Icons of Anime Rumble

I’m sure most everyone already knows the rules of a rumble, but it’s obligatory. If you don’t like it for some reason, blame anyone who didn’t know it already and lynch them.

Remember that Spoilers will be frequent, unmarked, and largely unavoidable.

A rumble is essentially a popularity contest wherein two contenders at a time are presented and voted upon by the community. The winner of each match proceeds to the next round, which continues until there’s only one left standing.

At regular intervals (every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), a new match-up will be posted. There is no particular time set aside for these updates to be made. It’s entirely at the mercy of my availability.

In this particular rumble, there will be two categories running concurrently: male characters and female characters. As such, there will be two new matches posted with each update. In each match, you may vote for one character in each category. You are not obligated to vote in both. If you cast a vote for a character that is not in the current match, you are subject to having your vote discounted, as well as an undetermined degree of mockery. Votes should be bolded and should not be in any color other than the forum default. While the former is not strictly enforced, any votes that are made in other colors will be discounted.

If a vote is obviously based on a person’s liking of a series and not on the character’s own merits, it may not be counted, depending on circumstance. Votes from first-time forum posters will not be accepted except in cases where they immediately become active in the commmunity. All such cases are subject to review. That basically means I reserve the right to refuse the votes of such people if I don’t like what they’re voting for!

That last sentence was a joke.

I will refrain from posting votes of my own during the first round in order to use them as tiebreakers should the need arise. In subsequent rounds, a different method of breaking ties will be used.

If a show’s title has been translated for overseas release or if it is better known under a translated title (ex. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya), I will use the translated version. In the event a series is radically renamed for overseas release, I will list both titles.

The list as posted below is FINAL. There have been ample opportunities to propose changes to it, so if something you like isn’t represented, TOO BAD. If you weren’t around at the beginning of the rumble, ALSO TOO BAD.

There is a loophole to that, however. At some point, I will hold a special "wild card" round, where regular voters will get the chance to nominate a character of their choice for either the male or female category, but not both. Each of those characters will be placed in a regular match as a third option.

Lum (Urusei Yatsura) – An alien princess who came to invade earth, but was defeated in her challenge by the lecherous Ataru Moroboshi. Immediately afterward, she misinterpreted something Ataru said as a marriage proposal and imposed herself upon him. Prone to frequent mood swings, which tend to be catastrophically dangerous due to her electric powers and ability to fly.

Fuu Kasumi (Samurai Champloo) – A 15 year old girl from a samurai family, raised in poverty, who rescues Mugen and Jin from execution and acpresses them into a quest to find the "samurai who smells of sunflowers."

Misuzu Kamio (Air) – GAO! GAO! A cute, cheerful, clumsy, dinosaur loving girl who just happens to be the reincarnation of a cursed being whose soul is far too strong for a human body to support. As such, she’s doomed to die young, as is anyone who cares for her. Her condition also causes her to cry uncontrollably whenever she thinks she’s made a friend, making her a total outcast at school.

Kaname Chidori (Full Metal Panic) – As one of the Whispered, she possesses knowledge of "Black Technology," making her a target of numerous terrorists and rogue governments. Her forceful personality and short temper make her more than a match for her military-assigned bodyguard, Sosuke.

This one will probably be a bit more interesting than the last, I think. Ndi, feel free to add or amend anything I missed or got wrong about Misuzu since you’ve seen the series and I haven’t.

Justy Ueki Tylor (Irresponsible Captain Tylor) – Tylor figured joining the military was the perfect way to guarantee an easy life. Free food and housing, job security, and no major comflicts to get caught up in; how could he go wrong? Too bad a war broke out just after he signed up. After saving a retired admiral and his daughters from a terrorist attack, he was promoted to Captain of the destroyer Soyokaze, a broken down wreck of a ship used a dumping ground for the most undesirable people in the fleet. Captain Tylor tends to be easygoing, lets his crew do whatever they want, and prefers to run from combat. It’s unclear whether he’s actually a tactical genius or simply the luckiest idiot alive (all clues lean toward this one), but his actions eventually turn the tide of the war.

Eureka (Eureka 7) – Although she was created by an alien entity to interact with humans, communicate with them, and learn to understand them, Eureka was created as a blank slate, having no memory of her origins. Together with a young man named Renton—whom she soon falls in love with—she pilots a powerful mecha called Nirvash as a member of the pirate group Gekko State. She also serves as a surrogate mother to three children whose families she killed while serving in a military special forces unit.

Chihiro Ogino (Spirited Away) – Chihiro is a petulant, spoiled, and whiny 10 year old who’s not at all enthused about moving to a new town. On the way, her parents make a side trip to explore what they believe to be an abandoned theme park, but is actually a bath house for Shinto spirits. After her parents are turned into pigs by the witch who runs the place, she goes to work at the bathhouse in order to find a way to save them.

I’ve learned my lesson. I’m not even going to try to predict which way this is going to go. Still, it breaks my heart to know that one of those two excellent male characters is about to get the boot.

Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist) – A gifted young alchemist, Edward botched a transmutation that was intended to return his dead mother to life. That mistake literally cost him an arm and a leg. Now equipped with auto-mail prosthetics, he wanders the countryside with his younger brother in search of the legendary Philosopher’s Stone, which would give them the power to restore their bodies to normal. Has a massive complex about his low stature.

Fuma Mono (X) – As children, Fuma and Kamui (the series’ protagonist) were close friends. However, after learning that he is Kamui’s "twin star," Fuma joins the Dragons of Earth to oppose him and his once-gentle nature turns violent and cruel. He has a penchant for granting the wishes of others in ways that lead to tragedy. Possibly one of the most well-developed antagonists in anime history.

Females:

Minnie May Hopkins (Gunsmith Cats) – May is a 17 year old (this was changed to 18 for the English version) explosives expert and former prostitute who now works at a gun shop owned by her bounty hunting partner, Rally. She appears to be about 12, however, because she had taken drugs to stunt her growth in order to appeal to the pedophilic tastes of her older boyfriend, Ken.

