Final Fantasy VI Character Development

Which character in Final Fantasy VI do you think had the most time spent on them pertaining to character development? Who do you think could have been expanded on more so (I don’t think we can count Umaro, Mog, or Gogo)? Final Fantasy VI had the most available characters in any Final Fantasy game, and I can see how there would be these two extremes.

For me, I think that either Shadow or Terra are the most elaborated on. Even though Terra really does not seem all too important in the world of ruin, to where as they chose Celes to be the focal point of the early part, I think that her self discovery is one of the most powerful points in the game pertaining to character development. Shadow, however, I am basing solely on the dreams. They were a great isnight into his past. Everytime I play, I make sure to see these.

And, as far as lacking character development time… I would have to chose Strago and Relm. Their story had a lot of potential, which was unused.

Relm and Shadow are interconnected, as it were, so sure Relm got "enough." 😉

I’d say Locke is developed the best, imo, as we see his past with Rachel and how he struggled to rectify that with Terra and Celes. Though both of them are just as well developed. I wouldn’t mind a little more Sabin/Edgar action. Little bit more of a glimpse into the Figaro monarchy.

I think they did the best they could, though.

Setzer could’ve used a little more development.

I think Cyan was one of the most elaborated characters, as his whole story is seen, with his family being killed by Kefka’s poison, the scene on the Phantom Train and his very characteristic way of speaking.

Gau virtually had no development. Just a little about his father

Gogo on the other hand has no development

But Terra, Locke, and Celes seem to be the ones with the most in the game

I would say Celes had the most, but Terra and Shadow would definitely be right on her heels

I played FF6 recently. Gau only had one scene with his father in the World of Ruin but it was a long cutscene comprising several short clips. Even before that, there are some hints given when talking to NPCs but there’s really not much development for him. There wasn’t a ‘story dungeon’ for him like Setzer or Locke. Also, the player could have let Shadow live or die depending on their choice to wait on the Floating Island at the end of the World of Balance. The developers could have just used this as an excuse to cut down on development for him.

I thought Gogo was a secret character (he does appear in FF5 first). Wish Mog and especially Umaro had some extra story though.

Kefka. He’s developing throughout the entire game. The game never stops talking about him

Terra was prominent in the first part. VERY.
Then Shadow came along and stole the spotlight (kinda).
So did Relm.
Then Kefka tore the world into…whatever.
Then Celes got the whole spotlight. ALL OF IT.
Until the end of the game (except for the part when Terra tries to save them all and loses her magic)

Oh, and the spotlight switches characters in the later part.

From my perspective it would have to be Terra. Though her development definitely begins to fade once you hit the world of ruin, a good amount of most all characters development takes place prior to it anyway.

Terra has a very in-depth back story. We know her mother and father, where she was born, the circumstances surrounding her birth, and the state of the world at that time. In addition, we know exactly where she’s been from that time, right up unto the point where we take control of her.

Her actual "character" evolves the most throughout the game (at least I perceive it that way), though post Phunbaba, there’s really not much more to her.

Though her whole story might not be as engaging as say; the Shadow|| Realm connection. I believe she has the most straight forward development, or at least the most linear lacking vagueness.

i feel that it is locke

I think the characters with the most development were definitely Terra, Locke, Celes, Edgar and Sabin. I haven’t been able to see all of Shadow’s dreams yet 🙁 But for the least, I think Kefka; why is he the way he is? Or did I miss something? Maybe his eccentrically maniacal personality needs no explanation.

I would say Terra and Locke the game dives into both of their pasts and through the game it shows how they change and react based on what happened before.
