Brother… Al Bhed, But Also German?

A while back, I was playing the game and Brother was babbling on about something. My Mom happened to be watching and asked me if he’s supposed to German or something. At the time, I told her that he isn’t and explained to her about the Al Bhed as best as one can to someone who’s never played a Final Fantasy game before. Now, I can’t help but wonder, though. He certainly sounds like he has a German accent. And even uses a little German: when you’re heading to the Thunder Plains for the concert, he’s all "Achtung, baby! To the concert grounds!" So I think that there is some sort of gag going there.

I never noticed anything in that direction. Al Bhed doesn’t ressemble German as far as my impression goes, and Brother certainly has some weird accent, but German? o_o I never got the impression.

I remember he actually said: "Achtung!"

And it sounded like the german word to me…

According to my Mom, "Achtung" means either "attention" or "warning." My guess is "attention," in that case, based on the context. "Uber-bad news" was in reference to the Awesome Sphere after they found what was on it.

I’d say "Achtung" means rather "Attention" than "Warning". For "Warning" you can say the much clearer "Warnung". But in spoken language, Achtung is a lot more natural, too, to throw in your sentences.

And using the word "uber" is rather a sign that he’s not German, to me. Frankly, English speakers use the word to replace "very". Germans don’t. And Germans say "�ber", not "uber".
Seems to me like Brother is just trying to be cool and crazy, thus using some pseudo-German, like I’ve seen a lot of Americans do it. It’s an attempt to imitate this kind of language. Bah, the word "�ber" is being violated in the worst ways by English speakers.

<font color=red face="comic sans ms">Yeah I know real Germans have the umlaut over the u, I was just being lazy and couldn’t be arsed to find out the alt code for that letter. :p Actually thinking about it, I can’t remember whether it was "uber" or "�ber" when Brother did say it. It probably was just "uber", so that doesn’t suggest German at all, I seem to see it being said like that quite a lot now to mean "very" anyway.

So yeah, it’s just Brother trying to look cool really, I wouldn’t say he’s German.

i have thought that he was german-based before. he does kinda sound it. i havent played x or x-2 in a while, but i remember hearing lots of accents in the game.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that the umlaut was not used in the game. That could be the programmers’ omission though, rather than Brother’s. P.S.: What exactly does "uber" (yes, with the umlaut) mean anyway? Misao – you mentioned that although it does not mean "very," people use it to say that, so I’m curious to know exactly what it does mean because I think I have seen it used in the proper context before. (But wasn’t sure exactly what it meant at the time.)

BTW, Meltigemini – I myself like to use the "Character Map" to find special characters, rather than messing around with the alt-codes. It’s pretty fast and easy. If you have Windows, then you probably have it. Check your accessories. If it’s not there, then it might be on an install disk somewhere.

And uber is used by English speakers. simple as that. 🙂
I suppose they love it so much because of Nietzsche’s "�bermensch". But German slang has other ways of expressing such ‘cool’ language. If I was to translate FFX-2 into German, I’d let Brother say:
"Boah. Das is’ voll krass schlechte Neuigkeit!" :laugh:

Also… I don’t know what kind of accent is used to pronounce Al Bhed, but it’s certainly not German. Otherwise it wouldn’t sound so damn strange to me. Otherwise I’d be able to pronounce it. I heard it was Slavic, which might be, although I’m not very familiar with these languages.

Well, I never thought of brother being a German. Hell no, not even a bit. Did he really say "Achtung"? Can�t remember this one…. But that doesn�t mean anything. I mean, everybody uses foreign words inbetween their own language…. (well, I do at least). 😉

Oooh, terrible. I wouldn�t translate it like that. That sounds like turkish/german or something. (Sonds like Erkan and Stefan, two comedians in Germany, the one is a Turk, the other one a German guy, but they both speak like they�re unable… :laugh: )

That�s what I was thinking, when I heard it. I thought, it sounds like one of those eastern language (Slavic, Russian, Rumanian or whatever).

I guess I can see Brother as being a jokey parody-ish version of a German person. He is a bit like that character Mike Myers did on SNL, minus the black clothes.

I wonder why they would’ve done that. I bet there’s a funny little story behind it. XD

Even if brother uses german words, this won�t make a German out of him. The same with his accent. Sorry, but it doesn�t sound german at all. 🙁

I can�t remember him using the word "uber", but one thing is sure, the Japanese people have a fable for Germany (don�t ask me why), so it never wonders me, when they throw german words inbetween. 😉
