I picked up Maximo Park – A Certain Trigger and The Caesars – Paper Tigers.

I’ve seen Maximo Park live, and I think they’re absolutely supurb. However, something puzzles me with the Caesars album: wtf happened to it ?_? See, I was listening to them this time last year, but there album was called "32 Minutes of Bliss in an Otherwise Meaningless Life" or something, and it had Jerk It Out on it.

Paper Tigers has Jerk It Out – but also a load of other songs too! So is this there second album, but they just left Jerk It Out on (?_?), or is this some kind of crazy re-release of the other album, with nearly all the songs changed?

I recently bought:

Pearl Jam – Ten. Now I had this album for ages on a copied disk, but I much prefer to have the proper album to add to my collection, plus its a fucking great record.

The Mars Volta – L’Via L’Viaquez Single. Obviously, most people here know I am a huge fan, so I have to buy everything of theirs, it comes with an average B Side called "The Bible and The Breathalyzer"

The Flaming Lips – Oh My Gawd!! I’ll admit, I dont think this album is as good as The Soft Bulletin or say Yoshimi, but its still very good, I think it has more of a punk-rock feel to it, and it shows how good a guitarist Wayne really is.

Recently I’ve bought;

Bj???rk – Homogenic. A brilliant album of all sorts electronic, even the most drum n’ bass track can appeal to an Indie fan.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven. This album defines ‘epic,’ but also has sounds of post-apocalyptica, and general ambience. A brilliant album.

Dinosaur Jr. – Bug. This a fantastic album, one any Indie fan should not be without any second of their life.

My Bloody Valentine – Isn’t Anything. Not as good as ‘Loveless,’ but is still definitley up with the best ‘shoegaze’ records ever.

Portishead – Dummy. A brilliant, moody album. It sounds so sexy as well! Another album any Indie fan shouldn’t be without.

Bonnie Pink – Heaven’s Kitchen - second half is pretty great.
bridge – Preppy Kicks – Shibuya-kei music. My collection will probably start having a lot more of that since the used CD store carries so much of it.
Shinohara Tomoe – Super Model – roommate wanted to hear it, plus I have a habit of buying her music for no good reason.
Spookie – Oh! Manhattan ——–\
Pop Chocolat – Nijiiro Falsetto—–> hasn’t arrived yet!
Puppypet - Kokoronichishiwo—–/

Just bought another three:

At the Drive In – Realtionship of Command. If you like the hardcore/punk sorta movement, this is definately for you because it combines the energy of both, as well as being hugely original.

Bob Dylan – Blonde on Blonde. Harmonica gets a bit annoying, but other than that, its calssic Dylan, fantastic songwriter, fantastic guitarist.

Flaming Lips – Hit to Death in the Future Head. An album that I’ve only recently found out about, which I’m pretty ashamed of, but I have pretty much all of their other stuff. Its a great album, with some truly genius songs.

Thankyou.

Agreeing.

I’d never take anything a magazine says seriously about best bands or anything like that. Also, anyone who is a true fan of music, doesnt have a favourite band imho. I like PF a lot, but I wouldn’t call them ‘best band ever’ or anything like that.

Why not? My favourite band is the Flaming Lips, without a doubt, and I don’t really see how having them, or any other band, as my favourite invalidates being a "true fan of music". But hey, I guess it is a difference of opinion though I don’t quite understand why you hold the opinion you do.

It would be more accurate to say that a people who like music a lot should know better than to declare a band as the best band in the world ever omg. It is perfectly fine to have a favorite band though. You just happen to like that band more than anyother, it’s just a matter of perference.

Maybe I should have clarified a little bit. There are 1000’s and 1000’s of bands out there. For me it is IMPOSSIBLE to pick a favourite, it just can’t be done, there is too much stuff I adore to pick just one favourite band. Unless you have only one type of music you like, I can’t see anyone else being terribly different.

Whilst I acknowledge what you are saying about a diverse mix of bands making it hard to pick one band from it all as being the best, I really don’t think it is impossible. I too have a pretty diverse listening diet, imho, comprising of indie, pop, rock, experimental stuff, punk, classical and even on occasion, pop and country. But despite that, I can still definitely say who my favourite band is, and yeah, there are maybe 5 or 10 bands that are of such considerable awesome that I might mistake them as my favourite band for a little while, but when I consider the subject properly it always comes back to the Flaming Lips ^_^

On the topic of having favourite bands, I personally find it a bit difficult.

Cos I will totally get into a certain band, album or even one song, and listen to it over and over for like, a couple of weeks.

But then I need a break and for a while I would not class that band as my favouritest band evar.

Also, I seem to judge favourite bands by live performances also. I would class bands that I have seen live as favourites, cos of the added knowledge that they also put on a great show. In this instance, Pearl Jam.

Indeed! Happiness is a Chemical is a fine song. The original acoustic version has its own charm too. And have you seen the video? Also marvellous.

I saw Sarah Blasko at a music festival here yesterday. Her set was definitely a highlight. *swoon*

I will have to check out the rest of her new album, as I’ve only heard the single, the name of which escapes me…but it’s growing on me!