Yohko Mano (Devil Hunter Yohko) – The 108th Devil hunter of the Mano line, 16 year old Yohko is obsessed with boys and driven largely by her hormones. Of course, killing demons intent on destroying the world doesn’t leave nearly as much time for getting laid as she would hope.

The male battle this time looks to be particularly fierce. I can tell that the battle lines will probably be drawn along lines of those who only watch anime on tv and those who seek out quality anime in other formats. However, considering the turnout during the Roy Mustang battle, I have very little hope for Fuma getting a fair chance.

As for the females, there are a lot of parallels between the characters, but neither series has a great deal of exposure among newer anime fans, so that one will probably be determined largely by what people think of the descriptions.

While it’s not shocking, I am a bit sad to see Fuma lose, being the more well-written character of the two. It would be nice if people would try to be a bit more informed about what they’re voting on. Just be careful, people. Keiichi Morisato (Ah! My Goddess) – In short, Keiichi is about the unluckiest person alive. However, in deference to his indomitable spirit and unyielding kindness, the goddess Belldandy arrives to grant him a single wish. Does he wish for wealth? Power? Fame? Nope. He wishes for her to be with him forever. Isn’t love silly?

VS

Van (Gun X Sword) – A somewhat silly guy in a black coat, seeking a man with a clawed hand (who killed his wife) to take revenge on him. His character seems to be modeled extremely (conspicuously even) heavily after Vash the Stampede.

Females:

Momiji Fujimiya (Blue Seed) – A perfectly typical teenage girl except for the fact that she’s a descendant of the Kushinada line, whose blood bears the power to seal the Aragami, evil creatures intent on menacing Japan. Of course, in order to do that, she has to be used as a human sacrifice. During an Aragami attack, she is nearly killed by the creature, which implants a seed (called a mitama) containing its own soul in her to keep her from dying and sealing its kind. The mitama allows her to sense the presence of nearby Aragami.

VS

Riza Hawkeye (Fullmetal Alchemist) – A soldier serving under the command of Roy Mustang, as well as his right-hand woman. She’s always calm and collected in dangerous situations and is an excellent marksman. Basically a very stock character who is woefully underdeveloped considering the amount of screen time she got over the course of the series.

These FMA characters are coming up a bit too frequently for my liking at this point. But it is random, so I don’t really have any room to complain.

Female: Now this one was a harder decision, and is the sort of machup you expect to find in later rounds(In fact, I’m sure that Riza Hawkey and Momiji Fujimiya would have likely come face to face eventually either way because they are both the sort of character that wins matches in rumbles.), but they had to face off this soon. It would appear that Riza has Momiji beaten hands down, but those are only superficial appearances. Momiji has the appearance of a sterotyped character, but she has a great deal of depth to her, as she both discovers new things about herself and evolves as the story goes on. Then again, Riza Hawkey is a hot chick with a gun. If Riza Hawkey and Momiji Fujimiya had a face off, Riza would put a bullet between the eye’s of Momiji and the Arigami would all be banished back to the other side, win win situation. lol. Okay I guess I shouldn’t go on with this inane drivel.

Riza Hawkey is just too much Pwnzing… and she’s of legal age too. Riza it is.

Shin Kazama (Area 88) – All Shin Kazama ever really wanted was to fly airliners and marry his girlfriend, Ryoko, but his dreams came crashing down around when his best friend tricked him into enlisting in the military of a war-torn country. Bound by a three-year contract he can’t break without paying $1.5 million (or being hunted down and killed), he battles daily in the skies over Asran. Though constantly plagued by a sense of self-loathing, he continues to bloody his hands for the hope of one day returning home to Ryoko.

Kyo Sohma (Fruits Basket) – Among the Sohma family, Kyo is something of an outsider. While the other 12 are possessed by the animal spirits of the Zodiac, Kyo is the cat, an animal that legend tells would have been included in the Zodiac if the rat had not tricked it into missing the induction feast. Under the terms of a bet, he can gain acceptance if he defeats Yuki Sohma (the rat) in combat before the end of high school. Unfortunately, he’s never even been able to land a decent blow. Although he’s in love with Tohru, he refuses her advances because he’s afraid of hurting her.

Millienium "Millie" Feria Nocturne (Lost Universe) – A young woman who’s determined to be the best in the universe at … something. After all, that’s the only way she’ll ever be able to become famous and write a best-selling autobiography, right? In addition to being a crack shot, she’s also an amazing cook. Too bad she can’t produce a meal without completely destroying the kitchen.

Sakaki (Azumanga Daioh) – Despite being tall and athletic with a large chest, Sakaki is quiet and shy. Because of this (and in spite of it), she presents an image of being cool and mysterious. Loves cute things; cats in particular, even though they never fail to scratch or bite her.

The females this time are considerably weaker, but the males have two fairly strong contenders. However, where both are powerfully written, Kazama is a far more mature character. Add in his role as an ace pilot and that might be a bit too much for Kyo. On the other hand, Fruits Basket does have more exposure in North America, so that might balance it out.

i saw like the last 3 episodes of azumanga daioh, and though it was so farking hilarious, i immediately baught the entire boxset from adv so i can see the early episodes i missed. and i don’t regret it even for a second. awesome show. i love all the chars! i love Sakaki! I love chiyo-chan, and i love Osaka the most!! OSAKA!!! lol. she’s my favorite. :p

Just for the record, these draws are entirely random. I am not intentionally putting all these FMA characters at the front.

It looks like both of these pairings could be pretty competetive. In both cases, I think there’s a choice that’s clearly superior. However, the alternatives have greater exposure, so there’s no telling which way it will go.

So Lain squeaks by Winry in an extremely tight round, but the real highlight is Naruto’s *crushing* defeat. I guess I had overestimated his popularity a wee bit.

Piccolo (Dragon Ball) – A green-skinned alien created when Kami’s evil nature was separated from the good, Piccolo originally was a force of chaos and destruction. After being defeated by Goku and reincarnated into a new body, he began to change into a somewhat decent person. Pretty stock character mostly, especially once he gets relegated to the role of Goku’s sidekick.

