Edit: Oops, I guess I should have mentioned mine…
"Lament" – Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (alternately known as "Anakin’s Betrayal")
"It Can’t Be" – Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (cue present in the album track "Anakin’s Dark Deeds")
"The Immolation Scene" – Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
"Qui-Gon’s Funeral" – Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
"Lux Aeterna" – Requiem for a Dream
"After the Drop" – Medal of Honor: Frontline
"The Fallen" – Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis
"Theme from Schindler’s List" – Schindler’s List
All three songs easily elicit the heartfelt pathos and depressing sentiment of their environments, I find.
The most depressing and mournful track I’ve ever heard in my life. There’s just so much beauty packed in it. Definitely one to be played at my funeral.
"Debriefing" – Metal Gear Solid 3
A close second. However, you need to have finished MGS3 in order to feel the power of this song. For those who just want to see MGS3’s ending, here it is:

Say! Thanks for reminding me of that one! "After the Drop" is indeed a wistful composition. I’d say "Arnhem" only manages to beat it by a nose.
Mention depressing/sad and I think of these right away, that soundtrack tied in so well with the story…
No you’re fine I merely misinterpreted the topic title. 😀

Final Fantasy VIII: ‘Everything = Nothing’

I guarrantee you, it’s incredibly sad and melancholic, and sounds like a whole new composition. This > Nobuo’s original song

The DEFCON soundtrack by Introversion Software. Dowload the DEFCON demo and swipe this music now!!
"Strength and Honor" from Gladiator by Hans Zimmer
I’ve got plenty more, but I’m too lazy to list them all here – it’d probably be half my music.
Vision of Escaflowne OST 3 – Farewell
i know of many more. if there ever a poll to put together a compilation we should all contribute to it
Old Snake – Metal Gear Solid 4 (theres something kind of sad or mournful expression about that track, most notably around the 50 second mark)
The Max Payne 2 soundtrack is somewhat dark and depressing, perhaps just due to the tone of the character itself.
The Indigo Prophecy soundtrack. The game is emotional, dark and filled with depressing characters and moments.
St Mary’s Church & Jenny’s Theme – The Darkness (something just a little off about the tracks. Not sad or anything, buts theres something about it)
Promise (Reprise) – Silent Hill 2 (Again, just something about it, not sure how to describe it)
Beauty Killed the Beast 4 – King Kong (I only find this track sad or depressing because of the movie, as its from the part when hes on the ESBuilding and as the planes are coming in for their final pass, as hes near death, the music builds and he lets out his primal roar and does the whole chest smack motion…kinda shows his will to live and to not back down, even in the end)
Debriefing – Metal Gear Solid 3 (It really only works with Eva’s voiceover, but still a powerful track to go with the imagery and great voice talents)
Not sure what else I’d throw on this list, cause I really don’t know how to classify "sad" music and all. Music that creates strong emotion and usually in sad, depressing or dark parts is all I could think of. Throw on the music you hear in Rocky Balboa whenever he thinks about Adrian and Light of the Force from Return of the Jedi when Darth Vader is cremated, but for now, thats about it.
Gau’s theme, Forever Rachel FF6
Anything by To/Die/For (best songs – Crimson twins, forever, sorrow, rimed with frost)
Re-Acting by Dr.Gore2000 -found this on youtube, doesn’t get more depressing that that
Don’t Belong by Paradise Lost
Hollow by Pantera
My immortal by Evanescense
Apocolyptica has a few – Romance, Beyond Time
Can’t Smile Without You by Berry Manilo -it’ll grow on you…even if you don’t listen to that style much
Shape of my Heart by Sting
Hope you like
Happy End
A Furrow dub
Several other songs on a soundtrack, the anime is like, a really deperessing anime overall
SimCity 4 – Terrain
Super Mario 64 – Dire dire Docks
Cowboy Bebop – Road to the west
Gary Wilson – Dream(s)
Daft Punk – Nightvision
Daft Punk – Something About us
Bomberman Hero – Loom
Samurai Champloo – 2 Messages
Those are my two favorite Daft Punk songs– it’s funny because they’re so good at chill ambiance– yet they’re more popular for upbeat stuffs.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask:
This was my first Zelda experience. The songs that affect me most were as follows: Opening Sequence, Calling the Four Giants, The Progression of Clocktown (Days 1, 2, and 3), and Final Hours. Each of these songs held a sense of anxiousness that built up to the end of the game. Also great nostalgia moments for me here. The first of my heart felt moments with video game music.
