Enjoy & Please Say Thanks π
Could very well be I uploaded it from two different places and they sound different {as in sound quality} either way Im enjoying the preview , Ill just wait for my cd in the mail. The efforts are Greatly Appreciated tho guys. In no way looking a gift horse in the mouth.
I wait the return of john williams for the part 2 !!! π
This sounds to me suspiciously like a confirmation that Williams will not be working on Part 2. What a world we live in where a director virtually has JOHN WILLIAMS knocking down his door, begging him for the chance to score his movie and even offering to come out of retirement for it… and the director says "No cheers, I’ve got somebody else."
:/
I’m also not impressed with Desplat’s score. It’s good (though it isn’t that much of a challange to be better than the last two films) but let’s be honest, Hannigan’s game score will blow this music away. Now that I had the chance to listen to the concert version of the Main Theme (Thanks Tango) I’m certain of it.
Edit: It is generally accepted that Williams has retired from film scoring; aside from his work with Spielberg, he only takes projects (very occasionally) that specifically interest him. Thank God he’s still fit and healthy and working in other areas… but his career in film music is well and truly over.

I may not be the biggest JW fan… but he’d sure do a hell of a better job then this one… its ok, but not really that memorable… so far to me desplat’s best score is to Hostage.
He’s basically retired, he hasn’t done a movie that didn’t have anything to do with his old mate Steven Spielberg since 2005.
Semi-retired I’d say. He’s still composing stuff outside the ‘filmworld’ though. π
I know, I mean I had nigh hopes for this one… I thought it was suppose to have the theme john williams created… this is nothing like it :/
The problem with this one is there are no themes to speak of, full stop. It feels – for the most part (there are exceptions) like a succession of nicely orchestrated (with occasional pointless electronic burbling) gestures held together with nothing. I just cannot fathom why this would happen; I stand by my original thought that Desplat is so much better than this.
People are giving this thing five stars. I can only think this is because they’re so starved of good Potter music after Hooper’s conspicuously poor attempts (another composer who is immeasurably better than his scores would give you cause to believe) that they’ll kid themselves this is wonderful. It’s not. There’s some rip-roaring action music in there, the like of which we’ve not heard in live action Western cinema for quite some years – Sky Battle, for example (1:20 to 2:10 – how I have MISSED fast brass runs, woodwind flourishes, and sensible symphonic use of percussion, and the harmonic work at 3:04 where a lovely antiphonal chord bursts out from a single trumpet note – Desplat channels Goldenthal ) and it’s making some of the right "fantasy score" noises… but it is, for me, completely devoid of every single ingredient that makes a memorable score.
The problem at the moment is I keep listening again and again and again and feeling myself hating it less. If there had been some thematic glue, this could’ve been a really exceptional score. As it is, it feels like heaps and heaps of potential, ultimately unrealised… but tantalising all the same.
Hopefully the score does work and i have no doubts so give it time.

with hooper’s scores i had listened to the score before i saw the movie and i hated the score. Now i love it because it seemed to work with the screen. we also have to think that desplat’s music has images with it and we are only getting half the picture at the moment.
Hopefully the score does work and i have no doubts so give it time.
Great scores are great because they’re good music that, when married with their intended film add another dimension, but can also stand alone.
I wonder if scores like Star Wars and Lawrence of Arabia, and even the first Harry Potters, would have stood the test of time had they been conceived (and executed) as background music. I’m sure they would have roughly served their purpose in the most conservative possible view of film scoring, but they would have been otherwise forgettable and not at all noteworthy. Thus so with Desplat’s effort herein under discussion.
This score is very dark and introspective. Maybe that is what is the film. Don’t know. Don’t care. I find Desplat uneven. But his score for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is, like the film, masterful.
Thanks for the upload, though! π
Edit: Ministry of Magic is now my fav track. Makes me think of the Muggle Registration Commission etc from the books, which is actually one of the few things I found actually interesting in the 7th book – the pot was getting empty by the end of the HP series IMHO. Repetitive, too short, but good.
Actually all the songs during the Ministry part sound superior to the rest of the score IMHO. Actually somewhat playful and fantasy-sounding.
I actually hope so, cause then that would mean there’s a chance that the music may actually turn out to be good!
PLEASE BE FAKE.