Yusaku Godai(Maison Ikkoku) – Speaking of which, you don’t really get more stock than a poor ronin studying for college entrance exams, especially in a romantic comedy. Yusaku quickly becomes infatuated with the manager of the boarding house he lives in, but can’t bring himself to express his feelings. Meanwhile, the other residents frequently take advantage of him.

Females:

Melfina (Outlaw Star) – A bio android with no memory of her past or creation, but was actually created from the genome of an emissary of the Galactic Leyline. She must be plugged into the Outlaw Star in order to make it function properly. Generally very thoughtful and polite.

Kanami Yuta (Scryed) – Living together with the irresponsible Kazuma, Kanami has had to assume a large burden of responsibility, working on a nearby farm to supplement their income. Unknown by all, she has an Alter power that allows her to scry into the minds of others, though until the end of the series, she’s only able to use it subconsciously by feeling the emotions of others (usually kazuma) in her dreams.

Another Outlaw Star character enters the fray, but will she fare as well as Jim or will Kanami prove too strong? And how will the first Dragon Ball representative hold up?

Melfina, people. Because while Mimuri was a very kind hearted girl, (perhaps even more kind hearted than Melfina.) when it game down to it, she never really managed to be effectual at anything. Melfinal had a purpose that was outside the range of moral support. Her support role was far more tangible. Why she’s a living nav computer who could probably quite literally kick Mimuri’s ass. Plus Melfina’s hotter… and might actually have a chance at getting her man in the sack. (e.g. Ryuho and Kazuma are fighting each other for all eternity, hence will never go and hook up with their respective love interests.)

Daitetsu Kunikida (Blue Seed) – Leader of a small government unit formed to eliminate the Aragami threat. While he’s an effective leader, he’s also very protective of Momiji Fujimiya (if used as a human sacrifice, she can banish the Aragami), which eventually causes a conflict of interests.

Mamoru Kusanagi (Blue Seed) – As a small child, his family was killed by an Aragami and he was implanted with seven mitama for the purpose of killing the Khushinada, giving him some fairly extraordinary powers, as well as orange skin and catlike eyes. Throughout the series, he watches over Momiji, but is reluctant to get into a relationship with her due to lasting feelings for her dead(?) sister, Kaede.

Ranpha Franboise (Galaxy Angel) – Being from a comedic series (almost along the lines of Looney Tunes), Ranpha’s character is simplistic. She’s vain and utterly obsessed with snaring a rich (preferably handsome) man. As a member of the Angel Troupe, she wears a device on her head that can be used as several different types of weapons/utilities. For some reason, she can also make weapons appear out of thin air.

Utena Tenjou (Revolutionary Girl Utena) – When Utena was orphaned at an early age, she met a "prince" who gave her the strength to carry on and left her with a ring that would supposedly lead her back to him. He made such a strong impression with her that she decided to become a prince herself. She eventually found her way to a school where people with similar rings held fencing duels for possession of a girl called the Rose Bride, quickly becoming champion and befriending her new bride, Anthy.

Well, this is a first. Two characters from the same series. I guess that kind of alienates people who haven’t seen it, but there’s nothing to be done.

Sousuke Sagara (Full Metal Panic) – Having spent nearly all his life on various battlefields, Sousuke is well-suited to life in a mercenary organization like Mithril. He’s not so well-suited to life in high school though, which is unfortunate since he’s forced to enroll as part of an undercover operation to protect a teenage girl whose mind holds secrets that terrorists across the world would love to have. He has absolutely no idea how to act in a social setting, so he winds up drawing a gun on anything or anyone he finds suspicious (which is basically everyone). Well, either that or throwing a hand grenade at them. Either way, it’s not very appropriate behavior in a school!

Rosette Christopher (Chrno Crusade) – As an exorcist in the Order of Magdalene, it’s Rosette’s job to hunt down and destroy devils, though her ultimate goal is to find and rescue her younger brother from a devil called Aion. She works together with a reformed devil named Chrno who is able to unleash his power only when Rosette sacrifices a piece of her lifespan. As such, she’s resigned herself to the fact that she probably won’t make it to thirty, so she tries to accomplish as much as possible in the little time she has left.

Lafiel (Banner of the Stars) – Full name: Viscountess Paryunu Abriel Nei Dobrusk Lafiel. Quite a mouthful, eh? As a princess of the Abh empire—the Abh are a race of genetically engineered humans designed to function effectively in space—Lafiel is expected to remain stern and aloof at all times. However, beneath her confident and arrogant exterior lies a vulnerable and self-doubting young girl. Nevertheless, her tenacity, ingenuity, and sheer pig-headedness have allowed her to emerge victoriously from dangerous situations many times.

This looks to be a much stronger match-up. I have no idea which way it’ll go, but I imagine it’ll be interesting any way you slice it.

Still, it pains me to have to withhold my own vote this time since I’d love to see Lafiel go a long way!

Urd (Ah! My Goddess) – A second-class goddess and half sister to Belldandy, Urd served as system administrator for Yggdrasil until she was banished to earth for her irresponsible behavior. She considers herself to be a Goddess of Love, but she generally causes more problems than she fixes. Some of her notable characteristics are her tendency to be put to sleep by Enka music and that she drinks sake to recharge her powers.

Bloodberry (Saber Marionette J) – Representing the most aggressive aspects of the female psyche, Bloodberry is rude, boisterous, and impulsive. Unlike the other marionettes, her advances toward Otaru are overtly sexual. In battle, she relies on brute force.

Sakura Shinguji (Sakura Wars) – As the daughter of the last demon war’s biggest hero, she has inherited his spiritual power, as well as the holy sword Arataka. After living in the country all her life, moving to the big city to join the Flower Division and help fend off a new wave of demons was pretty daunting, giving her an intial reputation as a clumsy hick.

Millie Thompson (Trigun) – As a representative of a major insurance company, she and her partner are responsible for minimizing the damage caused by the notorious outlaw, Vash the Stampede. Though extremely simple and honest, she’s also sharp as a tack. She just doesn’t quite realize it. She carries a stun gun that’s almost as large as she is (and she’s pretty big) under her coat.

