IMHO Angel Beats! is mediocre at best, if you compare it to the other works by KEY’s studio (AIR, Kanon, Clannad). Especially Kanon and Clannad show what KEY can do.

It’s a Key/Visual Art’s production and effuse the same odour as the rest in their catalogue: downbeat, supernatural romance animated to a very high standard. The team went for spinning out a comedy/drama this time though, of the slapstick kind at that. It worked on the whole but paid for it with being emotionally lighter than usual. On the up note, the soundtrack is definitely superior to Kanon’s and AIR’s.

Really? I rather think that that is why it is better. Maeda Jun can do popular vocal songs all right but his soundtrack for "AIR" and "Kanon" sound LIKE game music. I mean, I know he couldn’t help it being synthesized and all, but 1) synthesized music has sounded a lot better and 2) game music is soundtrack not particularly cheographed to the scene because games aren’t played at exactly the same pace everytime. On top of this, I also find that whereas with "Angel Beats" I came to identify moods or situations with particular tune or leitmotifs the music for "Kanon" and "AIR" is only ever able to have nice mood but never any feeling that resonates particularly with anything going on in those series; probably because their soundtracks have been written TO BE game music, which for reason I’ve already said has to be to an extent neutral to play through whatever segments of the game they accompany.