The op even lists the Nov 16th release date in his post. I’m not bothering to click on this.
Come on guys…you’re smarter than that… It’s the promo score – an early release.. It’s the official 73 minute album, pair it up with iTunes, amazon, whatever.. It’s Desplat through and through..and its beautiful…Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean its not legit -_-
Booklet says tracks 3, 4, and 7 contain Hedwig’s Theme. Shame, it should be the beginning of track one! When it does appear, it is either: quietly at the very end of the track or stretched out with each note being a quarter note long or just half the theme.
The soundtrack feels like Desplat took William’s themes and put the notes in a new order.
I am so relieved to at least read some who find this soundtrack unacceptable. Majority of Mugglenet users will stamp anything labeled "HP" as good, even this. Are composers just too prideful of their own work to use themes from other composers?
Never have been a huge Desplat fan but this score is good, hard for me too pick a favorite I enjoyed the Goblet of Fire score if I remember , I need to listen to these again.
Im not sure how feelings are but it might be a nice compromise to let John Williams co write part two with Desplat.
I still cant believe they would "diss" John Williams for part two but I do understand wanting to keep the consistency of the music.
Maybe they can let John Williams write a huge grand finale suite that would play at the end of the movie.
I know Im a Dreamer but hey , why not π
‘… I would take every opportunity to use the fabulous theme composed by John Williams. I’d say it has not sufficiently been used in the latest movies, so if I have the opportunity and if the footage allows me, I’m going to arrange it…I shall make it with great honour and pleasure.’
I guess Im a bigger fan of the good Wizard than I choose to say π I was going to get a Wand from Harry Potter Land at Universal but its 30 bucks and this set would be more use to me being a film score person.
and I can use Christmas present as a excuse to buy it π
I can’t wait for his work on Tintin!! This movie sounds like a crazy challenge for Spielberg and Williams…
People here will be very demanding because Tintin is more than famous in Europe. I hope that Spielberg will respect the graphic novel as close than it’s possible… It’s a masterpiece in graphic novels here!
I am and will always be a huge fan of Mr. Williams. I had the opportunity to attend to two of his concerts in London. His music live sounded even better then on cd. His music for Star Wars, Raiders, Jaws, ET and Schindler’s List will survive for many centuries to come, I’m really convinced of that! He will always be respected as a truly classical filmcomposer.
But, please guys, give Desplat a chance! It is not easy to step in the Maestro’s footsteps…
I’ve always loved John Williams’ themes for Harry Potter, but , except for Azkaban, I found his score- and action-writing for HP rather mediocre and somethings even boring. I love Hedwig’s theme, but it always reminds me a little bit of Darth Vader’s, which is and always will be my nr 1 favorite theme.
As I am writing this reply, I am listening to Desplat’s effort. He has done what he has promised: using Hedwigs Theme in alle kinds of ways and variations. The problem with Hedwigs theme is that, if you change one note of it, it doesn’t sound like Williams anymore. So I understand you guys that there isn’t enough of Hedwig’s in the Score, but I also understand Desplat not wanting to quote Hedwig litterally all the time. I think it’s Desplat’s respect for Williams and his own drive for creativity not wanting to do that.
So Hedwig is there, but only very subtle, disguised, variated.
I find this score far more dan mediocre… On the contrary, as a true Desplat fan and listening all the time to his scores, I consider this score as one of his best… It’s very consistent in style, the music is , technically spoken, very rich, the orchestration is very fresh and transparant and there are strong new themes in it!
I think this music will work superbly on the movie.
Maybe we will have to wait until we have heard all his music before we judge (and some condemn) it.
Bus we must give Desplat a chance: he is one of the best we have at the moment!
I don’t have a problem with Desplat or with him not being John Williams. I don’t even have a problem with the lack of Hedwig’s Theme – it’s a good theme, but it’s just a theme; it’s not one of Williams’ very best and Potter can survive perfectly well without it. And, frankly, any composer who is quoting too liberally from his predecessor is starving himself of opportunties for creative. As Potter composer number FIVE, it would be tempting to just play that theme again and again, wrap it up in a bit of Williamsesque orchestration, and that’s job done. Kudos to Desplat for not doing so… but at the same time he has squandered his opportunity.
My problem is that this is essentially a themeless score; the brief moments where Hedwig’s theme does show up only highlight how melodically barren the rest of it is. Desplat is a man made of themes… so where are they in this score? I absolutely respect you when you say you like it because of strong themes… but I find none. Yes, there are thematic fragments and motifs, but calling them themes in the traditional sense of the word is pushing a point. Memorable they are not. Strong they are not. They are functional, timid, and boring.
Fifty years from now, we will have film music concerts around the world and the music that is played will be Hedwig’s Theme. Not because the world will not accept anybody but Williams, or because Hedwig’s Theme is the best theme ever composed… but because it is a recognisable, memorable piece – a splendid translation of the world of Harry Potter into music.
Desplat had the opportunity here – and I don’t think the importance or timing of it can be overstated – to write a truly magical, melodic, memorable, instant classic Fantasy score. On a franchise as big as Potter, it could’ve been the tipping point that brought traditional scoring techniques back to the forefront in Western cinema. And I know Desplat is one of the handful of contemporary composers who could’ve pulled it off… and yet we have a beautifully orchestrated (take a bow, Conrad Pope) superlatively performed (the LSO is flawless and flamboyant) but emotionally and thematically very anonymous piece of work.
It never offends… but it never pleases either. I listen to it, and I find myself impressed with the orchestral balletics and remarkable maturity in writing… but it only makes me hungry for Williams’ scores…
Peace π