Well, the thing is, it’s definetly different of what I expected, since now he has an actual band!

And it’s a top-record, nonetheless. I love his guitar-play, and the songs are just that good. Kinda vintage, but, there’s quite the serenity, to say it in such nice words. ^^

The Punk Rock Don’t Stop: A Tribute Album To The Apers- 18 Different artists <3

How much, if any of this is from before the self-titled? I hate that album and everything they’ve done since but love their prior material. I’m sort of interested by it but I have a feeling I’d end up hurling it against my wall, or putting it in the microwave or something.

The Apers’s The Apers was from 2001 so:

Numskull- Principal’s Daughter from The Apers/Retarded Split

Battledykes- I Hate Guys With Girlfriends from The Love Is A Battlefield And We Are The Stormtroopers EP

Accelerators- Wanna Go from Teenage Drama every Kid Will Understand

Sonic Dolls- I’ve Fallen from The Love Is A Battlefield And We Are The Stormtroopers EP

Popsters- Spend Your Weekends With Me from Retarded/Apers split

The Unlovables- Please Don’t Change from Buzz Electric (yeah i know it’s after The Apers, but it’s the best track of the comp so ;( )

The Mugwumps- You Think You’re So Damn Funny from For You and Your Loser Buddies Ep

7 out of 18, if you really want to hear it, i’ll upload it (.rar), but the other bands are pretty great: Copyrights, Ergs!, 20Belows, Sugus, Random Heroes, Leftovers, Ritalins, Manges & Supermarket, Steinways, Zatopeks, and Travoltas.

Did you find that there were actually hooks on this album? Not that it wasn’t an unbelievable album, but I was just find that there melody enough to actually hum along with.

aberfeldy – do whatever turns you on
boards of canada – music has the right to children

hello top-jack

whatever turns you on is a great album!

These are the last couple of months worth of purchases:

Yesterday’s Rising – When We Speak We Breathe
Kasabian – Empire
Inhale/Exhale – The Lost, The Sick, The Sacred
Boys Night Out – Make Yourself Sick
Loom – Plastic Meadows
My Morning Jacket – At Dawn
The Fray – How to Save A Life
Beck – Odelay
Beck – Sea Change
The Getaway Plan – Hold Conversation
Chiodos – All’s Well That Ends Well
The Shins – Oh, Inverted World
The Shins – Chutes Too Narrow
The Shins – Wincing The Night Away
The Strokes – Is This It?
Peter Bjorn & John – Writer’s Block
It Dies Today – The Caitiff Choir
Edan – Beauty & The Beat
Demetri Martin – These Are Jokes
Switchfoot – Oh! Gravity.

The highlights were Yesterday’s Rising, Inhale/Exhale and pretty much all three shins albums.

Indeed, it was, well, a bit shocking, since the contrast between the recorded versions and live versions is really high. But it doesn’t bother me, that much, fortunately. ^_^

or, you know, go against the indie hipster crowd and get Good News For People Who Love Bad News. it’s pretty ace (although apparently it’s the record on which they "sold out", because float on got pretty popular. go figure) but not really representative of the rest of their stuff.

Well, just so you know, I really dig the rythm and sound of songs alike Float On. So what if they so-called sold out with, doesn’t matter, and I try to look away from all the indie-labeling and such.

So, IF the rest of the songs on the album Good News For People Who Love Bad News is as good or even better than Float on, I think I might go for that one (or download a couple of songs first or something~).

i read the back of the new arcade fire, why did they redo a song from the EP?_? How is the Grinderman album? I’m a bit of a Nick Cave fan and I heard ‘No Pussy Blues’ and quite dug it. Does the rest of it hold up?

๐Ÿ˜€ Oh yes, it’s quite a terrific album, thing is, I’m a really big Nick Cave fan, and Grinderman is simply the edgier music Nick Cave has to offer! Some of the other songs remind me a bit of Iggy Pop’s rawness, which I find excellent. ^_^

Panda Bear – Person Pitch

Amazing album. Probably my favorite so far this year. I haven’t been able to stop listening to it. The layers of sound are so lush and real, and the vocal harmonies are magic. While the musical arrangements aren’t too complex, they shouldn’t be. They work to help move the vocals along, sometimes in shift from one mood/feeling to another — like on Good Girl/Carrots.

Not as good as The Last In Line or Holy Diver but a few songs on it are great. Not as good as Dream Evil neither. ROnnie James Dio’s voice and Vivian Campbell’s guitar work is brilliant along with Vinnie Appice’s thunderous drumming. Jimmy Bain’s Bass work seems to be plain on this album.

Donald Fagen – Kamakiriad

It’s a concept album which depicts the travels of the narrator, while he’s in his fictional, state-of-the-art car, Kamakiri.

I’ve read many reviews stating that it’s not Fagen’s best effort, most of which could be summed up in one word: okay; mediocrity was a given. However, the theme was interesting enough, and along with being a Steely Dan fan, the record eventually found its way into my collection.

Lately i have been walking through Vinyl LP stores, and i got a lot of them.

