composing final fantasy music

now let me get one thing straight, nobuo uematsu is and always will be the best composer of all time and that is why i have made this thread.
i want to be a composer like nobuo uematsu and im sure there are many people who have the same dream.
i have composed music and i want to know who else has composed anything.

Uhh… Uematsu is somewhere between mediocre and crap; has been for years and probably will continue to be.

Anyway, I wrote a couple of arrangements back in my band days and could have put together some good original stuff, but I just don’t enjoy it enough to bother.

I wouldn`t say Uematsu was "the best composer of all time", although i certaintly wouldn`t say he`s "somewhere between mediocre and crap". He`s made some damn good tunes in his day.

Also, post some of your music if you want some advice or tips from other..uh, musical maniacs.

I am forced to agree with Prak. And no he is not a nasty fool, he was just being honest!

I think Uematsu lost steam after the FF7 soundtrack. It’s hard to produce so many songs and have them all be masterpieces I imagine.

I’ve composed some things but none of it is all that great. Nothing good enough to be "orchestral"

I’ll agree that Uematsu is one of the best video game music composers of the 80’s and 90’s. But to put him up against Beethoven, Bach, Wagner, Stravinksy, etc etc etc would be a bit of a stretch. My best suggestion as to how to get good at composing is study music theory.

i think its amazing that he can write in so many different styles…….how DARE ye comare him to classical composers, you….you…..FIEND

if you want to be able to wirte music you SHOULD learn a bit of theory and get noteworthy composer (trial version is free) and then work out how the music should sound naturally…..thats all folks

Guys, Nobuo Uematsu may be a great composer and can compose a wide variety of music( Advent Childrens’s tracks may often be different in styles but it’s still him) but he’s definitely not the best out there. More like ONE of the best. He is certainly well-known in the music industry but how about other less-known composers like Keiki Kobayashi(who composed for NAMCO games, Ace Combat V: The Unsung War is a great piece of work) and Masami Ueda(who composed most of the Resident Evil games), Takayuki Aihara(Soul Edge), Yoko Shimomura(Parasite Eve) or even western composers like Michael Giacchino(Medal of Honour: Underground), Michael Hoenig(Baldurs Gate 1 and 2), Jeremy Soule(Icewind Dale, Morrowind) and Richard Jacques(Headhunter/ Headhunter: Redemption)? They can be as good or better than Mr. Uematasu. Don’t get me wrong, i like Mr. Uematsu’s work a lot but sometimes his music can be a bit of a letdown.

Yoko Shimomura didn’t compose FFXI. Nor was Uematsu directly responsible for creating the different styles in Advent Children.

But different styles can still be heard from his Final Fantasy game soundtracks.

Well, Uematsu composed the tracks, yes, but the arrangers (Toyama, Hamaguchi, Sekito, Kawamori and Fukui) were directly responsible for the various styles and such.

As you can see, I did say that, so I clearly can. I am also available to say so again upon request. Layer it enough times and it will become a type of music. I’ll call it the symphony of harsh reality.

Since there’s no official FFVI Piano Collection, I was thinking of composing some arrangements, since I’m really enjoying the music so far….

Some that I’ve decided I’m going to do are the Opening theme (with the gigantic freaky-dramatic opening and the march afterwards, which is the World Map theme), Aria De Mezzo Carattere (The Opera scene, Celes’s Theme), and maybe Decisive Battle (Boss battle theme).

I can name Yoko Kanno. She has made so many different songs in so many different genres and they are all masterpieces. But that’s just my opinion. Yoko Kanno FTW!!!!!

I Love all of has music. But it seem Yoko trying to beat has music, With the kingdom Hearts 2 Music. But I will all way love has music. Is there alot of Music composer for Square and alot of Music I love from them.><

Uematsu is good, One-Winged Angel was his best then it went, kind of downhill from there.
On a side note: Yoko’s music is very good. He might beat Uematsu in KH3

And for me, the best composers are Yuki Kajiura and Yasunori Mitsuda… XD

If considered individually, some of Uematsu’s pieces sound repetitive, sure. So does the middle of a symphony. But, and this is my personal view, if you treat all of Final Fantasy as a Suite, or even just each separate game as a full piece with separate movements, I find that his work takes on a new light.

Suddenly the references to past movements are simply an implication of the overarcing theme of Final Fantasy, as opposed to repeating old work.

Indeed, as far back as Final Fantasy IV, it seems clear to me that Uematsu has been composing, consciously or not, one great piece meant to generate new memories, as well as bring back old ones.

But would FFX-2 count? That Soundtrack was completely composed by Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi.

I see what you mean though, I’ve thought of it that way as well.
It’s like the Tales of series.

And I can say this because Motoi makes an effort to change his style on different games like Infinite Undiscovery or Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga. But not the Tales of Series. Because the sound is already there, it would be wrong to change it, no matter how redundant, because it’s apart of a series.
Besides, no one makes people buy those soundtracks, and you can’t complain if you’re downloading it for free, that’s just hypocritical.

In the future, please check the dates in a thread before responding. We don’t have any hard rules in the Anime and Video Game Music discussion sub-forum about how old is too old, but obviously these people are all long gone.

I knew the thread was old, I just wanted to make the statement, so someone maybe could see it and not complain so much about listening to composers who work their ass off making money doing what they love.

Besides, you saw it, do you feel the same way?

Maybe people will start talking on here again. Probably not though, because I’ve done this before and no one replied. Maybe an asinine comment towards me, or two.

But I’m glad you were nice with replying though, a lot of people in the shrine are not very nice.

Especially in the "general discussion" section.
