories of all the characters with the limited time they are allowed for each. I think they did it magnificently. These characters were not formed on the day you start a new game, they have engaging and worthwile backstories that make you love or hate each and every one of them (save Gogo and Umaro, but you get the idea).
Each character has a reason for resisting the empire and, therefore, joining the party. The graphics are the best in any sprite-based game I have ever seen and the environments are large, detailed, and engrossing.
The contrast between the World of Balance, and the World of Ruin is beautiful. I actually feel sad to see the world be ripped apart and feel desperate and desolate when you have to begin all over again. You have to reunite the last sparks of the hope in the world and make one last hail-mary assault.
The music is instantly memorable and ranges from ecstatic (Johnny C Bad) to tranquil (Kids Run Through the City) to everywhere else on the emotional spectrum. It isn’t my personal favorite, but it is the best I’ve played. Xenogears comes close, so very close, but ultimately falls short, IMO.
I did this with:
FFVII
Breath of Fire 3
Chrono Trigger
Xenogears
Suikoden 2
Final Fantasy Tactics
Castlevania SOTN (Even if you don’t consider it an RPG.I Played it to death.)
-Bahamut Lagoon
-Crono trigger
-Final Fantasy IX
-Final Fantasy X
-Terranigma
-Vagrant Story
Do you want me to do that? I’ll do it by request, but I’ve completely given up on talking sense into people. When you guys completely destroy the meaning of the term and make it utterly useless, you have no one but yourselves to blame. I get the luxury of sitting back and laughing at all the fucktards who never bothered to listen to me when they still had the chance.
Breath Of Fire II
Golden Sun/The Lost Age
FFTA
FE Sacred Stones
final fantasy 7
star oceon till the end of time
kingdom hearts 2
Inspired me to play the SNES games too, and their wow factor is through the roof.
But so far, it’s Knight Online.
FFVIII
FFX
ChronoCross
Honorable mention to FFVI and Chronotrigger (have a hard time putting them in the top running since I started with 3d PS1 generation games, but they are great games)
plus all the job crossing, everything from alchemist, and squire,.to ninja/samurai,bard,.probably 30 job classes to mix, match and master,.and of course the story line charachters, and hidden characters,.beowolf, the divine knight, dragon charmers/3 headed white hydras, beast tamers, very powerfull robot,..plus sidequests that level you up,and give you exp…and of course, guest apperances by cloud, and aeris,.
next of all time pic,..ffx,.beat both of these, like 5 times,.and of course among my top 5,.ff12 and rogue galaxy,.

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy X
Tales of Phantasia
Lunar: The Silver Star Story
Lunar: Eternal Blue
I was not here at that time. Could you remind me ?
By one commonly used definition of a role-playing game, Pac-Man is a fucking RPG because you "play the role of Pac-Man." Of course, that makes no sense and makes the term useless. I can continue, but this isn’t the place. This is the place for people who don’t know the difference to spout off while I laugh at them for their foolishness.

Oh, ok. completely agree with you. There’s also an other point. I call it the liberty problem: these games only offer a very limited panel of possibilities, contrary to P&P RPGs, like Shadowrun or L5R. Other problem: you don’t create the character (Ok, in some games like Fallout or BG, you do, but you still can’t say to Elminster to go and get lost with his prophecies…).
And sorry for treating you of moron in the other post. and of idiot by now.
And sorry for treating you of moron in the other post. and of idiot by now.
You hit on the entire essence of the issue right there. People refer to games as RPGs without knowing what role-playing is in the first place. The liberty problem, as you put it, is exactly what it boils down to.
Never played a TBRPG or something pretty well known like Oblivion or Diablo before either =/
Best ever. Such a game, such a great story
EDIT: is the OST here y/n
Meh, Oblivion is much better.
SICK! Oblivion holds your hand through the whole game. The combat sucks, the physics suck, the AI is horrible. Sure the combat in morrowind is roll to hit and they could have increased the hit rate I still prefer it over oblivion. I’d rather have the limited AI in morrowind that the "free form" ai in oblivion where everyone does the same thing every day.
i tried kh1 and 2
THEY SUCK
I really love that game. I want to see a port of it either on the wii virtual console or the DS.
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts Covenant
The Suikoden series
That is not a RPG.
Final Fantasy I & II – Dawn Of Souls
Suikoden V
Final Fantasy Tactics
Suikoden IV
Final Fantasy Anthology (Final Fantasy V & VI)
Nearly all the games evoked in this thread are not RPG, but Adventure games…I still wait for a true RPG where i will be able to play a villain and finish the game, in my very own sick way (IE: killing every thing between me and the ending credits)…:naughty:
So far, only Fallout 2 allowed me to do this…:-P
+rep
So far, only Fallout 2 allowed me to do this…:-P
Play Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. You can kill anything, even when doing so will prevent you from actually finishing the game.
If The Castlevania series with S.O.T.N gameplay counts, I will add it too.
I’ve played a bunch of RPGs and is difficult to choose hahahaha
It’s coming to the virtual console. I read it on Wikipedia. What I’m hoping for is a true sequel.
Thats the best news Ive heard in a while. I really love that game.
KOTOR 1 and 2
Chrono Trigger
Elders scroll 4 Oblivion!!!
i miss that game when my uncle moved out he took Star Ocean: The Second Story and breath of fire 3 ….
Also ocean star was really good and so was dark cloud
i dont think the makes of hack dont intend to stop making games
the first series was good as far as story goes and the battle system wasnt all to great
but the newer one gu is amazing
.hack 1,2,3,4
.hack//g.u
Kingdom Hearts 1&2
and of course FFX,FFVII,FFVIII,FFXII
1. Chrono Trigger – Amazing concept, very entertaining, and probably the one I would still be willing to replay until I die. It truly lasts through the ages.
2. Tales of Phantasia (PSX) – First game I played in full Japanese, amazing battle system (since I previously only had seen turn based ones) and I loved the storyline along with the humorous innuendos.
3. Tales of Symphonia – Being like a sequel/prequel to ToP, it was definitely a game that I loved for its characters. The characters are cute, and beyond that, I have always loved the anti-hero villain introduced in games.
4. Final Fantasy VI – Kefka is awesome, there really isn’t more I should have to say about that one.
5. Valkyrie Profile 1 – The voice acting in this one was fantastic in my opinion and I loved the gameplay. I don’t think anything could have been more fun than doing thousands of points of damage to your enemies with a long string of attacks — Nibelung Velesti!
6. Sword of Mana (AKA Final Fantasy Adventure Remake) – My favorite gameboy game remade, one word…Kickass.
And that sums up my top 6 of all time favorite RPGs ๐
2. .hack//GU Vol. 1 Rebirth/Vol. 2 Reminisce (Still Waiting On 3 But I Know Whats Ganna Happen ^-^) (PS2) – Large improvments in the new series games plus the storyline is amazing plus the battling system wow. This is way better then FF all the way and you can count on that.
3. Star Ocean 3 Till The End Of Time : Please tell me a game better then this (KH is one that dosent involve FF) action packed and real-type battling system and dont tell me final fantasy because it cant beat this not even the corny new one 12 because FF12s storyline sucks it practicly put me to sleep.
4. Tales Of The World RM : Ok so who wouldent like to have the tales series characters in a protable system? This is the best Tales of series game up to date.
5. Golden Sun And The Lost Age : If you have forgotten about this rpg your a sad person. Basicly one of the best long rpgs i ever played in a gba (Besides pokemon cuz that dosent count no storyline just repeat the same old thing in ever game "gatta catch em all and beat the trainers to be the best" oh yeah some storyline woo-hoo) this game took alot into to be played and basicly the graphics and music are wonderful.
@Kwiqsilvr: Every tales of series is not combined with any other. Each one has a seperate storyline. Now if you played ToW then thats when u can call it a sequel to all of the tales of games
2. FFX
3. FF7
4. FF9
5. The KotoR series
6. Oblivion
7. LoD
8. Xenosaga series
9. KH series
10. FF Tactics series
Oh, I totally agree with you. What I meant was the storyline and characters are almost parallel. But there are definitely many differences as well. Anyway, both games are in my top 5 because I like them so much.
Hybrid Heaven
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Disgaea
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy VII
Chrono Cross
Online- Trickster. Damn, it’s a copy of Ragnorok, only cuter!
Dragonfable- Sequel to Adventure Quest. Your character actually moves! WOW! XD
Not online- Kh2. I don’t have a Ps2 (Yet. I’m saving up for one currently), but I played it at a friend’s house.
FF: CC- No, not Crisis Core. Crystal Chronicals. Probobly never heard of it, but it’s real. AND SWEET MOTHA IS IT AWESOME ๐
Edit- Baten Kairos Oden. The name is so confusing I might’ve got it wrong. Pretty much Kh: CoM only on the gamecube, better graphics, and it’s way better. Plain and simple.
Suikoden 2, Grandia, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Cross, and Lufia 2.
Star Ocean 3, Chrono Trigger, and a heap of ones i’ve forgotten about.
I’d easily say Final Fantasy 7 is the best i’ve ever played, everything about it is incredible. I’ve played 10 for countless hours, Love it. Star Ocean 3 i THOROUGHLY enjoyed, finished it multiple times. I played SO1 a bit, and i liked it, but i lost that somewhere =(. Chrono Trigger was really really good, but i didn’t like it as much as some others.
Bob’s Big Adventure, ftw.
And another RPG that I will never forget is Anito: Defend a land enraged
It`s just so awsome RPG…. So much freedom, so much fun… ANd the battle system really impressed me… You can try it youself, I`m sure you are going to like ti! Tee-hee!
wtf…
then why does it use the same battle system as FFX(LOTR the Third Age)?
Xenogears
FFVIII
im too busy with an actual life outside of sitting in front of a tv screen/compy screen to pay attention to details…mainly because im not completley obsessed with it… though being a member of a forum devoted to a series of video games is nerdy
Runners up would include: "Earthbound" (Mother)."Arc the Lad: Twilight of Spirits", "Breath of Fire III", "Final Fantasy VI", and "Legend of Legaia."
I dunno why, but I always feel the connection between me and Squall, like I understand him completely, like I playing my other self…(sometimes I’m introvert, anti social and don’t care what other peeps thinking too)
FF VII?? (bleh) I quit playing after I defeated Sephiroth, watched the stupid ending and not bother to maxed everything or do the chocobo sidequests…>_< yep I only played once and THAT’S IT!!
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Suikoden
Final Fantasy VI
Breath of Fire II
Robotrek
There are others, but these are probably my favorites
but there is a group which stand above all, the Shin Megami Tensei Series!
More precisely SMT Nocturne Maniacs… some love it, and many hate it…
Deep and dark atmosphere, chalenging difficulty, terrific replay value… and it is the most powerfull of the series artistically speaking.
In second place I would say BoF Dragon Quarter.
Ridiculously high difficulty and almost infinite replay value… need I say more?
It inspires me in my real life.Really.
I’m still playing and finishing Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (for the 5th time..). More action game than true RPG but it’s more "adult" than all these Japanese RPGs.
I’m older know, so I guess my "Final fantasy mania" is over…
Not true at all. The freedom you have in determining your character’s actions and personality make VTM-B much more a part of that genre than the Jap adventure games masquerading as RPGs.
i also loved how FF12 came out of the turn base but te story was weird
My favorite was no doubt Dragon Quest XII just because of Yangus (beef)
but FF7 i mean come on the 1st FF to be in 3D

