i want to formulate a list cos smokey thinks that there were no hard ones AT ALL (even the notoriously hard ones) and i want more people to tell him hes wrong~
says the guy that doesnt have the konami code right!
also: Legendary Wings.
Ninja Gaiden and Gauntlet were hard games, Gauntlet moreso because of the "you lose 1HP per second" feature.
qft.
even something like super mario bros. / super mario bros. 3 is INCREDIBLY difficult compared to the more recent mario platformer games.
I’m not the one who told me this was the code. Even so, that statement has no relevance to if I think NES games are hard or not. kthxbye
also, if you actually try playing any game on the original nes its going to be hard since we don’t have the advantages of roms and saving absolutely anywhere and pressing f4 and f6 over and over.
bubble bobble was hella hard trying to get to lvl 100. me and my friend did it only once and we couldn’t fucking beat the boss. what sux is these games always made you start from the very begining if you lost. lol that’s just hard. >.<
F Zero GX, Metal Arms, Wave Race, Devil May Cry 3, Ikaruga, Ninja Gaiden, Moto GP, Commando’s 2
some of those are downright sick in their level of difficulty
even something like super mario bros. / super mario bros. 3 is INCREDIBLY difficult compared to the more recent mario platformer games.
bullshit
easiest one of’m all is still Yoshi’s Island
and if you try and complete NSMB, its on par with SMW
offcourse you can ignore that and just try and rush the game as fast as possible but thats not finishing a Mario game
and pretty much all Mario platformers have always been very well balanced with some very difficult parts

The only really hard guy in Punch Out is Tyson, and it doesn’t take too long to memorize his pattern. Why, even now I know he starts the match with 3 knock-out uppercuts thrown once every six seconds. It’s not a hard game. Well, not hard for anyone except stupid children like yourself who are stupid and suck at games.
I’m not the one who told me this was the code.
You didn’t have the code memorized from the countless times you used it during your childhood? Why… I bet you never used it ever. I bet you’re an old school faker.
F Zero GX, Metal Arms, Wave Race, Devil May Cry 3, Ikaruga, Ninja Gaiden, Moto GP, Commando’s 2
some of those are downright sick in their level of difficulty
I don’t agree with any of these. F Zero GX might be the toughest one, but that is about it. In the NES era, I don’t think I ever played a game that allowed you to save as often as Ninja Gaiden does, and Devil May Cry 3 is only mildly challenging. I don’t know where you came up with Wave Race or Moto GP, but the last time I played them they were both easy. Ikaruga is a good old-school type shmup, but it still fails in comparison with Gradius – even its latter game, Gradius III, didn’t have a save feature, meaning you had to start from the beginning after dying only 6 times. I’ve never played Metal Arms or Commandos 2 but I don’t think they could be as hard as Battletoads.

You mentioned SNES games, not NES ones.
Seriously. Fuck level 3.
Along those lines, if you’re only able to beat a game because it lets you continue a dozen times, you can’t really call it easy.
Seriously. Fuck level 3.
Also: Robocop. That fucking game was hard as shit. If anybody here beat that, I don’t believe you.
Ninja Gaiden was pretty hard. Not like Robocop hard or anything but it was difficult. I never quite finished it, though I managed to get really far. I probably would have completed it eventually if my mom had let me spend a longer time playing it. =(
Also, the first TMNT game. I could never figure out how to get past a certain point, but not sure if this is the game being really hard or just me never figuring it out. Game kind of sucked anyway though, the second and third ones were way better.
I think that was just about everyone. I never made it past the third level, only because I never had any idea of what I was supposed to do on the third level. But man, swimming for bombs, right?
either your referring to the original Wave Race or you havent played Wave Race Blue Storm(i know i know, i forgot to mention Blue Storm aswell)
Moto GP 3 is hard
its no F zero but its definitly allot harder then pretty much every other racegame out there
Metal Arms is pure fucking horror on Nuts of Steel
i got thru like 1/4 of it and my last mission i completed took me about 3 hours of playing tango with Titans
and dont give me shit about savegames
nowadays most good games include all the difficulty settings for anyone who wants a challenge
hell even Halo 2 gets fucking hard if you try to finish it on Legendary(wich is pretty much impossible on your own)
You mentioned SNES games, not NES ones.
i just wanted to point out that NSMB is on par with pretty much all Mario platformers in terms of difficulty and that the easiest one is Yoshi’s Island
Oh man, I had forgotten the swimming part until you mentioned it just now. I may never have gotten past the third level, but I sure as hell mastered that bomb swimming!
lol. man. i coudln’t even get past like the 4th or 5th guy. lol but that was long ago. who knows if i’d be able to pass it now.
i haven’t played it in years. like… 20 years maybe. since i’m so old and not a kid anymore. lol
Me too. <3~
Also: Ghost N’ Goblins. *cries*
the farthest i myself could ever get before getting bored and quitting was like in the buildings. i coudl never get farther on my own. my uncle did though, one time he played and got to like part 4 or 5 on that ltitle map.
I’ve played them both, and neither one of them is difficult.
Moto GP 3 is hard
its no F zero but its definitly allot harder then pretty much every other racegame out there
Moto GP 3 isn’t hard either, and F-Zero GX is only challenging on the final few levels.
and dont give me shit about savegames
So how does being able to save your progress not come into factor when deciding difficult games? When you died in all the NES games, you had to start over from the very beginning. Say you were at level 99 in some game, then you lost, you would have to restart from level 1. Being able to restart exactly where you lost from is utterly easy; would you rather get to the final boss in Ghosts n’ Goblins and lose, only to restart the entire game without knowing its weakness or attack pattern, or would you rather have a virtually unlimited amount of retries on the same level, cutting gameplay down exponentially?
nowadays most good games include all the difficulty settings for anyone who wants a challenge
Lol. Back then, every difficulty level was hard. Offering an easy route through a game doesn’t validate it as being equally difficult. I don’t remember ever setting the difficulty to Easy and blazing through Double Dragons like I can with DMC3.
i just wanted to point out that NSMB is on par with pretty much all Mario platformers in terms of difficulty and that the easiest one is Yoshi’s Island
Not really. You listed some easy games, and didn’t really say anything about the original SMB or SMB3. At the end of SMB, some of the jumps were near impossible without perfect timing, and you had to be skilled on SMB3 to make it past the Dark World levels, especially if you lacked items. I’ve played NSMB, and it’s easy compared to the older NES games.
Also, I have gotten a fair chunk through it because I was really bored with a friend and we traded off, taking like a billion tries per level.
The game I mentioned in my first post comes with a special controller that has a mic in it, and at one point in the game you have to sing into it for 1 hour straight. And it judges you. And if it doesn’t like your singing you need to do it again. Also you have to hit the final boss 20000 times to win.
As an aside, any Atari game with porn in it usually has what would today be considered ‘extreme’ difficulty (of course, to get the porn ^_^).

