I don’t think Shuyin was really a bad guy. The original Shuyin was a good friend and lover to Lenne, who just couldn’t accept the fact that he might lose her. Angered with the arrogance of his enemies, he tried to take control of Vegnagun, but Lenne showed up and said something to him, causing him to come down and them to reunite. By then, it was too late: the firing squad had showed up and they killed them both. Then, somehow, Shuyin’s consciousness got trapped in the Den of Woe and went mad, while Lenne’s was either trapped in the Songstress dressphere, or ported to it and some point. When YRP defeated Vegnagun, Shuyin was defeated and desparate, but Yuna changed to the Songstress dressphere and he saw Lenne. But something went wrong and he was able to see through to Yuna. Enraged, he went into last-ditch mode, fighting your characters and pulling out corrupt versions of Tidus’s four overdrives: Spiral Cut, Slice and Dice, Energy Rain and Blitz Ace. Finally defeated, he didn’t know what to do, but then Lenne’s consciousness separated from Yuna and she reassured the troubled Shuyin that he would be okay, telling him that she had a new song ("1000 Words.")
So what about the resemblance between the apperance of Lenne and Shuyin. Maechen sort of hinted at it, but he never offered a real answer.
Alright, but Shuyin, I think, is a ‘poor fool’, and a terribly unlucky one. His and Lenne’s is a sad story which always moves me to tears. I wish they’d been able to live happily. 🙁
But really though, it’s a metaphor. He’s not literally a shadow, but the Shuyin that we’re seeing is only a pale shell of the original Shuyin. A dark image created from the consciousness that was forced to relive the images of his and his lover’s deaths over and over again.
You’re right that Maechen never really explained it. He said the fact they look so much alike cannot be mere coincidence, but he never really went into detail.
Shuyin and Lenne’s story is sad… too sad… and i agree that Shuyin was never really a bad guy.
