Best Video Game Sounstrack Ever!!!

Wut’s your favorite of all time? Me personally would be between Legend of Zelda: Ocrarina of Time OST and Final Fantasy 7 OST

As a whole I’m going to have to say. Hyrule Symphony from Legend of Zelda. And if that’s not acceptable then I’ll say Arcanum of steamworks and magick obscura.

But that’s just what’s my favourite right now, I’m probably going to have a new favourite 10 mins from now.

It’s hard to put them in order, but here’s some:

* Donkey Kong Country: Not as good as its follower, but has still many memorable songs, including the great Aquatic Ambiance.

* Donkey Kong Country 2: The music in this classic impressed me very much when I played it the first time about ten years ago. The masterful melodies really gave the most power to its atmosphere, which was slightly darker than in the original DKC.

* Final Fantasy VI: I gotta admit that Nobuo was at his best when he composed FF VI’s music. IMO VI’s soundtrack beats even the OSTs of PS1’s Fantasies (VII, VIII, IX) as a whole.

* Final Fantasy X: FF X’s OST is very different from any other FF’s soundtrack, you can really hear that this time Nobuo had some help, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. The songs are more concentrated on describing the uniqueness of each area in the game, and there’s this great touch of ambient in some of them.

* Silent Hill 2-3: The OST of the original Silent Hill was great, but when composing the music to these two sequels Akira Yamaoka did something better. The industrial/rock/piano mixture works wonderfully and makes SH soundtracks so distinctive that no one can say there’s anything like it elsewhere.

Super Hydlide!! (aka Hydlide 3 on GH) It’s a genesis remake of a crappy NES rpg, made slightly more palatable. But the music is AWESOME. I’ll also throw a vote in for Link’s Awakening (Tal Tal Heights, baby!). I also enjoy Diablo 1, F-Zero, and Doom 1&2.

Mine would have to be the brillaint Metal Gear Solid Series..Fantasic stuff and Silent Hill too….brilliantly written music. 🙂

I would have to say Ys Book I and II for the Turbografx-16 / Turbo Duo. That’s what made the game so good. Even though the game is simple to beat (I’ve beaten it over 10 times, and I still play it) and the game is simple to master. You pretty much master the game as you play it anyways.

In my case this examples of videogames that mentioned above.. i really enjoyed now in this time… but listening in its original states.. not remixes…. its bring me back memories of what really a game is… a piece of wonderful work made with inventive and creative with one focus…. MAKE FUN TO PLAY!

You’re quite right, which is what makes it so hard to choose. I love hearing the fun 8 bit music in games while playing the games, but I could never listen to those songs casually (save for Mystic Mysidia from ff4, but that’s because that song is made of pure and untainted win). I guess when I say "best", I mean "what I can make a playlist out of and listen to while drawing, reading, etc".

I ike a wide variety of music, so it’s hard for me to find a soundtrack I don’t think is the best lol

I’ve gotta say Diddy Kong Racing. Rare makes some pretty good music. Although, I like "catchy" music, so it might not be for you.

I have to say, Final Fantasy has a great score. Uematsu and others who compose it are pure awesomeness. But FF7 isn’t at the top. I believe the tunes have aged though these generations, especially when you compare the soundtrack to EVERY game we know of. It doesn’t have the clean sound of a real orchestra (excluding the two songs above) like its sequels, like it’s been mixed. When I finished the game a year ago, I thought to myself, why doesn’t the music match the mood of the ending, when Meteor is about to hit and Cloud and his buddies almost fell inside the crater? That’s what left a lasting impression in the end. I’ll point out, it’s not fair to compare classic games like FF7 with today’s games, but this is a "Best Video Game Soundtrack Ever" debate, so we can’t complain these older games didn’t have the opportunity to create quality music.

My picks for best soundtrack:
-Einhander (greatest techno music to embrace a video game)
-Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War (perfect example of how an orchestra/band fits into a game)
-Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
-Guilty Gear XX (rock guitar mixes cleanly into a fighting game)

I really enjoy Akira Yamaoka and Koji Kondo’s work, but FF X is my fav. OST all time. I listen to this soundtrack everyday. Sets the mood so well in the game too… amazingly done.

As a whole; Chrono Trigger Final Fantasy VII, Guilty Gear X/X2, Onimusha 4, Star Ocean: Till The End of Time, Tales of Legendia, Wild ARMS 3rd & 4th, and Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner.

Almost all of the tracks, on every game, were awesome.

