Just post anything you think a new player should know about this game when playing it the first time.
I always teach them every spell and they end up being uber beyond belief ๐
Just don’t use Umaro or Gau, and I think you’ll be fine.
Edit: Oh, and I don’t know if the vanish/x-zone thing works in FFVIa, but if it does, DON’T USE IT ON THE DOOM GAZE. This is my advise to a new player. ๐
Agreed. Which can be a blessing or a curse depending on how you put it (took me a good 6 hours to take out Doom Gaze).
of course i renamed people that but it was an awesome experience
i even had meowth kill persian at times for fun
okay sorry really but i just made this all up[
If you know how to use Gau, he’ll easily become your best character.
Also, when can I get Mog? I just returned from the Espers’ world (Terra’s memory), and currently heading off to Narshe.
Sorry ๐
This is driving me crazy! I just found out that if I missed him ealier, I don’t get to play him until much later in the game.
I’m at the Esper Mountain, so how long until I meet Mog?

He is hidden in the caves of Narshe in the World of Ruin.
The old man who gave you his treasures earlier (remember, the house with the Thiefknife and Sneak Ring in it?) worries about the treasure he didn’t give
you; the locked chest. If you are kind enough to take a look for him, you’ll just see Lone Wolf running off with its contents.
Follow Lone Wolf to retrieve the treasure! He escapes to the mines. The path is straightforward. On occasion, you’ll see Lone Wolf running from you. And eventually, you’ll have him cornered, but the situation is looking grim, as Lone Wolf has taken a Moogle hostage.
If you try to approach, Lone Wolf will threaten to kill the Moogle. Sweaty mongoloids whose basic garment consist entirely out of underpants will tell you that you can recruit Mog by trying to walk over to Lone Wolf over and over and over until you loose patience and spam message boards, but this is humbug. The trick here is to simply stand still at the spot you automatically back away to. After a while, the Moogle will be able to free itself, and in the struggle that ensues, both are thrown over a side of the cliff. Will you help the Moogle, or will you try to obtain the treasure you initially came for?
The treasure is a Gold Hairpin, a Relic that cuts your MP usage in half. It’s a Relic I only find useful when playing a Low Level Game, as you will be able to cast spells you otherwise don’t have the MP for. But in a normal game, the better (and morally superior) choice is helping the Moogle.
From Djibriel’s walkthrough (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/file/554041/39863)
I would not use Umaru, Gau or Strago or realm as they are the weakest (in that order) characters usually in my arsenal. Umaru and Gau become uncontrollable too so… Realms Draw fails, n i remember on the SNES cart, used to Glitch and freeze the game. I think it was on the floating continent. If you were close to a save point, sometimes you were luck enough to restart your game with 99 of all the best weapons and items ie Illumina megalixers….
You’re not alone on this. The last few times I got to the scene, I shed a tear or two as well ๐
Gau never mentions the Empire, nor makes any vow to save the world. Nay, some of his first acts as a Returner are to shout gibberish, misname Sabin, and to laugh after scaring hard-earned party funds into a pit.
But what Gau lacks in fashion, vocabulary and financial savvy, he makes up for in a huge repertoire of attacks and accompanying protections. Some players do not bother to tap into these vast resources, citing how "Gau is uncontrollable."
Ah, but some of life’s most beautiful processes unfold beyond our control: heartbeats, breath, sneezes, passing the bar exam with flying colors, completing a violent but steady ascent through a drug cartel to emerge as the world’s most feared and wealthy kingpin.
It is folly to claim that everything involuntary is worthless!
It was a very poignant and emotional scene for the time, up to that point. I think thats why i sticks out in most peoples minds at least.
It doesnt really stack up visually to any of the deep scenes with Aerith, Rinoa, Princess Garnet or Lady Yuna. Its like watching Empire Strikes Back after seeing Episodes I, II, and III.
But still, most people seems to like episode 4, 5 and 6 best;p
Definatly!