In the end, it’s all a matter of taste: some will like Desplat’s effort, some won’t. And that’s a good thing: discussing about music is a way to make it survive…
Hate you? Not at all… π
sorry to the others for me being such a pain in the ass π
I don’t like the dated style of Williams but I must say I like this a lot (sorry :p) . I would have hoped for a little more gothic screaming choirs but the instrumentation and orchestration is top notch.
Fantastic

after about three listens of the album I have come to the conclusion that it is a very good album. The opening doesn’t quit on giving me goosebumps when I hear it and the overall quality is great.
Fantastic

What Main Theme are you talking about?
This is certainly not a bad score. I am however a bit disappointed. I expected a more Golden Compass-like score. I was very glad to hear when Desplat mentioned he would be using the original Williams’ themes and that the other composers did too less with it. But after listening to the score I didn’t notice any more use of the themes than f.e. Hooper did. But this is better to be heard in the film. This is once again a total different score than the scores of the previous composers. I do actually like the score and it’s very good orchestrated. But is don’t really like it as a Potter score.
I pre-ordered my copy of the collector’s edition and am curios to listen to the extra tracks.
Is Williams retired? He’s just scored the first Tintin film, and he’s scoring Spielberg’s next two films. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back for the fifth Indiana Jones as well.
You’re not the first one to say that! >< Okay, he is semi-retired, and only score movies for his old friend Steven Spielberg. So it seems anyway.
While in general I would agree, the last couple of Harry Potter trailers seem to hinge on Hedwig’s Theme — they’ve used various EPIC arrangements to close out the last couple of trailers — and then the music is conspicuously missing from the film the trailer is advertising.

a little greedy eh?

whispers: it’s lossless…it’s all lossless….
but I still think Williams can do far better
Isn’t it enough to be able to sample a soundtrack before it’s officially released? Some people want the moon on a stick…
Agreed. BUT, it’s so pity, but it is official = Desplat will be official composer for the second part. Nor Williams, nor Hooper
\\
\\
Indeed, I read about this too..
Well, rather Desplat than Hooper. I still think Hooper even has more magic in his music which is a good thing for the Potter scores. But this score is much darker then one would expect for a Potter score. Then again, this story isn’t located in Hogwarts. So that will probably be the main reason why Desplat scored this the way he did. But I really miss the Harry Potter magic within the music. Hope Desplat will introduce it more in the next film.
