Mine would have to be FFVIII’s "Residents". But other ones, I’d have to say FFVII’s "Debut", FFXII’s "Little Rascal", and FFVIII’s "Slide Show Part 1" (Part 2 gets too much attention, not that it doesn’t deserve it), and FFX’s "Hopeless Desire".
Remember, overlooked ones only.
From FFVII, I’d say, "Requiem," "Mark of the Traitor, "Ahead on our Way," and "Secret Sleeping in the Water."
FFX: "Sight of Spira," "Scorching Desert," lots of others I can’t think of right now.
FFX-2: "Kilika," "Luca"
FFXII: "Eruyt Village"
FFX:
"People of the North Pole" – On Mt. Gagazet; wonderfully dreary.
"Hurry" – My favourite ‘hurry up’ music of all the FFs.
"Decisive Battle" – Last boss theme. Excellent though unconventional battle theme.
FFVII:
"You Can Hear the Cry of the Planet" – From the Ancient ruins.
The song that plays in the Ancient temple. I forget the name.
FFVIII:
"The Landing" – From landing in Dollet Dukedom. I can’t recall if it ever plays again.
"The Mission" – Plays in Balamb Garden after your return escape from prison.
"The Spy" – Funky little tune played while infiltrating the Galbadian missile base.
What is that? Hopeless Desire or something else?
Jidoor town song in 6
The Magic House is pretty popular actually, wasn’t it on one of the mix albums?
Oh, another one I forgot about. VIII’s victory fanfare. Best. Fanfare. Loop. Ever.
I tried playing this myself (thanks to the MIDI + Noteworthy Composer program) but it’s a little too hard for my piano playing skill.
FFIV "Lunarians"
Awright, awright, taken care of. Oh, and
Well, I don’t talk about FF music all that often so forgive me if I name something popular…
FFVIII:
"The Landing" – From landing in Dollet Dukedom. I can’t recall if it ever plays again.
I’ll forgive you, but "The Landing" is terribly popular. In fact I think it’s the single most popular track on FFVIII’s score.
Anyway, if I had to single out just one, I’d go with FFVIII’s "Silence and Motion." I actually quite like it.

It’s on the piano collection so I wouldn’t exactly call it overlooked, but yeah, it’s great.
"The Landing" – From landing in Dollet Dukedom. I can’t recall if it ever plays again.
seconded, favorite track in ff8 which just plays once in the game.
huh, i dont remember hearing it, and two days ago i passed that scenario.
maybe i was so amazed at the awesomeness of the scenario i didnt pay attention.
Blue Fields, Fear and the Spy from FFVIII,
just a few that come to mind.
FFV: Unknown Lands (I think that’s the one of the third world. Unfortunately, the other one is named The Land Unknown, so I always get those 2 confused. It’s one of the best and most awesome and emotional FF themes ever, and it gets absolutely no love… everytime I hear it I have to cry. ;-;)
FFVI: The Phantom Train and The Serpent Trench
In the spirit of older FF songs, I also love Mt. Ordeals from FFIV–another one of those modal diddles discernibly of Uematsu stock. Starts in D-lydian, then has some really great changes.
There are a host of others from FFVI too that I could mention, but their names escape me at the moment.
FFII:World Map
FFIII: Doga’s Mansion
FFIV: Hey, Cid!
FFV: Normal and boss battle theme, as well as World map theme 2 and 3. And We mustn’t forget the Warrior of Dawn theme!
FFVI: Forever Rachel
FFVII: Debut
FFVIII:The Mission
FFIX: Protect my Devotion
FFX: Someday the Dream will end
FFXI: (No joke) Male Tarutaru theme (when you create you character)
FFXII: The song that plays when you are in Rabanatre <—-(Spelling?)