Others that stand out are the epic final battle songs on Ace Combat 4, 5,and ZERO. From the looks of it, Super Smash Bros. Brawl doesn’t look like it’s going to be half bad either…

Although, being a fan of that kind of music, I’d rather listen to that in a C.D. player rather than a moody (however brilliantly composed) score.
Since there’s usually nothing happening at the time that could possibly match the music, I’d rather listen to something standalone than music meant to be aided visually, like a setting in a video game.
Oh, and Sephiroth’s theme?
The only medieval choir song I like is Xepher, by tatsh.
Also, it’s a really ego-stroking song for Seph.

All of these have outstanding songs here and there, but the one game that has a truly complete and awesome soundtrack would be Twilight Princess

I think the opening of Metal Gear 2, hmm… the legend of zelda ocarina of time (ocarina’s melodies), mm.. sonic adventure (most of them)…. mm .. final fantasy VIII (when laguna and his team has fights) , FF X (at zanarcan whatever, the battle with jeght in his monster form) . Although it’s not the best music but it’s so funny that makes it good , TOTAL OVERDOSE (when there is a bunch of mexican gangs attacking you) , and of course the music of FF X-2 (i love all them) , super smash bros and Guilty Gear X

One game that nobody seems to have mentioned, and is probably my favourite soundtrack (although it is pretty hard to call) is Perfect Dark (the N64 one).

Not a bad track in there, and they all sound so damn cool.

My friends, the best soundtracks ever are from SNK and KONAMI, of course. Fatal Fury Special OST is a true classic. By the way, does anybody know where can I download Fatal Fury 2 and Special OST’s? And what about Metamorphic Force and Monster Maulers OST’s? I know the name of the album that contains Metamphic Force music is Konami Amusement Sounds Autumn ’93, but I don’t know where to get it. Having played so many different games, many of which had great music, it was difficult for me to single out my favorite game soundtrack, though I would have to say Mechwarrior 2 for the PC is at the top of my list. For a relatively simple game, and being as old as it is (1995), it’s still hard to believe that the quality of the music was lightyears ahead of the game’s other aspects, (graphics, sound effects etc.) For a while I had thought myself to be the only person to have ever actually put the game cd into a cd player and actually listen to the tracks aside from hearing them while playing the game. I was pleasantly surprised to discover how wrong I was, there being many others who greatly appreciated the game’s excellent music, who also thought they were "unique" in that regard.

Coming in at a close second for me would be Final Fantasy VIII. I found nearly all of the FF soundtracks to my liking, though I’d have to say VII is my least favorite of the one’s I’ve heard. I’ve never played IX, unfortunately, and I don’t think I’ll ever try out XI, with WoW (which happens to have excellent music along with the entire WC series) and various single player games taking up my gaming time already.

The Heroes of Might and Magic series’ music has always struck me as being one of its more memorable and noteworthy features. Others include the old classics like the Castlevania series (Bloodlines from Dracula X SNES is my favorite), Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, ActRaiser (I recently heard the symphonic suite, which was a real treat), Soulblazer (the Deathtoll battle has one of the coolest endgame boss songs, it really has an epic feel to it), and many, many others.

It’s hard to tell (Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, the legend of Zelda…) … but my top one is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Michiru Yamane is the best!!)

the soundtracks to kingdom hearts I and II

this is more of technical question than a personal ”oh that one song was pretty good” style answer.

i think final fantasy 8 had a very good all-round score.

it had everything. an epic opening with bits of the melody from that used here and there through-out the rest of the score to create a pallete/style. it has a record-selling ballad reaching number 3 in the japanese pop music charts and winning the japan gold disc award.

and the music like fragments of memories, drifting, roses and wine, love grows, trust me. they are really heart-felt sounding during the more softer parts of the story.

and for the rough bits: don’t be afraid has the military sound to it in keeping with SeeD. Don’t be afraid is a really addictive boss theme. ”the landing” is just kick-ass. and than ”the extreme” is so full of energy for the final battle. also ”the man with the machine gun” is pretty unique.

and than for the freaky parts of the game, the likes of lunatic pandora, and compression of time sounds spot on.

the dance scene song is nice too. the same melody as eyes on me, so it retains a style. (romantic ballad / waltz/love scene)

the air ship theme is one of the best IMO.

the castle, maybe i’m a lion, dance with the balamb fish, the oath, the salt flat plains, succsession of witches, fishermans horizon. they all fit well and sound good too.

the soundtrack for ff8 is about as good as they come.

This topic really puts sometimes me sad.. only seeing that the youths that post here is believed that the video games began from now on from Playstation 1. Them never, not even with the emulators that there is, they have tried to play some video game of the previous consoles. Jet Force Gemini – AMAZING. Actually, all of Rare’s games had great music.

