Gunsmith Cats DVDrip thread (1995 – Mediafire – FLAC+mp3 Vbr)

This thread is more or less in response to frequent (well, not that frequent, but still) requests for the OST of the anime Gunsmith Cats.

Problem is, the OST was never released. there is a vocal album, an ost called "Ost from radio", but it doesn’t features anything from the anime (guess it was a drama OST), and an image album that doesn’t feature music from the anime either. So I decided to see if it was possible to edit something based on the french DVD I have.

And here is the result. so far I’ve only done the first two episodes. The audio has been extracted from the french DVD for Ep.1 and from a demuxed MKV file that had a 5.1 sound for ep.2. FLAC has only been used to avoid further damages to the audio data, I don’t claim anything here to be lossless.

the music was composed by Peter Erskine, who is, among jazz fans, considered as one of the best drummers in this music genre. Now, on with the show !

A little note, to anybody who would like to shoot down these files: this is a labor of love. My intent is neither to challenge copyright nor to make money, just to provide fans of "Gunsmith Cats" a mean to listen at the music from their favorite anime without having to pop in the DVD. And if anything, the sound is really not good enough to damage the sales of any official album that would appear in shops. not that this will happen, anyway :sad:.

Volume 2: Gunsmith Cats : Swing High!

First things first: this one, even in its flac incarnation, is everything but lossless. Turns out the US dvds had a 5.1 audio track, and a DVD rip I found had it too, but encoded in 187kbps AAC. Flac has been used to avoid more degradation. for those with small connection, a VBR v0 version is up too, as it doesn’t destroy "too much" data.

Just a side note: Track 14 was left unaltered. If I took out the sound effects, a big part of the music went away too. so I decided to leave it be, with tires screeching and a little gunfire to reflect the big pursuit scene of the OVA. For the rest of the tracks, I’ve tried to muffle dialogs and SFX as much as possible, considering the base material.

Available as MP3 VBRV0 or as FLAC.

Criticism are welcome, as long as they are argumented and don’t just consist in a "This sucks there still are a lot of SFX".

One last thing: please do not redistribute this, or at least gimme credit !;)

I tried again. And it really gives me error of the files being corrupted somehow. I first thought it was because I used rar to take the files, but I used 7z and it is saying the same. Sorry about that. :/

password is still CZ-75. Maybe that comes from the files being 24bits flac files and not 16 bits as I usually use.

or that could come from the fact the files are 48000hrz instead of the usual 44100hrz, thought I doubt this is the source of the PB.

I downloaded 3 of flac. The first , the second my internet stopped the download by herself. The third flac was to see if it was my problem

You made a nice job with enhancing the instruments (i think you did XD) . The voices do not bug me. In fact it is making me to get my VHS tape to see this ova 😛
The opening theme it was the only around the web. and that I have. Curiously… there was a drama cd right after the OVA the worked like a Episode 4. And I think the soundtrack is the same. I remember Ova Opening theme being there. I will have to check my collection. 🙂
But hey. these rips… at least we have them. 😀

I uploaded stuff and asked feedback. And I had 20 downloads and no feedback at all. No even a "FU** YOU"

DL’ed the flac. Unpack fine, but they don’t play correctly. It plays in VLC like if I put the volume super low and sped it up alot.

crappy crapo. I don’t know what causes this. I’ll re-encode the flac files from Audacity and re-up them tomorrow. In the meantime people will have to do with the mp3.

My first guess on Peter Erskine was that the soundtrack was a album of him. But a guy made a research for me, and I remember he found an interview with him about that. He claimed a soundtrack release was never in his mind.

I know. I asked him by email once. he was kind enough to answer my question. seems he doesn’t think of this as one of his best works, so he didn’t insist to get it released. for him it was just a "command". that and he didn’t get much liberty on the composition. but he hinted that there probably wasn’t much of a market for the OST either, as Jazzy OST were relatively rare in the 90s. before, in the past, there were a lot of these, afterward we got Kanno’s works, and others, but in the nineties ? not so much.

I’ve got good news and bad news.

good news: I’ve reuploaded the flac file, which should now work for everybody.
bad news: the audio for eps 2 and 3 hasn’t been mixed in the same ways as for ep 1. In other words: No way to get rid of ANY vocal part or sound effects. So unless I can find a better audio source, I’m going to stick working on improving ep. 1 OST.

Found a 5.1 mix for the ep 2-3. Of course, the quality won’t be as good as it come from an Mkv file, but still…At least it’ll be easier to extract the music :).

Here I saw and it was broadcasted as a movie. all 3 episodes in one. 🙂
A few years later, when I found some info, I thought there were 2 more movies. I was so hyped to see them. After all, this is all we have. 🙁
I really loved the animation, and the direction was gorgeous. The pursuit of this episode 2 is great. Another thing that got me into it, was the SHELBY COBRA. Damn, the car was draw in such a realistic way. You could almost feel that car was real. Yep, no anime like old days. Noting beat That!!

"Here we go!" even with sfx, is addictive. This is my favorite track of all the soundtrack. I love it. Thank you. ^.^

In some parts you could easily hide the voices and sfx, on others it looks like the sfx are higher then some tracks. But it is audible..
Covers are cool too. 🙂

that’s why it’s blocked, unless the music is released via an OST, it’s … well considered more illegal than an OST floating around the net. Just rename the files something else… like GSCUS1; it won’t know what to make of it.

Plus, since there was an English Dubbed release of the anime, it’s technically considered copyrighted in the states.

It is a shame too. This is not the first time that the copyright owners have gone after and removed access to fan-created media. Even though the tracks themselves are copyrighted, the hard work and dedication that docrate1 has clearly put into this is not being sold nor paid for. Add to this that quite a few of these tracks were not released to any official OST and you have an interesting case for a "fair use" defense.

Regardless of the legalese, and being an avid fan of Sonoda’s anime, I am hoping that someone in their kindness and convenience can provide access to these great collections once again. 😀

I really think it is interesting when some free music labels that I deal with use mediafire to spread their albums for free.

like back when map pack 3 of cod WAW was announced, everyone (including myself) went crazy over the theme song, and then some people just took the audio, placed an image, and uploaded to YT. that was fucking stupid.

Well, the answer is pretty simple: working from the source I was able to find, it’s impossible for me (keep in mind, I’m not audio engineer) to suppress completely the SFX without mucking up the music. So I tried to keep as little SFX as possible. I was able to erase it or reduce its volume on places, but not everywhere.