Front Mission SUCKED!!!!

This may be one of the most retarded reasons I have ever heard a moronic fanboy state for liking FFVII, you really are an idiot, and posting 3 times in succession to say the same thing? fuck off.
Well it’s not based on turn by turn… that was my general idea in my comment. let’s say Action RPG, OK ?
I hate now "statical" games such as true RPGs (final fantasy, …).
I like to be, as in Star wars KOTOR good or bad !
As in real life everything is "gray" and not black or white.
In that sense, KOTOR and VTM-B can be classified as actual RPGs, while Final Fantasy and its ilk are adventure games that ignorant Japanese people called RPGs simply because they didn’t know what a role-playing game actually is.

The problem is RPG, in contrary to other game types, is a very broad category. The two main types of it are Western rpgs (what most of us consider "true" rpgs) and Eastern rpgs (the FFs, BOFs, SMTs…).
The two have different approaches and differing level of freedom/plot/gameplay… Afterall, when it first came out, Diablo I was called an RPG, and now, everyone admits it is rather a hack n slash. An even bigger example, these horrors called MMO"RPG"s are considered rpgs despite the complete lack of any role play (ok, maybe by the munchkin definition they are).
Arguing about what game is an rpg is something that can last a VERY long time.
That aside, my favoroute RPG ever was Baldurs Gate II: Shadows of Amn (+ Throne of Bhaal). The plot was great, the party members were interesting, you weren’t just doing a succession of dungeon crawls with a half assed reason. The only bad side was that I never really found the villains all too great.
This is the game is use as my standard when playing other rpgs. Needless to say the good ones are far and few between. NWN I was a massive dissapointment, The Elder Scrowls series just felt boring. Good thing Kotor 1 and 2 were here to catch up. NWN II was better but was not quite yet as good. I still await for the game that will bring back the sensations procured by BG2. (just fwi, i also played Plascape Torment and loved it).
There’s a very simple way to determine which games actually are RPGs. Just figure out if they allow you to define your character’s personality traits, actions, motives, etc. In that sense, due to the capability being there for those few who choose to make use of it, MMORPGs are named correctly, or at least not wildly incorrectly.
I’ll give you this much. You have good taste. BG2 is still the standard I hold every RPG up to, and Throne of Bhaal is probably the best expansion ever made. I wasn’t as disappointed by NWN as you were – I mostly liked it – but I will agree with you on the Elder Scrolls games being rather dull.
It is only later when having choices on what to do that the modern concept or rpg games, more true to the tabletop definition, appeared. The earliest example I can remember (I might be wrong or ignorant of others) is Lands of Lore II where Luther had a lot of moral choices to do in the game. The one that really boosted the genre was Fallout (happy memories) and gave a LOT of freedom (and Fallout II took it to the next level).
Now, if we look at eastern RPGs (I’m giving them this name, so that we know what we’re talking about), they fit the conditions to be rpgs under the early computerised definition of rpg. They have leveling and stats. If we use the "true" definition of rpgs (the tabletop ones I mean) then yes, I agree with you, Eastern RPGs don’t fit that definition.
No, wait, Chrono Cross.
God, marvelous music CC has ๐ *remembers the good old days*
as well as that morrowind, KOTOR and oblivion
(suikoden 4 is sucks..>.< )
and star ocean second story. ๐
No, wait, Chrono Cross.
God, marvelous music CC has ๐ *remembers the good old days*
i concur…plus the fact that battles weren’t random meant you could do a lot more exploring without feeling rushed
While I do find myself in agreement with the main thrust of your argument (Eastern "RPGs" not truly belonging to the RPG genre, as most possess no real self-insertion on the part of the player), I will say that I tend to call these RPGs anyway, though I freely acknowledge the difference between the two subsects. I use the common-used RPG definition to refer to these games for ease of understanding at this point because it is known by most what is being referred to, even if there is disagreement that they fall under said category. (This being said, I’d be inclined to call the games -you- refer to as RPGs as "traditional", myself, and view the newer RPGs as a newer, "contemporary" genre.)
While I am fond of the traditional RPG, then, to use the definition I just established, they do not – most of the time – tend to be most enjoyable for me. (This is partially because, if I’m going to indulge in such a genre, I’m going to be picky as hell about the setting/characters/ad nauseum. Exception goes to D&D which I play on occasion as a social game and enjoy as such; the interaction, being by definition a true MMORPG, making it interesting enough to bypass my pickiness >_>;.) While Arcanum/Morrowind/what I’ve played of Baldur’s Gate series are by no means bad, I just don’t enjoy them as much, I find.
As for contemporary RPGs, for which I think this thread was intended by the creator if not by all of its inhabitants… (Warning: I’m a gameplay freak, and thus tend to glide over plot issues unless they are egregious. Just FYI.)
9.8: Persona 2: Eternal Punishment [PSX] – It has its problems, I won’t deny that. but. It’s… pretty much my ideal style of game. Also, "WHUP-ASS TIME!" never gets old as a battlecry.
9.4: Final Fantasy Tactics [PSX] – The plot makes me twitch a bit. The character customization is pretty bloody awesome, and scaling randoms means there’s challenge even outside plot.
9.4: Breath Of Fire: Dragon Quarter [PS2] – I can’t justify this. It’s just the sort of game I really got into.
9.1: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne [PS2] – Plot? What plot? Gameplay-only ranking, here. That plus style kinda made the game for me.
9.0: Legend Of Mana [PSX] – See BoF: DQ.
8.8: Phantom Brave [PS2] – Morona is stupid. Gameplay is amusing and easily broken, yet with challenge. I’ll take it.
8:7: Final Fantasy V [SNES, GBA] – See FFT. Plot has no right to exist, I enjoyed the battle system.
8.4: Digital Devil Saga 2 [PS2] – Made playing the first game actually worth it! Also, one of the few games with a plot I liked.
8.2: *Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 (SRT:OG2) [GBA] – Arguably a strategy game, not a contemp. RPG, but I find the game quite interesting/challenging.
8.1: Wild Arms 4 [PS2] – Again, generally cool gameplay, plot wasn’t offensive.
Yeah, this was taken from my list on another site, copy-pasted here w/ reasoning.
I’m not sure which is the best; very difficult for me to decide. Chrono Trigger is always going to be at the top of the list for me. 10 different endings, being able to replay the game with all your weapons and stats and such, the amount of time you have to put into the game, the storyline. This game always comes to mind when I consider the best RPG ever.
agreed, not to mention the PS1 version, with 30+ different endings and anime cutscenes.
I am gonna have to disagree here. The utter lack of difficulty in that game is quite a bit of a turnoff. Plus, the combat is far more reminiscent of the early 90’s side-scrolling beat ’em ups than an RPG.
Disgaea series and i really enjoyed Grandia III first part of the series i played though but it was fun.
-Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
-Tales of Symphonia
-KOTOR I/II
-Gothic 3
-Final Fantasy IX
-Valkyrie Profile
are my favorites
then…
Neverwinter Nights
hopefully…