Joseph Carpenter/Joker (R.O.D.) – As the head of the British Library’s Special Operations Unit (whoever came up with that concept is a genius, a loon, or both), Joker serves the ultimate goal of restoring England’s power in the world. To achieve that end, he is willing to commit as many atrocities as necessary. His calm, confident, and easy-going exterior actually conceals a very sinister side of his personality. While he has no physical power at all, his skills in planning and manipulation make him an extremely formidible villain.

Gene Starwind (Outlaw Star) – Though born on Earth, he was stranded on the planet Sentinel III early in life after the attack that killed his father. This instilled in him both a fear of space flight and an intense hatred of pirates. Years later, he went into business with Jim Hawking as a jack-of-all-trades mercenary, and eventually came into possession of an experimental spacecraft that was soon named the Outlaw Star.

Rei Hino/Sailor Mars (Sailor Moon) – Among the Sailor Senshi, Rei is the big-sister personality, though her sharp wit and sarcasm sometimes makes it hard to see her affection for the others. She lives with her grandfather at the Hikawa Shrine, where she serves as a Shinto priestess. Her specific powers include the ability to manipulate fire, seal or banish evil spirits, and use her psychic powers to predict the future.

Lynn Minmay (Macross) – Though she starts as a typical fun-loving Japanese girl, Minmay is soon caught up in the Zentradi war and winds up on board the SDF-1 Macross. There, she wins a beauty contest which propels her to stardom and discovers that her singing disrupts the Zentradi soldiers, giving the Macross an edge in battle. Unfortunately, her fame eventually took a toll on her and led her to run away and search for a new way of life.

Some very heavy hitters this time, I think. While Joker wasn’t a particularly big presence in the R.O.D. OAV series, he was quite the ruthless villain in the TV series. On the other hand, Starwind is no slouch in the popularity department. Meanwhile, Minmay and Sailor Mars both have their own fan followings that could (hopefully) turn things ugly.

Though he’s a complete delinquent with a total disdain for authority figures, he also has a big heart, values fair play, will sacrifice himself in an instant to help those he loves.

Even though she chose to become a vampire, she frequently rebels against her nature by refusing to drink blood, causing her to be far weaker than she should be.

Akane Tendou (Ranma 1/2) – As the youngest daughter of the Tendo family, she was chosen by her father and sisters to marry Ranma Saotome. After some initial bad impressions, she came to hate his guts, although time eventually changed her feelings and an unspoken love grew between the two of them. She’s a proficient martial artist, a complete tomboy, and has a very short fuse, especially about Ranma’s antics.

His keen mind and ruthless nature are enough to make him a dangerous opponent, but his lethal skills with a katana complete the package and make him a nearly perfect killer.

Alphonse Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist) – In a failed attempt to bring his dead mother back to life, Al’s entire body was lost. However, his brother, Edward, was able to attach his soul to a suit of armor to save him. Together with his older brother, he sought the philosopher’s stone, which held the power to restore their bodies to normal. However, becoming the stone himself threw a bit of a wrinkle into that plan.

Kei Yuki (Space Pirate Captain Harlock) – Although she’s one of the youngest members of the Arcadia’s crew, she serves as one of the ship’s key officers. In addition to her duties as navigator and science officer, she also frequently takes part in landing operations and is a crack shot in a firefight. She’s generally level-headed, but would risk her life in an instant to help her friends.

Linna Yamazaki (Bubblegum Crisis) – Since the two versions of this character are so different, I’ll have to address them individually, but I’ll still count them together. In the original series, Linna is a greedy, shallow yuppie with a habit of blowing through boyfriends. She generally served as comic relief and was the least developed of the main characters. In the 2040 update, Linna received a better treatment as a country girl who came to the city in order to seek out and join the Knight Sabers and live out her dreams of heroism. It doesn’t take long for her to join up and turn into quite a powerhouse.

Sorry, but while I have seen pieces of both, I haven’t seen enough to remember enough to clearly identify the characters presented. (Well I’ve only really seen spinnoffs of Harlock Saga, but I had seen 4 episodes of the Bubblegum Crisis series. But it’s been ages since then.)

I think pretty much anyone could have pegged how the male vote would go, but I honestly thought there would be a bit of competition for the female side, so Linna’s total annihilation comes as a bit of a shock for me.

Toshiro "Tochiro" Oyama (Space Pirate Captain Harlock) – Genius engineer responsible for the creation of the Arcadia, a powerful pirate vessel commanded by his best friend, Harlock. He’s generally outgoing and definitely a likeable sort, but his tendency to die young in most of his incarnations hinders lasting relationships.

Inu Yasha (Inu Yasha) – With his half-human/half-demon heritage, Inu Yasha has a hard time fitting into either world. He’s crass, rude, and prefers to deal with problems in the most straightforward way possible, generally boiling down to either killing or breaking something.

Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury (Sailor Moon) – The resident genius of the Sailor Senshi, as well as the most sensible of the group. Ami’s powers are water-based and generally used for tactical gain. Her intellect makes it difficult for her to make new friends, but she’s completely loyal to the ones she has. In addition to the usual nerd traits of enjoying art, science, and playing chess, she also likes pop music and swimming.

Teletha Testarossa (Full Metal Panic!) – An energetic but clumsy 16-year-old genius in the employ of the anti-terrorist organization, Mithril, Tessa commands the prototype submarine, Tuatha de Danaan. Her already-exceptional scientific and mathematical skills are made even more powerful by her status as a Whispered, but she has an inferiority complex due to her older brother being even smarter than she is. Also tends to go out of her way to prove people wrong when they say she can’t do something.

For the females this time, we have a battle of teenage geniuses. The males include an extremely high profile character and a lesser-known character that will probably claim the votes of anyone familiar with him, as well as those who simply want to look like they’re familiar with older shows.

Yuki is generally quiet and does not speak unless asked about something or required to by her duties.

Kei (Dirty Pair) – A trouble consultant for the World Welfare Works Association (3WA) who shares the codename "Lovely Angels" with her partner, Yuri. The two are also known as the Dirty Pair for their tendency to wreak ungodly havoc wherever they go, although it usually isn’t exactly their fault. Kei is the more aggressive of the two and prefers to shoot first and ask questions later. The bigger the gun, the better.

