Apparently the PS3 version as better loading, less pop up, and better anti aliasing while the 360 version has more vibrant colors.
"For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in.
While GTA IV is pushing the PS3 and 360 to the limit, it also runs amazingly well. Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in, but it actually runs better than I expected.
The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. Don’t worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don’t occur very often."
If you like GTA then it looks like you can’t go wrong with either version. Now all we need to know is what this episodic content is for the 360.
or some such!
i am in absolute shock!
grand theft auto and quality, these two normally do not go hand in hand!
I agree.
Then again, that isn’t to say that I don’t think Rockstar won’t deliver the goods. I really can’t wait until I get my mitts on this. A day before release no less!.
As for the notes, I agree with Prak. There are some "best game EVA!!!" reviews for games every few months. Give the game a few weeks and you’ll see players figuring out more flaws then were sited in the many "BEST FRICKIN THING SINCE THE MAN WALKED ON THE MOON! ZOMG!!!:O" reviews.
I don’t really think that’s a fair statement. From what’s been said, it would seem that neither version has any real graphical flaws unless you consider anything less than perfect photorealism to be substandard, in which case you’d be insane. It’s just a case of each version having its own unique strengths over the other. If you own both consoles and have a huge 1080p TV that’ll show the differences clearly, you’d probably be better off with the PS3 version, whereas someone with a smaller TV would likely never see a notable difference, and therefore would probably give the edge to the 360 version for its DLC.
It is a fair statement, since the better loading, less pop up, and better anti aliasing are things you can easily notice even on regular CRT screens.
I’m not saying the 360 version isn’t good. I’m just saying that since I have both systems, I’m going to pick the version that is graphically superior. And I already stated that I don’t really care for the DLC.
The loading is essentially a non-issue. If an infrequent load takes a few seconds longer on the 360, that’s hardly a major point. The pop-in is just a matter of textures loading more slowly, not entire building appearing out of thin air a block from your current position. Not exactly a deal-breaker, especially if you’re in it to play a game instead of looking at all the pretty scenery when most people would be hauling ass and shooting stuff. As for the anti-aliasing, that is the big advantage for the PS3 version, but you have absolutely no basis for claiming the difference would be just as big on a CRT.

And I’m not trying to talk you out of anything. Just clarifying for the sake of more hapless people who might otherwise never see things described as clearly as I’ve done.

Now I don’t know your basis for that texture loading you talked about, but as you can see, IGN is quite clear about it.
As for the anti-aliasing issue, on a HDTV, if the anti-aliasing is bad, you’ll get jagged edges and blurry details. While the jagged edges aren’t really noticeable on CRT TVs, the blurriness is. I’ve seen the difference in the past in games like PGR3 and FF XII, both running on a regular CRT tv and having (!!!) slight jagged edges (in FF XII, you could fix that by turning on the filter option) and blurryness. Even if the issue isn’t a deal breaker like you said, and won’t be noticed by most people, I still had to say it can be noticed if you look for it.
You might find this interesting. Here’s the first real comparison of the two versions (http://kotaku.com/384422/which-version-of-gta-iv-should-you-buy-we-compare-the-ps3-and-360-versions). I’m not going to hold that as absolute truth until a concensus develops, but it is interesting.
You cock! I want my copy now!
Well if nsb is right then the 360 only has two more episodes, hardly worth the money microsoft spent on it if you ask me. The 360 controller is pretty bad tbh, the ps3 one is way more comfortable.
And as for the 360 pad, it’s much less cramped and good for people with larger hands; people like, y’know, adults.
Nah my hands are about the same size as anybody elses.
The fact is that different people will naturally find different pads more comfortable. Your personal dislike of the pad does not make it bad, just like the fact that I and numerous others dislike the dualshock does not make it bad.
No, I got the potshot, my post wasn’t meant to be serious. You’re getting a lot nicer do you know that prak ๐
Who cares if it’s worth the money Micro$oft spent on it? At the end of the day, the 360 version will be a bigger game. A bigger game with more content is worth a few minor technical details… as annoying as the pop-ins are (but that’s been a problem in every 3d GTA game).
Also, be aware that as of yet no one knows what the content will have, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s rather arbitrary.
Also, I highly doubt the DCL will add 15 hours of gameplay, when the original run of the game is supposed to be around 30-40 hours if you don’t free roam.
As a PS3 owner, I think the 360 controllers is way more comfortable then the PlayStation controllers, imo. As for the downloadable content, extra episodes or maps can be worth it if it means several extra hours of game play for just a few bucks.
Ha, i wouldnt do that
Hitmeup 2, methinks im getting it 2nite at 12am, wallyworld has per their electronics dept.
Not that im a huge fan of the series, but going w/ friend who is and im wearing out Medal of Honnor online in desperate need of a new game.
After viewing about 4 video reviews and reading up a lot on it, I have a feeling the gameplay won’t get stale. Besides the massive single player immersion, the multiplayer looks very promising. I plan on playing Cops ‘n’ Robbers, Team Deathmatch, and Free Mode the most, though Free Mode will most likely be with friends only.
