At this time, I plan on having 64 entries and battling them two at a time. All matchups will be selected at random and will last approximately 2 days. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined from the overall percentage of votes they have obtained in all previous rounds. To prevent a tie in the first round, I will withhold my own vote and use it to break any ties that arise.
For those who don’t know the rules, I’ll be posting a new match-up every so often. Vote for one of the current entries only. You may vote only once per battle.
Special rules:
1. All shows that are part of a franchise (i.e. the various Gundam shows) will be grouped together as one entry.
2. TV shows that have not yet completed their release will not be accepted since no final judgement can be passed on them.
3. Rounds will last 48-72 hours, depending on when I’m around to update.
That’s about all I can think of right now.

I’d take this out since the anime is so short and pretty inconsequential regarding Alita’s story. Unless comics are a consideration, replace it with something more complete(unless there are many more episodes than I’m aware of) =\
And I’d change Ghibli’s collected to works to one of the more popular ghibli flicks out here…Grave of the fireflies, Mononoke or Spirited Away. It doesn’t make sense to group movies together just by studio.
EDIT: After considering it a bit, I suppose I can work that out by replacing Alita with Grave of the Fireflies and simply list Spirited Away on its own. I hate to leave out a couple of others, but they’re not as popular anyway.
The inaugural matchup will be:
Cowboy Bebop – A very episodic series following the often offbeat adventures of a group of interstellar bounty hunters including Spike Spiegel (a martial arts expert with a dark past), Jet Black (Spike’s partner and owner of the Bebop), Faye (Spike and Jet’s chief competitor and erstwhile companion), and Ed (a young girl with a prodigious talent for computer hacking). Includes one movie.
VS
Full Metal Panic – Sosuke Sagara, an elite soldier working for a mercenary group called MITHRIL, goes undercover to protect Kaname Chidori–a girl whose mind may hold the key to a dangerous technology–from danger; a task which proves far more simple than adjusting to life in high school. Also includes two spinoffs: FMP? Fumoffu (a comedic series focusing on Sosuke and Kaname’s school life) and FMP! The Second Raid, which is still airing in Japan.
Also, I’m mildly perturbed that the Zone of the Enders anime movies aren’t included here. They’re full-length feature movies, totally stand alone as far as I recall, so there’s no worry over questions of an entire series being compared.
The first Idolo movie ranks a close second in my opinion to Evangelion as far as space opera/mecha anime goes.
Full Metal Panic – 0
Ouch. A complete blowout opens the rumble, although that’s not unexpected considering Bebop’s greater exposure.
Dirty Pair – Cheesy 80’s fun at its best. Kei and Yuri are probably the most destructive pair of agents ever to grace a tv screen, having left entire planets in ruins during the simplest of cases. One full-length tv series, several OAVs, and three carnage-packed movies included.
VS
Fullmetal Alchemist – A very hot property at the moment which tells the tale of Edward and Alphonse Elric, two young alchemists who failed a transmutation which cost Ed an arm and a leg, but destroyed Al’s entire body, leaving his soul trapped in a suit of armor. Together, they seek the Philosopher’s Stone, an alchemical amplifier powerful enough to restore their bodies to normal. Also includes a movie that has not yet been released overseas.
This one isn’t really fair either, I’m afraid. That’s just the luck of the draw though. Maybe there’s a couple fans of the classics that can keep this from being totally one-sided.
never saw dirty pair. (though i was aware of it!) so i’m going with full metal.
and on a side note. i don’t think i’d be missing anything from dirty pair either. i’d say by its looks, its a combo of lupin and irresponsible captain tylor. very fun, funny, and explosive, but no need to worry too much and desperately go out to see what i’ve missed. but i will make the effort in the future though so i can vote more fairly in future battles!
final vote. full metal
just so you know…(vote for Dirty Pair)
just so you know…(vote for Dirty Pair)
…
dirty pair?
IT’S NOT A DRAGONBALL VERSION OF COWBOY BEBOP AT ALL CHANGE YOUR VOTE
dirty pair?
So post a pic of those two being appropriately sad, then.
It’s not like Dragon Ball though. They’ll destroy an entire planet, but it won’t be because they got in a fight with some huge demon and had to use magic energy blasts of energy. They’ll have to go to a planet to save a kidnapped child or something, and they might accidentally trigger a self-destruct sequence in the base he was being held in and then when they escape the base will self-destruct and level an entire city. Or maybe during their escape they’ll be attacked with missiles, and they’ll use buildings to block them.
but… they’ll have saved the kid!
WHAT AN AWESOME SHOW.
