Have to also thanks original ripper.
inFAMOUS is an increasingly rare product in a media environment saturated with sequels and spin-offs: an original superhero game that attempts to spin both a graphic novel-worthy yarn but also make a fun and not-too-brief game where there are many paths to success. In these aspects it has been compared to Prototype, which has many similar elements thematically and in gameplay.
I have not played inFAMOUS. So keep that in mind that I’m reviewing solely as a standalone work,
Three composers are involved in the making of the soundtrack. Amon Tobin, the legendary electronica producer fresh off of his experimental album "Foley Room" where he used real-life objects and samples to fashion music. Then there is Jim Dooley, a veteran video game composer who is a member of Remote Control Productions. Finally, Sony America’s sound director Jonathan Meyer contributes a few tracks under "JD Meyer". These three composers come together to fashion a fairly unique sound that combines unusual samples of real-life objects and instruments played in unconventional ways, along with elements of traditional Remote Control Productions-esque orchestration and electronic beats.
Amon Tobin’s tracks stand out the most overall. His sound here is familiar to those who have listened to "Foley Room", as it is composed in the same style. The tracks here, however, are more organized and cleaner than on the "Foley Room" album, like Tobin is on the verge of mastering the use of SFX in music. Tobin also samples brief elements from Jim Dooley’s contributions to help lend a thematic link to the rest of the production. "Rabble Rouser" is a pounding opener for the album, combining Tobin’s patented drum ‘n’ bass sound with SFX samples and brief orchestral samples that sets the template for the rest of the album. "Stampton Bridge" lends an Oriental, bleak bent that shows Tobin’s quirkier side. Later on, there are tracks like "The Courier" and "Anything For Trish" that show an impressive style, with Tobin using bass and guitar along with his Foley Room style to lend both flair and power to the proceedings.
Jim Dooley may be anathema to many board members here as he is a veteran of the controversial Remote Control Productions, which has been blamed for the generic nature of much film music these days. Perhaps if Dooley had been composing by himself, that would have been the case. But Amon Tobin’s presence basically kicked Dooley in the ass and Dooley does his damndest to give an inspired performance to not only match Tobin’s contributions but link with them, giving the album a unified feel. While the songs ("The First Sons, "Rampage", "End Of The Road" are some of the more notable numbers) have typical RCP elements like suspended strings, heavily distorted snarls of electric guitars, angry horn swells, and pounding electronic percussion, there is a grittier feel to the songs that make them stand out in their own way. "Escape", however, is the most flawed track, as it spends three minutes building up to a dramatic, desperate charge that never happens. Dooley’s finest contribution comes near the end with "Pleasant Empire", with some sweet, slow strings work overlaying a soft piano, lending a surprising amount of tenderness after a brutal and unrelenting album.
Dooley and Tobin also teamed up for three tracks. Out of those "Alden Strikes" is the finest work, it is unforgettable from the moment you hear the clattered percussion, with swirls of strings and bursts of angry horns work lending layers of menace and dramatic heft. "Meet The Reapers" and "Genesis" don’t have that menace, but that does not mean they are bad. "Meet The Reapers" is a gloomy and bleak tune that nevertheless summons up a tune similar to a chase scene, and "Genesis" contains enough dramatic swells to fill an entire album, perfectly showing the evolution of a hero.
Finally, the album is rounded out by a few JD Meyer contributions. For the most part, Meyer composes in Tobin’s style, and does a passable job of imitating Tobin. His work does not stand out the same way Tobin’s and Dooley’s do, but that does not mean Meyer’s tracks are skippable. Rather, I suggest listening to them and deciding for yourself whether they hold up. I in particular enjoy the pounding, near-symphonic percussion of "Tent City" a lot.
The album concludes with the ending theme by Working For A Nuclear Free City, with a dreary, emotional number that fits in with the rest of the album well. If you have the CD version you get three bonus tracks, one each by Tobin, Dooley, and Meyer, that serve to provide a nearly-full CD.
In short, buy this album. XD As the CD version is already becoming difficult to find, you’re going to have to go to iTunes. The iTunes version is missing the 3 bonus tracks but has a low price for all 20 tracks, and you can just yank the three bonus numbers from here. This way you support the artists, the company, and ffshrine all in one. Convenient.
