Ive been a big fan of the FF franchise ever since i started playing video games, but i always seem to skip over FF9
So i’ll keep it short and sweet..
Is this game worth giving a go?
The only thing i know about this game is it goes back to it’s original FF roots being based in a medieval type setting.
Thanks in advance

It’s not even just "worth playing". It’s a damn good game.
The game is a throw back to the older FFs in terms of setting, you know…actual ‘fantasy’
The game play is also like older games with each character being a ‘class’, which is nice.
It’s not the best in the series, but it’s better than many games like FF7/11/TA2.
My biggest gripes with the game are the chibi-ish graphic style and, like FF8, the 4th disc kills any exploration.
What about FF7 or FFTA2 or FF11 or FFA?
Also, X-2 was fun…
Also, X-2 was fun…
TA2, TA don’t count as main series
I liked 7
I didn’t played 11, but I don’t like MMORPG in general.

I read over ‘main series’, so fair enough.
It’s pretty boring, to me, even for an MMORPG.
I didn’t like FF7…I think the materia system is one of the worst systems in FF.
Yeah I know, we already talked about it in other thread.

This.
Best FF of PSX generation. The only other game(for psx), i’ve had more fun playing was Vagrant Story. Anyway, play it and you won’t regret it.
And every FF game is ‘Focused on Story’. Its a god-damn RPG series! And 9 has the best.
Well, i picked up this game today and gave it a try. And i have to say, i really like it. In fact, i haven’t played anything since. Im still trying to like the main character, Zidane. But apart from that, im loving the story and having a good time with it.
Thanks for the replies.
It’s classical and simple….and Chocobo hot’n’cold…
Classical & Simple can lick my balls… IV was classical & simple, had a cast of super awesome characters and kicked ass, this is game is bull shit.
I love the sidequests in this game the most, Chocobo Hot and Cold was definately my favorite and the card game was much better than the one in VIII (I couldn’t play that one because of all the random rules). Happy gaming!
Gameplay: 10/10
Story: 7/10

Yeah, not everyone can agree can they.
No not really XD!
Haha.
Yeah, I really enjoyed the game actually. My favorite is still FF Tactics, which I think is the most underrrated FF ever.
EDIT: I can agree with you the story was somewhat dull at points… But I enjoyed the Fantasy aspects of it the most.
Tactics is my fauvorite as well, but the game isn’t main series & I don’t think it’s underrated, sure the game is awesome, but it’s not a blockbuster title, it’s not in the same level of production, think it as an independent movie type, there’s a lot of creativity in independent movies but many of them are not certainly made to satisfy the public.
Besides Tactics with the popularity of VII?, that would kind of suck IMO.
FFVII with FFVII’s popularity sucks. 😀
Man, I’ve missed so much around here lately 🙁
@ OP: Listen to no (that’s NO) naysayers; FFIX is among the best games ever created. Anyone who thinks it is not up to par with the rest of the series, or ‘sucks’, can’t possibly be playing the same game I did. Give it a try, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Especially that darn Topopoz guy, I dunno what he’s thinking! 😉 LOL, J.K., it’s all good. Everybody’s entitled to their own opinions, but coming from someone who loves fantasy, and seeing as how this is a fantasy series, IX is one of the best.

Yeah, too bad that VII got all that hype, it’s one of my fauvorite games & it’s very easy for people to label you as a fanboy for just liking it.
Just for the record, C3nt3rcor3 the only RPG’s he played are FF games, the rest is just implied. XD
BTW C3nt3r, I didn’t see you around these days, tough week?