In the city, I really can’t wait to see the many mini-games. The comedy club looks promising and the strip club should be a good laugh. I also read the drunk driving is crazy and I can’t wait to try that. All in all though, first thing I will do is mess with pedestrians and checking out the Euphoria engine. I’m really excited for this game.
I was expecting prak to post something like that lol.
I’m too broke to buy it for the next month or so ;_;
I swear, if anyone bitches about having to pay for WotLK, i’ll slap them.
Still, WoW has its fair share of shortcomings. I wouldn’t call it the best game in the world, but it’s definately the best value for money.

if you’re referring to gta 4 you use your phone to go to multiplayer, but you should probably save first.
i was up horrifically early to buy this game, and i’ve been playing it for about 12 hours straight and its pretty awesome. the cover system works well and the euphoria engine makes killing pedestrians disturbingly satisfying (i especially like shooting them down stairs and laughing as they roll).
only problem was that it took me about 1 hour to take a corner without spinning out of control, not sure why they had to mess with the driving, but i got used to it eventually.
its also nice to see its as hilarious as the rest of the games, which is nice.
$15/month
…granted that some of that goes to server maintanence but I’m sure it also goes to funding teams for patching. Things like the last Diablo II patch show off what amazing effort Blizzard occasionally goes through for their fans, though.

I meant ‘free’ as in not retail, not free as in beer.
I mean, when Burning Crusade first came out, I was pissed at spending another $60 on a game I bought for $50 in the first place and pay $15 a month for – until I realised BC added so much it may as well have been a full-blown sequel.
The 2.X patches (and the 1.X patches before them) might not add as much, but they’re of equal quality. I think Quel’Danas is one of the best designed areas in Azeroth.
EDIT SLIGHTLY ON TOPIC: I’ll probably be picking up GTA4 tomorrow, thanks to a trade-in deal at JB Hi-Fi… assuming they have any copies left. Fingers crossed.
I love logging in and doing my dailies and easily making 150-200 gold in an hour.
ON TOPIC: Doubt I’ll get GTA4.
"Pushing the PS3 to the limit"? Does anyone really believe that? It’s only been out for about a year.. I doubt any of the developers are using it to anywhere near its full capability yet.
2: Ignoring the fact that the 360’s situation is pretty much the same isn’t cool. It’s like you’re trying to say "zomg PS3 si teh ubar sistem and 360 dusn’t compair" or some other fanboy bullshit.
Prak, I just don’t know you anymore. lol.
Click ‘listen now’ at the top and wait until Jack Thompson calls up around 7 minutes.
It’s hilarious, as always.
They need to realise it’s the parent’s fault, not the game industry’s. But that’s America now. Ban everything not suitable for children.
My greatest fear: a repeat of what happened with Grand Theft Auto III when I bought it on the Xbox, and GTA San Andreas when I got it on the PS2 – aka, complete boredom and frustration after an hour or so playing.
This did not happen.
I just turned my Xbox off after a 7 hour play session. I was completely drawn into the story – hell, for the first couple of hours I even ‘roleplayed’ Niko (not stealing cars, not beating up people for cash, not running from cops ’cause fun). The characters are interesting and well written, and the game is just…awesome.
Only con so far? I don’t think that i’m ever going to finish Lost Odyssey now.
EDIT: Before the inevitable BUT THE PS3 VERSION LOOKS BETTER, I think they both look better in different ways. The Xbox 360 version is slightly sharper and the textures are slightly clearer, while the PS3 version has better anti-aliasing which gives the city a softer look. It’s seriously personal preference. Personally i’m the sort of person who turned off smoothing in SSBB, so the 720p sharper 360 version appealed more to me than the 630p AA PS3 version.
Also I just finished the story. I’m going to do it again with different choices.
Paedo, I noticed it too. What I did was max the contrast, put the brightness at 80-85%, and tweaked the saturation.
Now I’m really confused. The back of my game case says 720p, 1080i & 1080p. What did I miss?
Where’d you get 640? I also thought it was 630. Oh well, that’s irrelevant.
The reason the PS3 seems to look smoother (you and raiden are using sharper in different ways I think?) is that, even at a lower resolution, the increased ant-aliasing in the PS3 version makes up for it. Of course, given the fact that color wise the PS3 verison is darker (hence brightness issues), I think the 360 outweighs it but I’m very biased. ^^
Marvin, apparently people have discovered that most games don’t actually run at what they advertise to run at. Halo 3 and GTA4 are a couple examples – they actually run at smaller resoltuion (630-720) and then are upscaled to 1080. I don’t know how they discovered it or why it matters, though.
In Halo 3’s case, someone actually counted the fucking pixels using the jagged edge on a 1080p huge TV using the assault rifle.
I assume someone did something equally retarded with GTA4.
And if we’re talking about games that run on low res, did ya know CoD4 runs on 600p?
Go R*…
I really need to get the Orange Box. However I’ve also been overwelmed with several games at the same time. My companion cube will have to wait.
Back to the topic, I’m enjoying GTA4. There are so many little things that make this game so loveable. I’ve had one freeze up when it was trying to load the game, but I think that new patch took care of it.
