Sonic or Mario

who did you grow up playing/watching

for me it was Sonic

I only grew up likeing sonic for one simple reson..’knuckles’
He is my favourate character from any sega game I used to love the way he glided..

You ask a difficult question but yeah I’d still say Sonic. He was the Shizzy hizzle.:p

I use to watch all those Super Mario Bros shows. Those were the greatest. There was a Zelda cartoon that use to come on also, and I use to watch it also.

Yeah, I like Sonic, but Mario gets my vote. Super Mario RPG is one of the greatest games ever.

I grew up with both of them, but I only had Mario under control (untill now xD)
Sonic was the l33t fast hedgehog and his cartoon was so much better then Mario :E
But still Mario is Mario… and gets my vote.

I voted for Mario, I used to watch the Mario Bros Show and played almost every game. It sure is the best.

I used to like Sonic a lot. I even used to use him and Knuckles as characters in my stories when I couldn’t be bothered to invent my own characters when I was younger (including a convoluted Terminator based story that had both Arnie’s Terminator and the other bloke’s terminator trying to kill me, and it was down to Sonic and Knuckles to stop them from doing so.) Though Sonic was the "cool" hedgehog, I always preferred Knuckles’ dark, standoffish personality.

In terms of gaming, Mario was my hero. I used to love playing Super Mario Bros 3. I used to love watching a game show called Super Mario Challenge (the first series, where some guy whom the host referred to as the "ice man" because he hardly smiled when he won, won the thing.) I even whooped for joy when the greatness that Super Mario All-Stars came out for the SNES. My favourite game with better graphics, plus three others to boot?

Sadly, I then became more interested in the Playstation and became addicted to a certain RPG series, and as such I missed out on Super Mario 64, and Sonic Adventure. But three of the four games I ever owned on the Mega Drive were Sonic games, and I played through each Mario platform game on the SNES / NES (including Yoshi’s Island, and Donkey Kong.) No other platformer has touched these two, for me, since then.

So who do I prefer, after all that preamble and waffle? I don’t know, to be honest. Both are as equal as you can ever be. Character wise more for Sonic, gaming wise more for Mario. I think in the end, it boils down to the emotional tie I formed with Sonic and Knuckles in my writing, even if my character view on them differed from what the creators thought. Might seem like a weird reason to side with Sonic, but he provided me with the means to further my writing to where I stand now.

Sonic SO kicks Mario’s plumber arse. he was just so much cooler than Mario, had cool friends to help him and cool bosses to beat. also, he didnt turn into some kind of beaver when he picked up a leaf…i mean, that was just odd.

plus, when Sonic turns into Super Sonic and goes all gold and stuff, that just looks proper cool.

and the games were so much better. the levels just looked better, we designed better, and were more fun to play than those in Mario

and that is my opinion on the whole thing

I grew up playing Mario when I was a youngin (4 years old) and I used to dig the cartoons. I love everygame that came out since then(Super Mario RPG anyone?)…even the crappy mario is missing/time machine

Don’t get me wrong, I like sonic too but Mario game’s are much better imo.

I would have to say sonic. Don’t get me wrong, Mario is a great princess saving plumer, but Sonic is just way funner for some reason.

As for Mario? Sorry, Italian plumbers don’t appeal to me much (footballers yes!), going around shouting "Mamma Mia" ain’t much fun. Plus it seemed kinda weird.

Both series were really good. I liked this series called "Sonic Underground" that was so worth my Saturday mornings. But they don’t air them anymore. ;-;

i used to have a Sonic Jacket, and when i was young me and 2 friends used to play Sonic in the play ground (the Fat friend was Egg man lol)
But btw the Mario film was cool i liked that, dont know if any of you have seen it, i forgot its name

I grew up with both as well, but I voted for Mario. I’m surprised that not many people voted for him. Sonic was okay, but I thought he had too big of an ego (imagine me seeing this at my age! O_o), so I never liked him much. I liked Mario because he was a little Italian plumber man, and I thought his little plumpness was cute. And he was always happy, loved food, and can jump higher than a little plump man should ever be able to do. Top that, Sonic. XD

I would’ve voted for Sonic, but it was really Tails that I liked in that videogame. He was so cute and he was a fox! I like foxes. But a fast hedgehog with a major ego just wasn’t for me.

gotta say sonic cos i grew up watching the t.v thing and i used to love playing it on my very first console (master system 2)a really cheesy console…but it did the job alright…the only thing i liked about the machine was that the console came with sonic INSIDE it so i didn’t have to bother putting in a cartorage every time…IT WAS GREAT!:D 😀 😀

I grew up with them both… sorta I spose but I hated them both with a passion. I never played Mario due to the simple fact the games never really interested me, the closest I got to Mario was Mario Cart on SNES, which I will admit was awesome but I never went Mario or Luigi.
As for Sonic I could never stand those games either never touched them, I have played one or two but for say… 5 minutes each, not my cup of tea.

Because, unlike that post you just shared with us, his had something on-tpoic to say that contributed to the conversation and is really quite interesting. I never liked the whole plumber thing, and a blue hedgehog was always weird to me. I mean I grew up with these guys, but dashing heroes like Link appealed to me alot more.

I think Mephastophilis said it best, Sonic is basically better than the midget plumber in everyway.

sonic. i grew up loving this blue invention so that’s why i have blue hair! mario is a cool guy but i just go with sonic all the way. in my opinion luigi is better (dont ask why, i dont know myself) but sonik also has cool songs.

Mario all the way! Mario RPG was an awesome game. One of the best games i’ve ever played. The shows were cool too. I was mario addict back in the day. (11 or 12 years ago.)

this question is impossible for me to vote on. though i like the mario games better, i like the sonic characters better. and nintendo was launched with mario, but sega lived off sonic. i watched the mario (and zelda etc) shows when i was little (along with the tmnt baby!), but i got older and they got cancelled and then there was sonic to fall back on (the one with sally, mind you. not the one with scratch and grounder, the piece of sh!t). i was older, so of course remember sonic more and liked the show more. gosh…ill end this in just saying "geeze. what an impossible question for me to answer."

Sonic no doubt about it…….I hadnt even played Mario until about 5 years ago….where as with Sonic I grew up with him:P Sonic 1,2,3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic 3d 😀 ahhhh the memories

I’ll be honest in that I didn’t specifically grow up on either Mario or Sonic when I was little, it was more-so DOS computer games and the PS1.

Though both reasonably good gaming icons, my vote goes to Mario on the basis that he’s been in more good games and that Super Mario Galaxy is one of my top games.
