read the topic. answer the q. if you were 10, and you saw voltron, but you dind’t know what "anime" is, that don’t count. the only thing i’ll excuse is if you knew it was "diffrent somehow" when you first saw it. i might go with that.
lets all be honest and not speak for other people. for me, it was
robotech/sailor moon/dbz. not in that order. that’s when i realized…hey…this ain’t nothing like johnny quest..hmmm. and then i got blow away and fell in love. ahh..memories. ๐

Taro the dragon boy probably. In 85 or 86 maybe. My cousin would bring stuff from japan/talked about the cartoons and stuff from out there so it was easy to tell what was japanese or not. I also got some Taiwanese comics (
http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hs=T3Y&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=%22blood+sword%22+jademan&btnG=Search)(similar to Hong Kong style) from a friend in second grade and they were awesome as well as the first ones I got on my own I think as I mostly rummaged through my brothers comic collection at the time and besides ordering Calvin & Hobbes from school I don’t think I put any effort into trying to buy comics.
Actually mostly my friend bought Calvin & Hobbes back then and I read his, occasionally getting one for myself.
I should mention that those comics were the only such comics that I had for years. A running theme in my young life was wanting certain things and having to wait years before I actually got them. I don’t know how normal that was, but I imagine my patience was pretty uncommon. I wanted to import games since my cousin brought some japanese games for the NES in the 80s, but I never got around to doing it until near the end of the 90s… so I mostly just stared at the import shop ads in the backs of magazines. I kept a gamepro or EGM mag from 93 for the entire decade because it had a 40 page import review special section nd I used it to plan most of my early import purchases/roms I looked for.
Also: In my days they called it japanimation… I think!

Project Ako was my first anime movie.
I guess I would have to say that my first anime was Sailor Moon? It’s kind of tricky, because I watched it for years before, and I got into anime after I started to get into the Sailor Moon manga. I might have started watching some other shows before I started watching it again. At any rate, the sailor moon manga is one of the big things that got me into anime!
Some of my earlier shows were Slayers, Fushigi Yugi, Ah! Megami Sama, and Nadesico. When I first started watching stuff, it was more "this is a show I have access too" then picking out show that looked good!
My first anime was Sailor Moon. It got me into anime, then I watched other animes such as Fushigi Yugi, DBZ, Voltes V and Macross.

inuyasha. i was up late over the summer and watching tv for no reason. i stumbled upon… inuyasha! second episode. this is the one and only anime that i enjoy. no idea why, the others just don’t float my boat. i can see why people like them though. except dbz, which obviously sucks balls. chocolate salty balls. i mean seriously, its as dumb as pokemon but somehow older people accept it.
so anyway, inuyasha.. and then i was wondering around in nice, france and i found an awesome anime+stuff shop (though the bottom floor, the book/manga/comic section, was about 90% hentai). i picked up the only inuyasha dvd i could afford and brought it back here where my computer is french (w. europe, more accurately) dvd region and it is so awesome. so i love inuyasha. a lot of people hate it, which i can understand too. but it is a good time for me, i’m a big fan of all the movies.

I’d seen loads as a kid cause my nana use to buy cheap cartoon videos and they were anime. There was one about a cave boy called KumKum who got into troubel alot. There was another one about a boy, girl and middle age man travelling around searching for somthing in an abandoned city. And there were red and blue giant robots patrolling the city, so want to see it again. I sadly cant remember the name.
But the one that got me fully on the anime track was Dominion Tank Police and its my favourite all time anime and manga. That was back in 1996 I think.

I actually never knew people distinguished anime as a seperate subject from cartoons. (i actually didn’t hear the word ‘anime’ until about 6 years ago) i guess growing up in an asian community, we all just called them cartoons (or ka-tong in cantonese, although mangas/’man-wa’ were kinda treated seperate from comics). but yeah… i think it must have been those old Master Q movies that started everything… no story really, but pretty funny stuff.