Yes. Yes you do.
So are you suggesting that my companion cube can’t wait? I held off on getting it because I was waiting for a patch for the PS3 version to fix the bugs, which they did come out with in March, but I’ve been procrastinating.
Fuck Portal…
Bioshock is the only one I liked.
Aside from older ones like Doom and Heretic and Wolfenstein like way old back when I was like 4 or 5
I also hate what are known as Western RPGs.
I understand some of the games like Mass Effect and such are good but I just can’t get into them.
I am more of an action jackson man myself.
Who’s badmouthing? I am badtyping. ๐
are you guys satisfied with the driving engine? i don’t think i am…
that’s seriously about the only bad thing i can say about the game right about now though. if you ask me, ign’s 10/10 was well deserved.
The driving is very different, yes, but different for the better imo.
Oh at at the moment I’ve only gotten to the second (top) island. Taking it slow. ๐
As far as gameplay is concerned, I really can’t think of anything to complain about. Everything works about as well as I could want it to, at least so far as I’ve played, with the single exception of camera control. I feel like it should makes more automatic adjustments than it does. I’ll probably get the hang of working the camera constantly after I’ve played it some more, but it’s a bit irritating at this point when I’m trying to get a car turned around and have to take it laboriously slowly because I’m having a hard time seeing what I might run into half a second later.
On a side note, this game has actually accomplished something I never EVER thought possible. I’m actually finding myself obeying the traffic laws as often as not, just because it feels novel that I can. I suspect it probably isn’t quite as easy to control your speed in the PS3 version as the 360’s triggers make it, so a lot of you may not have any idea what I’m talking about.
And speaking of differences between the consoles, what the hell is anyone doing poking at any sort of graphical issues? The game is beautiful. End of story. The pop-in I’ve seen (which isn’t much) is limited to unimportant building textures and tall grass. Everything has a crisp look to it that stronger anti-aliasing would blur, which I would actually fault the PS3 version for (being the sort, like Raidenex, who turned off smoothing in SSBB) but that comes down to personal taste. As far as I can tell, there is no basis whatsoever for saying either version looks better than the other.
Also, it’s nice to have a main character who is not a complete cunt for once.
The game runs at a smoother frame-rate on the PS3, and although you think the pop-ins are not annoying (to which I agree) the fact still stands that there are less of them on the PS3. As for the controls, having the chance to play it on both systems, I can say the triggers on the PS3 work just as good as on the 360.
I mentioned these little differences because I wanted to take the version that had the least flaws. Having both systems, I think it is justified that I would take that approach. But I would have been content no matter what version I had chose, since no matter those small details, the game is just marvelous.
Anyway, as far as I’m concerned, a little bit more barely-noticeable pop-in is an easy trade for sharper textures. In a nutshell, I wouldn’t call either version more flawed than the other, and I actually like the look of the 360 version more because of its clarity.
Just sayin’. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/nine_fenrir/robot%20faces/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif
As for the other half of your comment, where did you get the chance to compare both versions side by side? Just wondering…
Marvin, as I mentioned a couple of times already, I only worried about those minor differences because I needed to choose which version of the game I was going to take.
Keep in mind that I didn’t say yet what version I went for. ๐
The texture quality is a bit better on the 360, there’s no denying it. Not that’s it really that worse on the PS3. You’re not likely to notice the difference if you don’t play on a really big set.
I compared both games at my dad’s place using my 32" 1080p Sharp LCD and again both on a 51" 1080i Toshiba rear projection TV. They both looked as good on both sets as far as textures goes. The PS3 had darker colors that I thought made the game look more realistic in tone, while the 360 had brighter colors that really looked amazing when at dawn or dusk) The only time I could notice a real difference as far as textures go was during some close up of the faces during some cut-scenes. And that was only noticeable on the 51".
Then I plugged everything side by side using my Aquos and my dad’s 32" Samsung and we both played with our respective copy of the game. And it was easy to notice the difference in frame rate (especially at high speed in the Algonquin part of the city… I didn’t have access to the helicopters at the time).
Again, not telling what version I actually own. ๐ (which should be obvious, now that it’s the second time I tease it. )
It all just stinks of a fanboy type argument that really makes me rethink the industry I want to get into eventually. Jusy enjoy the game.
I took it for the 360 mainly because more friends of mine are going to play online on it, and I’ll give it a try with the free month of Live bundled with it and see if I’ll give the whole online gaming on Live a go or not.
I was going to buy it for the PS3 at first, but some friends of mine convinced me to get it for the 360. I don’t regret my choice, but the details I pointed out are there and noticeable, even if they don’t make the game any less enjoyable on the 360.
So that "fanboy type argument" thing is moot as far as I’m concerned.
…
But what I mean is that he implied that the argument about the versions’ differences is a fanboy one, while not being explicit about who he was replying to. Since I’m one of the people who mentioned the differences between both version, I thought he was referring to me.
It all just stinks of a fanboy type argument that really makes me rethink the industry I want to get into eventually. Jusy enjoy the game.