๐ Yeah, I found many of Gau’s Rages quite useful too. Nevermind that he’s uncontrollable — as you’ve indicated, he can be a storehouse of power.
And talk about plotholes and lack of background information of many of the characters. At the end of the game, I still didn’t know who half of the characters were. Relm? Strago? Mog? Umaro? Gogo? Shadow, and even Locke didn’t seem to have much of a story. The only characters that did have a deeper story were Terra, Sabin and Edgar, Cyan and Celes. I knew nothing about the rest.
So, what do I do now? Are there any sidequests? Didn’t they add an extra dungeon for the Advance?
Before you answer, I’ve already done these:
– The 8 Dragons
– Getting Gogo and Umaro
– Cyan’s Nightmare
– The Ancient Castle
– Doomglaze
– Kefka’s Treasure (Fanatic’s Tower)
Also, this is my main party:
Sabin, Mog, Terra and Umaro.
Why do people never use Umaro? Equip him with Berserker Ring and Blizzard Orb, and he kills everything. He’s actually become my favorite.
He can’t dualcast Ultima. That seems to be the most popular reason, it’s not because he’s bad neccesarily, more because he’s overshadowed by everyone else and their Ultima spamming capabilities. He’s brilliant in the colosseum though.
They added a new Dragon’s Den specifically for the GBA version, you can find it on one of the lone islands at the North-west corner of the map. If I recall it’s a lone island with a singe tree on it, land the falcon on it to enter. After that there’s the Soul Shrine, a dungeon where you face around 100 enemies consecutively.
I agree with you about how overrated the Opera scene is.
I cannot believe how easy it was!
The Dragon’s Den? I never heard of it, but thanks for telling! I’ll check it out.
It’s not like I spend an insane amount of time raising the levels. At the end of the game, the time said 29:01 hours, and that doesn’t seem like a lot.
They fixed that glitch in the Advance version.
Also, Zulu, after looking at your sidequest list there are two more things you might want to consider doing. One of them is putting Shadow in your party and sleeping in inns to watch his 5 dream sequences which give in-sight into who he was before he became a ninja. The other is to put Strago in your party and visit Thamasa for a sidequest that involves receiving his best Blue spell.
In addition, there are 4 new optional Espers added to Advance: Leviathan, Gilgamesh, Diablos and err…a giant Cactuar who’s name I can’t remember. Haven’t not played the Advance version I’m not quite sure how you get them but they most likely have an in-depth walkthough for it on gamefaq.com
The game didn’t JUST come out. The game came out in 1994, fyi. Use common knowlege.
The scene was memorable to the adults here now when they were children. It’s called nostalgia. If you didn’t get it, look it up.

Nice, i gotta get me one of those.
Anyone ever glitch the SNES with realm? Using draw… on certain enemies under certain conditions gave you 99 of some of the best items in the game.

OK, that is just incredibly rude. I understand how it might mean something special to those who have been playing it for years, but to most newcomers, the scene just doesn’t hold the same merrit. For years I’ve heard people praise it, calling it the best moment in FF history, so I can’t help but feel a little disappointed.

