Oh and Balthier, best character ever. EVER. Seriously, in the prison scene when he jumps in the pit, gives his hand motion with a smirk that just says "bring it, bitches," that did it for me. Plus he’s always so witty and calm.
Only problem I’m having is getting gil for the expensive equipment. Other than that, this game is truly awesome.
I don’t know what everyone’s beef is with the story, btw, Seems to flow at just the right pace, imo.
My main party is Vaan(19), Balthier(20) and Fran(20). Vaan is tank, Balthier is support and Fran is healer. Works out great, except when I run out of potions/phoenix downs ;_;
FTR, the only guest I have enjoyed having was Larsa. At least he fucking helps with healing instead of just attacking. FUCK YOU VOSSLER! FUCK YOU TO HELL!
Larsa is great. Best guest in the game imo.
And yes, you’re correct, XII is great. I didn’t know you had not played it tbh. Good work sir.
Man, XII is gonna be a tough one to beat, imo. I’m so early in the game too which is awesome. The battle sytem is the best so far as well. I actually want to grind now.
Also one thing I hate that pertains to most FF. When you defeat an esper and receive it, it’s only like… 1/10th of what it was. Kinda makes it not worth it at first, imo. =/ I mean a Wild Saurian killed Belias, lol.
Where are you in the game now?
But anyway, yeah, XII is awesome on the challenging factor.
I also agree about the Espers. I rarely ever used them, but they’re fun to get for the completion factor since each battle is challenging in a different way.
Any tips?
I got a 7 hitter on him but it only did like 4500 damage. =/ I NEED ETHERS
Also, if you’re good at getting chains in the Quickenings I recommend using two character parties and having them perform Quickenings in pairs. I always found that causes more damage than using three character Quickenings.
Unfortunately everyone levels up independently so try to stay even. I made the mistake of not doing that on the first playthrough.
Also on the bright side, that X-Zone status is exclusive to this battle and you’ll never have to endure it again.
I got a 7 hitter on him but it only did like 4500 damage. =/ I NEED ETHERS
Get at least one quickening for all characters, start a chain, trade one character out, use the new character start a new chain etc. You can get at least 4 chains that way.
And that chest stuff to get the good equips sucks ;/
There’s an alternative way to get it which is extremely time consuming. There’s a chest that has a 10% chance of appearing, 10% chance of it including an item and not gil, and 10% chance of it being the Zodiac Spear. 1/1000… I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s worth it quite yet, but it’s great. I don’t know much about the other good weapons so I’m not gonna say it’s worth it as I honestly don’t know, cause in my second playthrough that was my tank. ๐
I’d be going for it anyway if I missed it since I’m a completionist, it’d probably take 6 hours… I mean, 1000 tries.
If you don’t yet have quickenings, I would suggest using whatever licence points available to get them, and if you need, just go back to the sandsea to get some.
In my opinion, killing the first one is worth it. For the Demonsbane’s you can acquire. They are very good swords for that stage in the game.
Anyway your best bet would be to start the battle with a quickening chain and hopefully a decent concurrence. Then use physical attacks until right near the end, and bring your reserve members in to do another quickening chain, again hopefully with a concurrence.
Make sure you set your gambits to attack nearest visible, that way, if the party leader is healing or whatever, the others will still attack it.
Any tips?
You are level 25 at that point? Good lord. I dunno what I was. I didnt buy any weapons or armour intil I had my ass handed to me by a few bosses around this point. I was so under leveled in this game it was crazy. I struggled with absolutly every boss lol.
You might be mistaken, I’ve past that part already, I’m just going back to try and defeat the Demonwall for the kickass sword. Don’t get me wrong, I do decent damage, yet I keep running out of time when he’s > 5% life left. =/ If only that damn walkway was a little longer!
Join the crowd. I’m on my first playthrough as well, though I’m a little further ahead.