StarWars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith:
This is a bit more specific, only including the track Anakin’s Betrayal when you see Anakin turn to the dark side and he’s hurting Padme. Most certainly a powerful theme for me.
Matrix Revolutions:
The last of the songs that truly make my spine tingle is Neo’s final battle with Smith. This includes Neodammerung, Why Mr. Anderson, and Spirit of the Universe. This especially includes the sequence which shows Neo’s body being carried away by the waste disposal unit in the Machine City. I love Don Davis’s work with the franchise.
So Alone, Be Sorrow (Piano version) Star Ocean: Till the End of Time for quite a while…
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=B76XMW3G
It’s the main theme from the Stone of Anamara.
Saddest one ever.
and yes the last few songs of the matrix revolutions songs were also sad.
Enya-Boadicea.
Town of Mysteries-Silent Hill Origins
Embalmed in Memory-Silent Hill Origins
Sorrowful Pity-SIREN:Blood Curse
Memory of the Waters-Silent Hill 3
Let’s see. "Sorrow" from Front Mission 3, that song is already pretty sad, but after you play through and encounter more then 3/4’s of the cast killed off tragically (especially when you play both sides of the games two plots) you are much more emotionally tied to it. They also have a very nice ending remix of the same song and is also epic and but not as sad.
What’s this? Didn’t anyone mention "Enclosure" from MGS? It’s a beautiful work, and very moving.
Kizu darake no yume wo nigiri shimete, from G Gundam (The fourth CD). It’s a pretty sad theme, especially when it picks up with the dramatic sharp rise of other instruments in the end. Anyone who saw Doman’s Brother and later his master die can tell you just how powerful the track is.
Afterwards, Clear These Tears (Namida, Nochi Hare) from the Pokemon anime. Yeah, it’s the song when Butterfree leaves. It was pretty sad, I was surprised one day during school in the morning when they reran that episode, and found so many of my friends still teary eyes from crying about that episode. O_o
"Requiem For The Gods" from Castlevania (SotN/NotM), such a lovely depressing theme, on par with "After the Drop" from Medal of Honor.
"An Epitaph to War" from the Movie Glory, when ever I hear this song or see the characters thrown into the pit, I start to choke, even start to cry when I see them charging in the climax of the movie as "Charging Fort Wagner" plays, even though it’s not a truly sad theme like An Epitaph to War, but it’s still very powerful and full of emotion. Only one thing keeps me from crying, and that’s from a memory in highschool from when I showed the movie to my class …well women love Danzel, and when he got shot towards the ending, one of the girls shouted out "On no! They Shot Danzel!" Thus this movie and music here holds a special space in my heart for both making me laugh inappropriately, and cry. Come to think of it, almost the entire soundtrack is pretty depressing …yet lovely!
From one of my favorite anime and manga is the Guyver TV series. There are two tracks that stand out that make me sad. "Despair" which is a fairly sad theme, and "Tragedy of Enzyme II". Tragedy of Enzyme II is actually a battle theme, but one used in tragic events, and it’s fairly done well. It really sticks to my head because of it’s beauty, and the horrible event in the anime when Sho and his father fight to the death with neither in control of what they are doing. "Despair" of course also stands out thanks to the fact that some great characters died while it played, such as Murikami.
"Pain" AKA Ovelia’s Worries from Final Fantasy Tactics. I love this scene, and if not for it’s pure lovely tune of pain and grief, then it’s attachment to the tragedy involving the romance between Ovelia and Delita.
