One of the most stressful game series’ I have ever played is Soul Calibur 2 and 3.
right now i’m trying to pull one off in kof 2k6. easy mission 5 challenge 6 i think. i have like 30 or so seconds to kill billy kane, but i can only hurt him when he’s lying on the floor. he keeps getting up real fast and my fingers aren’t dexterous or strong enough to pull off a super special fast enough that can actually hurt him while on the ground.
i came close one time but ran out of time. >.<
i both love and hate things like that. lol
also. trying to beat street fighter alpha over and over increasing the difficulty every time. and holy fuck is that stressful cause you keep fighting the same guy over and over again hoping you’ll get lucky this round and win and finally be over with it. like sagat can be a real pain the ass if you raise the difficult high enough. damn ai doesn’t just predict your next move, it KNOWS your next move and will counter within nano seconds. while it takes me miliseconds just to enter the counter-counter move if i even have one. >.<
i hate having to go up against sagat for the 30th time. that’s just stressfull. and you know that if you quit you have to re-fight everyone all over again on the same difficulty. the funny thing is theres prolly nothing to unlock by passing the game like this to be honest. i just don’t like to quit. lol
Group X ftw.
I barely stopped myself from snapping the stylus in half.
I barely stopped myself from snapping the stylus in half.
After recently telling a Canadian friend of mine I got a DS, he both recommended, and warned me about, this game. He mentioned never having sweated as much over a video game as this one.
As for me… A recent example would be for those damned jumps in the first "Turok" for the N64. Platforming jumps for a FPS? I can already feel the twitches coming on…
Games such as F.E.A.R. keep me tense and fearing what’s around the next corner.. THAT is stressful.
Gears of War fast paced Hiding, ducking, rolling and running away from giant beasts.. THAT is stressful (But the game isn’t necessarily difficult)
Puzzle games.. some of those can be stressful because you’re required to THINK alot more than just some button mashing game…
Even a game like City of Heroes can be stressful.. ensuring you do the right things, getting the right timing, ensuring that no one dies or ensuring that you take out the right enemies first.
I honestly have to say F.E.A.R. was the single most stressful game for me. It was the only game I could not play for long because it had my nerves up in a bunch. After about 30 minutes I seriously needed a "break" from playing just to relax my muscles. THAT is stress.
sound just got to me in such fuckedup ways i’d still be edgy an hour after i played it
bet they fucked around allot with the frequenties on that
as for difficulty, if i cant beat it i’l blame it on bad programming so i never get all that stressed out
Mind you.. difficult games make me ANGRY… that’s a short term thing. Stress is a long term thing that actually negatively affects the body. (muscles, joints, the mind, emotions, whatever)
Anyway, my pick is GTA3:San Andreas. Why?
Firstly some missions were too pinpoint-precise (The big-truck one. You can’t turn too much or you’ll shoot your loa- er…).
Then, sometimes it wasn’t even your fault. The other cars in races will actively conspire against you in a suicidal attempt to make you lose. They’ll double team you while someone else gets first. That’s just low.
Especially when these missions are necessary to the big objective of whatever scene you’re in, well, it gets a bit frustrating. But that’s really all I can think of. Some forethought and self-control goes a long way in a lot of videogames (ie. NOT screwing yourself over in the MegaTen series.).
Crash Bandicoot 1 or Super Mario Bros. are way harder then the recent ones. I think the producers relized fans don’t like games that take 20 trys to beat each level.
The newest experience was actually X-Wing Alliance – I popped it in after years of not playing it (never completed it – couldn’t complete that damn Death Star innards mission from Return of the Jedi) – and right at the first mission involving battle against Imperial forces I get stumped – tried it for probably 20 times before giving up, each try taking 15 minutes. Now, I’d suspected this before but this finally proved it: modern games are way easier than older ones, and some make it even worse by having quicksaves and whatnot. And playing modern games makes you a worse player it seems – I’m no more the X-Wing ace I used to be. ;_____;
The most nerve-wracking games suspense-wise that I’ve played have probably been X-Com/UFO (about the only turn-based game that was scary), Aliens vs Predator 1, 2, Resident Evil 2. Oh, and Silent Hill 1 though I only played that for like 10 minutes of the beginning. But damn those were a scary 10 minutes.
Seconded.
Especially the Marine missions. One of the best parts of the game was just how quickly you could die, and it really kept you on your toes all throughout.
Monster Hunter: Freedom on the PSP.
I cannot put it into words.
Yeah, ’cause massive Deus ex Machinas are SOO stressful.
I don’t know how the hell you’re meant to get past that stupid frog. I guess I just don’t have the flow ๐
I was about to say this.
So I quoted it.

I have to agree with you about F.E.A.R.: I will never be able to stomach the sight of a little girl in a red dress with long black hair ever again. Now, Gears of War on Insane difficulty- also really stressful. (You should be able to order the squad or Dom around with more impunity- the commands were basically useless in that game.)
Call of Duty games also are really stressful, because of the sheer monstrosity of the battles that take place in game. Need I even mention Rainbow Six (The original)? Now THAT game was HARD. Pretty much one bullet, regardless of caliber, would do you in. Getting ready to storm a room with hostages is a really stressful and calculating experience.
I’ll tack on "F-Zero GX" and "Burnout 3: Takedown" to this list because both are pure white-knuckle thrill rides to play, epically the former with the Big Blue Ordeal course. My fingers hurt after finally getting a first place on that one. I’m surprised I didn’t break the Wavebird.
However, the only game that’s ever really gotten me to blow up (in front of my friends, no less) was Perfect Dark for the N64. A friend and I were trying to beat one particular challenge (can’t remember for the life of me now which one it was), but we kept dying. After one time where we came thisclose to beating it, I threw my controller down and had to shut it off before I totally lost it and destroyed the cartridge. I still get a tiny bit tweaked when I think about it.
*thinking*
*thinking*

… Damn it all to hell that challenge was unfair.
Battletoads For The Nes (That game was Obstacle Courses one after another XD)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles For The Nes (Played it when I was a kiddo, never made it pass that Dam Stage (Pardon The Pun Mind You)
Robotech: Battlecry for the PS2 (Some of those missions are IMPOSSIBLE D: )
Any Of The Early Castlevania Games For The Nes (You take Too Much Damage In The Later Stage, Darn Medusa Heads D:)
For Most Nerve Wracking Game: I gotta Say Any Silent Hill Games, Any Fatal Frame Games or Dead Rising O.o?! That’s A lot of Zombies XD Go My Heated Frying Pan :p
I’ll stop now XD
hence why its a game, its meant to be a challenge.
This is coming from my frustration at the digging escort minigames in Okami right now..
Okay, I’m going to PM you.