Gourry Gabriev (Slayers) – He may have yogurt for brains, but Gourry is just about the best swordsman out there. Though completely clueless, he’s a good guy with a noble spirit and the appetite of ten normal men. His Sword of Light is pretty badass also.

D (Vampire Hunter D) – The son of Dracula and a human woman, D is an outcast in both worlds, looked down upon by vampires as a half-breed and feared by humans for his heritage. His skill as a vampire hunter is unrivaled due to his vampiric powers and the fact that he’s hardly affected at all by the traditional vampiric weaknesses. On top of that, he has a wise-cracking sentient parasite in his left hand that has a wide array of supernatural powers. He may look young, but he’s actually ten thousand years old.

Mai Tokiha (My-HiME) – In a bit of a change from the normal magical girl archetype, Mai is actually incredibly angsty. Feeling responsible for the death of her mother, she takes as much responsibility for her little brother as possible. Her powers as a HiME allow her to summon a creature that seems to be a hybrid of a dragon, whale, and phoenix, and is capable of generating near-nuclear levels of heat.

Ruriko Ikusawa (Gatekeepers) – Being the first identified Gate Keeper in Japan, she was perhaps the most important member of A.E.G.I.S. until being converted to the enemy’s side. She’s a model student in school and possesses healing powers.

Frankly, I’m not familiar with either of the female characters, but the males are both pretty high-profile. Since they come from radically different archetypes, it could make for a tight battle. Or not. I suck at predicting these things, after all.

Being used to the solitude of a farm, he constantly talks to himself and becomes frustrated with the pressures of city life. Despite his shortcomings, he’s generally a kind person who will always put his friends first.

Mugen (Samurai Champloo) – Though he’s usually crass and vulgar, Mugen is… Well, that’s about all there is to him, actually. He likes being a pain in the ass, so he does it whenever possible. His combat techniques are modeled more after breakdancing than any martial art and he keeps coming back from the dead somehow.

Rei Ayanami (Evangelion) – Stoic and introverted, Rei believes her life has no value, so she treats herself accordingly. Of course, this could be because she was artificially created to help bring about the end of the world and has numerous clones waiting to take her place if anything happens to her. Oh, she also pilots a giant robot that isn’t really a robot.

His name is Steven Blum. He also goes by David Lucas depending on what company he’s doing work for. He also does work for commercials, Cartoon Network (Tom from Toonami, Jamie on Megas XLR, etc) and lots of video games also. He’s one of the better voice actors that do work in anime dubs in my opinion, but he wasn’t always so hot, such as his role in Macross Plus.

Tomo Takino (Azumanga Daioh) – She’s a bit of a walking conundrum, seeing as she’s peppy and competitive, but also unathletic and lazy. Tomo is incredibly impulsive, so she constantly aggravates the people around her, but she’s capable of concentrating on a task when she absolutely has to.

Maetel (Galaxy Express 999) – Many a poor fool has wound up as part of the machinery that supports the planet Andromeda thanks to her guidance. It’s not that she’s evil or anything, but your mother being a megalomaniacal robotic queen kind of limits your career choices. Though Maetel’s not a robot herself, she switches human bodies to circumvent the aging process. Her original body is buried under the ice of Pluto.

Both were very close battles at first, but Spike and Tomo pulled away at the end, leaving Maetel at the end of the line and Vash without any more donuts. I’m not happy about that, btw. As Ameena has only just joined and could easily vanish after a day or two, I would have discounted that vote if it was a deciding factor, but since it wasn’t, there’s not really any sense in striking it.

Syaoran Li (Cardcaptor Sakura) – As a relative of the person who created the Clow cards, Syaoran believes himself to be their rightful inheritor. However, after Sakura is officially deemed their master, he becomes her friend and ally, and later falls in love with her. He is proficient in martial arts, swordsmanship, and sorcery.

Ken Washio (Gatchaman) – Despite the boy scout image he was given in the Battle of the Planets version of the show, Ken is actually quite a hellraiser. As the leader of the Science Ninja Team, he frequently takes foolish risks, but won’t tolerate the people on his team doing the same. Although he’s naturally charismatic and a show-off, he’s absolutely clueless when it comes to romance.

Females:

Skuld (Ah! My Goddess) – A second-class Goddess and one of Yggdrasil’s system debuggers, Skuld is the younger sister of Belldandy and Urd. She descended to Earth thinking that Belldandy was being forced to live with Keiichi against her will (with the ulterior motive of alleviating her loneliness), but when she discovered that isn’t the case, she decided to stay as Belldandy’s unofficial chaperone. Skuld’s engineering skills are second-to-none and frequently either come in handy or create minor catastrophes.

Misato Katsuragi (Evangelion) – As a teenager, she was at ground zero when the Second Impact occurred, surviving only because of her father sealing her in a protective capsule. Years later, working for NERV, she served as Head of Operations, overseeing the missions of the Evangelion units. Though she’s generally very professional and efficient at work, she’s a complete slob at home, where she drinks heavily, picks on Shinji, and relies on instant food since she can’t cook.

I doubt that the males will draw that much interest this time, but a high-profile female battle should make up for it.

Eikichi Onizuka (GTO) – He’s rude, loudmouthed, and perverted, but this former leader of a biker gang is quite possibly the greatest teacher in Japan. Although he loves his students and would do almost anything for them, he’s not afraid to use his martial arts skills to administer a little tough love when the situation demands it.

Takeo Takakura (Magic Users Club) – Here’s a guy who can think perverted thoughts about anything. This teenage wizard, although he’s the leader of his club, basically has no idea what he’s doing and it learning as he goes. He loves looking at the girls in the club, but finds it a bit hard to focus on them while fending off the advances of Aburatsubo, the other male club member.

Females:

Miaka Yuki (Fushigi Yugi) – After being sucked into a book and spat out in another world, this ordinary junior-high student is accepted by the natives as the legendary Priestess of Suzaku and begins a quest to gather seven Celestial Warriors. Although she’s good natured, she’s not too bright. She happens to be a big fan of anime, sometimes imitating well-known characters over the course of her journey.