Golden Sun 1 & 2
Lufia 2
Suikoden 2,3,5
Dark Chronicle
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

Plot Wise?
FFVII: Crisis Core / Before Crisis, FFVII, Chrono Cross.
Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines
Mass Effect
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts series
.hack series
Morrowind is a big contender, because of the music, and the ambiance of it all. I just love Morrowind all around.
Breath of Fire 3 has some great music, a truly memorable soundtrack. Never gotten far into it, I have it on my list of "Games to Play." I’m sure it’ll be one of the great RPGs I’ve played, depending on what I’ve heard.
I have a soft spot for Front Mission 3. It’s the manifestation of Linear Gameplay but customization differs far from that. I really do enjoy playing this game and it’s up there on my list.
My last one, Deus Ex: The Conspiracy. Just a great game, period.
FFVII, IX and X
Tales of eternia
Wrong thread, dude. Go to the music request section.
It’s the only RPG to keep me playing for two years and I still cannot stop.
Too bad not many people have played this masterpiece, I suspect there would be more people listing it as their favorite if they had…

It wouldn’t have mattered the game came out at the Saturn’s death. Only a handful of copies was released over in the States. Now you have two choices, pay some guy on Ebay 200$ or more dollars for a copy, or take THE OTHER route.
As for best RPG’s go.
Final Fantasy’s IV, VI, IX, Tactics.
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Xenogears
Suikoden II