Here’s only one relation of some:

Simon and Garfunkel – Parsley, Sage, Rosemery and Thyme (1967)

The Mothers of Invention with Frank Zappa – Freak Out (1966)

The Mamas and The Papas – If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears (1966)

Buck Owens and His Buckaroos – I’ve Got A Tiger By The Tail (1965)

The Crickets w/Buddy Holly – The "Chirping" Crickets (1957)

An, with this album, i get 1000 in my collection! hehehe

MossY

Yes, I would recommend it very highly, but I am big into Interpol. As a whole it is very very good but the three stand out songs for me are the Heinrich Maneuver, Rest My Chemistry and Pioneer to the Falls, two of which are on their MySpace. If you liked Turn on the Bright Lights or Antics, I’d say buy it.

I’ve been getting that kind of entertainment out of video games for a while now. It’s natural to shift emphasis everyone once in a while, for me. I just haven’t heard anything new that excites me in a while. I’ll look harder when I’m ready.

I used to buy albums constantly, sorry if I didn’t make that clear. It just hasn’t been my top entertainment priority recently.

Mossymossy, I had no idea what Icky Thump was gonna be like, but: It is good! Generally, the sound of the album reminds me a lot of the album Elephant, which I really fancy (’cause I was a bit dissapointed with Get Behind Me Satan). But that dissapointment is vanished now with the fresh and edgy sound of their latest (and greatest? maybe~), and I really think you’re gonna like it too. ^^

I haven’t done a "lyric study" yet, but I listened to the whole thing on the way home yesterday. Sonically, it is pretty nice. Good change of pace from Futures, for sure (not that there is ANYTHING wrong with Futures.)

See, I was afraid that you were going to say that. It’s different in a very good way, but it isn’t so different that you’re going to find it foreign or aversive–at least I don’t think you will, it’s all in your interpretation, at the end of the day.

For me, Futures is a rather dark and cathartic record. If Futures is about the immediate end of a relationship, then Chase This Light is like a couple years down the road. It’s exactly the change I needed, given that that pretty much parallels my own experiences.

I think you should pick it up, if you want my outright opinion.

For me Chasing The Light brings older elemnts and some of the best songs since Clarity, i didn’t like Futures or Bleed American and only seem to enjoy Clarity which is a sonic trip and J.E.W’s best effort as well as the highest standard for the band, Chasing The light is a solid record but not the most ambitious or most impressive, it’s the most logical step in their career,

Also, Gotta Be Somebody’s Blues is one of the most catchy songs of the year

So I checked the songs out, and it seems to be a brilliant album. If I get a hold of some money I don’t need anytime soon, it’ll be the first thing I buy.

Not >5 years older than me

I’m even older now, seeing as that was 2 years ago ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

So I checked the songs out, and it seems to be a brilliant album. If I get a hold of some money I don’t need anytime soon, it’ll be the first thing I buy.

I’m glad that you liked what you heard, Sobye ๐Ÿ™‚

I have to say that In Defense of the Genre is so beautifully whacked out and sprawling that it may be my album of the year. I’m dead serious.

"My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" by David Byrne and Brian Eno. A pure classic. Absolutely stunning!.

And considering it was recorded back in 1981 it was very much ahead of its time.

The remixed recorded voice in "Mea Clupa" is really something.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uB-0D-gV8mY/SaylF6uOemI/AAAAAAAAT4I/4NkrMF7DaXA/s400/adam+and+the+ants

It features songs taken from the album "Dirk Wears White Sox" and was released to cash in on the Ants later fame by Do It Records when they were riding high after the release of "Kings of the Wild Frontier" on a different label, so it’s not a bootleg as such but not sanctioned by the band either. Noteable because the image on the front is taken from the Kings tour and yet the Ant line up and look of the album which the songs were taken from was different……. not that anyone cares

Not recent in clock time, but recent in my life time.

Frank Zappa – The Yellow Shark (Performed by the Ensemble Modern) As always, if you aren’t listening to Frank Zappa, you aren’t getting the most out of music. Sorry, but you aren’t.

Animal Collective – MPP This is what the Beach Boys would sound like if they were a drug addled indie group.

Mastodon – Crack the Skye This is the kind of music that could slay dinosaurs. Real ones.

Last two I bought were:
Gallows – Grey Britain (Soon as I heard their tracks on Myspace I went out and bought dis)
High Contrast – High Contrast Confidential (Always been a High Contrast fan so this was a no-brainer decision)

Before that I bought the first five Metallica albums.

Planning to get Mastodon’s latest one depending on how it sounds.
Blood Mountain was ok but I preferred Leviathan, so I’m hoping its better than Blood Mountain.

Nero’s Day at Disneyland – From Rotting Fantasylands

Directly from the man himself at his most recent show (which was amazing). Everything about his music is just unbelievable, from the songs themselves to the album art to the surreal poetry he included in the liner notes to the track titles. It was eight bucks up front, but since I only had a tenner on me I gave it to him and told him to keep the change. He was so thrilled about this, it was as if it made his whole day, but little did he know what impact it’d have on me, as this album made my whole fucking month.
