I would say for me Neo-Geo and Street Fighter series had some of finest music. Off course there are others. But it all depends on the mode and what is your perspective of music.

Thats cool, I played Soul Reaver a long time ago. The soundtrack is actually alright.

Final Fantasy XII with the new composer is my favourite game soundtrack…it just covers so many types of music with a variety of dynamics and yet still keeps an essence of the previous games.

What’s the soundtrack like for FF X? Just bought the game and was wondering whether it is thought highly of compared to the rest of the series…

FFX has a pretty decent soundtrack… it fits well with the game, but there are only a select few tracks that manage to be memorable.

Managed to hear previews of FF X on I Tunes though so far I much prefer FF XII as its much more orchestral whereas X seems to use a lot of electronic music…as a fan of classical music FF XII appealS to me more though I do like the piano theme from FF X ‘Zanarkland’.

Yeah, "To Zanarkand" is easily one of my favorite tracks in the game.

Noriyuki Asakura did great scores for the Tenchu and Way of the Samurai games. I’d say those are the best. The second best, in my opinion, is either Loz:Ocarina of Time or LoZ:Majora’s Mask.

I’m guessing that "games with best music to listen to during general life" is the context and I’m sticking to it.

"Morrowind." I sleep to this, I breath to this, I embrace this. Jeremy Soule became a demi-god because of his Morrowind soundtrack.

"Vagrant Story." It’s very atmospheric and I enjoy listening to it time to time.

"Shadow Of The Colossus." Good music all around, especially "The Farthest Land Reprise."

"Final Fantasy 10." A happy, upbeat soundtrack. I enjoy listening to it doing whatever.

"Stronghold." Come on, medieval music! Great stuff here..

"Battle Realms." It has a surprisingly (in the sense I had forgotten) good ambient soundtrack.

Overall, Morrowind beats them all; hands down.

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 has hands down some of the best video game music I’ve ever heard.

I’ll make a proper list later. Its 4AM and I can’t really think of much.

I admit that the FF series does have good music, but to be honest I don’t even have a single song from any of the games(maybe the battle theme from FF7). Well, I think the game with best music is probably MGS 2. FTW

Instead of my old favorites, we’ll try Shadow of the Colossus. Subdued, but at least it fit the game. Also Digital Devil Saga had some very unorthodox rock/synth tunes. A change from the dramatic flair of ensemble strings and abrasive timpani.

5. Dark Chronicle – it had very soothing melodies especially since half the time your in dungeons, the music makes up for those boring parts of the game yay!

4. Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 – great and nostalgic music =) every part of kingdom hearts is great! disney + square-enix = great!

3. Golden Sun 1 & 2 – these being on GBA don’t even hinder what its OST’s bring out. It’s so moving, gentle, heartwarming and heart pumping all at once!

2. Ragnarok Online – Hehe. Ragnarok Online, everyone has played it at one point in thier lives and I bet everyone would know the theme to prontera or that really soothing melody in Al De Baran. so many bgm’s and surprisingly you will remember alot of them =).

1. Final Fantasy IX – my favorite OST! I love how nobuo used an array of things for new pieces, both synthesiser and orchestral arrangements were perfect =). Those one-timer songs in the game are so epic and captivating, and others are so moving. i love it =)

Xenosaga, despite not being one of my preferred games, has an amazing soundtrack.

Drakengard 2’s soundtrack was a vast improvement over the first game, beautiful orchestrated tracks.

Shadow of the Colossus has one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard, as the songs match the mood of each fight perfectly.

I’d agree with the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack comment, but considering it’s all just remixed music I cant say much, though the new main theme that plays through most of the modes of gameplay is one of the most beautiful and inspiring songs I’ve heard in ages. A beautiful blend of choir, violin, percussion and guitar. Always a good mix.

The Ace Combat series, especially 4 through 6 and Zero, have some of my favorite tracks.

That’s not true. Soul reaver & soul reaver 2 to me has the best BGM ever. Defiance & Soul Reaver uses the same BGM, but SR2 is different. But everyone like different music, especially when it comes to game music. But I would like to add a few to his list.

Super Mario – doesn’t matter which one, all are great
Banjo Kazooie – very catchy
Banjo Tooie – also very very catchy
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – integrated playing music for the first time to me
Turok 2 – set the atmosphere very well
Duke Nukem – midi metal (listen to the Megadeth version, is the best thing to happen to the world, kinda…)
Kirby Superstar – the best Kirby game ever… music was really really good too
Soul Reaver – its just good, end of story
Baldur’s Gate 1, and 2 – oof, cant even describe the power put into these game’s soundtracks
Neverwinter Nights – perfect atmosphere setter, and just great to listen to
Elder Scrolls 3 and 4 – just plain good music
Half-Life 1 and 2 – i love Valve to death for this music
Call of Duty – all of them are very unique and interesting in the way the music added to the feel of the game
Shadow of the Colossus – some of the best scores here ever
Fable – Danny Elfman composed the shit out of that main score, every song in there is pure gold and very fitting
Halo 1, 2, and 3 – hey did just a plain good job
Gears of War – the right music for the right time
Bioshock – very little music, but the music that you did hear, stood out immensely

Currently i’m obsessed with Twilight Princess, which is just plain awesome in every way

Onimusha has some very mood setting music and it’s very soothing to listen to that music.
But my favorite VG music has to be Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. That boss music is flippin’ awesome. It could easily be turned into a heavy metal song with wailing guitars and whatnot.