TALES OF ETERNIA
1. Final Fantasy VIII – The world was so well developed. I hated the fact that you couldn’t go into towns on the 4th disc because the ending movie took up so much space. The fact that when all was said an done, I liked every single character on this game, even Seifer smiled because things turned out well for him too. The junction system offered the most versatility of any battle system in an RPG to date although it confused the heck out of a lot of people (I really feel for those that never understood the full ramifications of the system). I thoroughly enjoyed nearly aspect of the story and the fact that you could get almost every item two different ways was awesome. The card game was pretty fun and didn’t suck like the card game on Final Fantasy IX. If you really took the time to understand the world by reading the information on the computers, etc. it opened your eyes to all the detail in the world. I was able to see what happened to everybody at the end of the game and I felt perfect satisfaction with the ending of a game for the second time in my life.
2. Lunar: The Silver Star – In order to fully appreciate this game you need to play both the Sega CD and Playstation versions because together they really compliment each other and solidify the world where the other lacks. I absolutely loved the characters! They were rich with personality and humor and yet even the youngest of elementary school kids and oldest of adults could relate to them. This game is like the adventure you always dreamed of going on as a child. Even the white dragon tells you that diamonds are actually made of his shi* and doesn’t understand why humans prize them so much! From the Sega CD version, the sheer scale of the Magic Guild of Vane and all the information there in the libraries and not forgetting Damon’s Spire together they paint the most incredible picture of the world of Lunar and you see that detail realized in the Playstation version. From the scene with Alex playing the ocarina to the boat scene with Luna, Alex discovering that Ghaleon is the Magic Emperor himself, and Alex overcoming countless trials and sadness to become the Dragon Master and lay it all on the line to save his childhood companion…this game has all the makings of what should be in a game with extremely high production values. When I finished this game I was certain that nothing could ever rival the emotions that the ending evokes…until I finished Final Fantasy VIII. However, Lunar: The Silver Star is so close to Final Fantasy VIII that I sometimes feel I have a hard time naming my favorite but I think that the more humanistic styled characters of Final Fantasy VIII is the key in keeping it as my favorite since it is a little easier to relate to someone who looks more human. I played all the Japanese versions for the Mega CD, Sega Saturn, Playstation, and Game Boy Advance just to understand the depth of this game’s story and it adds a whole new dimension since Working Designs changed some important information in the English translation which comes from sub-characters. Not to mention the fact that Luna’s song on the boat in the English version is completely different so you never understand her feelings which have started sprouting an almost naive love toward Alex like you do in the Japanese version. The Game Boy Advance version really doesn’t add much to the world of Lunar although it makes some drastic changes and these changes are also reflected in the 4 volume set of novels for Lunar: The Silver Star. If you have not experienced this game, I recommend it to anyone from ages 10+ so that you can really understand it. My utmost appreciation goes out to Keisuke Shigematsu who penned this rich story and whom I have had the personal opportunity to speak with about this particular work.
3. Tales of Phantasia – PSP version is the best out of the SNES, PSX, GBA, and PSP versions. Once you play this game, you will understand why it is so awesome and had so many top-selling remakes.
4. Tales of Rebirth – PSP version is the best out of the PS2 and PSP versions. It is hard not to think this game is better than Tales of Phantasia since the story is absolutely relatable to anyone who has ever been treated differently because of their race or how they look. This is by far the best "Tales of" game since Tales of Phantasia.
5. Wanderers from Ys III – PS2 version is the best one out of the NES, Genesis, SNES, Turbo Duo, PC, and PS2 versions. My favorite Ys and an awesome story with awesome music, and best of all awesome gameplay.
5. YS 1 & 2 Eternal – PS2 version is the best one out of the NES, Turbo Duo, Sega Saturn, PC, and PS2 versions. A must play for any RPG fan. These two games fit together as one game so you have to play both to understand the whole story.
6. Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana 2 – This is a must play and the best game Gust has ever put out.
7. Phantasy Star IV – This should be your first and last experience with the Phantasy Star series although the PS2 remake of the original Phantasy Star was quite good. The production values for the time this game was released were unsurpassed on the Sega Genesis.
8. Eternal Arcadia (Skies of Arcadia) – Hands down the best RPG Sega made since Phantasy Star IV. Playing is believing how incredibly awesome this title is.
9. The Legend of Heroes IV: A tear of Vermillion – PSP version is the best out of the PSX, PC, and PSP versions. This story is awesome and keeps you interested from start to finish (except for the small part where you have to collect donations). Excellent visuals and music as well. A must play for any PSP owner.
10. The Legend of Heroes V: Cagesong of the Ocean – PSP version is the best out of the PSX, PC, and PSP versions. Humorous, light-hearted and definitely for those who want to revisit a "going on a quest" type of game from their childhood. High production values and those who love Lunar: The Silver Star will most definitely love this one too.
11. Tales of Destiny 2 (The real one for PS2 and PSP not to be confused with the PSX title, Tales of Eternia which was called Tales of Destiny 2 in America for some unknown reason) – This is another great game penned by the great Keisuke Shigematsu, the script writer of Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue for all those Lunar fans. The last boss on this game is a pain in the as* but other than that, an awesome game.
12. Dragon Quest 2 – The Super Famicom version is the best out of the NES and this one. Definitely a must play for all kids.
13. Etc. etc.
There is so many other games I would like to mention which come to mind that are not RPGs like Soukaigi, Dual Hearts, Tokimeki Memorial Vol. 2 – The Colorful Lovesong, Vagrant Story, Ace Combat 5, Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Super Castlevania IV, Full Metal Alchemist 2, Fatal Frame, Fatal Frame: The Crimson *********, Fatal Frame: The Tormented, Shadow of the Colossus, Onimusha 2, Summon Night 2, Summon Night: Ecstasy, The Legend of Zelda, Zwei!!, and the list goes on for miles…but as for some of my favorite RPGs, I hope you get a chance to play them sometime.
Xenogears for PS1
The Legend Of Zelda The Ocarina Of Time for the Nintendo 64
Xenosaga trilogy for the PS2
Tales Of Symphonia for the GameCube
The best Adventure RPG – Terranigma SNES (only jap/pal)
This Game is the greatest classic on the Super NES and bitterly unknown, because it was never released in the USA. But however the story has so much epic touches, emotional moments and unbelievable good music that anyone who plays it the first time ‘ll be shocked whats possible on 16bit consoles (and without rendered sequences or other crap like that.)
The gameplay is a amazing mix of Adventure and RPG which is really fun to play. You find very much parallels to the real history of human and earth (with a view religional things in it -> no realease in America) and the player feels very connected to the game, beacuse you create or affect everything.
For me it is the greatest game ever made. Terranigma has only 2 different Endings but I played about 9 times to the end.
The best Classical RPG – Chrono Trigger SNES (only jap/us)
The game was never released in europe, so I got it very late into my hands. But this game was absolutely amazing! I was overrolled from the largeness of this game. The tough story and good Ideas make it to the best round- based RPG of the SNES and all time. Time traveling was never transformed into a game as good as in Chrono Trigger. The Nine Endings gave it the last kick to perfectness.

The best Tactic RPG – Final Fantasy Tactics Advance GBA
I spendet about 250 hours on this game to get every mission, every secret and so on. AND IT NEVER GOT BORING! This is amazing and rarely seen on other titles… The only problem was the childish story of this game.
After you have done special things in the game it gets very easy too, but no problem, the game is pure motivation and pure fun. The job and skill learning system is the key to it. But the great sounds and beatiful graphics will do their best, too. (Be carefull: The sequel A2 on DS is not as good as the first title)
The best Action RPG – Front Mission: Gun Hazard SNES (only jap)
I cant tell you very much about the story, because I hate emulation and played the orignal, but the gameplay of this game is absolutely great! Do you know the Super NES Game Cybernator? Sure you do. Just keep that title in mind but freaking bigger and with RPG element like leveling the characters, mech parts and equip yourself with others. Not only the streng of your mech will change – you can see it in the graphics. It has a ton of levels with a lot of graphical highlights, enemies, bosses, buddies, different missions and background settings. Did I mention? Its a Square game ๐ And yes, its fun as hell!

