The first two chapters in all of their glory.

I have much more written, but I wanted to share just that much with you all to see what others think and in the hopes that people will give me some helpful criticism. Kindly let me know if I’ve succeeded in staying true to the characters thus far, as that has been my highest priority. I have taken some license with the story and minor characters in an effort to improve the story beyond its gaming origins. I will not be putting any more of it on to the internet, as I plan on presenting the finished work to Square Enix for possible publishing after I have completed it.

The sampler encompasses all events in the game leading up to where Cloud is about to fall into Aeris’ church.

I found this by chance while looking online to see what other novelisations were like. I have seen many and took a gander at yours, while it has good dialogue, it has too little description to stand up as a novel. Inside the reactor, for instance, aside from Cloud grabbing some handrails nothing is really described about the environment they are in.

While many fans will know what these areas look like, in order for the game to become a novel it really needs to be treated in such a way that if the book were to be accidentally read by someone who has not played the game; that they can still understand and enjoy it.

I also saw from another thread of yours that you have not seen a complete, well I completed one in January 2008 called ‘Curse of memory’ Good luck with yours and I hope you do well.

I find your opinion on it interesting, and I will keep that comment on description in mind. I do plan on thoroughly going back and editing everything once I’m finished so that things like that are covered and taken care of. I just don’t want to get so held up editing that I stop progressing with continuing the story. It is in no way in completed format at this time.

Do you have a link to this fully completed novelization of yours? I would be curious to see it…

I am glad you found the comments useful, description is vital really, I remember when I first played the game and stepped off the elevator at the number one reactor, with my jaw around my ankles at the environment. That’s what I believe a writer should try and replicate, that sense of a mass sprawling world that the characters are touched by.

As for mine, yeah I have a link, don’t want to be seen as spamming but as there is no private messaging feature I have no option really. Interestingly now that this one is finished I have actually started re-writing it and some of that is published to, but I digress, here we go: –

I must admit that looking at the environments and then trying to replicate them onto paper has been difficult for me. I think I have a good handle on the characters and their interactions, but I will definitely need to read some books for good examples of how to write interesting ‘settings’. My main concern, though, is spending too much time on describing such backgrounds; as keeping the action/interaction flowing and interesting is paramount in my opinion. It will be a tricky balance to achieve.

Out of curiosity, and if you have time to explain, I would love it if you could tell me what your biggest challenge was writing your own novelization. Also, any more detail you could give me on what I need to improve on in my own story and what I do well would be invaluable while it is still fresh in your memory. Well for me the hardest part of the story was after Midgar, the great thing about the initial bit of the game is that it all chained together in flowing day/week sections of one gigantic environment. Suddenly, once out of Midgar, you have to explain a lot more about travelling, locations, weather. It is very difficult to match and make it realistic. At least I found it so.

Well, I guess you can just make up the bits where you’re walking from town to town and fighting random monsters.

Something I would do as a filler.

If you get into the mindset of just adding filler it feels tedious to read and tedious to write. For me if I don’t enjoy writing something, I don’t post it. Been a rule I’ve had personally for years.

I’m actually looking forward to getting out of Midgar because, within it, my flexibility and ability to work with the characters feels rather constrained. I can’t wait until I have some of the travel/random battle areas because then I can put in my own interactions between the characters, fleshing them out and playing further with their personalities (and fighting styles). In Midgar it has been frustrating because I feel I can’t deviate from the events too sharply without ruining everything.

Is this absolute fan fiction or is this the actual story of FF7?

Hi Emilee, well it is fanfiction as I wrote it as a fan, but it is the main plot of FF7 with quite a few changes, however, I have now removed that one from the site as I am doing a total reboot of it to make it much much better, hope that helps 🙂