CHANGE YOUR VOTE
does it count if i’ve seen lots and lots of trailers of it? i hope so. :p
I have to in order to resist your attempts to devour my soul!
NO.
Anyways, you’ve probably only seen stupid Dirty Pair Flash trailers that are stupid.
Anyways, you’ve probably only seen stupid Dirty Pair Flash trailers that are stupid.
ha! wrong again! because i don’t even remember! they came out in some anime i rented years ago. ha! before dvd’s were invented! aka, BEFORE YOU WERE BORN!
:p
high fives chorns
high fives chorns
2 years older. my gosh. its like a totally diffrent generation. i simply cannot relate to this person!
yah it was on vhs. other than that. :p
high fives ryan!
Fullmetal Alchemist – 11
No shock here. Dirty Pair is a great show, but it doesn’t matter much when most of the voters are limited to what they see on tv, thus have no exposure to classic anime. However, I do ask that people at least look into shows they aren’t familiar with a bit before voting. A valiant effort, rezo!
Ah! Megami-sama – Keiichi Morisato’s life takes a turn for the extraordinary when a wrong number connects him to a "Goddess Help Line" and he winds up with a beautiful goddess named Belldandy for a girlfriend. That’s all well and good until her two sisters move in with them. Aside from the original OAV series, there’s also a movie, a comedic spinoff, and a completely new full-length series that recently finished airing.
VS
Super Dimensional Fortress Macross – Originally chronicling the war between humanity and an alien race called the Zentraedi, the Macross franchise has since branched off into several other equally gripping tales. With its classic military/mecha action and powerful well-told stories, the series has long been a benchmark for sci-fi anime.
Macross is fantastic, and it’s one of my favorites, but it just isn’t as special to me as Ah! Megami Sama is.
A valiant effort, rezo!
My only regret is that I did not try hard enough…and get ndi to delete the posts of people that voted for Fullmetal Alchemist…
MACROSS 4EVER!!!
….uh, Macross, whatever. It was my first real anime! It doesn’t really stand the test of time, though =/
Super Dimensional Fortress Macross – 6
A slightly lower turnout this time. I hope it’s not going to be like this every time there’s not a show you can see on cartoon network in the running. If it is, I may have to resort to using milkman’s system of giving extra weight to the more regular voters.
Berserk – How this show was actually aired on tv is beyond me. Berserk is a horrifically brutal show centered around a medieval warrior named Guts and his life with a mercenary company called the Band of the Hawk. When the body parts aren’t flying, there’s a surprisingly deep story to be found and a plethora of very interesting characters.
VS
Fushigi Yugi – Love triangles abound, and friendships are put to the test after two ordinary girls are magically transported to ancient China. One of the girls is transported back to the modern world almost immediately, while the other is left to search for her friend and a way home. The anime, which came from the shojou manga of the same name, ran for 52 episodes, and spawned several short OVAs. (Courtesy of Ndi, since I haven’t seen it.)
but in case you need a tie breaker. (most likely not) i’ll vote for fushigi yugi cause i heard great things. compared to berserk, of which i heard nothing.
<B>Fushigi Yugi was one of my first animes, so I’ll vote for that.
….uh, Macross, whatever. It was my first real anime! It doesn’t really stand the test of time, though =/
Yeah macross was one of the best series made
Fushigi Yugi
Fushigi Yugi – 6
Another low turnout and a very unexpected result. To be honest, I had expected Berserk to walk away with this one. Rezo and Tact, you two in particular should both check that one out.
FLCL – A very short–and even more demented–OVA series about…a guy who has mecha sprouting out of his head? Or is it about the mysterious crazy alien girl who uses a bass guitar as a weapon? I can hardly tell. =/
VS
Rurouni Kenshin – Based extremely loosely on Japanese history, Rurouni Kenshin is a very long series that follows the exploits of assassin-turned-wanderer Kenshin Himura. In atonement for his bloody past, Kenshin has vowed to never kill again and spends his days defending those he cares for. Also includes a movie and 6 OVA episodes.
Also. Prak. I so called that last one. ๐
Rurouni Kenshin couldnt keep my attention after a few episodes.
Not only that but FLCL’s weirdness kept hold of me, and was generally awesome.
Rurouni Kenshin – 4
Quite a solid victory for FLCL. I’m glad to see the number of votes going back up. Now let’s try to keep it there.
Golgo 13 – Ranking among the greatest badasses in anime history, Golgo 13 is a nigh-invincible assassin who will kill anybody, no matter who or how well-protected they are, if the price is right. Picture James Bond without any trace of a conscience. Covers two movies adapted from an extremely long-running manga.