Wait a while though the site is down.
I USED to like Leveling Up and such in an RPG mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 (PC), but not anymore. I played that same mod for about 3 years.
I also have a game called MapleStory (PC) that happens to still be installed that I’ve completely lost interest in Leveling up in that game too now.
I used to play others like Pokemon too, but completely lost interest in those games as well.
So I guess I don’t like any RPG’s anymore x_x
Chrono Trigger
Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Pearl
what would you compare it to??
Gameplay could use some work, but it’s definitely got one of the best scripts=my main reason for playing RPGs.
But yeah, the battle system was somewhat of a let down, especially when you consider it was based on the same engine as Baldur’s Gate.
Xenogears,
FF7,
Dragon Warrior 1 on the NES.
– Final Fantasy as a whole, duh.
– Valkyrie Profile series
– Golden Sun 1 and 2
– Etrian Odyssey 1 and 2
– Lost Odyssey
– Dragon Quest (especially V and VIII)
– Pokemon (especially Gold and Crystal)
– Chrono Trigger
– Kingdom Hearts (I liked the first one more)
– And a long etc…
Honorable mentions
FFX – Cant stand the FF Series, FF7 is the most overated game all time, any genre but really enjoyed 10. Sephiroth would get his ass handed to him by Lunars Ghaleon any day of the week & twice on Sunday.
Elder Scolls Oblivion – Not my typical rpg but great game nonetheless
Tales of Vesperia – Got it a month ago for my bday & still havent found a chance to play but it looks great
Star Ocean – I think it was 2 that was my fave but both 1 & 2 were decent rpgs
Shining the Holy Ark – Really good Sega CD rpg that gets no credit at all….ever
Shining Force CD & Growlanser Generations – Not true rpgs I know but were good games nonetheless
Suikoden – I believe 2 was my fave, 3 was good also tho
Baldurs Gate Icewind Dale – Decent enuff to be mentioned
Fallout 2 & 3 – 2 was good, 3 is really good altho not my style at all
Breath of Fire – 3 was ok
Lost Odyssey – Only a few hours into it but like most modern rpgs its letting me down but has potential to get ok maybe so Im not giving up on it yet
1. FFVI-X (that was the more fruitful period of square company existence…as for me)
2. Wild ARMs 1 (it was my first jrpg… )
3. Xenogears (i really love this game…for many reasons)
4. Lunar EBC
5. Chrono Trigger
Never played D&D before but my friends told me to try this out because they thought I might like it.
Legend of Mana
Final Fantasy I
Fallout
Zelda: OoT (since everyone is listing, I will too, even though I don’t think it is ‘really’ an rpg, but oh well)
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga – Mario & Luigi are perfect in this humorous and rich RPG game. I really want to play Partners In Time as well.
Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom – Only one in the series I have played, but it is soooo addictive. Can’t wait for the next one to come out.
The Dark Spire (DS) – Just got this game and I already love it, even though it’s realllly hard. But it is awesome ๐
Lost Kingdoms (GC) – Rented this a really long time ago, but I loved the card combat system.
– Lost Odyssey
– Secret of Mana
– Star Ocean 3 Till The End of Time
– Final Fantasy IX
If I’m limited to just choosing one…
Crap, I can’t decide between FFIX and SO3…I’d probably go for SO3.
Yup. SO3.
First game of the Star Ocean series I played and the one that made me fall in love with the series. Now playing through the First Departure remake on PSP and loving every second. However, I do feel they cocked up somewhat with the SO4 for 360. Monotonous little girls do not, for a good game, make. Nor do cat girls either. Gauntleted maniacs are alright in my book though.
The only game which you can do whatever you want ๐
Yo , this shit almost brought tears to my eye!! lol!! Your so right man, its such a good game and just such a good story…
Doesnt it just amaze you that out of almost 30 pages of posts only like 5 people have even mentioned Xenogears? Thats like less than any game….
Even people that normally like good games and listed some of my favorite games…. no mention of xenogears anywhere.
Guess it is going to stay an underrated classic forever ๐
Chrono Trigger
Twinsen’s Odyssey (LBA2)
Earthbound
Star Ocean
Shadow Hearts because of the creepy atmosphere and the cool disc fighting system and Earthbound because of the unique setting. *Fuzzy Pickles* ๐
Persona 4.
M3 has a great storyline
Superstar Saga is good. I’m still workin’ on it.
Super Mario RPG – Such a classic.
It had a unique battle system where you input commands to punch and kick, and turned those into various combo moves, or you could summon forms of monsters that you can absorb after killing them. All in a turn based system. Very entertaining, and only got tired of it after I played for a few hours at a time.
I could go on for a while about the game, but I’m at work right now. Just wanted to see if anyone else has played it?
so is the second one
so is the second one
Did you played the 2nd one?
so is the second one
Oh yea! The second was good, not as good as the original I think, but both were excellent rpg’s. I looked back through a couple pages on this thread and I’ve seen it mentioned a couple times, and that’s a couple times more than usual. ๐
2. Chrono Cross
3. FF6
4. Lufia 1 & 2
5. SMT III: Nocturne
6. Xenogears
7. Xenosaga
8. Legend of Dragoon
9. Super Mario RPG
10. Digital Devil Saga
11. Breath Of Fire 1-5
12. Parasite Eve
13. Secret of Mana 2 & 3
14. Panzer Dragoon Saga
15. Landstalker (more like a zelda type than rpg right?)
That’s all I could remember. I like them with a good storyline.
You are now my new best friend
I really love Drakan , and i’m really sorry that none create a game like it….
(Ego Draconis it’s nothing than Drakan)
Maybe someone Create GTD ( Grand Thief Dragon ) >_<
By story: Baldur’s Gate II and Final Fantasy 7
It was too hard to decide which one I should name, because I like them all so much. Baldur’s Gate II is a roleplaying classic of course, and I think BioWare makes the best RPGs ever. I really liked FF7 Though, because the story had several twists + I like Vincent.
By characters: Definately Final Fantasy 6.
By possibilities: The Elder Scrolls – Morrowind and Oblivion; I really felt like I could create any character I wanted.
By longlivity: Ultima Online – Playing on a roleplaying server for almost 7 years. What else could I say?
Steambot Chronicles
Star Ocean Second Story
Persona 3
Dragon Quest VIII
Ar Tonelico (first one)
Atelier Iris Eternal Mana
Lunar 1 and 2
Grandia 2
Tales of Vesperia
Dark Cloud 2
Shadow Hearts(first)
Epheremal Fantasia
It’s not really in order, it’s just the order I remembered them. I have a really bad memory, so it took a while to get all those out. There’s probably others too. FFV was my fav Final Fantasy, the job system was brilliant!
I liked the Second Star Ocean the best, if only 3 didn’t pull the whacked out plot twist it did…I don’t have a 360, so I can’t speak on 4, but I’m really looking forward to the international version.
Ar Tonelico was awesome, and the music was top knotch, but the second one just felt lacking compared to the first one. Plus, the cast of characters just fit me more with the first one.
Atelier Iris was only good with the first game. The rest of them just couldn’t compare. And atelier Rorona, what little I’ve played of it so far, may just one up it. But I’ve had so little experience with it, that I can’t put it on the list yet.
Persona 4 was good, but the 3rd one just won me over with the more dark and sinister plot.
Dark Cloud 2 was everything that I wished Dark Cloud were. I couldn’t have been more happier with that sequel.
Steambot Chronicles was an experience that I had never encountered before, and it really was an enjoyable game, yet frequently overlooked.
If you’ve never played Epheramal Fantasia, then you’re seriously missing out on one very awesome game. It’s similar to Eternal Sonata, but WAAAY better in my opinion. it also seems to get bad reviews, but I loved every second of it, and had no problem with the time loops.
Dragon Quest VIII was just…epic. That’s really the only word to describe it.
The Lunar series was one of the greatest game series of all time. Then working designs disbanded, and someone else took on the games, and they horribly mangled it. I haven’t checked out the PSP remake yet, but it looks promising.
Grandia II, possibly my most remembered game of all time. It used to be my favorite, but I’ve since moved it from that position. It still holds a very high place, and I’ll probably never forget Ryuudo Elena and Millennia. The third one was actually quite good, and the extreme game was also decent. I didn’t like the first one, mainly for personal reasons that probably won’t influence many people’s like/dislike of the game.
The first Shadow Hearts brought in a combat system like no other, and really confused the traditional sense of an rpg. But, it was immense fun, and never disappointed. The second and third were also quite good. I just found the first to be the most memorable.
Tales of Vesperia really brought my faith back in the Tales series. After Legendia and Abyss, I was really doubting that a Tales game would be as fun as Symphonia was. Vesperia turned out to be even better than Symphonia, and the PS3 port is looking to improve that even further.
Although I’ve probably posted in this thread more than once, my main favourites are in no partic order:
– Jade Empire [beautiful setting, whimsical characters, also loved the Spiritual side of it]
– Fable I and II [although the latter was a slight disappointment I felt]
– TLoZ: A Link to the Past [although more of an Adventure I suppose]
– FFVIII & FFX [sentiment more than anything I suppose now, but still brilliant games]
– TES: Morrowind
I’m currently playing through Risen, finding it to be rather patchy to be honest. I think I’m about an hour from the end. Although I’ve enjoyed most of it, I think the difficulty curve is way to steep, some of the missions are poorly explained/not explained at all, and there are quite a few bugs. It also seems to lag quite a bit in a similar way Fable does on the Xbox.. despite me having a pretty decent Dual Core Intel CPU, plenty of RAM and an 8800GT. Maybe my PC is just dying though.
Oh and Tales of Symphonia
Dragon Quest VIII
Kingdom Hearts
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Tales of Eternia
FFIX
FFVI
FFIV
FFXII
My usual disclaimer: Yes, I love all FF games equally, don’t get me wrong, just those four stand out to me the most.
I also enjoyed Valkyrie Profile, FF7, FF9, & if you guys consider it a RPG, Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
That’s one of it’s charms =D
but FFT is the most acclaimed Tactical RPG along with Disgaea, it’s not that underrated, the genre itself is not famous enough to consider that it has good or bad rates.
If you liked FFT Story, go for Vagrant Story & if you want to play a TRPG that has a storyline with that kind of dimension, check Vandal Hearts I & II.

