I mean, sure, the graphics and presentation of the story and gameplay itself is pretty fun (not to mention playing as a fairly decent representation of Venom), but most old-school purists are going to absolutely loathe the game.
I’ve heard that Manhattan is a bit smaller this time around, but I don’t really mind – I never found everything in Spidey 2 anyway.

You have a much more limited range of moves, but they are effective enough as they are.
You don’t have the automatic dodge button anymore, which took a slight bit of getting used to–you actually have to make Spiderman move out of the fucking way instead of tapping a button and him lean one way or another.
About all you get is the occasional increase in consecutive combo moves you can do and increases to maximum health.
Venom on the other hand… holy shit. That’s about all I have to say on that–other than the fact that Old School Venom would Web Swing like Spiderman, this one jumps like The Hulk. Kind of a put off on that, but it’s a minor thing.
Right now I’m just going around completing all the races and combat tours and stuff hoping to unlock Carnage as a playable character–even if he is a Venom clone, he’s a lot faster and has longer range with his tentacle attacks.
Also: The new Green Goblin boss mission is a pain in the ass when you’re chasing him down. Spend a lot of time early on practicing your swinging at high speeds and direction changes, or you’ll be re-trying a lot. He’s fast as hell.

The newer versions of the characters will piss old-school purists off to no end.
For example, Rhino isn’t a huge mutant or whatever in a suit, he’s a nerd piloting a three-story tall Mech. Much bigger than old-school Rhino and a dumber concept. You will spend the entire battle with him running away from his attacks and waiting for a chance to jump on his back and bash through the armor.
The Shocker makes a brief appearance, but he’s nowhere near as formidable as the ones in the older games–just web-shoot his blasters a couple times and he’s down for the rest of the story.
Goblin is a bitch to fight. He has a sort of shield over his body made of fire and you have to wait until he tires himself out for the shield to drop and get a chance to hit him–and even then you can only get a few hits in before the shield goes back up. He’s definitely not the old school version. No glider, no special bombs and shit. He jumps to get where he’s going and throws fireballs as his main attack. Pathetic in comparison, really.
Carnage on the other hand is the only awesome villain you have to fight (aside from the story they give as to how he comes about)–and you do it while playing as Venom. The game’s shining moment, I assure you.
I’m still playing it to see what I can unlock, but that’s about it.