F-Zero GX – Insane Rock and Techno that perfectly fits the balls-to-the-wall racing action.

Super Mario RPG – My favorite game ever, and the music is defintely a reason why.

Super Smash Bros. Melee – I love Nintendo’s tunes, and this is where a bunch of them all came together into one legendary soundtrack. I can’t wait for Brawl!

GTA Vice City – All that 80’s music in one game……WOW.

Favorite of all time remains: Ecco The Dolphin: Defender Of The Future. The best soundtrack in the illustrious but no doubt frustrating career of one of the best composers ever to produce video game music (Tim Follin).

Shadow Of The Colossus is the best soundtrack – in fact, one of the only truly good pieces of work, if not the only – in the last few years, and so deserves special mention for having broken the trend of the last decade or so. Remember when amazing soundtracks were somewhat regular? Where are today’s Final Fantasty IVs? Chrono Triggers? Castlevania: SOTNs? It’s not just video games, either. Movies used to blow me away with their music. I haven’t even thought about a movie’s score since Jurassic Park.

If I had to pick just one, I’d have to say Okami, hands down. In my humble opinion, it’s about as close to perfection as a soundtrack can get, and it’s certainly stands out more than other Japanese composed soundtracks.

Other top picks include Ace Combat 5, Final Fantasy Tactics, Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal, and Xenogears.

I’m gonna try to be a little different here.

Streets of Rage 2 – 1st level (the bar in particular) and the level with the stadium (so cool)

Illusion Of Time/Gaia – Can’t get enough of this, one of those games you play when you are young and to hear its music now gives you that weird nostalgic feeling.

Dead Rising – A great mix of rock, rap & metal for the mini-bosses, the mall music makes me laugh, strange to be killing zombies with that in the background.

Joe n Mac caveman Ninja – 2nd part of game, the map music turns deep and atmospheric, really gives a dark wasteland feel to it.

Killer Instinct – Such a variety of music, the boxer combo had a cool little dance/RnB as his level tune, awesome.

Mario is Missing – This is a strange one, but this music is really relaxing, some city specific songs made me laugh too, the Moscow one in particular.

This is Uematsu’s best work since FF9, which was his best work since FF6.

Michael Giacchino: Medal of Honor, Medal of Honor Underground, Medal of Honor Frontline.

Richard Jacques: Headhunter on Dreamcast.

Special mention for Hiroshi Kawaguchi: Outrun on Sega Arcade.

This soundtracks run across the last fifteen years. It surprises non-VGS fans that the best VGS are as good as the best movie soundtracks.

Jack’s Theme from Headhunter is as good and iconic as any movie hero’s theme and better than 99% of them. I am glad to see Jacques produce more of this kind of music for the Pursuit Force series (as opposed to the drearyness of the Headhunter sequel). Check out his website for some very lovely tunes of other genres.

Giacchino’s Medal of Honor is the definitive World War II action music and is the best tribute to John Williams ever composed.

Outrun is definitive J-pop driving music, catchy and happy and wonderful.

Turrican II is simply a masterpiece which, when released, was literally stunning (the seven plus minute title track which also displayed a comic strip story if left on the title screen is simply spine-tingling).

The Sonic soundtracks for genesis (all of them), Streets of Rage 2, Revenge of Shinobi!!!!!, DEUS EX!!!!!!!!!, TOO MANY MORE TO LIST!!!!!!!!

Back before emulators, I used to play a lot of horrible MS-DOS shareware, and those rarely had much if any memorable music. Rise of the Triad, however, had plenty, more than it probably deserved. I won’t say "best ever," but it definitely bothered me that the next Lee Jackson game, Duke Nukem 3D, had really boring music aside from the opening demo and then I don’t know what happened to Jackson after that. Yes, so, there.

I’m a complete shell-out when it comes to VGM so obviously I can’t pick just one:

*Xenogears, Chrono Series, and generally anything with Yasunori Mitsuda is good with me
*The Mother/Earthbound OSTs are all heartwarming and fun to listen to
*FFVI & FFXII in my opinion are the epitome of FF soundtracks, i’ll throw in FFT for good measure 😀
*The Silent Hill series OSTs are a must, how could I lull myself to sleep at night without being able to hear "One’s weaker self" playing at max around 2:00 AM?
*Oh and Lastly the Zelda series hands down.

Silent Hill-Akira Yamoaka is a genius when it comes to ambient tones and his soundtracks are amazing to listen to.

Shadow of the Colossus-Every video game fan could mistake this at first for a movie soundtrack but its suits the game so well and the atmosphere,its ambitious and well done out from the composer,enough to give listeners goosebumps:)

The original Lumines soundtrack. What can I say, I’m an electronica person! It’s not like something I would listen to excessively, but it is always good to hear in the game.