Vandal Hearts came out 6 months prior to Final Fantasy Tactics, and wass the second TRPG I played (First being Mystaria: Realms of Lore on Sega Saturn, which Vandal Hearts was also released on in November of 1997, only in Japan though), but I enjoyed Vandal Hearts far more than even Final Fantasy Tactics.
I recommend looking for Vandal Hearts if you can. The sequel was ok, had a bit more micro management, but still a good game.
your mom plays bad games
she has no time she is a phone sex operator
your mom takes pride in her work
i once called her when she was at work it made my pants feel weird
:stopposting:
LOL @ the fag who judges another male’s looks.
While some of the games listed here I wouldn’t play myself, that’s the choice of the player themselves. Who are you to play Judge and Jury on what people play?
Riiight… stop posting nonsensical posts/threads and start being a productive member of the forum, instead of a hatefilled, insecure and immature asshole.
Kingdom Hearts – VERY special game. My all-time favourite RPG AND video game.
FFIX/FFX – For sheer awesomeness! Plus, I rather like the battle system in FFX.
Ookami – Very unique and imaginative. Plus, who doesn’t love RPing as a wolf?
Chrono Trigger – Duh!
Tales of Symphonia – No words can convey my love for this game. Fantastic and powerful storyline!
FFX had a good ending ๐ก
Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer’s Call.
Final Fantasy 7.
Final Fantasy 8.
Final Fantasy 12.
Star Ocean: Til the End of Time.
Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords.
Mass Effect 1.
Could possibly include Secret of Mana as well, but I haven’t played that since it came out, so I don’t know how it would stand up, these days.
If we’re classing Zelda games as RPGs (which some people do), then Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time would be on there.
FFX had a good ending ๐ก
No way. the whole idea that the main character is a dream? what a waste ๐
Gameplay wise its ff12 bcause the inovating battle system and expanded world.
(New here btw)
-Pz-
A lot of people like Persona 4 over 3, but for me P4 just lacks of so many things that made P3 so awesome and unique. But I got to say, Adachi is one of the best "villians" I have seen in an RPG.
He’s not "bad" because someone rape his mom (I’m seeing you Sephiroth), he is bad because of believable reasons, I will not give any spoilers, but damn he’s a fine piece of well executed character.
No way. the whole idea that the main character is a dream? what a waste ๐
That’s was an intelligent ending, no… for a Final Fantasy game that ending was (and still is in some aspects) brilliant.

What is rpg?
Get the fuck out of here you troll. This person has been going into all my threads saying to listen to perfume. Someone delete this beotch.
What is rpg?
Role Playing Game.
perfume <3 has been doing that in a lot of other threads MastaM, not just yours.
This guy is COCONUT MILK disguised on another account.
If he/she’s not. My bad.
EDIT: MastaM if what you say it’s true. I support you dude!
My friend say he use rpg in army and now is court.
Why role playing game dangerous? Is it because role play as terror?
Can any mods in here ban this troll?
My friend say he use rpg in army and now is court.

In military terms, RPG stands for Rocket Propelled Grenade. Completely different definition than Role Playing Game.
But I agree with MastaM… time for this troll to be banned.
lol wtf
If he/she’s not. My bad.
EDIT: MastaM if what you say it’s true. I support you dude!
Wouldn’t surprise me if that’s true topopoz… ‘perfume <3’ reeks of CM’s bullshit.
However, I’ll give ‘perfume <3’ the benefit of the doubt and respond directly to the last post:
I am not troll, honest. I am human. You people are be mean to me, I am very hurt. Please ban those two for make me feel sad! Plastic smile make me happy though! yay!
You haven’t contributed to the topic discussion at all, type in broken english (though that may be a second language so I let you slide on that) and overall post nonsensical and moronic posts in the majority of your posts here.
Either contribute to the topic of conversation, or go away. If you don’t like what I’ve said…
mine would be ff9

I also think Super Robot Taisen OG 1 and 2 are great.
Another favourite RPG games are all from Nippon Ichi, like Disgaea series, Phantom Brave or Makai Kingdom.
Also, I have no idea why I didn’t mention Phantasy Star IV in the very first post I made here.
And then FF VI, VII, and IX
Chrono Cross, Kingdom Hearts
Really? I thought it was a MegaTen game.
Well, ‘one of the best’.
I actually adore TES3 and FF6 myself.
I also love the MegaTen series for being weird and fun.
But, CC is one of those JRPGs I can play for an hour or twenty, just depends on my mood, and not get bored.
I know it’s far from ‘perfect’, but I think I’ve beat/logged more hours on CC than I have of any other RPG.
I’m agree with you. Phantasy Star 2,3,4 are great for me.
But maybe now my best one should be Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2.
Seconded although the ending of sith lords practically demanded a sequel. too bad they are going the way of WoW and soon squirming deeply into the hearts and wallets of gamers with gusto
Vagrant Story or Legacy of Kain – for plot and story.
Neverwinter Nights or Witcher – for non-linear gameplay.
Final Fantasy – for atmosphere.
God of War – for riddles and puzzles.
Diablo – for simpleness.
That would be my favorite rpg game. Only if one appeared in the near/distant future.

oh yeah that would be good indeed. throw in an open world rpg ala elder scrolls or fallout.
I think many people may prefer the linear experience but im not one of them unfortunately
The best are:
Kingdom Hearts/KH 2
Final Fantasy IX
FF X
Tales of Vesperia
Persona 3 Portable
… at least they are IMO.
World of Warcraft is definitely the best pure RPG on the market, but it’s hamstrung by the fact you have to rely on others to do the best content.
Knights of the Old Republic is the best Star Wars game ever made, but is also lacking in the RPG-ish department.
So…i’m going to have to say Fallout 3. Fallout: New Vegas has a better story, but it’s more bug-ridden than a streetwalker’s nethers, so FO3 is it – especially with the expansions, which are all fantastic.
I said it earlier here, but I want to restate it.
well also FF IX,,
Chrono’s Trigger (SNES)
FF6 (SNES)
FF8 (PSX)
Morrowind (PC)
Mass Effect (PC)
Xenogears (PS1)
Tales of Destiny 2 ( PS1)
KH 1&2 (PS2)
FF X&XII (PS2)
Suikoden 3 (PS2)
Mass Effect 2 (360)
Tales of Vesperia (360)
FF 13 (PS3)
Resident Evil/Biohazard 1, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis and Resident Evil 4!
Diablo 2
dragonage
regular rpg – Earthbound (Mother 2)
Including Suikoden 4?
luckily the kid wasn’t mine
Ultima underworld:this game is so friggin hard because its huge and you have to map everything.
Suikoden 2:I think the main characters are slightly better and nanami is quite funny and jowy is epic and so is the evil prince luca.Oh yeah:suikoden 4 sucks, the stuff are too easy to get because they are all cramped in together.
Breath of fire 1-3 are epic indeed and worthy of mention.
I never played kotor so i can’t say, maybe i’l download it to try a demo or something?
Final fantasy 6:best one in the series to me followed by either 4 or 9 as second and 5th would be third in the series.
Parasite eve 1 and 2:I don’t understand why people hate 2 so much,i mean:its a survival horror but thats what its supposed to be?
I loved PE1, and I like 2 as well. But the problem with PE2 is that the storyline moves away, does not make sense and it has many many facepalmish moments.
The monster design though is superb and many battles are fun and exciting.
It’s not a bad game but it’s waaaaaaaaaaaaaay inferior compared to 1. Specially in regards of the music, storyline and characters.
One of the things i love,is the achievements like:polygamist. The good and evil is your basic american rpg thing nowadays, and the horns and halo thing i guess is the way to tell if you are evil or good.
I had a good male magician guy,but i took the sex change potion by accident and turned into a girl and then i deleted the game.
I started all over and now i got a female who is evil and a male who is good.
Best is difficult as said before,i think ff6 is an excelent game in the series and i hold it up high above 8 7 9 and X.
I like X more than 9 and i like 9 more than 7 or 8 and i like 4 more than 9 and x.
So favorite final fantasy:6-4-X-9
Favorite dragon warrior:1 and 8 because i haven’t played the others yet.
Favorite non final fantasy square game: so far:parasite eve secret of evermore and chrono trigger
Favorite richard garrison game so far:ultima underworld ultima 3 ultima 8 and ultima 7.
Favorite konami rpg:Suikoden 2 suikoden 1 and suikoden 5,but i think suikoden 5 is slightly better than suikoden 1 and a whole lot better than suikoden 4.
Favorite bethdetha game so far:oblivion, might try call of cthulu sometime because i hear its good, but i will need some info on this.
Favorite lionhead game so far:black and white.
favorite namco rpg so far:Tales of symphonia.
Favorite game arts game:Grandia 2
Favorite capcom rpg:breath of fire 2 breath of fire 1 breath of fire 3 and willow are from the same maker i believe:tokuro fujiwara.Oh:no influence on breath of fire 3.
Least favorite rpgs of all time:FFXIII FF7 FF8 diablo and suikoden 4
reasons:I can’t stand the characters and story or lack of story anda gameplay.
One of the worse games i’ve played ever:Secret of the stars
reason:Story is so damm horrible:Homncruise haha damm thats bad
Another:Eternal quest
Reason:its not like a true rpg,in fact:Its just a mindless hack and slash and without any intelligence required.
Oh yeah:i played might and magic 6:it was actually a good game and maybe some day i’l play it fully.
Hope i didn’t go on too long.
Rankopedia: Best RPG Video Game of All Time (http://www.rankopedia.com/Best-RPG-Video-Game-of-All-Time/Step1/19024.htm?refresh=76774784)
For me its Baldur’s Gate II.
Hands down.
Followed by Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics, FFVII, Breath of Fire, Fallout, Suikoden and Grandia.
For me a good story trumps all else and that includes gameplay and graphics.

