I second that. After listening to the 30 second sneak peek on the selected tracks, Steve’s work reminds me of Trevor’s Armageddon, Hans’ Pearl Harbor, and his own Transformers: Dark of the Moon. A DEFINITE must purchase!!!!!!

I don’t mean to sound like a troll nor is it my intention to spoil the fun of the fans, I’ll just be glad when the RCP clan can actually produce something new and original for a change. The continuous sampled/orchestral sound of RCP, along with its influence on many other established composers (most recently Patrick Doyle with Thor, John Ottman with Unknown, and Lucas Vidal with The Raven), is beginning to wear thin. I wouldn’t be so bothered if that stocky sound wasn’t featured in every new score coming out these days. I pine for the good ol’ days of great composers like the late maestro Jerry Goldsmith successfully blending synth and orchestra without sounding too generic and also this was before the commonplace use of samples to create entire scores. It’s like composers these days don’t even try anymore and just go on autopilot and while some of you may find this blasphemous that’s what I find myself thinking every time I listen to any modern Zimmer scores. Inception and Sherlock Holmes are the only two "original" scores I remember hearing from Zimmer and even then I can still detect references from his earlier scores with little to no modifications; Sherlock Holmes being the most original. Even The Dark Knight (particularly the Joker’s theme) is almost a direct rip-off of another motif he wrote for another movie that I can’t quite place the title of. The more we buy into their music, the more unoriginal tripe they will continue to produce and the concept of originality will be abandoned in favor of style. Music is slowly turning into a joke but thank whoever is up there that we have record labels continuing to grace the world with classic scores that we all grew up with and/or are discovering for the first time outside of the film in either an expanded form or receiving their first album in so and so many years (e.g. Richard Bellis’ unreleased-for-21-years complete score for Stephen King’s IT which not only provided us with a chilling original theme for the antagonist but also offered some style and multiple original themes as well utilizing both synth and orchestra despite the film itself being lackluster [as was usually the case with book to movie adaptations at that time], Harry Manfredini’s unreleased-for-30-plus-years Friday the 13th Parts 1-6 complete scores, an uncommon occurrence at that time to utilize strictly orchestra to represent fear and tension rather than cheesy and sampled synths, and the coupe de grace of comic book films scores: Danny Elfman’s previously unreleased complete scores for Batman and Batman Returns which should speak for themselves). Okay, rant over. Commence your enthusiasm.
Man, music is evolving, that’s it, and we like that. If we follow your reasoning, we should totally disagree with FULL HD movies and 3D movies because yes, they didn’t existed 21 or 30 years ago.
With Inception or the dark knight, Zimmer created something extraordinary and never heard before, the composers that doesn’t adapt to the evolution of technologies and people taste in music won’t belong.
I get you don’t like RCP, but I just bet you love other scores that I love 😀

Well at least we see what happens with people (they are starting discussions) when they don’t get their stuff (i.e. soundtracks they want). 🙂
Interesting to see that it’s a discussion between them who want things to remain the same (I’m sorry cody, but to have a Goldsmith-like score every movie would wear thin to me too, innovation in music is what keeps it interesting and has effects on the succes of certain techniques and samples)…and those who go with the flow.
Anyway…as long as the soundtrack isn’t there, you’ll have to ignore this thread I guess 😉

Ha, don’t get me wrong. I fully support HD but not so much 3D as it is simply because so far it’s been a pretty hit and miss technology. It is evolving and one day may become more than it is now and when that day comes I’m sure I’ll embrace it more than I do. It’s just annoying to get amped up about a 3D upconversion being made for nearly every movie, even those that wouldn’t benefit much from it. It’s much more of a gimmick now than it was 20-30 years ago.

I totally agree with you, at the moment the only one who really knows about 3D is James Cameron with Avatar and Titanic, and it’s a shame 3 years after avatar, no signs of a talented 3D movie (maybe the hobbit ? i hope so)

Yeah, unfortunately I missed out on Avatar 3D in theatres but I did luckily catch Titanic 3D and I was pretty impressed with how it turned out and it changed my mind only slightly about 3D. My personal beef with the 3D technology is the need for the 3D glasses. It gets really exhausting on the eyes after awhile. I just can’t wait until The Abyss and Terminator 2 3D conversions. You can’t doubt that that is going to be sweet in 3D especially with James Cameron supervising it.
Speaking of John Williams, I was going back and listening to one of his older scores, The Fury, and the thing that amazes me is how you can hear the early influences of what will eventually become one of the Harry Potter themes in just the first track of the score. There’s definitely no mistaking it. The resemblance is almost as astounding as James Horner’s obvious Casper piano theme appearance in the Spiderwick Chronicles at random points. That’s why I’m rather intolerant of a lot of James Horner’s works: he has only a select few styles and they almost constantly reference each other and you don’t really get anything new or exciting. Where has he been these days?

Ok, first. Dimensioner, the process of creating a request post has been said many times lately, and is VERY clearly stated by a mod (Sanico). It is simply this: ANYONE can request ANYTHING they want at ANY time. No offense my friend, but let it go (self censorship here **is proud**). The beauty of this section is that it is all requests. So simply don’t bother with a post you personally do not like.
Ok. Ummm….I refuse to "go with the flow" as almost all of the "modern sound" scores bore me to tears. (Inception actually induces mt to vomit, just upon seeing the cover). I mourn for the days when the score for a movie is not just a wave of sound designed to make my head explode. I also cannot STAND 3-D, for the fact it makes me nauseous, and the fact that as a schitzo- affected person, I already see and hear things all around me, don’t need the movie crap on top of that. I do think the divide of tastes between "old" and "new" styles seems to be age driven though.
Now, as to repeated themes, I get that. As an example, yes Mr. Horner does indeed bring a lot of reused material to his table. Fortunately for me, it is a sound I can’t get enough of, so that is one reason I go for his stuff. I imagine for RCP fans, it is similar. The beauty of this site is the mixture of style, personality and taste. But the suggestion to learn to "cope" with "evolving styles" irritates me a little. Simply because not ONE of the last year and a half’s new offerings did I keep. Not one, I deleted them all as …well. And, those I got for free. Thank God I did not actually spend money on them. 🙂

Thanks, Amanda. Glad to see I’m not the only one around here. lol. Except of course we both know our opinions on 3D differ (need me to provide the visual imagery again?). I also have not found a single score from the last few years (apart from Insidious) that wasn’t for a 10-30 year old movie. The same level of quality from those days just does not carry over to this era. As Amanda puts it, it’s purely sound design nowadays and 9/10 times doesn’t make for repeat listening but I am aware that music is subjective and age does factor in so everyone’s going to have a different taste and opinion.
You should definitely listen to the music of Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky. I seems as if Williams is hugely influenced by this music. There are parts that are almost the same as the Potter main theme and another theme… Overall I think of Williams as a current day Tchaikovsky in terms of style.
