Video Games Orchestra – Awakening (Stream Recording)

Video Games Orchestra had a live event in Boston, MA last night and there was a live stream on the internet. I recorded it as best as the stream was coming through. Afterward, I trimmed the audience and conductor (both got kind of grating if you were just interested in listening to the music) out where applicable and split it into tracks. Below is the zip of the entire show with prim proper tagging.

If anyone wants to go in and try to adjust the volume on things, then by all means have at it. The source audio, obviously, was not ideal. You will hear an occasional pop or quick skip. Overall, it is highly listenable.

Haha, oh my God! This orchestra must be the most technically inept bunch of players the world has ever seen. And yet, they’re absolutely WONDERFUL. What they are is a miracle, plain and simple. A gigantic group of amateurs getting together, forming a full-sized symphony orchestra, and tackling complex orchestrations like these… it’s amazing. I’ve known of them for some time, but I think this must be their most ravishing concert to date.

This is what music is about; not commercialism, not snobbery, not exclusionism – it’s about people gathering together, working as the most wonderfully enormous team, and playing music they love. Who cares if they’re crap – they’re honest and the comraderie and humanity in these performances, in my opinion anyway, complete excuses their technical failings.

Thank you so much. This is truly what it’s all about.

Yeah, I was little bothered by the Radical Dreamers track, because whomever was on violin could simply not perform the backbone melody on that song. Shame… but overall the set was good stuff. Could use a little less Final Fantasy and maybe have some other more obvious choices, but whatever. They obviously have favorites.

FF really does get overdone… It’s great music, definitely, but anybody would think that it was the only game series ever made, the way it gets wheeled out every time a concert springs up.

Still, they were worth hearing, and the other stuff was fun too.

Well, I downloaded it for the second time now (the first one had an unspecified password) and there were some good moments but I don’t think they overshadowed the bad playing. Also, there were some really weird balance issues. At any rate, it was mediocre.

That sounds a bit harsh, but I still appreciate the upload and enjoyed parts of this. Thanks!

This is wonderful!!! I feel this is a huge step-up in recognition in VGM.

It turns into people like this, ordinary people, gathering up into large groups like this, to play the music they truly love! Instead of the rap songs or rock songs—NO—Video Game Music!

After listening, I noticed there was a concert held at Berklee Performance Center at the 5/8/2009 and the other one was at 3/5/2009 (or 12/5 as the original uploader stated for the livestream).

I am a bit disappointed by the one that was recorded here. The dynamic was much worser than the 5/8 concert and there were no additional singer (for Myst for example), and so on.

It’s still listen able, but the performance overall was a bit unbalanced. I recommend people to watch the (youtube) videos provided by "VGO" and "ihungerproductions", since they have a better sound quality overall, than the source provided by the live stream (it’s like the mic was placed only at one side). ^^;

But it provides more songs, and I’m in no way a critic, so enjoy it anyway.