Wait till a little later on and you start finding out some of his background. Fucking. Awesome.
…Damnit! I got an hour before work and now I wanna play the shit out of this game! Argh…
Oh well, I guess I know what I’ll be doing when I get off. Thank god I have no work tomorrow.
I would switch members in and out based on who has quickenings and who doesn’t. Switch out the people who have already used their quickening for someone who hasn’t. After you can no longer use quickenings, just keep attacking. That’s how I beat him (and several other bosses) anyways.
I also found that saving one quickening for the end of that battle helped too. Most bosses are very hard to beat when they’re almost dead, so it’s nice to have one person who can use a quickening out of battle until the end.
EDIT: You can’t switch people out if they’re being targeted. You’ll know if they are if their name appears in red/pink letters rather than blue.
Yup, im addicted to this freakin game to.
I’ve clocked up nealy 100 hours since may 14th!
I’ve just spent the last week levelling up,all my characters are on level 39 and im still kicking around the jungle,oh and the mountain (cant remember the name of it)
Those damn "Hellhounds" holy shit they are tough cookies!!!
By the way "OP" when killing time levelling up, you may want to arm your characters with a Golden Amulet (accessories) you get double licence points while you are running around slaying!
Right, no work for me today coz i have the flu..so its FX11 time right now!
Embroidered Tippets (double EXP) are more important than Golden Amulets since it’s relatively easy to fill your license board and less easy to level up. You can steal Tippets from Coeurls in the Tchita Uplands if you have Thief’s Cuffs equipped.
On a side note… I wanna see how long until I can have those bastards filled up and still stay that low of levels. >=D
I’m going to attempt that fucking Demonwall again. I got Aero, Regen and Esuna. ~w00t~
For now, I’m just a FFXII newbie who can’t get enough.
Also, glad you’re enjoying it. I should really continue with my save again. I might carry on with it tomorrow actually.
I was the same until the end of the game. At the end I had the top filled for every character, and almost the entire bottom for my main characters.
It’s a pretty good method. However, bear in mind that by "as SOON as they became available", I mean as far as you can go without continuing the story. Like, I’d save and keep opening a chest that’s supposed to contain an item I didn’t have until getting it. And these chests include ones in places you could walk to before you were even meant to. Like as soon as you could leave Rabanastre, I’d get every obtainable piece of equipment in chests in the Westersand that I didn’t have, and even go as far as the ones in Zertinan Caverns, constantly running of course. And right before you’re supposed to go to Jahara for the first time to continue the story, it was possible to go as far as Mosphoran Highwaste and the Salikawood, so getting everything there while running was fun.
But I thought I might add (especially for you Swami), even in that game I waited to get the Demonsbane after advancing a little further. If that’s not enough, I was also stronger than average, because in that game I did this thing where in every area I’d fight/steal all the possible loot to obtain until I’d have as many as I’d ever need in the whole game to complete all the bazaar recipes which use it. Thanks to that I was never underleveled (I usually outleveled all the MANDATORY bosses), and even in that situation I gave in to waiting till later to beat that other wall.
I kicked the wall’s ass. I had Fran spam Aero then used quickenings, then finished with another. Easier with Aero for sure. I also got the Demonsbane and damn is it powerful!
I just got done with Judge… crazy guy with 2 swords (forgot the name) And now I have to travel halfway across the world. So I figured I’d take a small break for now.
My mains are all level 32, btw. I’m not sure how that fits with the general level scheme of the area, but I think I’m about 2 levels above what the norm would be?
Anywho, the bosses are kinda cake since I figured out the whole licence board and getting GOOD armor. In fact, I make it a point to not use quickenings as it’ll make the boss too easy. I’m not saying I can leave the controller down and walk away then poof, battle over. But it doesn’t require me to think much into it.
The only boss I’ve had trouble with was Vossler, but that’s because my healer/magic user was Fran. Her starting the battle in berserk was not very good for me.
The forest dragon thing was fun. Except for Larsa’s pansy ass dying every 5 seconds. He’s got around 880HP and my party members are in the 1500-2000 range.
I also lol’d when Balthier was like, "Larsa, you don’t even know your dad!" then 10 minutes later from Al-Cid, "Larsa, your dad’s dead." Double whammy.
Finally I would like to say that the Mateus was a major annoyance. Why? Because those fucking ice clouds. "Weak to Thunder" Okay! *casts Thunder* WTF? 0 DAMAGE?! *casts Thundara* WTF? 200 DAMAGE?! *Hits with sword* WTF? 800 DAMAGE? Seriously the tooltip needs to say, "Weakness: [Sword Symbol]"
You get to kill chocobos! Not sure if this is a FF first, but it’s a first for me. It’s unusually entertaining.
Ivalice is awesome!
Easy, bro. Moogles are the shit, kupo!
I know, but just for curious I looked in the strat guide too see the writer’s characters at oe point I had already past. My guys are double the HP and MP of theirs so i figured I was OP, lol. Plus the guide always warned of difficulty and I hardly have any. Are boss levels determined by your own?

Doesn’t mean they’re untouchable!!!

You get to kill Chocobos in X-2 as well.
lol. I forgot about that. Don’t they run away if you don’t kill them fast enough (or if you attack a different monster before them?)
(ftr….this is in response to the moogle/chocobo killing discussion above, I arrived here from a post link so didn’t check the third page)