FFVII: Main (World Map) theme (a lot of players like still more fighting over it), Sector 5 Slums
FFVIII: Compression of Time
FFIX: Kuja’s theme, Fairy Battle
FFX: Sprouting (don’t know if it was overlooked persay), Rikku’s theme
FFXI: Hume Male theme
FFXII: Penelo’s theme, Dalmasca Eastersand
FF8: Only a Plank Between One and Perdition, The Castle, The Extreme (damn sight better than the eternally-overrated One-Winged Angel, and I don’t care if you disagree)
FF9: Pretty much everything.
Also forwarding another vote for ‘The Extreme’ from FFVIII.
FFVII – Anxious Heart (it gets some attention but not that much IMO), Who Am I?
FFVIII – Find Your Way
FFI – Cornelia Castle, Town, Battle Scene
FFIII – Battle 2, Jinn’s Curse, Town of Amur, Dorga And Unne’s Mansion
FFVI – Awakening, Shadow, Relm, Dark World,
FFVII – The Flow of Life, Ahead on our way, Mako Reactor, It’s Difficult to Stand on Both Feet Isn’t it?, Costa Del Sol, Don of the Slums, Hurry, FFVII Main Theme
FFVIII – Never Look Back, Waltz for the Moon, Timber Owls, Ride On
FFVII – Anxious Heart (it gets some attention but not that much IMO), Who Am I?
FFVIII – Find Your Way
Anxious Heart is on the piano collections AND the Project Majestic Mix soundtrack. Find Your Way has a lot of piano arrangements as well.
Who Am I works though.
FFVII: "Prelude". That had to be one of the most overlooked songs in the game. You can hear it after the Square Soft logo when you start up the game.
FFII – Ancient Castle
FFIII – Jinn’s Curse
FFIV – Prologue (Best version, imo)
FFV – Walking the Snowy Mountains
FFVI – Fierce Battle
FFVII – Fighting
FFVIII – Waltz for the Moon
FFIX – Assault of the White Dragons
FFIX: Dark Messenger
ff4 tower of zot
ff5 battle with gilgamesh
ff6 fierce battle
ff7 hurry
ff8 succession of witches
Not by me… I made a MIDI file of it that’s made the rounds online, way back when. ๐
If Advent Children counts, then the song "Calling", the ending theme; both "Tenrai" songs("Divinity"); and "Sign", the song from Healinn.
"The Travel Agency" from 10 is good, too.
And the original Final Fantasy game… "Matoya’s Cave" and "Sailing Ship".
By the way, "Prelude" was on quite a few of the mix albums.
Also enjoy a lot Maybe I am a Lion and The Extreme from the same game.
Just kidding. The Highwind Takes to the Skies and Hurry Faster! from VII, Cyan’s Theme from VI and Beyond the Wasteland from FFTA. XD
Anyway…
FF10 – Via Purifico (Just awesome. I love piano tracks)
FF8 – Drifting (So simple, yet so amazing)
FF2: Boss Battle A
FF3: Jinn, the fire, Last Battle (Old, New and Black Mages’ Version)
FF4: Rydia, Main Theme, Battle 1
FF5: Battle 1
FF6: Decisive Battle, Aria, Locke’s Theme
FF7: Hurry Faster!, Anxious Heart, Continue?
FF8: Shuffle or Boogie, Waltz for the Moon, Julia, The Loser, The Winner
FF9: Gulug Volcano (remixed),Dark Messenger, Fairy Battle, Game Over
FF10: Someday the Dream Will End, Game Over
FF12: Penelo’s Theme, Dalmasca Estersand, Giza Plains, Rabanstre (pizzicato strings!!!)
Lots and Lots of Game Over (probably because I hear them too many times)
I forward another vote to FFVII’s "It’s Difficult to Stand on Both Feet, Isn’t it?"
FF4: the theme that plays in the Moon… don’t even know the name.
FF6: two names: the third Boss Battle theme. "Fierce Battle" I think is the name… the first two got a Black Mages remix… but this one, nothing…; the other would be Relm’s Theme, it’s simply beautiful.