I’d say the first anime I used to see was the rubbish on Italian TV when I was young, which I was not interested in, as I didn’t understand Italian (I’m Maltese) and the animation style bored me.
However, that was because those were cheap, TV productions. I was introduced to GOOD anime, through the Disney presented Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘Spirited Away’ which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Film in 2002.
Recently I saw the also presented by Disney, Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ which I loved.
I was surprised at my really liking the film, since I’m familiar with American, especially Disney animation. There was huge contrast between that and anime.
What I don’t understand is the meaning of ‘manga’. What does it mean? What difference does it have from anime? How is the word pronounced?
KaMoDiAn
06-18-2006, 08:00 PM
manga in english is as you see it. in cantonese it’s pronounced as mann-wa (kind of a silent g i suppose, i think it’s the same in japonese). it can be interpretted as comic or graphic novel. if you like that disney labelled anime, i suggest ‘laputa castle in the sky’, that’s another oldie that has taken a long time to get recognition

they go episode, 290, 291, 292 or whatever number they are, and they show the very last one, and THEN, they restart again. what your saying that i’m trying to correct is that they restart SKIPPING THE ENDING. that’s the point i’m not agreeing with.

Macross, when I was at a big convention. There was a room that showed anime 24 hrs a day for 3 days. It was great. It wasn’t subbed and I didn’t understand the talking but I could still understand the story. After watching that I was hooked. That was over 15 years ago.

I think my first anime series was Samurai Pizza Cats waaaaaay back. I’ve liked "anime styled cartoons" for a long time, but didn’t actually know it was called anime until 2003. I think for a brief period I thought it was called manga because I bought Ninja Scroll, Akira and Ghost in the Shell on "Manga DVD".
I was also watching Card Captor Sakura on TV when I bought those DVDs and talked about it with a friend. I think it was then that I discovered it was called anime. And pretty soon I started leeching it. I think the first anime I’ve leeched was Naruto.
And look at me today. I’ve watched 250+ complete series and have no social life. A life well lived I’ll say.

Mine was Neon Genesis Evangelion. It was earlier this year at Tafe & I saw an AMV of it to Bohesiom Rhapsody by Queen (i think). I saw the bit where (if you don’t want spoiler of End of Evangelion start reading at end of paragraph) Auska gets stabbed through the eye with the lance of longines (you know what i mean lol). Then i saw what happened afterwards (her just slidding down the spear, gave me the creaps) & i just couldn’t get that image out of my head for days afterwards, so I ordered it in to ease my pain (the series not the movie, I’m not stupid enough the movie before the series)
Tho the fisrt anime I saw (don’t remember actually knowing what it was) was Astro Boy. Don’t like it now lol, but NGE is what got me obsessed.

The first anime I officially knew was anime was the Tenchi Muyo move, Tenchi Muyo in Love. You know, the one where they all time-travel to the seventies and such. It aired on the SciFi channel back in the day when SciFi was still of (dubious) quality, and it forever changed my worldview on animation. After that came Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Yotoden, Ronin Warriors… All classics, and all truly great. But Tenchi will always have a place in my bitter, withered heart. ^^

What an excellent topic! It’s had a consistent and long life, it seems.
Anyway, the anime that got me hooked was Yakitate!! Japan. Previous to Yakitate!! Japan, I couldn’t really get into anime for several reasons, one being that I had only ever heard about the ones that focus on grandiose fighting scenes. I’m really not into that type of anime, although I will put up with it if it’s good for the plot.

Some of the staff who worked on The Last Unicorn later went on to work for Studio Ghibli, so maybe that’s how the person who suggested that got confused, but it was made by American and British production companies and based on a (fantastic) novel by an American writer.

