I just bought my GameCube yesterday, which came with a free Gameboy Player and game. After having fun for 10 minutes playing FF Tactics Advance on the BIG screen, I put in my free game.
Now, I loved Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64 in the States). Back in the old days, I bought a Nintendo 64 for one reason – Perfect Dark. I never got around to getting it, but there were two games I did have, and played incessently – Star Wars Episode I: Racer, and Lylat Wars.
Sure, to an extent it was a Star Wars rip-off – the Arwing (R-Wing?) may as well have been an X-Wing, but the characters and locations were endearing. Who couldn’t identify with Fox McCloud, fearless fighter pilot? It was an example of good old fashioned Nintendo fun.
So, when I got my free game, I had a choice of four – Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Luigi’s Mansion, and Star Fox Adventures. Call me a heretic, but I find Smash Bros boring beyond all belief – even playing with my friends, I get over it in half an hour. Luigi’s Mansion I played a demo of, and Super Mario ditto, and both seemed like normal platform fare to me.
That left Star Fox Adventures. A game I knew nothing about, except it starred my favourite fox hero… uh… Fox. So take it home I did – and I have not regretted it since.
I’ve only just started playing it, but already I love it – now, Zelda has never really appealed to me, and Ocarina of Time wasn’t my cup of tea, and SFA emulates Zelda to a T. But I still love it. I can’t really explain why – I think it’s just the characters that needed to grab my attention. I haven’t got into the meat of the story yet, but already it promises to be an indepth, engrossing game.
The most disappointing thing is the Arwing sequences – but they’re still a blast. Sure, they’re exactly the same as Lylat Wars, but they have prettier graphics, so it’s ok by me. They’re SFA’s ‘gummi ship’ anyway, and they do a heck of a lot better job than that little nuisance in Kingdom Hearts.
So, first impressions – Fox McCloud kicking ass with a magic staff = cool. The fact that tis designed by Rareware makes it even better – I know i’m going to be playing a tight game the whole way through.
The only thing that i’m not looking forward to is the time-limit – FF Crystal Chronicles is Friday, and from what i’ve heard, SFA is a better game. But when The Twin Snakes comes out in a couple of weeks, Snake is going to require my full attention… so hopefully i’ll beat SFA before then ๐
…and no, I haven’t finished FF 10-2 yet. My PS2 is lonely. It will have to wait until after The Twin Snakes is done ๐
But I digress – is there anyone else here who owns / has played Star Fox Adventures? Share your experiences!
Well, in all seriousness, I guess it’s nice that there’s someone out there who does appreciate that game. I couldn’t stand it myself. Either way, enjoy your GameCube. It’s a wonderful system.
my friend….what (on god’s earth)is wrong with u?
i fill tooo hurt to say anymore!!!!
Star Fox Adventures is something to look into getting- our gamecube collection needs fleshing out, and since you and Merl are the same person I’m sure at least one person in our household will enjoy it.
I don’t think I have ever lost 1 on 1 when I play with Zelda/Sheik….

Lmao!
Play grabbed by the ghoulies and tell me that.
That or an arcade version. I’d go play it every day.
And I so own on Smash Bros. as Pikachu >=(
if only nintendo were interested in online gaming…that would be the best game ever….fact!!!!
I’d be wearing bullet-proof armor though…
When I get bored, I just put 3 level 9 computers on a team and fight against them all. I actually do rather well, but that’s because I’m what my brother refers to as "cheapass" and "item thief". Bah, winning is winning. Especially when I beat him and laugh. LAUGH I SAY.
Trust me, you aren’t nearly as good as you think you are.
I know… I always get my little yellow butt kicked ;_;
Which is why I bought Star Fox Adventures, and not Melee :p
