Koh Ohtani is one of my favorites Soundtracks Composers. So I decided to create this post, since there are some Soundtracks I don’t have of him, and some of these were really difficult to find.
I added, also, singles and drama cds from the anime he as done the music, at least if someone was looking for everything related to a certain anime everything is here. I have more Koh Otani soundtracks, but at least these will make the magic.
They are in order of year/release….
Have fun for now!!!

Some files will have Password, and it is their own Catalogue Number.
I will ignore posts asking for password and surelly ban anyone who PM me about it.

on the city hunter albums, it was the frist work of Koh Otani as "Koh Otani Project" in cooperation with Tatsumi Yano.

Ok…Koh is one of my favorite composers; he reached the top of his career with the "Wanderer and the colossus" soundtrack and the heart breaking nostalgia, angst inspired soundtracks for "Haibane Renmei" [charcoal feather federation] [if you havent seen this anime…go see it you might find your next religion there]

I opened this account just to ask one question. Is there a soundtrack for Sky Odyssey (PS2)? I know Kotani Otani composed the soundtrack and I absolutely love it. I’ve been tying to find a soundtrack for that game for years now to no avail. I think maybe a soundtrack was never released since it wasn’t such a popular game. Seeing that you guys have about every Koh Otani soundtrack in existence I presume you should know if there is a soundtrack or not and if there was one then you would know where to find it.

the ost by itself may not be his greatest, but combined with the aesthetic beauty and adventure of shadow of the colossus, it really makes for a great experience.

morrigan, I’m surprised you’re a fan of �tani and you don’t like Shadow of the Colossus… I’ve known his work for 15 years and my two favorites of his are Haibane Renmei and Shadow — both of which I regularly play as ambient music when I’m going to bed (they’re actually probably the albums I play most when I’m going to sleep.)

Anyway– thanks for Haibane’s OST2, can you believe I actually never knew this one existed?! And it’s fantastic… Same melodies as usual, but great arranged versions (mandolin, wow!)… I’ll be sure to add it to tonight’s playlist!
Do you have any other albums in the vein of Haibane and Shadow to recommend? I’m a bit scared at the idea of downloading all of the albums in your list.

Also, I may have a few �tani albums you don’t have. Do you want me to upload any?

I was a bit disappointed that the Queen Millennia Symphonic Suite album was being discussed so much, but no copy can be found online. In addition to Tartiflette, I heard of another person who has the LP, but after I dropped him an e-mail, he told me he wasn’t willing to share it online. Aww 🙁

The zune software somehow found the track names in its databse even though the zunes themselves don’t support the display of Japanese characters. Since t has Koh Ohtani I felt that it should be here 😉

My first experience with Koh Ohtani’s works was the Shadow of the Colossus OST, which I enjoyed immensely. I thought I saw a few people say they really liked Birdy the Mighty so I downloaded both soundtracks, listened through them, but didn’t quite enjoy them. It wasn’t really the style I was looking for. Anyone have any suggestions for which of his scores to try next in the same vein as Shadow of the Colossus?

Shadow of the colossus is not his best work at all. at least for me. He has is own style. If you did not liked birdy the mighty soundtracks, then you wont like Koh Ohtani at all.

For me it’s a toss up between the first volume for Outlaw Star and Shadow of the Colossus. His score for Gundam Wing still rocks, however; especially the purely orchestral pieces.

Well… About Shadow Of Colossus. Its reasonable. Is considered by a lot of people his BEST work but its very common to say this (or hear it). Just think that a lot of them never heard Gunslinger Girl OST, Shakugan No Shana III or Decode, for ex. If we talk about gaming music, no doubt it has a unique style BUT putting all together, SOC is a great OST but for me, not his best.

Maybe Outlaw Stars, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 or Gunslinger (prob my fav.) will rank as his best works FOR ME, but on the other hand you cant forget that Gundam works… Its very hard only say three works so imagine to only name one as his best xD. Crazy, i know.

PD: And still i didnt hear Bronze U^^.

Yes. Shadow of collosus is not that great of soundtrack. I mean, we have heard major better from him.
Gundam Works are cool, yes. But maybe teh soundtracks from him that really marked me are the ones I see the best of his work at this day.
For me the bes of him is (not in order fo preference):
1 – Darkstalkers – Vampire Hunter The Animated Series (need to rip some missing tracks)
This one was incredibly gorgeous. This is where I sensed that he could work on a beat’em’up game. The soundtrack is incredibly good structured for something like… a fight game. And the Suposed Character themes-….. my god. are just a freaking wonder.
Attention that I am fan of Darkstalkers, so I know in 2x what I am tlaking about. XD
2 – Outlaw Star
The anime for the time it wa smade, could had a better animation, but to be honest, I love that anime, and the music was thething that kept this anime all bumpy and all the way addictive to follow. I still remeber I marvelous I was getting everytime a new tracks made his apearance. First time Aisha transforms in her real self, was when I was marked by the music. Koh Ohtani own Style was really teh best I could see in this anime, and not even Kenji Kawai I think would fit. If I think about it, I think Kawai would make something Like Captain Tylor again, and…. dont fit at all.
3 – Birdy The Mighty
The original OVA of the 90ts. Koh Ohtani style, is very flagrant, yes, but, this was another anime that marked my youtth even in soundtrack. This is my top 1 soundtrack I like the most from him. There are a lot of very original ideas that fit the events. Almost like a "Symphonic Poem" of nowadays.
Although I have a friend that doe snotlike the main theme because it makes him remember Mario Sunshine. XD… but I have to agree with him…
Still…Best choice ever for a first Koh Ohtani Soundtrack for you to be introduced.
4 – BRONZE
The yaioy anime and manga that I am so FAN about. This anime has a very deep , deeep, and again… deeeeeep compositions.
This is a sad story in a vert deep way, and so are the compositions. I really love all tracks and and this is my second top1 right next to my beloved Birdy. 🙂

Thanks for Birdy the Mighty. I’ve been listening to Ginga Sengoku Gunyuuden Rai Image Album by Otani and am looking for something similar by him – specifically orchestral, maybe something similar to Colossus or Gundam W. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Colossus was my first experience with Otani. I liked it for its repetitive / predictable(?) cues. I’m not sure how to explain it. Otani takes a particular musical phrase and beats the hell out of it in several directions, then he changes key and does it all over again. I really like it. Outlaw Star and Gundam W are similar. I don’t think Colossus is any better or worse than his other scores, just more of the same. Ginga Sengoku Gunyuuden Rai Image Album is different. I want to hear more like it. *Shrug*

What no one get and still beat the man, is that he has his own style. What I noticed is… the soundtrack he makes like birdy the mighty, it has a certain theme, which by strange chance will be used has the main theme of the next work. I consider that as "Leaving you a glimpse of something to come". I love his style, Gundam wing… is not my favorite, and I can pick some tracks I love from it. For me is best ever works are: BRONZE, Outlaw Star, Vampire Hunter, Birdy the mighty (will ever be my top1 for him), Shakugan no Shana, Tenchi Muyo Manatsu no Eve.these are my favorite and the best of his style. Totally worth the money. Unless you are into symphonic too much, and you will get very disappointed.

Otani’s style is awesome. I enjoy a balance of symphonic and jazzy / pop synth tracks. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been focused on more of the symphonic albums, but my attention is always shifting. "It’s all good," as they say. 😀