I watched Prince Planet in the mid 1970s, and then Speed Racer around 1978 or 1979. Both were in heavy syndication at the time in Chicago, but I had no clue that these were "anime", just that they were really, really good.
When they ported Gatchaman to make "Battle of the Planets" a year later, I knew the animation style was vastly different than US cartoons, and I could tell the dubbing was more blatant to my by-then more sophisticated mind, but I still had NO IDEA it was coming from Japan. It wasn’t until Voltron (1984?) that I began to get a clue.
At the time, though, I hadn’t heard the word "anime", but I had heard the word "Japanimation". Also I saw a news item about Japanese comic books which referred to them as "monga" (sic).

Miyazaki’s Panda! Go Panda! (it’s a lesser-known film by him, comprising two parts) on VHS, which I used to watch over and over as a toddler, along with Tonari no Totoro (aka My Neighbor Totoro) and Laputa: Castle in the Sky. Yep, I was wild for Miyazaki films. Still am, too, although Howl’s Moving Castle could have been better…
Pokemon introduced me to the world of Japanese animated TV, followed by Patlabor (which I simply adore). Now I’m hooked on Yakitate!! Japan (manga and anime).

@jeepjockey03-Project A-ko rocks ๐ . Although that wasn’t my very first anime, but I think that was about my fourth one. I liked it so much I did eventually buy a boxset of the series on DVD XD. I found it when I went to Comic-Con of 2005 and it was $30 for the three DVDs. I first heard about it when I found it at a Blockbuster video rental store.
In chronological order my first four animes were:
1.Sailor Moon
2.Iczer One
3.Mermaids Scar
4.Project A-ko

As far as I’m concerned, the original Transformers was the first anime related series i remember watching as a kid with the re-runs showing every morning when I was a wee lad in the mid 90’s. The anime that pretty much made me think, "Hey there’s this island country called Japan and they make good shows!" was probably Pokemon. I was born at the right time for the Pokemon world wide phenomenon. Amongst all that fandom, I took a liking to Neon Genesis Evangelion, only at the time I was 7 and didn’t understand Eva’s true nature. I only liked it cause it had big robots fighting evil alien things and had an awesome intro song that I love to this day. =D

The first anime I watched was the English version of DBZ in 1997/1998. And that was all I knew about anime; I knew about Sailor Moon but I thought it was too girly and I never cared about it.
But the show that opened the floodgates was "FUSHIGI YUUGI." I watched this show in Japanese and I had no idea what to expect. The storyline of Fushigi Yuugi was well done, the voice acting was superb (more so than ANY English voice acting that I have ever heard), the music was great, and it is one of the few shows that made me cry (I’m a guy).
If it wasn’t for this show I would not have watched other shows such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Rurouni Kenishin, and Blue Seed; I guess when you watch one great show of a genre it prompts interest in the whole.
In addition to watching other anime, what made this show so significant was that it generated an interest in the Japanese culture, music, and language.
I was 17 when I watched this show and I’m 27 now. I watch this show, or bits and pieces of it, every couple years and I still rank this show as the best anime.

Of course, animation has moved on quite a lot since then, but still I think it’s more about the storyline and character depth in an anime that’s important. Probably just me though.

I’ll divide this into two parts:
1st Part: Younger Days (early – mid 90’s)
I’d say animes like Voltes V, Daimos, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Ranma 1/2, BT’X, Samurai X, Slam Dunk, GateKeepers and Yu Yu Hakusho because these were frequently shown on TV back then and the stations have had plenty of reruns for these animes.
2nd Part: Reawakening of my interest in Anime (August 2007) after a hiatus from 2003 – 2007
Ginban Kaleidoscope: Reawakened my passion for watching anime (another thanks to my PS2 hehehe!). Changed my anime interests to watching animes with love stories and beautiful women (I only used to watch animes with fighting and robots).

hehe. I got into anime pretty recently considering my age. Around the summer before my senior year in high school I watched Naruto with a friend of mine. I had really never seen any true anime before then and I/We were watching it because I was bored and she was an anime addict. It really caught my attention and set itself apart from most of mainstream cartoons not shown on cable(yeah yeah). There was action, character developement, and more realism in the fight scenes. Wow, people actually bled when cut and the phrases like "I will KILL YOU!" haven’t been changed to destroy and whatnot. After that (since I was still using dial up at home) I wound up downloading anime at school and watching it on the provided laptop (new public school btw and first in the district to offer laptops to students so security was lax/nonexistent).