Oh yeah, i know what you mean. I’ve had that game for awhile. But I got the collector’s edition about a week ago. I played for about 25 hours within two days. (Whew..!) I know, you CANNOT stop playing it. Almost impossible. Balthier is the coolest guy in the game. Try to stop playing it man! I know it’s hard, you can do it!!!
I tried fighting him, just to get a feel for it. At first it was easy-peasy. He and his minions were dealing 100-200 damage a turn, no biggie. Then I killed one of the mini-bombs and alluva sudden I’m getting smacked around like a prostitute who forgot to pay her pimp. Twice. Seriously, King Bomb headbutts me for 2k+ damage… on 4 seperate occasions. That’s an instant KO for all my characters, except for maybe Balthier. Needless to say, I will be waiting until I try this fucker again. You win this round, King Bomb!
As a side lol, my inactive characters each have 1k LP each.
If you have a wickedly strong mage you can use ice magick. It works well on the big bomb and the little bombs. Usually KOs the little bombs in one hit too.
Are boss levels determined by your own?
I have no idea. Sorry.
No, they’re not.
Fuck that. If I don’t kill the little bombs, he could create a chain asplode.
Wanna beat him? Silence him. ๐ I did it and he didn’t even call the little bombs. (If I remember correctly, it’s been a while, I’m beating Yiazmat now).
Ae you sure? I mean… realy sure? Because I DISTINCTLY remember the little bombs being there from the intro cinema!
No, they’re not.
Well… that’s disheartening.

Kill all but one of the little bombs, it helped me with that battle.
Yeah, it’s kinda sad that the bosses don’t level up, or even the creatures like in Tactics (PS1.) : (
It’s still an amazing game though. : )
Anywho, update! I’m in the P..P.. the coast! (I’m bad with names) My guys are level 34 and I happily found a Platinum Sword off the first veggie-head I killed.
I plan to take out all the marks so far when my next playtime starts. With the monies, I’ll be able to buy some much needed new armor. Maybe weapons.
I’d first like to say, to hell with the White Mousse! Mother fucker almost wiped me twice.
Other than that, easy breezy beautiful cov– uh… it was a cinche!
Time to travel to Archadia and continue on the story! =D (after some provisions are purchased, of course)
It is hella worth it…
To explain the beef most have with the story (and me too) it’s not something you’ll have issues with generally until you’ve gotten a fair way through the game. FFXII starts off great, IMO, but as you progress further it feels as though the story lags out a little bit over the large expanses of "grinding through a massive field to get to your next location". Cutscenes become a seldom occurrance and many of the characters don’t even seem to be flashed out AT ALL (Penelo, anyone?).
I think the most frustrating thing with FFXII is that I can’t even say the story is bad and I hate it…because I don’t! The story itself is great I think but that’s just the problem, for a story that is great…there’s not enough of it!!!
If you’re fine with that though then you’ll thoroughly enjoy it I think.
So yesterday out of sheer randomness I decided to pop FFXII in my PS3 and play again. Apparently I was supposed to go to Feywood to chase Dr. Cid again. So after an hour at the Cerobi Steppe, I looked at the walkthrough to figure out where the fuck to go.
All was good and well in the land of Feywood. I kicked every creature’s ass I came across. Except for a certain special enemy by the name of "Juggernaut." He seemed to toss Vaan and Balthier around like he was tossing salads. It’s a good thing Fran has Raise on a Gambit.
Speaking of salads, that fucking plant boss you fight that drains your MP. LAME! I mean, I won on the first try, due to me having the "wait" option and seeing that warning sign the instant the battle started. But still, I had to walk back to the save crystal afterwards to refill everything, something I rarely do in this game (directly after boss fights). I’m just nit-picking anyways.
Right now I’m saved in the ancient city of girguvegenbalfarbgkmgk(sp?). The adventures of half of a group continue! (Because Basch, Penelo, and Ashe can fuck off)

1) If you enjoyed the fight with that guy that drains MP, wait until you go after the summons…some of them can be quite fun in similar ways.
2) I think you had an extra "k" in there somewhere. ๐ ("girguvegenbalfarbgkmgk(sp?)")
3) You will make Basch, Penelo, and Ashe cry if you leave them out. Although, i did do the same thing to Penelo, Balthier, and Fran.
Seriously, if it weren’t for Fran’s stunning little rabbit-ass, I wouldn’t have used her at all.
Seriously, if it weren’t for Fran’s stunning little rabbit-ass, I wouldn’t have used her at all.
Meh, aside from stats (which barely make a difference if you keep everyone even), they’re pretty much all the same. I know they’re not really and they specialize in different things, and how Basch supposedly makes a good tank, but to me they’re all the same. Also I taught everyone at a time everything I had as I got it on the license board as they went along during my last playthrough.
Their quickenings are the only moves exclusive to them and they all do the same thing, you just decide in what order to let them have all three.
Seriously, if you’re at a good enough level, stats, which are the only things that differentiate characters, don’t even matter anymore.
But as far as stats go, Fran really IS the one that got the shaft. Each of the characters has a certain advantage stat-wise, but Fran has none.
Yep, she’s basically the Kimahri of XII.
Also… I think I should challenge myself a bit more in this game. Bosses are a fucking breeze and I just got the license for Bubble so no one can even come close to KOing any character now. I still love XII. :3
Enforced character classes make the game a bit more challenging. As does a complete run-through, leaving no sidequest unturned and no weapon unsynthesized. ๐

Are you telling me you actually beat Yiazmat in 122333?
Good heavens no! But I have read that the only real strategy at such low levels is 3 Fohmalhauts + 3 Dark shots.