LOL, yea, I admit it, I’m really kind of an RPG virgin except for the FF series, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, and . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I’ll hafta get back to ya on that. 😀
Like I’ve said, I love all FF titles, just VII’s hype annoys me. It used to be one of my favorite games too, tbh, and not in a fanboyish sort of way either like too many people are. Just . . . the same as I love all the others, really.
And actually, it’s just been a really busy week :O Been doing this and that, and had no real time to pay the Shrine a visit 🙁 Glad I got some time to do so now though 😀
You dirty bastard, so doing "this and that" huh? so the person in question got satisfied =D…. If you know what I mean ;)…. xDDDDDDDDDD
I understand you, march is kind of a filler month, but now that it’s ending, the action is really starting.
This March is going by really slowly for me, because I’m anxiously awaiting the coming of April. Gonna be the best time I’ve seen in quite a while 😀
The world is believable – I mean, everything in it works with everything else. You wouldn’t change a thing in it, everything flows together, characters, locations, music, gameplay, too. Everything is well thought.
The characters, whether you like them or not, are the most human you’ll find in a FF. At the end of the game, you can draw out a chart of how everyone feels and interacts with everyone else: you know how Zidane feels about Garnet, about Vivi, about Steiner, about Eiko, about Quina, about Amarant, because the game /tells you/. And the same goes for the others. It’s like a big web of connections – yeah, like the real world. That’s how it works.
The themes in the game, they are gorgeous. Every one of them sinks in your memory, even those of secondary locations. Every one of them, you can put on your iPod and listen to it, and you’re listening to a real song, and you’ll find yourself humming it. Not just a tune to break off the silence when running around in a game – they’re all songs, beautifully composed.
If you can go past the artstyle, you’ll see this game has a mature story. And at the same time, it’s not conceited in the least, it never takes itself seriously, and that what makes it so extremely elegant. Yeah, that’s the word I’d use to describe it.
If you want to appreciate this game, you have to look for what’s under the surface: under the SD art, under the moments of comic relief, under the crapload of references to older FF games, so you’ll see what this game is all about. And the reason why it is so underappreaciated, it’s because it is hard to do that, to look under the surface. It’s easier to stop at what’s right in front of your eyes and never go deeper, yeah. But that ruins all the fun, doesn’t it? 🙂
The gameplay may be a step back in some ways (The ATB is way too slow I admit), but the overall mechanics of the battle system didn’t bother me. Plus I liked the fact that your party was broken down into different character classes. Something that is missing from most modern day RPG’s. It adds a degree of depth to the game when you’re party members have roles vs. making everyone a demi-God. Give it a shot. It’s a fairly good blend of old and new school RPG elements in one package.
And after much thought, I recently realised after replaying it for the first time in nearly 10 years that it beats out Ace Attorney 3 {Trials and Tribulations} as my personal favourite game of all time…which has admittedly been a tricky thing considering that game is freaking awesome. XD;
Me and my fiancee are cosplaying as Zidane and Garnet {Princess Dress, not regular} at Atlanta’s AWA this year – we’ve both agreed {after much playing and discussion} that it actually beat her long time favourite of 4 as her personal favourite FF after never having played it before because of the negative comments people made of the game at the time…she missed out on it, and now it’s one of her all time great games, same as mine.
Meh, it doesn’t make everyone happy…but to me, I’d much rather play this and have my attention engaged by Zidane, the quirky thief Genome with a tail and fun personality as a character than Squall or Cloud, at any rate…they just came across as unlikeable to me, same with the rest of the cast of those particular games. Anyhow, yeah – That’s my 2 Gil on the subject…make of it what you want! 😛

