is there any good heavy metal music of today that does not have some guy randomly screaming his lungs out behind vocals?
What happened to good old thraassssssshhhhhhh :scream:
Black Sabbath/ Ozzy Osbourne. O:
I’m not sure if they’re considered heavy metal as i’m not that well versed in the differences between the different metal genres, but their one of the few metal bands i’ve heard recently that I like. There is some yelping in it, but it’s pretty good at best and tolerable at worst for someone who doesn’t care much for screaming like myself. Even if you don’t like the screaming, the music itself warrants a listen.
By recent, I’ll generally put in anything from the 90’s to now.
– = Prog Metal
* = Power Metal
^ = Other
-Dream Theater (Recommended Albums: Awake, Images And Words)
-Ayreon (my personal favourite prog metal band: The Human Equation, Into The Electric Castle)
-Tool (Lateralus, nima)
-* (Power And Prog) Kamelot (The Black Halo)
* Nightwish (Oceanborn, Wishmaster)
* Sonata Arctica (Silence, Ecliptica)
* Rhapsody (Symphony Of Enchanted Lands)
-* Symphony X (The Divine Wings Of Tragedy, The Odyssey)
– Pain Of Salvation (Remedy Lane)
^ Ulver (There is only one metal album by them you should consider, if you don’t want screaming, it’s Themes From William Blake’s Marriage Of Heaven And Hell, after that they kind of leave the metal field all together into a electronica/trip-hop kind of thing, so your call on getting that)
^ Wolfmother
^ Pantera (Ok, I know you probably know them already, here it is anyway: Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display Of Power)
*HammerFall (Glory to The Brave, Legacy Of Kings)
Another power metal band most people like is DragonForce, I think they’re pretty meh, great guitarwork, just gets repetitive fast. Pick up any album by them, they’re all basically the same formula. I probably enjoyed Sonic Firestorm the most.
Kyuss I’m not so sure whether to place as stoner rock or stoner metal, either or you should pick up Blues For The Red Sun and Welcome To Sky Valley. …And The Circus Leaves Town is a good choice too, though it’s usually not as well-received by others. I liked it though.
Thats all I can think of right now anyway.
I veto Lacuna Coil.
Anyway, I don’t think Mastadon has enough singing to match what this guy is looking for
Anyway, MarioMurderer, I’d also say check out The Sword. Probably my favorite newer metal band and they don’t scream at all. They sound a good bit like a modern Black Sabbath.
You may also like Nevermore, they have straight ahead vocals over fairly heavy/technical progressive metal.
And I have to second the Nevermore recommendations. Not really familiar with The Sword, but they look pretty decent.
Truce?
I already know bands like Megadeth, Pantera, yadda ya.
Thanks for the recommendations, guys 🙂
You just need to look around a bit…
I can advice you quite a lot:
– Sonata Arctica
– Anathema
– Paradise lost
– Theatre of tragedy
– Dream Theatre
– Black Label Society
– After Forever
– Dreamtale
– Epica
– Evergrey
– Falkenbach
– Kamelot
– Kotipelto
– Lacuna Coil
– Lacrimosa Profundere
– Luca Turilli Dreamquest
– Lumsk
– Lunatica
– Machinae Supremacy
– Masterplan
– pain of salvation
– a lot of opeth songs
– Poisonblack
– Sentenced
– Sirenia (both don’t have a lot of hard screaming…)
– Tiamat
– …
If you want something melodic, try checking out some European power metal bands. They usually have decent vocals (and even ones that are opera-trained, like Roy Khan in Kamelot and Tarja, even though she got kicked out), but growling is very rare in this genre.
Please tell me you’re joking.
I’m entirely serious.