That sounds a lot like my experience. Just before my senior year of high school, I finally decided to see what these two friends of mine from a video game web site were chatting about (it was Yakitate!! The series that got me interested in anime were Robotech, Voltron, My Neighbor Totoro, and Ranma 1/2 (english dub), if my memory serves me correct.
My interest in anime peaked when I watched Macross Plus, Giant Robo, Sailormoon (*sigh* :-\ ), Tonde Buurin (aka Super Pig/Super Boink/Pig Girl of Love and Courage) or, Dragonball, and Dragonball Z (*sigh* :-\ ).
My experience is similiar to cj_siege_tank except that my hiatus from anime started around early 2002 and ended early 2007. I’m starting to watch old school anime (or anything pre-2000) and some newer stuff in order to reignite my passion for anime (mixed result so far).

though before gundam wing i would watch pokemon, yugioh, dbz, db, dbgt, lets&go, B’t X, Totoro, Panda Ko Panda, and many others…just never thought them as anime.
My neighbor Totoro might be the first anime ive ever watched…way back when i was 1 years old. My grandparents bought the VHS, 1st edition, for me to watch when it was released. Man that was a long time ago…

My friend introduced me to anime when he brought over his VHS copy of Street Fighter: The Animated Movie. I happened to be a fan of the video game series and that movie blew the live-action "adaptation" out the water. When my home first had the internet, anime was subject I would always look up. Now I appreciate animation in general.

When i was little, i already started watching anime, but that didn’t get me deep into watching more animes, thus at one moment i stopped. Until when i was 14(2004) i was introduced to Naruto, within weeks of watching it, i dwell deeper into other kinds of anime thus i started watching animes again up until now.

Death Note my first anime ever. And still best for me.
I watched DBZ and Sailor Moon but knew of them as regular cartoons. I also considered Pokemon (Digimon and Monster Rancher, too) and Cardcaptor Sakura as regular cartoons. I finally realized they were anime in 9th or 10th grade. I guess it took me awhile, but I never really hung out with anyone I knew that enjoyed anime. In 11th grade I had a friend who loved anime, but I honestly thought she was crazy. I saw a couple of animes during high school thanks to WB and cartoonnetwork, but I wasn’t exposed to much.

Everyone used the word japanimation when anime first started to become popular here. I can’t remember anyone ever saying anime until I was at least 15.
shade17 is just too young to remember those days. ๐
In the beginning, I just called it Japanese Animation, straight up. Then Japanimation, then Anime.
Anyway, I gotten my taste of it back in ’94. My first three were Project A-ko, Venus Wars, and

I’ve actually, like quite a few people, watched many anime without actually knowing what it was. For example, I watched Pok???mon and Inuyasha, along with a few others in my childhood. The first time that it really dawned on me that these so-called ‘cartoons’ were actually a subset of a much greater genre was when I watched Fullmetal Alchemist back in 2003; personally, I’d say it was pretty good way to be introduced into anime. : D

Humm… Here in Brasil, the first anime that i’ve watched was Speed Racer. Logically, in the end of the 70’s i don’t have any clues that is ‘Made in Japan’ or something….
But the ‘first’ anime (without pt-br translation) that i’ve watched was Hokuto no Ken. And the episode was the end of the battle between Yuuda and Rei. Was the first vcr tape from japan that my aunt gave me as present (the fact was she recorded many ads and commercials from tokyo to show me…… Very funny)
Samurai Pizza Cats for me and then when I was more aware of what anime was and not just a funny sounding word I guess my first real experience was Excel Saga.