lol. i have one of those. sailor moon based. and its a friaging hard game only because i don’t freaking understand how to play it. it involves the same "domino" pieces used for mahjong and that stuff. i swear. i can never get all the nice hentai scences in that game. >.<
oh okay you win
and i forgot aobut blaster master. i got the rom recently jsut for kicks. i coudln’t even get past the first fking lvl. i remember back when i was a kid, i got pretty far. :p
looks like my skills are deteriorating.
it still makes me scared at night.
i cant get anywhere in it. at all. to this day.
What the?
I am playing Contra/Gryzor (NES) at the moment. One of the best bunch of games of all time for me. ๐
Oh, and the Probotector version too.
Most Megaman games I’ve played have had hair pulling moments.
I remember the G.I. Joe NES game being crazy hard, but consider that when I was a wee lad I couldn’t beat…anything, so it probably wasn’t that bad. Still, I couldn’t get past level one.
That reminds me. The very first time I ever played that game, I came across one of those yellow hardhat guys on the first stage. It was covering its face or whatever it does for defense and so no matter how many times I shot at it, it wouldn’t die. Rather than try to figure out why or I decided that the game was broken and stopped playing.
And I’ve never played it since then.
And I’ve never played it since then.
Hilarious. Reminds me of my Crunch Berry situation. I once dreamt I was eating Crunch Berries that tasted incredibly rotten and horrifying. This was not real. Regardless, I’ve refused to eat them since.
It’s not the same. But it is.
Oh.
GAMESSSSS.
I put in Final Fantasy 10 and have never started it again after I got mad that the intro movieS would never stop coming and turned it off.
up up down down left right left right b a select start is the correct 2 player code.
not nes, but Contra III is really hard.
Smokey’s says right left right left.
Also: Robocop. That fucking game was hard as shit. If anybody here beat that, I don’t believe you.
qft
up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, A, B, Start?
theres no select, its definately L first then R, and i THINK, its ab, and not ba. i could be wrong the ab/ba. but i know its left first then right.
I skimmed my way through this and one has mentioned Castlevania, yet. I would like to see the average person "one life" Castlevania, let alone just make it through the whole game. (I.E. Getting to Dracula and killing him.)
Castlevania 2, while not truly hard, it can get confusing with the in-game given hints of what to do/where to go… So, one might not be able to beat it, if they can’t understand what to do. (:/
Also, Castlevania 3, while it may not be very hard if one takes along an a friend (E.I. Grant, Alucard, or Sypha). But, it’s quite tough to try to one life the game with Trevor Belmont all alone…
up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, A, B, Start?

select start is the two player code
i now its not for the nes, but i still cant beat megaman X. cant find all that acuresed armor.
I remember that one… the first stage was in a jungle and it annoyed me something chronic.
Still, there was The Hunt for Red October which was annoying. Next to no health powerups in any stage, and your armour only lasted for about two hits!
Wizards & Warriors III The Face of Kuros… now THIS is another ANNOYING game. You only have THREE lives to last you through the entire game! WITH NO CONTINUES!!! Thing is… I love the Wizards & Warriors games for the NES (sigh).
Oh hell, Google search ruins it for me. http://www.thealmightyguru.com/Reviews/SectionZ/index.html
3rd level in Battletoads….not hard. Volkmires Inferno level was harder than that.
TMNT has its pain in the ass moments.
Any Ghost’s N’ Goblins related game is irritating.
Castlequest….Don’t get me started!
Metroid – Definately took me a few years to beat. Started when I was 7 and beat it when I was 12 or 13.
not only is it long, is hard as hell!
for 5 years i have owned it, and still cant beat it! (of course, dont play it daily)
Castlevania: because the enemies dealt way too much damage and Simon was clumsy.
Wizards & Warriors 2: because you had to battle enemies with a toothpick.
Metroid: because Samus was just as clumsy as Simon and there wasn’t a map to figure out where to go.
Bart vs The Space Mutants: No comments.