"Eternal Seperation" from Code Geass. Lovely theme, and still incredibly sad. This theme actualy helped make me almost cry over the death of a character I had no love for (Rolo). This theme and another was played when our protaganist died in the end.
clint mansell – the last man (the fountain ost)
ryuichi sakamoto – solitude (tony takitani ost)
niki reiser – afrika (nowhere in africa ost)
Street Fighter 2 – Staff Roll
Chrono Cross – Star Stealing Girl/The Girl Who Stole the Stars
Those songs can make you cry even if youve never played them
oh, and Suteki da Ne. when I beat FFX for the first time, and that song was used during the credits, I started to cry…
The Road to Purgation, too. I think that music is very sad sounding.
umm… lol, I just named 3 things from FFX.
and the only other thing I can think of right now is the Love Theme from MGS4. it’s pretty, but I think it’s sad sounding, too. I have said that it’s so pretty it makes me wanna cry…(hint: I have not played MGS4. so I really know nothing about that song and its being in the game or anything.)
uh… yeah. ^__^;;
I have another one in my mind, but I can’t remember what it’s called right now.
From the movie Kung Fu Panda, the track "Oogway Ascends", and the track "Morning Mass" from the movie Breach.
Sorrow, Brothers, and Tune of Separation from Fullmetal Alchemist
For the Princess from Sailor Moon Sailor Stars
Eight Melodies From MOTHER (EarthBound Zero)
We Miss You ~Theme of Love~ from Mother 3
Jolene’s Appreciation (or something like that) From TTYD
Requiem from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Sword
Sad Song from Super Mario RPG
Sadness from Oracle of Ages/Seasons
Toad Town Ruins from Partners in Time
Mario and Peach’s Theme from Paper Mario
To Zanarkand – FFX
Celes, Terra & Coin Song – FFVI
Eyes On Me – FFVIII
Aerith & Tifa – FFVII
Garnet’s Song – FFIX
EDIT: Via Purifico (Piano collections version which is technically called "Path of Repentance" but I prefer "Via Purifico.) – That Is TRULY TRULY amazing for me. – FFX
Final Fantasy V – As I Feel, You Feel
Mario Kart DS – Credits (when you beat 50cc, 100cc, or 150cc Special/Lightning Cup. When you beat Mirror Mode, the credits music becomes way more upbeat)
Mario Party 2 – Credits (the second part of the song)
It’s less "sad" or "depressing" and more "bittersweet." Her ending theme to the first season of FMP, Karenai Hana [Never-Withering Flower] is also grandiosely bittersweet.
The Tale Told by the Wind ~Ending Theme from Heroes of Mana~ – by Yoko Shimomura (arranged on her compilation album "drammatica")
I don’t know what it is about this piece, but stylistically it reminds me very much of the somber/tender kinds of themes found in Don Bluth animated films…
Finale – by Randy Edelman (from Dragonheart)
It’s uplifting at the same time that it’s rather saddening. And you don’t even have to have seen the movie/have the associated scene in mind for it to elicit the emotions. I had the track in my playlist for years before I finally saw the movie…
With Your XXX… and With Your XXX, The Heavens… – by Taku Iwasaki (from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
The former is a little more neutral and calming. The latter, though, is quite good at tugging on the heartstrings.
The Price of Freedom – by Takeharu Ishimoto (from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII)
I actually haven’t completed the game yet, but I know what inevitable scene this track accompanies, and it’s one of those tracks that’s invigorating yet futilely sad.
Come What May – by Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman (from Moulin Rouge!)
Another pick I would consider to be bittersweet… Lyrically, it’s not really depressing at all. But the way it’s sung and composed (the film version) is beautifully melancholy.
Rydia’s Theme – by Nobuo Uematsu (from Final Fantasy IV)
Also include just about any remix/arrangement. It’s a little heavier on the "sweet" than the "bitter," but the little tinge of bitter that’s there is quality and very emotive.
Out There and God Help the Outcasts – by Alan Menken, et al. (from Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
The first is sad simply because Quasimodo sings (however optimistically) about how he longs to be a part of the everyday lives of all the hapless people he can see from his towered prison. The second gets points for being one beautifully-sung, desperate plea for salvation.