Megaman X Series.. especially the X4 theme 😀 I really want that to be watched in anime series.. 🙂

It’s a korean MMORPG and I know what you think when I say this but
this game really spent all the money on the OST.

Of course, FF series can’t be forgotten, and… maybe I would say pokemon lol (they made some ost everlasting in the brain even with the poor quality on which they were limited)

Actually 651 tracks is a pretty small list compared to mostly people here who collect music from their favorite games, so yeah, its not THAT crazy.

"Smash Brothers" series is a bunch of remixes from other games, actually you are NOT listening to "Smash Brothers" music, just music from other games.

There are some nice remixes thought, but actually I think the tracks are not enjoyable to listen, are mostly just to play (like those in Pump it UP), a song that I CANT enjoy like music, its not music (personal opinion).

But from "Smash Brothers", I like only the original game tracks and melee, brawl sucked really hard.

Thats why maybe you didn’t see that in their list, Smash music is not the big deal actually, too much Japanese stuff involved (in a stereotyped way).

Another great OST would be Smash Bros Brawl. It has a beautiful remake of classic Donkey Kong, Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, ect… themes.

And the Touhou franchise is riddled with great music. If I compiled all the Touhou theme songs and put them in a hat, I’d have a 95% of pulling out something I love.

I was recently replaying Megaman Zero Collection for DS and realized I wanna know who did the great music. Turns out it’s III which is a unit at Inti Creates’s sound division.
They’re responsible for MGM Zero 1~4 and Megaman ZX/Advent, plus a couple more.

I’ve never looked it in that way…

But pretty much think the same as you do.

Although when putting the music in context. VIII pales compared to VII.

VIII music can be so anticlimatic some times.

I remember the Jazz Jackrabbit games had amazing music for their time! I used to enter a level and wait till the music loops a couple of times and then start playing.

I remember the Jazz Jackrabbit games had amazing music for their time! I used to enter a level and wait till the music loops a couple of times and then start playing.

I don’t remember much about the first game, but Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was amazing! I agree, the music was pretty prime (and it still is imho). Every level in that game was epic!

My favorite would have to be Grandia II, especially since it’s my all-time favorite game. Although, I’ve yet to play the other Grandia games.
My next favorite would have to be Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Very rich and full of variety.
I personally really like the Final Fantasy X soundtrack.
I also like several of the Metroid soundtracks, such as Super Metroid and the Metroid Prime games.
Secret of Mana and Legend of Mana rang well with me, too.

There are several more, but I can’t really remember all the games I’ve ever played.

i would take forever to list them all, but my personal favorites in no particular order are…

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories (PS2)
Ape Escape (PS1)
Trampoline Terror! (Sega Genesis/Megadrive)
Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time (PS2)

Echochrome and Echochrome II for a start.

For me:
Sonic the Hedgehog 2006
Super Mario 64, mainly for its recognizability and simplicity
FF7, and FF7: Crisis Core
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
The Lost Odyssey
And Armored Core 1 for its pure badassness.

I too only ever really played Jazz JackRabbit 2, but I have its soundtrack and it is indeed pretty hot. I wouldn’t dare rate it as one of my favourite soundtracks though.

A lot of indie games have good music, and nobody on these forums seems to have touched on that before from what I can see. Everyone go look up Cave Story, this seems the sort of community that could appreciate it, or at least its soundtrack.

I love the "Requiem for a Tower" track that plays with the auto-play movie on the LotR: Return of the King disc.

Also love the "escape sequence" music in the Metroid series. My four year old has been "singing" that non-stop for days…

Not really a game theme that.

Metroid’s escape sequence theme is indeed good, though.

Best game I’ve ever played hands down with one of the best soundtracks ever composed.

– Simcity series (especially Simcity 3000, which is downloadable freely from the official website)

– Metal Gear Solid series (REALLY recommended)
– Timesplitters series (especially Timesplitters 2)

Mario Kart 8 (incredible orchestra, this one deserves my approval)
Super Mario 3D World (the music is very well done)
SSBM/SSBB (compilation of songs and remixes)
Super Robot Wars* (nothing to say about that one, but hearing songs from my some of my favorite Mecha TV shows makes me happy)
Sonic the Hedgehog* (Unleashed, Generations and All-Stars Racing Transformed + Sonic the Hedgehog for the genesis)
Mario & Sonic series* (those games have electronic style remixes of the classic music from the Mario and Sonic franchise, of course some songs are not remixes)
Guacamelee!* (surprisingly, the music in this game is extremely well done)
Mega Man 2* (only the 1st Dr. Willy Stage theme)
Legend of Zelda* (Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword)

Definitely the Genso Suikoden series. It has countless masterpieces.