VS
GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) – Eikichi Onizuka, age 22, is an expert martial artist, is legendary among nearly every biker gang in Japan, has the manners of an irate elephant, has never had a girlfriend, and…dreams of being the greatest high school teacher in the country (mostly for the young girls). Naturally, he meets his match when he winds up teaching an out-of-control junior high class.
A quick reminder: Please bold your votes.
now for this vote.
golgo 13
Really, nothing against jiro though.
GTO – 1
And another of my own favorites is ruthlessly annihilated. At least it got one vote, even if it was from someone who mistook Golgo 13 for Gargoyles. No rezo, I won’t strike that vote! GTO is too awesome to be completely shut out.
Love Hina – Keitaro Urashima puts himself in the awkward position of being the manager of an all-girl dormitory in order to study for Tokyo University’s entrance exams, which he’s already failed several times. But how is he supposed to study between all the strange occurrences and the constant beating from the tenants? To further complicate matters, one of the girls might just be the closest thing to girlfriend he ever had and the very reason he’s trying to get into Tokyo U. One full-length tv series and a 3 part OVA.
VS
Last Exile – Claus and Lavie are a pair of Vanship pilots in a strange retro-futuristic world. Throughout the course of this well-crafted and beautifully animated story, they become involved in a war that will change the face of their world. Overall, it makes for a very fine balance between action, political intrigue, and character development.
Unless the man doing the shutting out is Golgo 13.
Also: Last Exile.
Nicely said, Last Exile for me too.
anyway. last exile for sure.
love hina i find naru’s bangs annoying. also kaora su ^^
last exile
Last Exile – 9
Pretty close match, but Love Hina joins the ranks of popular anime shot down in round one. Also, Mr. WrongPants wisely evades the wrath of rezo with his thoughtful, albeit useless, post-mortem vote for Dirty Pair.
Outlaw Star – Gene Starwind and company travel the galaxy in a super-advanced (not to mention stolen) ship in search of the legendary Galactic Leyline, taking on assassins, pirates, sorcerers, aliens, and other dangers along the way. It also spawned a spinoff series called Angel Links.
VS
Initial D – Prodigious young street racer/tofu delivery boy Takumi Fujiwara takes on all challengers in a high-octane emotionally charged series about youth, love, and outrunning the newest and fastest cars on the mountain pass in a beat-up old Toyota. Includes three seasons of the tv show and a movie.
I place this vote with a twinge of regret, though. I’ve only seen a few episodes of Outlaw Star on CN, but excellent reviews and a nicely priced box set pretty much sold me on the series.
Anyone remember that time some n00b said the movie The Transporter reminded them of Outlaw Star, cos chick in the trunk and shit?
Initial D – 3
This round ran a little long because my connection at home was down yesterday, but it shouldn’t happen again.
Bubblegum Crisis – One of the defining entries in the cyberpunk genre, BGC was one of the earlier anime series to be available in North America. It centers around a group of young women known as the Knight Sabers, a team of armored vigilantes who battle against out of control Boomers (androids) and the ruthless Genom Corporation that manufactures them. The 90’s saw an updated version of the series produced that greatly expanded the story of the original. It’s spawned several spinoffs, but they’re nowhere near as notable as Bubblegum Crisis and Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040.
VS
Irresponsible Captain Tylor – Justy Tylor was a nobody (and content to be so) until dumb luck led him to rescue a general’s granddaughters, but as a "reward" for that deed he is promoted to captain of the Soyokaze. Unfortunately, the ship is little more than a dumping ground for the worst personnel in the fleet and the easygoing Captain Tylor is perhaps the biggest misfit of them all. Covers a full-length tv series and a 10 OAV episodes.
I expect rezo will have more wrath prepared for those who vote for Tylor over BGC, but how much sway does he really have over the process?
Bubblegum Crisis.
Looks like the mere suggesting of my wrath caused most people to vote for BGC! But I’m not as behind that series as Dirty Pair.
Still will vote for it though!
NOW YOU SHALL FACE MY WRATH!
vote for tylor damn joo all!!!
TYLOR 4EVER
now i realize how much it sucked for rezo voting for the other simply because other people haven’t seen the one you like….i feel….your pain… *cries*
so now that you ordered it. you have to tell yourself. "i got this simply because i have money to burn, and expect nothing special out of it. if i’m lucky, i’ll be entertained for 2 minutes"
repeat that untill you believe it. and THEN watch it. i hope it all goes well. ^^
(also have we put d(from vampire hunter d)in here)
I know I’m late updating this time, but you’ll have to excuse me considering that my internets have been wiped from existence by that little hurricane thing that came through here. I’ll try to do it tomorrow afternoon since I don’t have much time now and the pc I’m on sucks.