I can’t play Advance without having mental hiccups whenever I reach anything they’ve re-translated. ๐ I still prefer the PSX port. Yeah.
I’m old. And, prone to bias ๐
I played the game when it first came out on the SNes, and while this scene impressed a lot of my friends, I thought it was an ordinary cut-scene driven sequence. I didn’t think anything special about it. It was a fun part of the game, but nothing that made me think: "OMFGWTF, I hope the next FF is like the Opera scene times 10000000!!!"
Just post anything you think a new player should know about this game when playing it the first time.
Well I went with:
Shadow:
Gogo:
Mog:
Umaro:
That party is good, Umaro attacks with the best power.
Shadow use genji gloves to make up for a lack in any catagorys he might have.
Mog with gauntlets and Dragoon boots, with good spear.
Gogo with attack, majic, and blitz, scince Gogo atomaticaly knows the spells the others use with no espers.
This party is one of the best.
Plasma-Torture — assuming your intent was to give Zulu advice and not just wax eloquent about your favorite party, you might have done better to read all the posts in the thread, not just the first one.
><
And this game had one of the most memorable moments in the ff series, (for those newcomers maybe not, since i started playing it when the only ‘console’ i had was Pc and yeah, i use emulator to play them and that was, when i’m just 14 years old in year 2002) the opera scene i really like it, Funny yet Classical, though i prefer the original very rather than the vocal version when playing the game, but when i listen to music i rather listen to vacals. ><
Zulu, is it possible you might have been biased against the opera scene before ever even making it there simply because so many people were talking it up?
And lastly, I know you’ve already finished the game, but the party breakdown in the end isn’t really going to matter. Once fully leveled, anyone can use simple attacks and regulate. Gau is versatile and he is uncontrollable, yes; but I don’t like using him past the first two thirds of the game. By that point, the power of the other characters puts his rages down a little, and all he becomes is a versatile if weak character.
Remember that in Kefka’s Tower, your first party is always going to get the most random encounters, and the other two will have to face the bosses (depending on if you go left or right at the junction). I have always gotten bored with the Tower, and packed Mog with Molulu’s charm in the first party by himself, and then spread my best 8 chars around the other parties.
Gigantuar can be encountered by killing 10 cactuars in the desert immediately south of Maranda (not in a row, the game will keep track). After this, Gigantuar will appear in the southwestern corner of the desert only. Be sure to bring Shadow throwing pinwheels. They always hit and really hurt.
In the Dragon’s Den, be sure to go back after beating the Kaiser Dragon and getting Diabolos, you may find a familiar face there. Soul Shrine will kill you hard and fast if you don’t plan for it, I highly recommend reading one of the FAQS out there for it.
Leviathan will attack the ferry boat between S.Figaro and Nikea after your first free ride. Talk to the townspeople in either place until one mentions a shadow under the water. Then he will attack.
I personally think the re translation is a mixed bag. Some things are better (Gau to Sabin: uWaooo! You good dance partner! –> uWaoo! You strong, almost as strong as Gau!) and some things are worse. (Kefka at Esper cave: I feel so anxious! –> I’ve got a bad feeling about this!) A lot of it makes more contextual sense, but some of the flair is gone. It’s not really worth going back to play the original or PS port, though.
what was up with him living in that ugly monster??? how bout a cut scene explaining that
But if you wanna keep Mog in, maybe replace Edgar or Sabin with Mog?
I remember beating Final Fantasy VI for the first time on PS from the Anthologies.
Sobin is a tank plain and simple. His blitzes are god. you can se them to save your ass so much. Plus he is a decent caster.
Cyan. SAme as Sobin. great tank though you usually want a character to do a long winded cinimatic attack while waiting for his sword tech bar to go. his quadra slam/slice attacks are one of the most usefull things in the game.
Locke you need properly equipped to use to the full. Give him a genji glove and the theif glove and bam he can steal twice and do damage each time. give him the atma weapon as he has high HP and another good weao=pon and he is a good tank plus he is a very good caster.
Terra while [hysicly weak has very strong magic and her esper thing is very usefull in boss battles.
And thats the party I recomend to use.
And the Opera scene is very good. it is the best FF tear jerker I’ve ever scene. plus the music ROCKS!
And for my ideal party, I would have to go with Sabin, Terra, Edgar, and Souske. Terra is the more useful of the two women, thanks to her esper mode. I mean, absorbing magic is fine and all, but when it comes down to it, Terra is going to save your ass before Celes.
Sabin is amazing, period. His blitzes are the things going to save your ass most in this game at all. Save for Souske’s Bushido level 7 (the name escapes me). Also, Souske is just bad ass, so it seems like a sin not to have him around, lol. And Edgar’s machines are also powerhouses when used correctly.
But everyone else has a downside. I mean, Gau, while he has great potential, his training is way to monotonus for words. Umaru, ummmm….. Setzer’s slots are too unreliable, Celes’s Runic really isn’t all that useful, Relm’s paint is just eh… Stargo’s lores work well, and really, I have not complaints about him… Locke has no real ability that can serve too much of a purpose in a boss battle. Okay, also, Shadow really doesn’t have a downside either. But Gogo… we will just go with "ummmm" again, lol. Useless he is, really. And Mog’s dances aren’t all that they could be.
So, if you want to make a perfect party, I suggest picking from
Souske, Terra, Stargo, Shadow, Edgar, or Sabin
But this game is definatley worth everything… and really, I think that Square Enix would have been better off remaking this one than Final Fantasy IV for the DS. I hope we see one soon, actually.
Like that 3-d thing they did for VI pre-VII.
As for the Opera, the sound quality is dampned in the GBA version. As well, for people used to FF7+, I have noticed a general lack of sympothy for emotional scenes in the 16-bit era. You really have to use that imagination of yours to imagine the scene yourself, as ‘described’ by the cruder 16-bit characters. As for the music, I love the Aria. I got FF6 Grand Finale just for the final track. It is a powerful peice of music.
Try to find it in the music part of the Shrine. The title is Opera "Maria and Draco" and it’s from the album "More Friends – Music From Final Fantasy – Final Fantasy Orchestra Concert in Los Angeles 2005".
Better yet, the song is actually sang in english! ^_-
Opening (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A066pT-jVQ)
Ending (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8DpUwZHW5Q)
Opera (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWPhuS8FJrE)
They basically all consist of the same scenes (some give or take a few), just with different music, but the "Opera" one actually has re-done music for the opera scene (Italian, I think). There’s also songs that are the entire opera scene (The Black Mages – Darkness and Startlight [Japanese], Tour De Japon – Opera: Maria and Draco [Japanese], and another one in English). The opera scene may not mean much to you, but man I loved it. Definitely the most memorial scene I can think of in any of the Final Fantasy’s I’ve played (though, that opening scene of on the mountain top in the first one is quite memorial as well).
As for the character’s story line, they’re all there (except Gogo* and Umaro, of course). You just have to have some kind of intelligence to see it. Sorry you’re so unintelligent that you completely missed the depth this game has.
*I’ve actually heard someone state that Gogo may actually be Daryl.
Seriously, though, am I missing something? Where did that come from, Hynad?
Mr — thanks for your thoughts. However, I’ve never bought the Gogo/Daryl theory, because Gogo is a character seen originally in FFV. So Gogo is really more of a reference, which in my eyes, greatly decreases the chances of that theory being true.

That wouldnt have been that great of a ending. I do kind of agree that the ending could have been better, but the game was amazing all the way through, the ending just needed to ‘end’ the game.
Best game ever though, probably wont ever be topped.
That ending would have been passable, but not better than the slightly disappointing ending they had. Okay, so it was overly disappointing, but what have you. The opera scene was perfect, even if everyone thinks so. Sometimes when things are over rated, people lose sight of the actual good points of things. Example, the opera scene, or (I am assuming, as I have never played the game) Final Fantasy VII in general.

It has only been topped by X and XII, in my opinion. And the way I gauge if games were worth the money I spend on them is by the ending. If the ending is good, great, etc. then it was worth it. If not… eh.
Final Fantasy VI and XII were the only games I excused from this rule.
