I really was expecting. ๐
And not to sound ungrateful, but is there any chance of getting this in FLAC?

I have to disagree with you about this. I found it to be pretty generic and mostly put me to sleep. There was way too much percussion at times almost sounding like Bear McCreary but then other tracks had so much synth that it was painful. I also didn’t notice any melodies that really grabbed me.
I really found Gundam Unicorn to be good score. It has nice melodies (but I agree, not too memorable), it has some great purely orchestral moments (ON YOUR MARK, beautiful track), awesome beginning (U.C.0096 and UNICORN…), some nice action (Bourne-like MOBILE SUIT, LAPLACE – which actually reminds me of 160 BPM from Angels and Deamons), and few quite cool jazzy moments (trumpets!!!). I know it’s nothing groundbreaking, but I really like it.
Although I agree, for people who hates drums, beats, and electronica it can be hard to enjoy – but I like good beat (and the one in first track is just AWESOME!), and electronica (drums could actually go away, but they do not distract, so I can live with that), so it’s much easier for me to like it I guess.
I disagree. The beats are loud, yes, but I don’t feel that they overwhelm the orchestra. And the beats are present with great effect in the episode itself. Adds a very nice dramatic touch.
There’s certainly a case for a beat in some circumstances… but this isn’t one of them.
In scores like this, I wonder what purpose they serve: the modern symphony orchestra is the most massively expressive, versatile, powerful instrument ever devised. Laying a cliched drum loop over everything… what for?
Hiding underneath all this noise is an average but functional symphonic score. As Sirusjr observes, nothing special and nothing particularly noteworthy… but all this racket just gets in the way, IMHO as ever.
It’s a step in the right direction from the horrors of Gundam 00, but it won’t be spoken of in the same breath as Kanno’s shockingly brilliant music for Turn A, Senju’s subdued, gorgeous pastoral music for Victory, or Sahashi’s everything-but-the-kitchen-sink efforts for Seed and Seed Destiny. (Incidentally… there’s an example of how to do it right; there’s a beat in some cues, and there are synthesisers in other cues; but the majority of the music adheres to the tried and trusted techniques of the past; good melodies, and exciting orchestrations – even considering the pathetically small ensemble he had to work with.)
This, in direct contast with Sahashi’s cheap but very cheerful scores, feels like a great deal of production values and basically sod nothing going on underneath.
It’s a great shame; there was obviously a LOT of money floating around for Unicorn’s score… If only they’d used it to its fullest potential.
STILL… Gundam’s been going for 30 years. Music wise, it’s had some right clunkers and it’s had some masterpieces. I have no doubt that something wonderful is just around the corner.
Please, GOD, for the next Gundam score, let’s have the Warsaw Philharmonic and Masamichi Amano, or Yoshihisa Hirano. That’d be wonderful.
Yay Giant Robo!
So, a bit of off-topic…
As for bad or completely out of place use of beat and percussion, check this one (first 2 minutes)…

WTF? What the composer was thinking?;)

I got one better….Bear McCray doing a Gundam Soundtrack?
Some of his music from Caprica and Battlestar Galactica, also, is just gorgeous.
He has much to give, I feel. I just don’t understand why he feels the need to bathe everything in incessant, loud tribal percussion. Still, it’s his choice – and I do find his percussion use a damn sight more interesting than MV’s…
That’s not to say that he’s anywhere near the level of his Eastern counterparts like Amano, Hirano, Kanno, etc… But there’s more to McCreary than banging, slamming noises. ๐
God Bless U..
