A good example of this: Rei Ayanami.
Rei Ayanami started at least 2 anime fads. The first is the "attractive teen- aged girl who is emotionally dead and mysterious fad." Next is the "girl wrapped in bandages with a eye patch fad."
Oh and I’m still trying to figure out who started the emotionless hero fad which we see in just about every Gundam series nowadays. Not to mention the whole masked villain thing.
*sigh* Uhhh…I don’t think she started that fad…I think Mahrochromatic either started that fad or brought it into prominence.
Oh and i almost forgot….who started the "uber-powerful girl who can kick every guys ass fad"?
imitating the sounds of the Pokmon, & that of the Owners.
Tsundere characters have been popular for decades.
I think the masked villain thing predates animation period.
I would have to say Eva. But the thing with Eva is that everyone has a pretty good reason for feeling the way they are unlike "real" emo kids and any anime that uses the type of "emo kid" characters probably is even on a subconscious level riping off Eva. And then there’s the fact that Eva is a subversion of the "giant robot anime" genre and has a lot of plot points, character arcs, & similarities to the first Gundam series which would also be considered "emo" like Eva if not for the fact that it’s about children and civilians being forced into war. Which you’d expect the characters to become depressed after a while.
Amuro Ray was kind of a sissy at times.
But, I guess for good reason.
He was just a civi.

Amuro, don’t turn around now
That shining star is too far beyond you
Amuro your native planet your true homeland
Can you remember now those childhood days gone by
You woke up with the morning sun it was warm and alive and fun
Amuro, don’t turn around Amuro
Big boys don’t you cry don’t you cry now no don’t you cry now
Just for tomorrow, for tomorrow, for forever
Amuro, don’t turn around now
That twinkling star is at the end of the universe
Amuro your abandoned planet your true homeland
Never forget the vow of your childhood days gone by
Take an oath on your youth and swear to save peace
For all the things that you love
Amuro, don’t turn around Amuro
Big boys don’t you whine don’t you whine now no don’t you whine now
Just for tomorrow, for tomorrow, for forever
Can you remember now those childhood days gone by

Lupin was created near the 70s, so I’m not surprised if there has been disco in it.

CP doesn’t have a ‘lets have some of the characters dance to a club/techno/disco" opening/ending.
The hero mask thing I think was Voltron.
Record of Loddos war’s Deadlit was the first anime elf.
The overdone samurai hero type I’ve seen in some 1930’s stuff.
I have to agree on the Eva starting the emo protagonist thing. It was just no one could do it properly sense then.
Okay what anime started the priestess thing. Not just looks but style.
The oldest thing I can think of right now is Blue seed. But I’m sure there are older.
.
Well they are Japanese, that’s like there version of a Clint Eastwood character.
"No Mr. Slave you were the asshole!"
I like how they spoofed it in the last ep of Evanglion.
True that style sucks and is done more for sales then the fans now a days. It needs to go.
I wonder what happened to the Amishi thing they use to do in there fantasy, that was a fad that was at least decent.
Ha its literally in your post. Gigantor. 🙂
Masks are a universal icon in every culture so that’s none to surprising. I’m sure some of Osamu Tezuka’s bad guys have worn them.
Actually, I’m pretty sure Ed’s goggles do stuff while she’s hacking…