Heh,diablo is more gameplay than story bro.I find that funny since you mention diablo.
Diablo is your simplest hack and slash game, its all gameplay and hardly any story actually, and its very hard too when you start getting to the end.
Chrono trigger certainly has a interesting way of telling the story and the characters are quite likeable, and it certainly deserves credit.
Chrono trigger in 2006-2007 i think it was, made me feel something for it and i was never even played it in 1994 or 1995 or whenever it came out.To me,if a game can do that to a new player, then it certainly has a charm that makes it quite memorable.
Breath of fire 1 is a very good game and i enjoy it immensely. You will have to give me which char you like the most from bof 1 bof 2 bof 3 etc.
Suikoden 1 is a very good game and loved it,but suikoden 2 far surpasses it and ff7 in my opinion. The end is so sad and i end up feeling sorry for jowy.
I never played grandia 1 but i did play grandia 2 and loved playing that game.My favorite character was definitely millenia and ryudo.Love the funny dialogue i get from millenia and how she is supposed to be evil but she has a soft spot for kids.
Fallout 3 i played and its story was actually interesting.I liked how you could affect the story very early on and do such evil deeds that on the radio you could hear of your misdeeds and they call you villainous monster and such.I have a char in fallout 3 who blew up megaton and enslaved a bunch of people.
FF7:good game, but in my opinion not the best game evarr, not the best final fantasy either.
I actually think ff6 is superior and ff4 and ff9 and chrono trigger and FFX,but ff7 is one of the better ones in comparison to ff8 FFXIII and FF2 and 3 on the nes.In my opinion:massively overrated.
Oh yeah:i never played baldurs gate but i keep hearing about that damned game,i’m going to have to download it someday, cause it actually looks good.

The rpg’s that gave me the best feeling as a child were
Legend Of Legaia
Digimon World
Legend OF Dragoon
The Persona Series was pretty good as well
But my top 5 in no particular order would be (Excluding MOTHER 3)
-Chrono Trigger (Nostalgia Googles GO!)
-Final Fantasy VI (Amazing storyline and great cast of characters)
-Radiant Historia (Great gameplay, music and art, probably the best of this generation)
-Breath of Fire IV (I picked this over II mostly for the gameplay and setting)
-Paper Mario 2 (Blah blah, gameplay, blah blah, music, blah blah, story)
Oh yeah:I liked magic of sheherazade as a kid quite a lot.
Oh yeah:I liked magic of sheherazade as a kid quite a lot.
True! Got alot of <3 for Link!
Can’t really choose my fav though.. I’ve got like 150+- games, mostly RPG’s. And I CANNOT choose.
But.. Final Fantasy VIII was my first RPG that got me to love a whole lot more. So I guess all my creds should go to that one.
Although I also have alot of love for the Zelda-series, the Tales series, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Dragoon, Suikoden and then obviously the FF-series..

Including Suikoden 4?
Had to click Like on this one (‘:
This one did almost everything wrong:
The boat fights are a downgrade from fighting on a horse.
The giant boat isn’t as exciting to have as the actual castle, which has loads of rooms and a cook in it and such.
There are a lot less places in the game to go to,and the 108 stars are all crammed into tight spaces.
Skies of Arcadia – air pirates! giant world and epic armades fight with magic and guns! Awesome characters that you start to like after one look.
Grandia – my really favorite. This game is really piece of wonder, give kick ass to your imagination, contain fantastic story about growing up, first love, friends and foes… it fees so bright like you did all this not Justin.
System Shock 2. Shocked me with brainfucking story and strange gameplay, contain most smart and awesome villain of all times – Shodan. Also game permanently frighting you.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. – you think it is shooter? Nope. It is REAL RPG, you play your role as stalker, receive ranks in the world, interact with NPC’s, proceed quests, buy weapons and armor in shop – so, it is RPG. Contain really apocalyptic world, so real that you can find locations like in Stalker on your urban peripheral zone. Also in Russia and Ukraina Stalker’s locations everywhere, brings game close to me. It is my world, just some darker than real.
Other games can also be really great and goes to do-not-miss list, like Chrono Trigger or FFVII, or Mass Effect, but we talk about RPGs that touches you most, is it?
P.S. I do not know who might so like western rpg’s… they cool, but not touch the heart for me.
Man, what an amazing game it was. It saddens me that there won’t be another game like this one.
Thousand Cuts and Legendary Strike were my favorite styles.
2. Final Fantasy IX-I liked it better than VII or X
-In no particular order-
Star Ocean the Second Story
Resonance of Fate
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy IV
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment
SMT Persona 3 FES
Eternal Sonata
Valkyria Chronicles
Grandia I, II, and III
Kingdom Hearts II
Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII
The World Ends With You
The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky
Rune Factory Tides of Destiny
Dark Cloud 2
Demon’s Souls
Dark Souls
Every Final Fantasy game to come to NA (including spin-offs, excluding MMO)
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Threads of Fate
Secret of Mana
Star Ocean Blue Sphere
and Enchanted Arms (not the best my any means, but still enjoyable to play)
Out of all the WRPGs I have played, I like that the best.
-Star Ocean 4 The Last Hope International ( Underrated Game – This game is so much fun. I recommend this game, its brilliant even though the story needs a bit of work otherwise its a fun experience )
Right on!
Although I failed to list it, I thought for current gen RPGs, The Last Hope International was an awesome game.
I didn’t even care about the story most of the time because of the awesome gameplay. Battles were so fun.
I normally don’t do Colosseum fights in games, but I had to finish all of them because I loved battles so much.
As for FFXIII-2, I haven’t played it yet because of I have a whole slew of games I need to play, but I do hear it is pretty fun too.
-chrono cross – beautiful animation , awesome characters, excellent story. I personally actually take cross over trigger anyday
-of course ff4 through 10 – need i explain?
– infinite undiscovery – i loved the battle system and the need of teamwork in this game, battle system still isn’t as good as the simple turn based but was my most favorite out of most other rpg’s that did not have it.
– last but not least, The Last Remnant – i didn’t beat it yet but so far its pretty bad ass for only costing me 14.99, downfall is some of the boss battles can drag on for hours not because its hard but the battle speed is so slow.
1. Final Fantasy VII
Quest for Glory 4: Shadows of Darkness.
Final Fantasy 7.
Knights of the Old Republic 2.
Star Ocean: Til the End of Time.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3.
Fallout: New Vegas.
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.
Mass Effect (the first game only!)
Final Fantasy 8.
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.
These are all games that I consider to be the very best RPGs that I have played, the ones that meant the most to me and spoke to me on a personal level. There are a great many which I enjoyed, but can’t include for one reason or another – games such as KOTOR 1, FF8, FF12, Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Space, Dragon Age Origins etc etc. Great games, but they don’t quite have what it takes to make the main list.