FF7: the theme of the City of Ancients, for which you can get remixes at OCRemix, but nothing that comes slightly close to the style and mood of the original; and JENOVA Absolute, which you get to hear one time only and for a short time because JENOVA SYNTHESIS is simply useless as a boss…
FF8: Three words: "The Legendary Beast". For me, the most overlooked theme. Man this theme is so underplayed. I mean, it plays for a section of a part of a multi-boss battle. Even worse if you’re good enough to beat Griever to a pulp in under 4 hits. And it’s so damn good. When I heard the album "FITHOS LUSEC WECOS VINOSEC" came out I was begging for this theme to be on it, but they instead went with… well… others. I’d give the rest of my soul to hear an orchestral or philarmonic version of "Legendary Beast".
FFTA: looks this game is not very known, but I’d go for "Prison". The game does not get you to appreciate that piece, when you hear Prison you are only wanting to get away from the place.
That would be it for me.
*runs*
It’s the main theme and it’s rarely mentioned at all.
Listen to it. It’s calming, like a good Enya song.
Final Fantasy VIII – The Mission.
One of the most action-packed songs I’ve ever heard.
It really gets your blood going and gets you excited to move forward and do what you gotta do. Excellent name for the mood it gives you.
Final Fantasy VII – Who Are You /&/ Who Am I
They go excellently together. The slow bursts of it, then moments of silence as all the instruments fade sound really good to me.
Final Fantasy Tactics – Holy Angel’s Theme
It’s hard to pick some, seeing as how I think the score for Tactics is the best one right up there with Final Fantasy VIIIs score.
This one though is particularly enjoyable. It’s got quite the wide range of instruments that flow together.
How about also "Save Them" from Final Fantasy VI? It’s very good, and yet I don’t think I’ve ever really seen it mentioned much.
FFVI – "Epitaph"
FFVIII – "Compression of Time"
Incidentally, this is my first post.
FF II – Resurrection Room
FF III – Eternal Wind
FF IV – The Lunarians
FF V – Reminiscence
FF VI – Dark World
FF VII – Victory Theme
FF VIII – Maybe I’m a Lion
FF IX – Crystal World
FF X – Twilight
FF X-2 – Seagull Group
FF XI – Sometime Somewhere
FF XII – Rabanastre Downtown
FF Tactics – Team Making
I’ll change my vote to one of these:
Find Your Way
My Mind
The Spy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fKGcc_tjDg
That one music alone sold me a PS2! (which is now broken, unfortunately =[ )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdB7UrUc_s8
I don’t know how popular FFXII’s Seeking Power is, but I’m a huge fan of that one as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sujtfe7Tsro
FFV – The Fire Powered Ship , so adventure-ish’
FFVI – Grand Finale (Wasn’t it supposed to go on the disc?), Dark World (woah), and Ending Theme (not sure if it ‘fits’, since it’s more like a medley, but What a medley!)
FFVII – Makou Reactor (it’s like "pommm-po-po-pom…-pom-pommmm")
Parochial Town (now THIS is overlooked, i just enjoy the melody), Off the Edge of Despair.
however it is performed at the distant worlds concert and on piano by tanioka.
the soundtrack for 11 rarely gets a mention.
the piano collection was pretty good.
FF VII – Infiltrating Shinra Tower, Underneath the Rotting Pizza, and Trail of Blood
– All of them have a kind of dark atmosphere to them, but i rarely see anyone go "omg i love that song!" Trail of Blood is a favorite of mine.
FF VIII – Galbadia Garden, Intruders (when you’re in the sewers), The Spy, Martial Law, Fear, The Salt Flats, Silence and Motion, and Lunatic Pandora.
– I’m a FF VIII fan and think it’s Nobuo’s best work (even now). It seems to me, however, there are a lot of songs people don’t give a good listen. I like how funky The Spy is, and just how strange Lunatic Pandora is. Silence and Motion is definitely one i enjoy when i need a fun tune.
FF IX – Awakened Forest, Ice Caverns, Lindbum (not sure if this is true or not), Gargan Roo, and Crystal World.