Lime (Saber Marionette J) – Of the series’ principle characters, Lime is the most childlike, being naive, playful, inquisitive, impulsive, and perpetually cheerful. Though strong in combat, she has no special abilities to set her apart.

Since this one doesn’t look to be a very big battle, I’m going to update as usual tomorrow, although I may do it a little late in the day.

Female: Miaka Yuki… The female lead in Fushigi Yuugi, she’s just one of those characters that I love, and hate. I think she’s too dependent on others for too much… But at the same time, she possesses a quite potent courage and a strong sense of right from wrong. Which sets her quite apart from the female leads of most shojou manga, which have stories driven the the personal desires of said female leads, in lieu of any moral compass.

Not a shocking outcome for the males, although it was a really good draw for Onizuka. I really thought Miaka would dominate the females though. Oh well, tiebreaker time. Lime advances, cause I really didn’t care and the coin said so.

D-boy (Tekkaman Blade) – A very typical stoic superpowered hero, constantly keeping the secrets of his past hidden for no good reason and kicking lots of alien ass. I have to give him credit for some decent badassery in the sequel though.

Hikaru Ichijyo (Macross) – Unlike most sci-fi heroes, Hikaru is humble rather than hot-headed and cheerful rather than brooding. After attending the SDF-1 Macross’s launch ceremony, he was quickly swept up into the war, soon demonstrating remarkable piloting skills and leadership abilities. His name was changed to Rick Hunter in Robotech.

Females:

Naru Narusegawa (Love Hina) – A teenage girl with a short temper, Naru is also a top candidate for admission to Tokyo University. Because of her relentless studying throughout high school, she is extremely nearsighted and requires thick glasses to see properly, which she avoids wearing whenever possible. Her favorite activity seems to be punching Keitaro halfway to the moon over trivial things and misconceptions.

Hyatt (Excel Saga) – Hyatt is quite a competent agent of ACROSS except for one little quirk: she dies at least once an hour. She’s soft-spoken and generally clueless, but she follows instructions fairly well for a sickly alien(?) princess.

This looks like it’ll be one-sided both ways. Let the slaughter commence.

Also, please vote for Hikaru under that name, not Rick Hunter, as it will be easier to count that way.

Actually, I made it out like it would be competely one-sided because when I say things like that, it usually jinxes the rumble and things turn out to be the opposite of my expectations. I’m actually hoping for a close contest, as always.

Momiji Sohma (Fruits Basket) – A cute but androgynous-looking 15-year-old cursed with the spirit of the rabbit of the Chinese zodiac. Although he seems happy-go-lucky, he’s actually had a very difficult family life. For some reason, he likes to wear a female’s school uniform with shorts instead of a skirt.

Kenshin Himura (Rurouni Kenshin) – Known as the Hitokiri Battousai, Kenshin was a nearly invincible assassin in the days of the Meiji revolution. After the war, he disappeared and began to wander throughout Japan, seeking to atone for the many deaths he was responsible for. To this end, he carries a katana with the blade on the wrong side, making him almost incapable of killing people. Though he’s generally goofy and well-intentioned, a darker side of his personality lurks beneath the surface.

Mizuho Kazami (Onegai Teacher) – An alien being sent to earth to monitor its development, her plans were disrupted before she even got started when a young man saw her ship land. Soon after starting work at the local high school as a teacher, she wound up in a compromising position with that same guy, Kei, and was forced to marry him. Though she’s usually sensible, she’s overly trusting of others and very jealous of other girls who get too close to Kei.

Tomoyo Daidouji (Cardcaptor Sakura) – As the best friend of Sakura Kinomoto, Tomoyo assists the Cardcaptor in her own unique way, both by covering for her to preserve her secret identity and by designing costumes for her to wear in battle. She is kind, pretty, intelligent, cunning and resourceful in a pinch, and speaks very formally due to her refined upbringing.

As a result of Akito’s torture, Yuki has low self-esteem and is claustrophobic.

Tetsuo Shima (Akira) – A young delinquent and member of a motorcycle gang led by his best friend, Kaneda, whom he harbors an inferiority complex about. When he develops frighteningly powerful psionic abilities, he cuts a swath of destruction through Neo-Tokyo in an attempt to find a person called Akira, who possesses the same power as himself and may be able to help him stop the headaches that came with his new abilities.

Umi Ryuzaki (Magic Knight Rayearth) – One of three girls taken from Tokyo Tower and whisked away to an alternate world called Cephiro to become Magic Knights. Umi is brash and arrogant, but is an expert fencer. Unlike the others, she doesn’t care at first about saving Cephiro and only wants to go home to compete in a fencing tournament, but soon comes around. She uses water-based magic and fights aggressively, using her speed to defeat opponents.

Aisha Clanclan (Outlaw Star) – Although she had originally been charged with the task of locating the Galactic Leyline by the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire, Aisha was removed from that duty and placed on a less desirable one as punishment for a failure. She later joined the crew of the Outlaw Star in order to search for "Hot Ice" Hilda. This catgirl drinks too much, eats too much, and can turn into a white tiger at will.

Although she’s a brat, who’s mostly self-centered and doesn’t really understand what it is to work a day in her life, but something is still to be said about grace and elegance. To have the such coolness and refinment in even the most dire of circumstances, is the mark of someone who’s really made of better stuff… which is of course why the three were chosen, who were chosen.

Ranma spends much of his time being beaten up by his fiance, Akane, whom their respectives fathers arranged his marriage to, as well as beating up a peanut gallery of oddball idiots who either want to marry him, Akane, or someone who wants to marry one of the two. Did I mention that he turns into a girl when splashed with cold water.

Henrietta (Gunslinger Girl) – Following the brutal murder of her family and facing death herself, this innocent little girl was saved by a secret branch of the Italian government, turned into a cyborg, and trained as an assassin.

Of course, being a reincarnated princess from the moon tends to limit one’s future prospects just a bit, so she’ll eventually end up as a queen, married to Tuxedo Mask with a daughter everyone hates.