Final Fantasy IX OST. Everything is emotionally driven in some way, and it’s 100% Uematsu.

Bomberman Hero OST- The best avant-garde techno you will hear in ages.

it was tough but i would say Metal Gear Solid, the music was just good, almost flawless, or it probably is.

This is why music by soundTeMP rules! The actual soundtrack has 4 discs and one site classifies the soundtrack as "extremely rare". In my opinion, this is probably the best video game music soundtrack to date. 😯

One game that nobody seems to have mentioned, and is probably my favourite soundtrack (although it is pretty hard to call) is Perfect Dark (the N64 one).

Not a bad track in there, and they all sound so damn cool.

Runner up is Command & Conquer (the original one). Again, stuffed with tracks that are just incredibly cool.

Aw man, I was starting to get worried 😀 Yeah, Perfect Dark ties with Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye 007, and Timesplitters 2 & 3 as my favorite game soundtracks 🙂

GoldenEye, Command & Conquer (The whole serie up to Red Alert 2 Yuri’s Revenge, after that I don’t like very much), Perfect Dark and Final Fantasy VI and VII.
Those games marked my childhood, mainly because of their songs.

IMO the best video game OST would be Silent Hill 2.

but i’ve heard Uematsu worked overnight to produce the opera piece in ff6. So logically he has put the most effort into an OST ”ever”.

I mean, taking your bed into the office… Not to menntion working with limited soundware at the time.

I can’t really think of any other vast limitations.

MGS2 was interesting since they were communicating overseas. But that’s not as mad as working over your time to produce a now great peice of music.

Sorry, but most of the time you hear samples. Except the vocals and the orchestral ending theme. Even the Guitars are VST Instruments. (most of the sounds came from Sonic Implant)

By the way: The sounds from the PS1 Games based on (back than) state of the art high-quality-samples too. They where just heavily compressed. The reason why for example the strings sounding so annoying is, that the loop was extremely short.

A soundtrack where I like ALMOST ALL the songs: Mega Man 2 (thanks to Entertainment Systems, I like Wily Castle 2, I just don’t like the robot master battle song). I know I like Megaman 3 better, but I’m not a fan of Needleman’s & Shadowman’s stage music.

I also like Kikuta’s work in Secret of Mana. I wonder what happened to him? I know he left Square to work as a composer for a company called Sacnoth, then after Sacnoth went under, no one knows what happened to him.

For me it has to be Shin Sangokumusou 7/Dynasty Warriors 8’s soundtrack that’s number one. They brought back and remixed a lot of the older songs…including Circuit (IF staff roll for Wei kingdom, not sure if used for credits for the other kingdoms).

^that and also Final Fantasy Series (obviously – since it’s basically this and mainly Final Fantasy related stuff that I listen to on my PSP)

Darius II. (My favorite being the genesis version) Nothing for me has evoked the same type of imagery that this soundtrack has when playing the game. In just the first level, Olga Breeze manages to detail the exact sounds I would imagine each of the enemies having as they appear on screen, somehow even detailing the way they are shaped or the way they make their entrance by musical cues alone. Believe me, even as a kid, I always thought: "Huh, if weird fish-robots were jumping out of the liquidy flames of the sun to kamikaze my ship into oblivion… That is EXACTLY what it would sound like." Say Papa at the end levels, where there is nothing but the sound of this soothing music complete with gentle ocean waves while you’re blasting things to kingdom come blew my mind as a kid. Don’t even get me started on Zone B: Muse Valley. Give just the first level of the game on a genesis a try, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Oh, this is easy. Anything Super Robot Wars games put out. …I even own the soundtracks to Super Robot Wars: Original Generations, 2nd Super Robot Wars OG and Super Robot Wars OG: Moon Dwellers, while I’ve pre-ordered the soundtrack to Super Robot Wars V. I’m likely also getting the soundtrack to SRW X once it’s released.

It’s honestly the best game bgm I’ve ever heard – it was even the first reason why I became a Super Robot Wars fangirl. …Not to mention there’s a LOT of music in this series. For example, nearly every OG character has their own personal bgm theme which makes like 100+ unique themes (out of which my favorites are Steel Beowulf, Chinese Gym Teacher of Flame, Hero Senki, Dark Knight, Trombe!, The Sword That Cleaves Evil, Real Ability, Burning Red, Roar O One Who Breaks Supremacy, Resisting Against Fate, Messenger From The Void, Valsion and some themes from Banpresto pilots not OG-fied yet).
