Try Ez7z for mac. It’s either that, or megaupload is skrewed up.

Tried WinRar on 1 PC and 7-zip on another with no luck.

dude, this is amazing! sounds much better than all these stupid transcodes! how the hell did you get your hands on the original master tapes?! i wish i could get them from other games to mess with, hehe.

one last question: why are there clean cutoffs @ the 20khz frequencies like 320kbps mp3s would have? i thought this is a lossless release?

Well, cassette tapes have a low high frequency response, sadly. Also, I am good friends with the son of the guy who mastered the original recordings. He made and mailed me copies on cassette. The cassettes are analog, so it does sound better than that burned to the CD release. But, yes, they, sadly, have a 20khz cut off. Btw, 20k cut off for a cassette is very good, most cut off at 15k. My parents have a very expensive Sony home theater cassette player (might have a frequency limit of 20khz prob why its a clean cut, I did run a fidelity restoration through them, so any highs that are audible and didn’t show up, were resynthesized, so no quality lost there), I ran the recordings through that in to my mac in Audacity. Recorded at 24-bit/96khz. Edited those hi-fi files, then when all was finished, (’bout a month later), dithered and uploaded. That should clear up any questions concerning the audio quality. =) Hope you all enjoy this treasure! =)

Knew you would love it! So much work went into this album mostly because the EQ on the original recordings was so skrewed up. But I think I really made the acoustics and details shine on this remaster. Thanks for listing to it. 🙂

Thanks so much for this! The Skyrim trailer really got me in the mood for Morrowind’s soundtrack – something about the themes in that game just grab, so much more memorable than Oblivion’s soundtrack (which was pretty darn good, itself). It’s fantastic to have a high-quality collection to loop over and over and over until November 😉

EDIT: Wow, I don’t want to think how this sounded before…the samples used for this are pretty bad. Did they use any live instruments for this score at all?

Jeremy Soule never used live instruments. He always worked with synthesized music. Skyrim is also synthesized.
I myself am a great fan of his work, and he does improve all the time over the years. One of the best composers around, his works in Morrowind, Oblivion and Knights of the Old Republic are one of the best.
Those samples all in all are kind of Soule’s trademark. His style is very unique.

P.S- Does Jeremy Soule really not use a live orchestra when recording? I realize the mixing/production can sound synthy at times… but your tellin me he wrote the entire score of Oblivion on a keyboard???!?!

If so, we truly have ourselves a new Mozart. That man was already a god in my book.

I went ahead and ran a noise removal and click removal on the tape, and eq’d it to make it flatter. Ran it through a 1-bit digital to analog converter, ran it through my home theater tube setup downstairs before that, and after that to get the ‘original’ tone…

I then worked out many things in LAME mp3s crappy encoder, and made my own, which is over 4 times the quality of aac at 128 vs mp3 at 128. the 128 mp3 of my custom encoder sounds lossless, except for the frequency cut off, which I leave on. Even though the 320 kbps mp3s have a 21k cut off, my systems max frequency response is only 20k, so you are getting pretty much lossless with my 320kbps release. Plus, I am low on bandwidth for the month, don’t want to go over my limit by uploading FLACs….

I’m always learning new techniques for mastering/remastering audio. I have a job running a studio with a friend, and I have completed over 100 studio demos these few months all by myself, a couple which have been signed. Good for a 17 year old eh? Muhahahaha! 😉

Yes, this will be another remaster… Probably be my last, since the remaster I am going to do does compete with most audiophile recordings, this last remaster will blow you guys away!

Well when I go to the Eastern Music Festival this summer, I’m studying viola professionally, I will upload the hi-res rips since they have 64mb/sec internet there…. =)

Also, the first remaster was complete fail haha, if you havn’t already downloaded the ones I just uploaded and remastered, I might have to go over there and slap you 😉

Seriously though, you have to give them a listen and see how far my education in audio mastering/remastering has come since the first remaster =)

I uploaded this in FLAC because I had alot of complaints about it not being in FLAC. I included the old remastered album art, but there is a new one, and a back side of the album art that has the names of the songs, also remastered.

Oh, I also figured out that it wasn’t the reciever that had the 20k limit, it was my sound card! So now, I’m gonna record it with a PC and a dedicated sound card and see how it turns out =D

Releasing them makes me feel like I am insulting the composer of this amazing soundtrack…
If you all can live with Oblivions OST from directsong.com which is at 320, then you can live with my remaster at 320, which btw, the quality of my remaster is identical to oblivion’s.

I listen to Morrowind’s remaster and Oblivion’s directsong.com release on my iPod on shuffle, and you cannot tell a difference between the albums, it is like they are from the same album… =O
The fidelity is equal, the stereo panning is equal, the volume is equal, the sound floor is equal, everything about both albums sounds completely professional, plus the album art included in my remaster is pretty awesome in my opinion…

Weird… I have the Oblivion soundtrack in FLAC. How is that possible then? Flac being better and all… maybe I have a direct CD rip? Much thanks if you could shed any light on the subject. Or maybe someone can just post a link to the highest quality rip available for Oblivion??? Now that would be glorious.

This so far is the highest, the one i found on google that claimed to be FLAC was the 320 converted to FLAC… :/

Forget where i found it, but it’s 248MB and in FLAC… just checked… (Reign of the Septims is 8.69MB) but after I googled "Oblivion soundtrack FLAC" I believe it’s the exact rip you refer to…. SHITE.

I may comment to OP’s work I think.. I just listened to most of it. You did a very well job at making this sound less ‘muddy’, which often happens with orchestral recordings which have not been mastered properly. Though, listening through an AKG k701, I cannot help but notice the equalisation was very much based on your own sound system, rather than a neutral sound source. You left a very distinct mid-range boost to it, dampening much of the original bass. This creates a rather strong bias towards all the mid-range instruments such as strings and brass

If any of this holds truth to you, you could put in the extra bit of effort to produce a sound-system neutral sound. I can tell you’re the real deal, and this recording is also the real deal because it actually contains more songs than Morrowind did lol.

Seconded, I’ll stick with one of the earlier versions of this rip, which imo has more of the original bass 🙂

This time, I will try and listen to it in as many sources possible, including cellphones, tv speakers, speaker setups at Best Buy, ect…. I hope I will please you with this next release I shall do this week….

Alright, so I just got done making my changes, I played it through 5 cell phone speakers, comparing it to other recordings of classical music, made my changes, the car audio department at Best Buy, although I got the weirdest faces blasting numerous classical music songs, still wrote down my changes, ect…
I finished playing it through a total of 48 different devices, and the recording FINALLY sounds like a commercial classical recording! You guys are going to die and go to heaven when you hear this.

Anyway, I am uploading, keep a eye on the first post. Also, would you guys rather have NERO AAC at 400kbps VBR, or mp3 LAME 3.98, 320kbps CBR with my custom settings?

Hello all,
Assett1 has simply left the entire forum and website because he felt he had committed so much that he was simply unable to work up to his expectations he had created.
I, his mentor in audio has retired in the studio environment and Kris asked me to drop by, give the news to the forums and ask if I could finish his huge project for him. Kris is now working full time in the studio with a band a week. Not only that but he is pursuing a double major in school and has found that he has little to no time to work on side projects. He said, with a small tear in his eye, that he misses you all and would like me to take his place.
I agreed that I would slowly but surly finish up his project with the Metroid Prime Trilogy and his list of other projects.
I hope you all forgive him and start looking forward again to these releases: Majora’s Mask, some Pokemon Games (Fire Red, Leaf Green, and Emerald), as well as Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX.
The releases will be slow but will be done.