Lina Inverse (Slayers) – Standing between Lina and something wants–be it food, treasure, or anything else–is generally not regarded as a good move if you like being in one piece and uncooked. The pint-sized, flat-chested teenage sorceress has a quick temper and the power to flatten entire towns with a single spell. Her solution to most problems is pretty simple: blow it up until it isn’t a problem anymore and run away from everyone who’s pissed off about their house being a pile of ash.

Though she’s a skilled bounty hunter, her love of gambling keeps her pretty much broke.

Guys, I’m doing something very unorthodox this time. One of the two characters scheduled to do battle doesn’t seem to exist and I can’t figure out whose name it’s supposed to be (silly me for not double checking all the nominated characters), so I’m making a substitution from a pool of extra characters I have sitting around in case of just such an emergency.

Light Yagami (Death Note) – Substitute character. Light had everything going for him. He was brilliant, well-liked by all who knew him, and had a bright future as a lawyer in front of him. It bored him. When the notebook of a Death God (which allows a person to kill by simply knowing a person’s face and writing their name in the book) fell into his hands, he seized the opportunity to kill all those he deemed to be evil and rule over the people of his new world as a god.

Takumi Fujiwara (Initial D) – Although he didn’t realize it, driving his dad’s old car on Mt. Akina’s winding roads every night to deliver tofu caused Takumi to develop almost godlike racing skills. Although reluctant at first because he regarded driving as a chore, he soon came to appreciate the thrill of competition and began to seek out ever-tougher opponents.

Mikuru Asahina (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) – A time traveller from the future, Mikuru’s mission is to investigate the source of a strange disturbance that prevents her people from travelling beyond a certain point in history – a disturbance centered around a young girl named Haruhi. Because she’s shy and timid, Haruhi (who doesn’t know the truth about her friends being aliens, espers, and time travellers) takes a sadistic pleasure in forcing Mikuru to wear embarrassing outfits.

Belldandy (Ah! My Goddess) – A Goddess with a first class license, she grants wishes to good-hearted mortals. On a routine trip to earth to grant a wish for Keiichi Morisato, he wishes for her to stay by his side forever. When the wish is approved by the heavenly computer Yggdrasil, she moves in with him. Belldandy is perpetually kind to everyone she meets and always considers the feelings of others. However, though she hides it well, she tends to be very jealous and possessive, particularly of Keiichi.

This is definitely an interesting match-up. Two older characters with large loyal followings VS two new characters, both of whom are currently enjoying the height of their popularity.

Kain Blueriver (Lost Universe) – After inheriting a Lost Ship (an intelligent spacecraft with mystical powers) from his grandmother, Kain began to work as a mercenary. Though he’s good-natured, he can be stubborn and proud. He also likes wearing capes, even though he gets picked on for it by everyone around him.

Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV (or just Ed) (Cowboy Bebop) – A free-spirited young orphan with elite hacking skills. She has a short attention span, likes to say silly things, doesn’t wear shoes, and almost never walks upright.

Emeraldas (Space Pirate Captain Harlock) – Although she shares many similarities with her male counterpart, Captain Harlock, Emeraldas is a fearsome space pirate in her own right, possessing a heart of stone and her own distinct vision of honor and nobility, as well as a devastatingly powerful ship capable of challenging entire fleets.

Not much to see about the male pairing, but the females are interesting to me. On the one hand, there’s a well-known and popular character. On the other, there’s a character that’s about as iconic as they come, even if she doesn’t have the same exposure.

Jing (King of Bandits) – A young thief with a cheerful demeanor, he hardly seems like the type to call himself the Bandit King, but his appearance belies extraordinary skills. Unfortunately, far more questions about him are raised than answered before the series ends.

Anthy Himemiya (Revolutionary Girl Utena) – A shy, dark-skinned girl who appears at first glance to be slightly vapid and overly polite, she is actually the Rose Bride, supposedly holding within her the power to bring revolution to the world. Duels are fought among a small group of her fellow students for possession of her, and she does the bidding of the champion without question or fail. The reason for this is different in the series and movie, but both of them are twisted enough to give me headaches.

Nuku-Nuku/Atsuko Natsume (All-Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku) – When his son’s cat dies, a genius inventor, Kyusaku Natsume, transplants its brain into an android chassis designed to look like a young girl. Of course, the company he stole her new body from wants it back, so she’s forced to do battle with the toughest armaments Natsuko Natsume (Kyusaku’s estranged wife and owner of Mishima Heavy Industries) can throw at her. Good thing that body is a combat model.

Though she was originally intended to symbolize the feminist ideal of the 1970s, she was more often than not placed in the role of a damsel in distress or subservient female.

Himeno Awayuki (Pretear) – Although she’s alienated by her new family and peers after her father remarries, the high-spirited tomboy always tries to look on the bright side. When the Princess of Disaster/Calamity sends her minions to steal Leafe (life force) from her town, a group of Knights appear asking for her help in defeating them. By merging with one of the knights, she gains his power and becomes the Pretear. Butt-kicking ensues in rather formulaic fashion.

Roy Focker (Macross) – After playing a key role in the development of the VF-1 Valkyrie fighter unit, he joined the crew of the SDF-1 Macross as a squadron leader. Drinking, womanizing, and fighting recklessly were his primary hobbies until his untimely death from wounds sustained in battle.

Chi-Chi (Dragonball) – Wife to Goku, mother to Gohan and Goten. Tends to be jealous and overprotective. Honestly, there’s not much to the character in concept, but the execution makes up for it.

Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell) – A cyborg specializing in covert operations, almost her entire body (with the exception of her brain and a bit of her spine) has been replaced by mechanized components. Harlock’s as big a name as they come, easily ranking among the world’s most widely recognized anime characters, but Wolfwood’s no slouch in the popularity department either, especially considering that he has more American exposure.

She’s generally nice, but can play dirty in matters of romance. Too bad her schemes are about as obvious as an pink elephant on a freeway.

Excel (Excel Saga) – Hyperactive insanity personified, more or less. Excel is an agent of ACROSS, an organization devoted to conquering the world, starting in F City. She’s eager and loyal, but completely incompetent, although she does manage to accidentally save the world on occasion.