Incomplete and all.
FF12 > FF8
xD
Grinds my gears that this happened to what was up until then, a strong contender for the best Final Fantasy game of the whole series (practically a lock, really). As for FF8, well each to their own. For my part, I found (and still do find) Squall’s escape from the Spidertron, the assassination attempt on Edea in Deling City and the Battle of the Gardens to be the most exciting, most adrenalin pounding moments in FF. The game crosses the line in the second half, when the story goes completely off the rails, but there’s still enough great moments that I forgive it (Ragnarok clawing its way into the Lunatic Pandora is awesome, and though it makes very little sense, the scene where the moon ‘bleeds’ monsters onto the planet is cool as hell). Plus, it still has the best end sequence of any FF game IMO (although being offered the chance to resurrect Tidus and being allowed to say Hell No! in FFX-2 was a priceless moment I shall treasure forever!)
Those kind of complains, IMO are what made it a more realistic experience to me. Nabudis was a place full with monsters after the explosion, there wasn’t any point in making it a plot device to resolve around it. But yeah, many things were a mess still. Like the Ba’Gamnan subplot and the Chop subquest, but seriously after the crystals at giza plains and the shouting at Bujherba, another stupid minigame wasn’t any issue, albeit to be expected.

Yeah, FF8 has strong FMV sequences, the best out of all the series possibly and the most unsettling ones (the time-compression sequence remains as my favourite of the game). And Disc 1 is really good. But it gets so, so, so ,so , so corny after that and the story doesn’t care to justify a bit of anything (Finding Elone for absolutely nothing for example), that makes it impossible for me to appreciate it as 7, 4 or 12. And the Cast of Characters were not really good IMO.
Plus, FF8 has the most broken gameplay in all the series. And this is very very very true.
FF12 still manages to pull off in terms of story and characters even though things get messy after meeting Gran Kiltias. And the FMV Sequences are on par with FF8 too, plus the scenery is gorgeous. The first time you reach the Ridorana Cataract is sublime.
What about suikoden 1,2 and 5?
and which is the best star ocean? vrykolas?
star ocean is the sky pirates right? Is it like a strategy rpg?
Star Ocean is like Star Trek in many ways. Its got a Federation for example, and they have a non-interference with alien worlds policy etc etc. Your main characters tend to belong to this, but you also have aliens, several of whom do qualify for the term ‘Sky Pirates’. Being a JRPG, it works in people using swords and supernatural monsters etc into the mix though, of course. They’re basically standard JRPGs, with much better combat systems than you usually get in such games (its all real time, free moving, swap between party members whenever you like etc etc). Because the stories aren’t confined to single worlds, they tend to be pretty epic in scope, and there’s always *tons* to do, in terms of side quests, dungeons etc. The post game content for Star Ocean 3+4 is particularly worthy of praise, with several big dungeons at much harder difficulty levels, some of which have extra story content as well.
For my money, Star Ocean 3 (also known as Til the End of Time) is by far the best one. Big sweeping story, proper build up with good payoff, loads of locations and variety, quite a lot of leeway in choosing who you have in your permanent party. Its a great game.
As for Tidus – I wouldn’t like him much anyway, but its his voice actor that really seals the deal on me disliking him. The guy bellows at the top of his voice, and its just grating. Between all the shouting and boasting and crying, Tidus is perhaps the greatest single reason why I never intend to play FF10 ever again.
Sorry if I should have posted this in a different thread. I see there are a few the same.
Close runner up would probably be Xenogears or Mass Effect 2.
Resonance of Fate is also worth a look.
But other than that, I love above all:
Might and Magic: Xeens,
Might and Magic VI – The Mandate of Heaven and
Might and Magic VII – For Blood and Honor.
I like Might and Magic VIII – The Day of the Destroyer, but it’s not as good as four previous games.
I also happen to love TES III: Morrowind.
Final Fantasy Tactics
Chrono Trigger
Breath of Fire 3
Rhapsody a musical adventure
Seiken Densetsu 3
I just love the music and the story in all these games♥
O_O
Isn’t comparing something as mediocre as FF7 to such a great game like CC, I don’t know…heresy or something?
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past – The first RPG I finished ๐ and I like how we get more items and tools to continue our adventure ๐
Final Fantasy 4 – From a Dark Knight to a Paladin, a nice storyline
Final Fantasy 7 – Nice story and Gameplay System
Isn’t comparing something as mediocre as FF7 to such a great game like CC, I don’t know…heresy or something?
It doesn’t seem like he’s comparing them. To me, they seem a little too different to be compared.

Monolith have produced two masterpieces which are both rich in diversity and represent how every RPG should be set up.
It is an SRPG by Neverland for the SNES and is sort of set in the world of Lufia.
It has amazing graphics and great music but is sort of rushed near the end. But still a truly great game.
I’d add Xenogears on there but, there was quite a lot of problems with it, despite how much I ended up enjoying it by the end. I actually didn’t mind the second disc but half the translation was awful :c
It’s hard to say what the best game is. It’s all so subjective and I’ve played Table Top games that were awesome, not for the system but the group of people playing the session. Of course I’ve also had Table-Top Fail a-plenty that only become funny with time and therapy.
More recent ones would probably be Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door and Persona 4.
This is what got me into rpgs and tabletop rpg.
Shin Megami Tensei 4
Pokemon X
and Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
Xenosaga Episode I (PS2)
Xenogears (PSX)
Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
Golden Sun & Golden Sun The Lost Age (GBA)
Final Fantasy X (PS2)
Shining Force (Genesis)
Elder Scrolls III and V (PC/multi-plat)
Paper Mario (N64)
Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door (NGC)
Every Disgaea game (PS2/3)
Nier (PS3)
Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (PS2) (This is the only RPG I’ve ever played through twice in the same month)
Riviera: The Promised Land (GBA)
Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny (PS3)
Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 1 and 2 (GBA)
Of all of these, I would have to pick Elder Scrolls Morrowind as my #1, simply because it was my escapism for so many more hours than any other game. Xenosaga, Golden Sun: The Lost Age, Pokemon Crystal and Xenogears follow, in that order.
So far Bravely Default is the best RPG I’ve played.
Sailor Moon Another Story
The Legend of Zelda Master Quest (GameCube)
must be…
FINAL FANTASY XIII-2!! I know, there are more haters than lovers, but for me, FFXIII-2 is Special. I don’t like XIII or LIGHTNING RETURNS, but -2 is brilliant!
That would be Zelda OoT. Perfection in all senses
It’s great! ๐