And that’s all I’ll throw in for now. I must say, I’ve got to agree on a lot of the previous mentions, especially those from the Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy series, as well as some of the John Williams scores…

Dawn of Mana – An Unbreakable Heart
Seiken Densetsu 3 – Long Goodbye
Kevin Kendle: Tarot (Mind, Body & Soul) – Strength (The best sad music in all "New Age" music!) (Of course, it does sound majestic, which is why that love conquers all.)
"Eva’s Reminiscence" ~ Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
"Pool of Tears", "Castle Keep" & "Herbacious Border" ~ music in those levels of American McGee’s Alice
"People of the North Pole", "Someday the Dream Will End", "Suteki Da Ne" ~ Final Fantasy X (Especially the first one; Kimarhi’s fight with his brothers really struck a chord with me, to my surprise)
"Where I Belong" ~ Final Fantasy VIII
"Memory of that Day", "Passing Sorrow", "Loss of Me" ~ Final Fantasy IX
"Memories" ~ Final Fantasy Tactics (beautiful song from a beautiful soundtrack)
"Can’t Say Good-bye To Yesterday" ~ Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
"Night Requiem" ~ Legend of Legaia
"Memory II", "Memories of Aya and Eve", "Femme Fatales" ~ Parasite Eve
Mmmm…yes.
I went through the entire game, and my eyes were watering at the end, but when that mournful singing came on… I just lost it.
Also, I can’t wait to hear the track that plays during the battle at Hogwarts during the second Deathly Hallows movie. It is going to be EPIC! 😀
I’ll be back with more once I have found them… tomorrow 😉
1. ICARO -Piano Arrangement- – Shadow Hearts 2
–>Was like the song of your "last moments"
2. Getsurenka (Love Moon Flower) – Shadow Hearts 2
–>The ending theme for SH2, the lyric tells about unrequited love and was wrote very bittersweet
3. Living with Determination – Persona 3
–>It gives me the feeling of "even struggling seems futile, I still stand forward and smile"
4. Suteki Da Ne – Final Fantasy X
–>As you follow the story of Tidus and Yuna, this song is a tear-jerker for me. Moreover listening to Ending Theme~Yuna’s Monologue~Suteki Da Ne will instantly put me into sadness
5. Eternity : Memories of Light Waves – FFX-2
–>Just somehow relaxing, gives me the reminisce feeling
6. Theme of Love "Piano Version" – FFIV
–>Simply beautiful yet sad at the same time

–>Seems hollow and hopeless
8. "Reset" ~"Thank You" Version~ – Okami
When Amaterasu was defeated by Yami, Issun (who said that he’s not going to help Amaterasu anymore), made sketches and spread it throughout the land, saying that Amaterasu is a goddess-wolf. Making people remembers the wonder she brought upon them, and then they pray for Amaterasu’s safe and believe that through pain and sadness, The Miracles of God truly exist
-Let the Right One In (the whole soundtrack has that "mournful and sad" vibe, but Eli’s Theme, Then We Are Together, Eli Bleeds and Going Home stand out in my mind)
-Pan’s Labyrinth (any tracks with the primary hymn/main theme in it)
-Final Fantasy (tracks like Anxious Heart, Find Your Way, To Zanarkand, etc.)
-Silent Hill (This is a must include for sure)
-Resident Evil (the earlier ones like 1 and 2 have some dark and moody music)
-In Bruges (the score of this movie has a depressing and mournful vibe which fits the movie)
-Other games like the Siren series
Just some off the top of my head.
That and the main title theme from "The Corruptor," composed by Carter Burwell — http://www.thebodyinc.net/audio/Corruptor_Audio/The_Corruptor.mp3. This song has a mesmerizing mix of modern techno beats – NOT dance – with traditional Chinese instrumentation including a truly stirring piece with the erhu. Please take a listen to both! ^_^
~ M ~
EDIT: Sorry! I forgot to mention that "Truth of Resolution" is from the game "Onimusha 2:Samurai’s Destiny," mm! Ahh, such a great score. If the orchestral arrangement of the soundtrack has not been uploaded, I think I will do that later on, mm!

