Yesterday, I paid a visit to my local EB Games (on business, but I stuck around for a bit) and spoke to the manager for a while. Eventually, the topic of conversation turned to the new consoles. He’s not taking any particular side, but he made a couple of interesting observations.

First, when they started taking PS3 preorders, the majority of the people who showed up to order one were black. While the surrounding area has a very high concentration of blacks, the town I live in is mostly white. There are several other EB Games and Gamestop stores in the area.

Next, when the Wii went up for pre-order, the people who came out to get their name in for one were almost entirely white. He told me that he noticed it pretty quick and started counting the number of blacks. Three showed up and only one was close enough to the front of the line to get one.

I found the racial element there really interesting. Now, for all I know, it could just be a strange fluke. Then again, perhaps there’s something else behind it. Discuss.

So, what? PS3 is a console preferred by black people?. I`d just chalk this down to a strange fluke to be honest. I can`t see a console brand being any different than say, a t.v brand. Sony and Nintendo have done nothing that would suggest to me that that have targeted a certain race for a potential market.

Also probably has to do with the console being bigger and more expensive, penis compensation complexes and whatnot. The same thing that motivates blacks to purchase that SUV the Denali.

Definitely a cultural thing. It’s not terribly surprising. I think that Wii appeals very heavily to people who are a little more on the geeky side, which is hip in prevalent white culture now. Madden is one of the best selling video game series in the US and so is GTA. They’re amongst the titles you’re most likely to find if searching any PS2 owner’s collections in the US. Along with other popular franchises like Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, and Gran Turismo, plus a smattering of games which get sales based on their licenses like Harry Potter and Spider-Man. I don’t know where you get your black people and violent controversial games statistics from, but the posts are sufficiently stupid enough for me to take them as jokes and not try to figure it out.

I’ve seen little evidence of this I would say white people buy more violent titles. When I go to my local gamestop there is always a white kid that’s buying a violent/Mature title, and their moms for some unknown reason actually consent to the purchase. As far as the Madden thing goes I don’t know how true that is I know people that only rent/borrow sport-based video games, myself I’ve only played Madden 97 and 05. I play more adventure games that actually stimulate reading and someties problem solving. Final fantasy/ all rpgs have aided in my reading skill and mathematics. Though I know very little white people the ones I know have played or purchased atleast 1 sports title.

I don’t make much of this, other than a certain demographic (which coincidentally contains more people of darker skin) prefers the PS3 over the Wii.

Many of these so called "racial" descrepancies are really based on other factors.