i think da first anime i watched was akira or ghost in da shell iv also seen armitage 3 all of them an dbz tenchi muyo sailor moon and a few ovas started watchin them wen i was bout 5
I think the first anime I watched was Tenchi Muyo (wishes that they come on T.V again or at least release more of the DVDs in the UK) After it stopped being shown I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Yuyuhakusho, inuyasha, and cowboy beebop, Which Later Turned into Tenchi muyu, Trigun, and infi other Anime’s.
Robotech, Tenchi Muyo!, Wing Gundam, and the old Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!
Dragonball Z, Tenchi Muyo and Gundam Wing on Cartoon Network (and boy did they edit Tenchi with regards to (Ryoko’s) nudity and inuendo).
Pokemon and Tenchi Muyo,
Id seen DBZ, but didnt know it was anime, same for digimon.
Tenchi Muyo! I think was my first anime.
DBZ and Tenchi Muyo!
My first anime was Dragon ball z, I saw it on WB a Long time ago. I could just tell it wasn’t like any other cartoons just from the way everything looked.
Then my area got Cartoon Network and thats when i really started to see more anime. programs like Voltron, Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo, Dragon Ball Z, Gundam Wing, and Ronin Warriors.
I believe it was… Big O actually. I feel bad about that. I had seen anime before that( just the stuff that was on Toonami like Kenshin, Tenchi Muyo, Dbz, sailor moon, the horribly butchered Cardcaptors) but I really don’t feel like I saw it as anime, just cartoons. Now I know better though.
The first shows I saw but DIDN’T know were anime were Voltron (Lion Force), StarBlazers, Robotech, early ’80s anime. I didn’t actually get into anime until the early ’90s myself, with Sci-Fi Channel’s Saturday Anime, with Tenchi Muyo! In Love, Gall Force, Project A-Ko. The first anime-anything I remember purchasing was Devil Hunter Yohko Volume1 Special Edition in English. Then, I got into other anime titles, not exclusive to ADVFilms, but also from Pioneer/Geneon, Manga Entertainment, FUNimation.
My first animes (in which, I knew they were anime) were Sailor Moon, DBZ, Tenchi Muyo and Cowboy Bebop. DBZ is about the only one out of the list that I don’t enjoy as much anymore as the others.
First anime I watched was Pokemon. I was already familiar with the games, but my cousin introduced me to the awesome show. However, the first anime I watched and realized it was an anime was Tenchi Muyo.
I would have to say Tenchi Muyo.

My first one was Akira at age 7 or so, i knew it was /different/ from the other shows that were airing at the time.
At the time i was barely able to read, but i still liked the animation. That was in the 1990’s or so.
Many years later cable TV became available in my region, and with it cartoon network. Watched it mostly due to the novelty of it, and learned a good chunk of English at the same time.
Few more years passed, and animes finally made their way into TV programs. namely Sailor Moon. Suddenly cartoon network seemed like child’s play :0
And the rest is history.

That post lacked a cohesive point. Try again if you like, but try not to dig your hole deeper.
My point is that on an english-speaking board, few (or possibly none) of the people reading your posts are going to have any idea what you’re saying. Use your brain a bit, because you’re either being an idiot or you’re typing in a language no one is likely to understand because you think idiots will think you’re cool because of it, in which case you’re still an idiot, but made worse by being a pretentious one.

i assume all people know exactly what i know, plus a bit more. until i am proven wrong. i have found this is far better than to assume all people know less than i do, and in return treat them like children.
my previous experience with this board had shown me the people i was speak with and exchange soundtracks with were perfectly capable of read ‘and’ understand kana. it was my error to assume that other people in other parts of this board were ignorant of how to read and/or speak more than just english.
if you doubt what i am saying, please refer to some of my past posts:
|1 (Thread 70929)|2 (Thread 71553)|3 (Thread 71595)|4 (Thread 71636)|5 (Thread 71135)|6 (Thread 71717)|and especially 7 (Thread 71284)|
the only mistake i made was in assuming that previous experience with one area of this board would apply to all areas of the board.