No original soundtrack in any game can beat Mary Elizabeth McGlynn paired with Akira Yamaoka talent in Room Of Angel projecting a sad life of Walter Sullivan in soul-stirring lyrics.
Homecoming-Akira Yamaoka, Silent Hill Homecoming
Returning to hometown as Alex Shepherd simply leaves player disturbed by the haunting silence in Shepherd’s Glenn and the music itself further saddens the players when nobody welcomes pitiful Alex home from a war.
Ritual, Siren Blood Curse
It feels like your soul slowly leaving your body when you hear this track eerie piano rhythm and strong vocals leaving one feeling helpless and despair,as if we are trapped in Hanuda Village.
This somehow reminds me alot about Iwasaku Taku’s music.
Songs Not from games:
Mozart’s piece he composed for his father’s funeral. The same song was in the movie zardoz, but it was also in others.
I can’t stand to listen to it because its depressing, and it reminds me of those movies.
A lot of radiohead’s music is overly depressing.
Games:
Breath of fire 2 musical pieces:

Chrono Trigger OST- Sealed Gate – YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znTWyMl-FVI) Sealed gate, amongst my top most depressing themes of games. It represents a world without hope, and doctor balthazar has gone mad because the world was in ruin and he couldn’t stand it.
The Day the World Revived: Chrono Trigger Music – YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFjhnaOiV1c) This song plays if you die.It is so effective, that it effects me as i write this.It also plays in once scene and represents that the world doesn’t change and things only grow worse and people cease to exist. It is incredibly bleak.
Epilogue to Good Friends: Chrono Trigger Music – YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8xInb9wmRI) Its sad only because its bittersweet. It ends in such a way that says:Thank you for coming, the game has ended and everyone lives happy ever after, and its just a single chord like a music box but its so effective.
Suikoden 2
Suikoden 2 – Reminiscence – The Friends – Riou & Jowy – YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kLSTvCI3u0) This plays in several moments. It gets to me because this plays when the empire is defeated and jowy realizes that he lost and he might be executed, and is dying from using the runestone.I feel sorry for jowy.
FF4:This one has some cheesy but it works
Final Fantasy IV Music – Melody of Lute – YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krROSpAzDq4) melody of a lute.I kind of felt sorry for edward, even if he is a spoony bard
FF9:this one has a few pieces i find sad
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ai4mbIP4vbM:This one is really sad because it feels like all is lost and not much hope. Its also a pretty song.
Final Fantasy IX Music – Nobuo Uematsu – Burmecia Kingdom – YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=konP5NLKUOg) I find this one one of the saddest tunes. Its raining and its like saying:Why? why did you come in and kill our people? we didn’t even fight back but you slaughtered our people and destroyed or beautiful city.I find it a quite nice tune to listen to as well.
Huge Opeth fan. Katatonia is also good for slapping you across the face with some depressive stuff!
There’s also: Brooks Was Here and So Was Red (both from The Shawshank Redemption), There Was Snow (The Horse Whisperer), the main theme from Road to Perdition, a lot of tracks in Angels in America…
Aside from that, I would recommend:
Mychael Danna – Tsimtsum, I’m Ready Now, Back to the World, The Second Story (Life of Pi), and Finale (The Ice Storm)
Ennio Morricone – The Return (Days of Heaven)
John Williams – Stored Memories and Monica’s Theme, The Reunion (A.I. Artificial Intelligence)
Howard Shore – The Journey to the Grey Heavens (The Return of the King)
Hans Zimmer – The Way of the Sword, A Small Measure of Peace (The Last Samurai)
Abel Korzeniowski – Boat to Africa (Penny Dreadful – it appears on the soundtrack album for Season 3, but this cue is actually from the final scene of Season 2)
James Horner has a lot of them too, so much that I would have to do a long research only to find my favorite ones 😉