You are GOD.
Yeah, I went said it – I liked them, moreso than the character graphics of 8 – fancy that!
I have almost the same opinion, except that the game was visciously marketed through viral campaigns but nobody took any notice because the games title was never mentioned. The characters appearing in the campaign were:
Brahne, Beatrix, Kuja, The Tantalus Crew, Gilgamesh (Alleyway Jack) and Vivi.
Brahne, Beatrix, Kuja, The Tantalus Crew, Gilgamesh (Alleyway Jack) and Vivi.
What the hell were SE thinking with that maneuver? That’s foolishness if I ever saw it. Not even the main character?!?! I mean . . . man . . . wtf. . . . They’re gonna be hearing from me about that one! One of the best games of all time will probably not even be remembered in ten years . . . maybe five . . . all because SE predicted precisely so and marketed it as such. SHAME ON THEM.
Yep.
If you want to know why Smarty & I hate IX.
Check Most ingnored Final Fantasy Thread in the last three pages I guess…
Final Fantasy 9 was a fine game. Get off your high horse and give me some real reasons why it sucks.
Just to clarify I enjoyed the storyline. While there is a boatload of other things wrong with it, the storyline and soundtrack must be the only two things I enjoyed.
I agree with you, my brothah.
That would piss me off SO BADLY >:( But, I can’t imagine this game would cost much to pick up at a Gamestop or someplace similar. You must embrace the mighty FFIX, my friend! You must, for it is the greatest thing ever!
OMG! Is that a ShamWow! lmao
The only problems I have with it are, 1. Tetra Master (confusing, you don’t gain anything except Rebirth Ring, can only carry 100 cards), 2. Getting AP for characters who haven’t been in the party in a long time, 3. There are a hell of a lot of hidden treasure items (essentially requiring a guide to get them all), and 4. Getting pwned by Grand Dragon who shows up unexpectedly on the Forgotten Continent.
Well, let’s see:
1: Yeah, tetra master may look a little confusing, but it’s actually a lot more simple than I remember 8’s card game being – even my fiance, who HATED 8’s game admitted that this game was a lot more forgiving with it’s rules.
2: I suppose they assumed that you’d already know who your main party was at a particular point anyway, so the second party of 4 became a little less of an important issue – but considering you have plenty of time to grind when you switch parties, it’s more of a slight annoyance that you can fix with some time investment more than a real genuine problem.
3: Well, we’re all aware of the Guidbook fiasco – and I pity the fools who went for a 100%, only to be told a few years later that it’s virtually rendered both Impossible AND Pointless with the last Steiner weapon…Dick move, Square, Dick move! D<
4: All I can say is it’s always best to have some absorbing items for grand dragons – there’s plenty of Equipment capable of converting their thunder/earth attacks into health, if you know what to look for, and where to look!
Still, glad you enjoy it…I personally love it a great deal more than 7 and 8! 😛
It’s not even just "worth playing". It’s a damn good game.
Seconding this comment!
As am I. AGAIN, if I did already.
Then I’m glad I have it 😛
As for the music, it’s one of the largest I have to say lol. But the music is really good! Like all FF games, the soundtrack fits really well. There were certain parts I never liked but in all really, it fits.
FF is one series.
lol, that’s funny. Oh.. is that ANOTHER great invention?
And Excalibur II in FFIX sucks, that was not squares best idea

Never found it.
You have to beat the game in under 10 or 11 hours. If that’s done, when you go to get Excalibur, you’ll instead get Excalibur II.
Yup. And is why it sucks. The sword is very powerful sure, but to get it, you must ruin the game. You can’t enjoy all the good stuff about it, you’re just stressing for hours to hurry, hurry, hurry.
Yeah i was excited to play Majora’s mask cause I’m a big Zelda fan. I was soooo disappointed in it.
That’s where the Song of Time, Song of Double Time, and Song of Inverted Time come in.
The game allows you to fully focus on parts of the game by slowing time down or skipping ahead to hurry things along. You can reset time to do it again and again or explore something else.
I love it.
Not to mention you can rape the bosses with Oni-Link over and over. xD
I wish I could do the same in Ocarina of Time, fighting the bosses again for kicks. Also wished it had more sidequests like Majora’s Mask. Same goes for Twilight Princess – it really needed sidequests for more fun. Boss creatures were also fun to fight, and at least they threw in that 50-floor mini-dungeon in the Gerudo Desert. Fighting 4 Dark Nuts simultaneously was no easy task. It felt so good to beat them at the end, now I’d like to try that Action Replay code that turns any of the small, easily-broken rocks into Dark Nuts. Also turns pumpkins into Dark Nuts. Imagine an Ordon Village with a platoon of Dark Nuts thirsting for Link’s blood, lol.

I still definitely intend to focus on Majora’s Mask one of these days when I have some time, because I do love it, it’s just the whole time limit seems sort of daunting for someone like me who doesn’t have all day to sit and play games. It looks amazing, and the transformations with the masks is a very intriguing idea Nintendo had.
Also, I think I’m one of the only people who a.) LOVES Twilight Princess, and b.) didn’t mind the lack of sidequests. It’s simply an incredible game in every way, to me at least. It’s got a great soundtrack, great graphics, great gameplay (speaking as one who’s only played the Wii version), and imo, a great storyline.
That 50-floor dungeon did conquer me again and again, though :O So much so that I never completed it :O
LoZ’s not for you then. xD
I’ve got the TP soundtrack in my ipod for on-the-go listening. \m/_ d^.^b