either way, if you would prefer, i will assume all people out side of that section are too ignorant of kana to be able to communicate properly.
i often wonder what is the greater crime.
to assume people are smart enough to know.
or to assume they are too dumb to know.
or, to assume that because one does not, others do not either.
usually, only those who know not complain. should they not feel happy that one assumes they are not only smart enough to understand, but do.
and, i should note, grammatically, my answer original, before i did edit it for those unable to read proper kana, was all that would be needed to answer the original question proper.

apology. i have work very hard to be able to communicate in this language of english. what he did accuse me of was wrong. i do not show off how good i am with a fork, and i never did use one before i was 17 years old. i do not show off how good i am at driving on the western road side, even if it still does feel wrong. i do not show off how i can use feet and fahrenheit, even if meters and celsius is normal for me.
it is natural for me to use kana.

Well, back in the day during primary school, I used to watch Cheeze TV. It showed several anime, including Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Digimon, and Dragon Ball.
I didn’t really recognise them as anime until later on though, so I’d say Inuyasha was the first one I saw and recognised as anime. I’d just learned what it was and bought Inuyasha to give it a try. Then I rewatched my old nostalgic shows knowing what anime was.

I "grew up" watching Lupin tv series on TV, here in North America.
Yeah it was on tv back in the 70’s on cable.
Although we didn’t call it anime then, it wasn’t really anything different than other animated shows.
Battle of the Planets came along later, it was horrible.
But the first true anime show I watched, that introduced me to the whole mess was "Pop Chaser" of Cream Lemon series.
the very next show I watched was the Project A-Ko movie
Project A-Ko has to be the most insane of them all, and I believe holds the worlds record for most "cameos" by other characters.
that was something the japanese did that north american studios could never get away with,
they would always "cameo" or spoof characters even from other competing studios! That doesn’t really happen any more
I doubt anyone has ever come up with a definitive list of cameos (intentional or otherwise) in Project A-Ko
PS – very obscure reference which I’m sure no one else ever got – the "theme music" during A-Ko vs the Grey Side is the OLD theme from "Hockey Night in Canada" – have a listen sometime…

Voltron and Saber Rider on VHS. Later it was Candy, Candy on television; You know there is something different about these cartoons when you witness one of the main characters falling from a horse and breaking his neck. Now thats hq cartoon fun. Anyhow, later it was Sailor moon, the original DB ( one of the best ever ) and then the internet came and you pretty much know the rest.

I think my first anime was the Ghost in the Shell movie. After hearing about different animes while poking around different Final Fantasy and kingdom hearts fansites, I decided to check our vast collection of dvds for anime. I found that, popped it in, was confused and slightly freaked out by the halfnakedness and goryness. Then as the movie went on i didn’t mind as much. That or it was the last six episodes of Cowboy Bebop found while poking around. Now, I am fully using on demand for anime viewing purposes and am getting recommendations from a friend about what anime to watch online.

The anime that dragged me into the crazy otaku life of anime marathons started with FLCL. It was the first japanese animation I saw in Japanese with English sub titles. Obviously there has been anime like pokemon, sailor moon, cardcaptors, yugioh, dbz etc. but the first real introduction into the Japanese culture started with FLCL. Transitioned into Naruto when it first came out as an anime in Japan, and then shows like Tehchi Muyo, Love Hina, Trigun etc.