Two mech pilots. One a timeless classic, one ripping off Batman as thoroughly as possible. Also two women who are interesting, but have nothing in common I can comment on.

Pacifica Casull (Scrapped Princess) – Though she was born a princess, a prophecy foretelling her destroying the world on her 16th birthday led her to be abandoned and taken in by a family of commoners. As a result of the prophecy, she is constantly hunted by those who fear its outcome, relying on her adoptive siblings for protection. Though she’s sweet and innocent with an optimistic outlook, she blames herself for the suffering her existence causes and laments her inability to defend herself.

Rally Vincent (Gunsmith Cats) – After the death of her mother and her father’s disappearance, Rally took over the management of her father’s gun shop, although she also does bounty hunting on the side, together with her partner Minnie May Hopkins. Fraw Bow (Gundam) – A refugee of the Zeon attack on Side 7, in which her mother and grandmother were killed, Frau boarded the White Base along with her neighbors, Amuro and Hayato. Though she’s sensible, responsible, and generally kind, she can also be tough. In addition to serving as communication officer on the ship, she looks after a trio of orphans. Though she had romantic feelings for Amuro, they were never reciprocated, and she eventually married Hayato and adopted the three orphans.

Naga (Slayers) – Though she was born Princess Gracia Ul Naga Saillune, a tragic event in her past led her to abandon that identity. She can be graceful and has absolute confidence in herself, but geez her laugh can be annoying. Her trademark skimpy outfit was actually her mother’s lingerie. She fancies herself to be the greatest and most powerful rival of Lina Inverse, although she’s clearly delusional.

Voting Alucard – Gendo was a pretty cool character, for a sociopath; but he still failed because in the end he was destroyed and not allowed to partake of the Human Instrumentality when the project came to fruition. And Alucard is just that fucking awesome anyway and if their universes were to collide for some godawful reason the Eva pilots wouldn’t stand a chance, I don’t care how "invincible" Unit 01 is.

Though her own telekinetic powers are weaker than Lucy’s, she makes up for it with superior range and the ability to temporarily disable the powers of others.

Over the course of her quest to be turned back to normal, she comes into her own, learning to live independently and take pride in who she is.

Saya Otonashi (Blood/Blood+) – Focusing on the version of the character in Blood+ since she was unremarkable in the movie. Saya appears normal high school student, albeit one suffering from anemia and amnesia. However, her cheerful demeanor veils the ruthless nature of her vampiric side. She hunts vampiric demons called Chiroptera, as well as her own twin sister.

Years later, he took the name Char Aznable, joined the Republic of Zeon’s military, and made a name for himself as a mobile suit pilot, all for the sake of taking revenge against the Zabi family, leaders of the nation his father worked to build. Though his Newtype powers are weak, his extraordinary skills allow him to fight on an equal level with the greatest Newtypes alive.

Genjo Sanzo (Saiyuki) – Although he’s a monk, he doesn’t act much like one; drinking, smoking, and swearing are ways of life for him. Though he’s a rational thinker, he’s also arrogant and quick to anger. Despite outward appearances, he’s also a total do-gooder and will always step in to defend the weak. Weapon of choice: revolver.

Ruri Hoshino (Nadesico) – Having been raised in lab as part of an experiment, 12-year-old Ruri is distinctly lacking in social skills, but is otherwise a genius. She serves as the science officer on the Nadesico, where she constantly points out the idiocy of the rest of the crew, and occasionally her own.

Nenene Sumiregawa (R.O.D the TV) – Although she was a prodigious novelist in her high school years, Nenene hasn’t written anything new in years. Though she’s jaded and bitter, harboring feelings of abandonment from the disappearance of her closest friend, she starts to soften after meeting the Paper Sisters and eventually finds the will to resume her career.

Guts (Berserk) – It’s been said that he was cursed since the day he was born from a corpse hanging from a tree. Taken in by a mercenary company, he was raised by its leader in a harsh environment, knowing nothing but their violent ways. Eventually, he became a nearly invincible swordsman and a member of the Band of the Hawk. He’s also one of the few survivors of the Hawks, having narrowly escaped after their leader chose to sacrifice them to gain the power he craved. Now he hunts the demonic creatures that have been loosed upon the world, wielding an enormous sword and seeking to come face to face with Griffith again to settle the score.

Youko Nakajima (Twelve Kingdoms) – 16-year-old Youko thought she was an ordinary high school honor student until she was whisked away to another world by a man named Keiki, who swore loyalty to her even though they had never met. There she learned that she was the heir to the kingdom of Kei. Though initially weak-willed and introverted, she grows stronger over time and eventually becomes a decent enough queen.

Sumomo (Chobits) – A mobile persocom standing less than a foot high, Sumomo is a futuristic equivalent of a laptop computer. She’s programmed to be cute, nonsensical, and more than a little hyperactive.

He’s also the catalyst for certain changes in Haruhi Suzumiya’s mood that could endanger all of existence.

Jinto Lin (Banner of the Stars) – When a race called the Abh invaded his homeworld, his father negotiated a deal that escalated the two of them into the Abh nobility. Therefore, after learning the ways of the Abh, Jinto was promptly enlisted in their space forces to perform the required service to assume his title. Jinto is kind-hearted and rather naive, but also courageous and resourceful in a pinch.

Hikaru Shidou (Magic Knight Rayearth) – After being magically whisked away from Tokyo Tower and deposited in Cephiro, tomboyish Hikaru happily accepts the responsibility of being a Magic Knight, eager to fulfill her dreams of adventure and heroism. Along with two other girls, she sets out to rescue the imprisoned princess and save the land. Too bad there was an important detail left out of the job description.

Haruko Haruhara (FLCL) – This odd alien looks about 20 years old, rides a Vespa, communicates with other aliens via cat, and carries a bass guitar that seems to be made for Inspector Gadget, which she whacks Naota’s head with occasionally to open his N.O. channel.

I’m open to suggestions for ways to get the vote count up a bit.

Institute a rule that says that if a given round has less than x number of votes, it results in elimination of all characters in said round (where [i]x[/x] = whatever arbitrary minimum would make this more interesting).

And make a big production out of telling everyone on FFS this in chat and GD.