– i’m not sure about FF IX in this aspect as much as the others…
FF X – Secret Maneuvers, Sprouting, Luca, Thunder Plains, Seymour’s Ambition, Way of Purgation (when Yuna is all alone after the wedding), Challenge.
– There are a lot of good tracks that i think people miss out on. Challenge is one of the big ones that i’ve noticed. I love the song, personally, but i rarely even see anyone mention it…
FF X-2 – YuRiPa Fight 2, YuRiPa Fight 3, Mission Complete!, Kilika, Luca, Thunder Plains.
– It always make me sad to see people say they skip the battle tunes from this game, i think they are some of the best tracks on the ost.
As for FF XI and beyond… i couldn’t tell you. I haven’t listened to either OST enough to know. Also, i haven’t listened to the pre-VII tracks to know enough. I’m glad to see there are people who agree with me on some choices though.
": The Heart of Melting Magic
": The Chosen Summoner
": Stirring the Forest
FFVIII: Under Her Control
": The Extreme
FFX: Sight of Spira
": Blitz Off
": Silence Before the Storm
": To The End of The Abyss
And from FFIX Heaven Distress kinda captured the mood of the game at the point. I think alot of music from the Cleyra bit is overlooked but what do I know?
Yeah, pretty much overlooked. :erm:
One Winged Angel only played once throughout the whole game.
You missed the point of this thread. It’s not about "how often did they use it in the game" but how often was it re-used/played on arrange albums, concerts, how popular is it with the fans (i.a. remixes).
"One Winged Angel" is one if not the most popular music piece of the whole FF series.
however it is performed at the distant worlds concert and on piano by tanioka.
the soundtrack for 11 rarely gets a mention.
the piano collection was pretty good.
I agree with everything you stated. FFXI’s OST, like the game itself, is sadly underrated and always overlooked by most FF fans. Which does it a great injustice, as the soundtrack is so very good.
Tracks like Memoria di la Stona (the powerful opening movie theme), Ronfaure (Uematsu at his very best), Gustaberg (who would have thought a theme for a desolate wasteland would be so excellent?), Metalworks (a rousing military march is not what I would have expected for an industrial complex, but it works surprisingly well), Castle Zvahl (a dark and oppressive theme that really suits the Shadowlord’s malignant citadel), and of course, his ‘final’ boss theme Awakening, of which needs no explanation other than it grabs you in and doesn’t let go. ๐
Then there is the expansion OSTs which are equally good, if not better, than the original game’s OST. Tracks like The Hall of the Gods and Kazham (from Rise of the Zilart), Faded Memories ~ Promyvion, Moblin Menagerie ~ Movalpolos and Distant Worlds (from Chains of Promathia), and other tracks from the Treasures of Aht Urhgan and Wings of the Goddess OSTs which I don’t know the track names for.
Awesome stuff. ๐
Amur, Gysahl, Tozus… best town themes ever in any FF game. Besides Black Mage Village in FF9, of course.
FF8: The Man with the Machine Gun, The Mission, Finding Your Way, Succession of Witches
FF9: Over the Hill, Battle 1, Freya’s Theme, Unfathomed Reminiscence, Loss of Me,
Anyway, here’s a list of some of my favourites I haven’t seen mentioned too often, if at all:
FF IV – Within the Giant, Another Moon, Mystic Mysidia
FF VIII – Lunatic Pandora, The Stage is Set
FF IX – Footsteps of Desire, Black Waltz
FF X – Djose Temple, Unwavering Decision
FF XII – Giruvegan’s Mystery, The Sandsea
Ahh! Forgot Immoral Melody, Find your Way, The Salt Flats, Pandemonium.
The Legendary Beast
Seeking Power
Kuja’s Theme ~ Millenium Version(Desert Palace)
That’s all for now. I’ll edit or repost if I think of anything else.
Every one of those, is pretty far from overlooked. Just sayin’. Especially the first one. Dude you know better than that.
