Let’s face it, pretty much everybody was disappointed when we found out that Wind Waker was going to be cel shaded. After seeing the incredible demo for the Gamecube at Spaceworld 2000, just about everybody expeced a great realistic Zelda. Well here it comes.
I was there ;_; Check out my topic!
Or, you can like mrmonkeyman and be there, covering the scene :p
And, like he said, it was a Pre-E3 briefing from Nintendo, one example of stategy they’d use to get the media on them during E3.
But that’s just my quirkiness. I like the whole cartoon look.
Mind you, this game has piqued my interest – it might actually be my first Zelda game. Unless it does turn out to be like OOT.
Heh I know people who didn’t get Windwaker just because it was Celshaded… they didn’t even bother reading about it or even trying it out! "Oh, it looks too cartoonish and childish", well screw you!
His face looks deformed ; ;, specifically his right (our left) eye.
And his eyebrows are too slanted.
Bring back good old sexy Link! ~insert NES picture~ 😛
Also, is it just me, or did the Spaceworld 2000 demo look a lot better?
Also: If i was gay… i’d do Link.
I’ve played WW for awhile now and I still don’t see what’s so "great" about it (check GameFAQ reviews). It’s not a bad game, but all the same, it…it feels to dry, like it’s missing something really important.
I beleive OoT was big because of
A) It’s new engine & graphics
B) Story (back in ’99, it wasa large improvement over many other game plots)
C) Freedom, side quests, etc. (you didn’t HAVE to follow a quest, etc.)
Other game had these atrributes sure, but OoT kinda’ hit the nail on the head..
I wonder if Nintendo can ever do that again..?
Or for that matter can Square make a game with an impact as big as FF7’s..?
Bottom line: Innovation is not that important. Who fucking cares if it’s as different as OOT was when that came out? If it’s got new stuff to do and is a fun and well-made game, then it ought to be appreciated for that. I don’t understand you people who can’t ever do the same thing twice in a video game. Aren’t you all Final Fantasy fans? Don’t you realize that the core game mechanics of that series have not changed dramatically since FF4?
So, the new Zelda is going to kick ass, just like Wind Waker kicked ass, and just like A Link to the Past kicked ass even though it was really just an enhanced version of the NES titles.
There’s just a shitload of things that has been repeated again and again in the 3D versions of Zelda, unlike Final Fantasy. One can only say the Z/L Targeting Concept is great a few times… we had about 3 times to say it already.
However, that still doesn’t mean we shouldn’t expect a few things to change…
I don’t mind that there are things that come back, it’s to be expected from a game of the same series. It’s just that Wind Waker felt to me that besides the graphics it ressembled Ocarina of Time too closely. Now, it wouldn’t have been a problem if it would have been a direct sequel but this wasn’t exactly the same, it was a very INdirect sequel.
I mean, you can tell it hasn’t changed much when the final boss is Ganon and the is ONCE AGAIN beaten by some combo of your best sword and your best arrows, see ? And that’s just an example.
Link to the Past was more than an enhanced version of the NES title. The first two NES titles, while being connected, had almost nothing to do with each other, they played very differently.
Link to the Past played mostly like the first Zelda, but it introduced a lot more elements that became staples for the series, such as the Master Sword, the three Goddesses that created the Triforce, the Mirror Shield and so on. But since that game it’s almost always like this, at least on the NON-portable versions :
– Three Goddesses created the Triforce using a part of their essence.
– Hyrule is threatened by some disaster caused by Ganon or one of his pawns.
– Link arrives, finds three random objects in three dungeons and claims the Master Sword.
– Princess Zelda gets kidnapped.
– Link has to do about 6 to 8 more dungeons, dungeons that are done by finding a map/compass/special item and then you go kill the boss of the dungeon with a combo of your sword and the special item you found in that dungeon. In the meantime, he also powers up the Master Sword once or twice.
– Link confronts Ganon and kills him using the Master Sword and the Silver/Light arrows.
In the end, I’m not saying that it’s necessarily bad, I just want the next Zelda to surprise me for a change. When it’s getting to the point where you can guess pretty much what will happen for the rest of the game after you’ve played for a mere hour I think there is a slight problem. Okay, I am exaggerating here but you get the point… Oh, and upping the difficulty would be good, too. Am I the only one who seemed to think that unless you do it on purpose, Link simply CANNOT be killed in Wind Waker ? lol
Anyway, like other Zelda games, this one interests me, we’ll see what becomes of it when it gets released.
Actually the way FF4 and up played, all games were pretty much different. Each has a different system. FF4 was pretty much standard fixed jobs, FF5 had the job/ability system, FF6 had the same standard fixed job but with added espers and a well-rounded character development… and on and on and on.
There’s just a shitload of things that has been repeated again and again in the 3D versions of Zelda, unlike Final Fantasy. One can only say the Z/L Targeting Concept is great a few times… we had about 3 times to say it already.
I said that the core game mechanics haven’t changed, not that nothing has changed at all. The battle system is still mostly the same. You walk around a world map, talk to people in the same way, advance the plot in the same way, etc.
You’re absolutely right that things like magic systems and special abilities are changed. But guess what? THAT ALSO HAPPENS WITH ZELDA! Majora’s Mask added in the crazy time-repeating element. Wind Waker added in the seafaring and map usage and whatnot. These are not huge changes, but they are about as huge as having a new magic system in an FF game.
Final Fantasy is totally different, you have to change your battle plan every time, where it went from just hitting A rapidly after equiping the right equipment to having to go around a grid to power up your stats. How Legend of Zelda went to Link’s Adventure, that was a huge change and either it was welcomed or not, it would of been a hell of a lot better than having to go through another 8 dungeons…. but, this is really just limitation of videogames back then. Seeing this same effect happen now, it’s a bit of a bitch when you just realize it’s the same battle system but… ooooh, I can counter and oooh… I can spin around rapidly and pick up objects and throw em… for the most part, they are just addons to the same engine.
This new Legend of Zelda, it seems to play a lot like the other 3D Legend of Zelda, that is what I’m not so confident about when I go and preorder it. It’s the 4th time… not the 2nd, not the 3rd… but the 4th time I am using the same exact techniques to go and beat the game. It’s a great battle engine and the gameplay for the most part are nice but other than the story and the graphics, what makes me want to say this game is better than the other game? I don’t want a OoT Clone, I want something new and fun.
I cannot wait for this new one too come out and i dont know if you mentioned it or not but do you know when this new zelda is comming out?
thanks
I don’t want a OoT Clone, I want something new and fun.
I couldn’t sum it better myself.
So, October 18 it would be, huh ? Well then, let’s wait and see.