The first anime series I watched by myself was Pokemon, I belive I was around 7 years old. I also watched Totoro when I was younger, but didn’t know it was japanese back then (I belive I was 4-5 years old).
When I was even younger my sister and I used to watch Saint Seiya, but I was so young I can barely remember those times, Sailor Moon was fading in popularity here as Saint Seiya grew on popularity here in my country.
Back then I didn’t know they were japanese, they were cartoons like any other for me.
That changed when Fox Kids begun airing the "anime invasion" here in 2001, I was 11 and that lasted until I was around 14. I watched Digimon, Medabots, Shaman King, Beyblade, Patlabor, and a few others. On cartoon network I still watched Pokemon, and also watched Sakura Cardcaptors, InuYasha and Dragonball Z.
(Most of them I still watch and still looooooove xD)
By the obvious japanese-style commercials you could tell they were japanese, so that’s when I begun to notice how different they were from traditional cartoons.
Gosh I had a childhood filled with anime, boy was I happy. xD

Growing up in Italy in the Eighties was almost like living in Japan: we had a "golden age" of japanese animation that started in the late seventies and private TV channels started licensing anime series like crazy… Basically every single anime that came out in Japan, even the most obscure ones, was quickly imported and dubbed in italian (even bizarre stuff like The Kabocha Wine or Muteking). That’s why I can say I was lucky enough to grow up watching all the classics, and I can’t name just ONE anime, but I’ll name a few: Uruseiyatsura, Dash Kappei, Maison Ikkoku, Dr. Slump and Arale, Versailles no Bara, Candy Candy, Lupin the Third, Creamy Mami, Hokuto no Ken (can you imagine it? They aired Hokuto no Ken for kids, every afternoon and fully uncut). Of course I love series like Ranma 1/2 or Cowboy Bebop, but that’s "recent" stuff for me.

I watched Voltron when I was a toddler but I think watching Sailor Moon as a preteen was the first time I was really aware that it was a Japanese production (back then we called it Japanimation instead of anime lol). Ronin Warriors and Samurai Pizza Cats were also among my first. ah, to be a kid watching Fox in the afternoon in the 90s

Hm. I believe it was Ronin Warriors, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Shaman King, Neon Genesis and Pok???mon that got me interested way back in the day. Haven’t kept up with anime much these days, other than One Piece, which I was very skeptical of initially.

DBZ was my first; it felt unique in comparison to the other shows I watched due to the continuous story (every episode being a follow up to the previous). I only watched Cartoon Network shows at the time so it was a nice change of pace.

Rurouni Kenshin was the first anime I watched, which was forced upon me by my college roommate. Initially I rolled my eyes at the action…then I tolerated it…then after a few more episodes I became a full blown fan. The addiction’s just been getting worse since.

It was a very gradual transition, first seeing them as all cartoon then slowly seeing them as cartoons with Japanese openings (bcos I dont live in US and within the horrific reach of 4Kids opening dubs) then finally recognising them as anime.
I’ve watched anime since I was a kid with Doraemon, Dash Yonkuro and the staple Digimon and Pokemon but I’m not really sure which made me realise it was anime.
I guess it’s Samurai 7 and Witch Hunter Robin. The first 2 series that I watched in Jap dub.

Well, my passion for anime started with "Sailor Moon". ๐
Followed by "Dragon Ball", "Cat’s Eye", "Cardcaptor Sakura", "Cutie Honey Flash", etc.
Since then, however, I’m very skeptical and picky about new ones… :p

Half of my childhood were spen in Japan, so for me everything was anime because the other childrens called it anime also, be it the Cindarella or even the Garfield which was extremely popular there that time. But the first purely Japanese title I have seen was the Mitsume ga Tooru and Tetsuwan Atom.
I cannot remember but it was either Sailor Moon and/or Dragon Ball Z!

Robotech 2: The Sentinels played on TV when I was around 10 or so (around 1990). It was unlike anything I had ever seen and blew me away. The music, the art, the seriousness of a "cartoon". I didn’t know what anime was at that point…remember this is around 1990, but I knew there was something different about this. I happen to have recorded (VCR) the broadcast and I played it so many times after that.
I know that movie in particular gets a lot of grief from the community, but it changed my life.
When Carl Macek died, I was fortunate enough to come across the estate sale. They had a laserdisc of Sentinels and since everyone hates it I got it for a reasonable price. It came with a certificate signed by Carl’s wife.
