Funny, I was just logging in to ask an almost identical question.
The game will run on XP, but will it run well? I ended up buying the PSX version of FFVII after I discovered hours in that certain parts were unplayable on a modern computer. Is this true for FFVIII as well?
The answer is, yes — Final Fantasy VIII will play under Windows XP, but it might still be a toss-up depending on your computer system.

If you can run XP it’s modern enough. With FFVII I had problems even on computers that XP couldn’t be run on.
But 7 was one of the worst porting jobs I’ve ever seen.
Well you could buy it many years ago. I don’t think it was very successful, I haven’t seen it in stores in many years.
And yes, my computer is "modern," but it’s still several years old. The newest machines have a lot more power than mine does and might have problems with it.
P.S.: You can edit a previous post if you have something else to add.
it definitely runs and runs well
BUT…only runing it in software mode.
It can’t run in hardware mode becouse the card doesn’t support the 8-bit palleted textures anymore (but old cards do).
Oh..and some sound issues can be fixed by changing the "acceleration" level in the "Sound" section of dxdiag.Lowering it to "standard" or "basic" (Start->Run – type dxdiag and press enter)
and does this cd include "chocoboworld" as well, cos its a nice bonus to have it as well, and the only way to get the item "hero" is through "chocoboworld" as far as i know.
Download it from MyBittorrent.com.
I tried to find the link I downloaded from, but I seemed to have misplaced it again…