Irresponsible Captain Tylor – 3
Another abnormally long round ends with a dominating victory for BGC, although this has certainly made me interested in seeing Tylor.
Vampire Hunter D – Together with his traveling companion, a powerful parasite infesting his hand, D the half-vampire travels the lands of the distant future fighting against his vampire brethren as well as his own dark nature. While the original movie was one of the earliest animes available in North America and did a great deal to propagate fandom of the genre, the second (and most recent) movie reached a much higher level of artistry.
VS
Ghost in the Shell – In the not-so-distant future, law enforcement has become heavily reliant on cyborgs. One such cyborg, Motoko Kusanagi, seeks a mysterious "brain hacker" only to find something more amazing and dangerous than she imagined. Also includes a sequel movie and a full-length prequel tv series.
…
Vampire Hunter D, I guess.
I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan of Vampire Hunter D either, but I find it more entertaining then GITS, and that is what is important.
I thought the character designs in D were pretty neat, rezo.
i love em both. i can’t decide. so i won’t vote on this one. or better yet. let me vote twice. one for each of them. lol
after thinking a bit more on it. i decided to go for animation. and i think the animation in bloodlust was spectacular. trully inspiring. eye canday all the way. so i’ll vote for vhd
ps. both count right? or did you specifically mean the old vhd? that one was funny. remember the shower scene? rofl. ah. how i love fanservice of old.
Ghost in the Shell – 13
Massive turnout this time around, but that’s no surprise with two high-profile titles.
Yu Yu Hakusho – Death and resurrection leaves 14 year old delinquent Yusuke Urameshi with an interesting talent: the ability to see spirits. This long tv show follows his adventures as a detective in the employ of the the spirit world’s ruler, Koenma, and focuses mainly on over the top fighting. Also includes a movie.
VS
Dragonball – Love it or hate it, I’m sure you know all about it. The Dragonball franchise lasted for over a decade in various incarnations and spanned three tv shows, as well as over a dozen movies.
This time we have two fairly similar franchises, but while Dragonball has much more history behind it, it also has more vehement critics. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
Yu Yu Hakusho
I’ve never enjoyed Yu Yu Hakusho, and a good chunk of the DB universe drives me crazy.
However, I think there were a lot of episodes of the original Dragonball that were hilarious, and I didn’t think DBZ was *that* weak until pretty far on. So I guess I’ll go with that.
Dragonball.
Dragonball – 11
A really decisive victory for Dragonball. I actually thought it would go out in the first round, but it got a pretty lucky draw.
Patlabor – Another very persistent franchise, the Patlabor series has existed since 1989 and has seen new material as recently as 2003. In a world where giant robots called "labors" are used for everything from construction to warfare, a motley crew of of police officers utilize advanced patrol units called Patlabors to maintain law and order. Covers 1 TV series, 2 OAV series’, and 3 movies.
VS
Slayers – Speaking of persistent… The pint-sized, flat-chested, mega-powerful teenage sorceress Lina Inverse travels the medieval landscape with her oddball gang righting a few wrongs, eating everything in sight, and committing lots more wrongs that mostly involve widespread destruction. Covers a three season tv series, 6 OAV episodes, and five movies.
SLAYERS FOREVER!
i baught the soundtrack at the adv website during their super summer sale. cost me 2 bucks. and its fantastic. saw the whole first 2 series. (got up to the point where theres this girl that transforms into a dragon and then i lost my cable connection)
basically. i vote for slayers.
even though my name came from slayers I never really got into it though I don’t think it’s bad. I just thought the idea of calling Rezo’s copy "Copyrezo" was funny.
I used to have a crush on Zelgadis, and Misao and I would fight over him in chat. XD
Dragonball.
I gotta agree with rezo here, I did enjoy the first story arc in Yu… but damnit, I MISSED THE DRAGONBALL VOTE!Uhhhh… anyway, Patlabor.
You misspelled the name, you silly boy.
Slayers – 7
Slayers made a nice run of it at the end, but it just wasn’t enough. Patlabor moves on while Lina and company are sent back to fantasyland.
Appleseed – In a post-apocalyptic world, humans live alongside Bioroids (androids) in a Utopian civilization until a terrorist plot orchestrated by a disgruntled police officer threatens to undo their very way of life. The original OAV is still very highly regarded, although the recent movie has met with a more lukewarm reception from fans. Two sequels (one movie and a tv series) are planned for next year.
VS
Chobits – Hideki Motosuwa would give anything to have his own "Persocon," an advanced mobile computer modeled after a human form. Sadly, a mere prep school student could never afford one… but finding one is another matter. His new Persocon, Chii, is adorably cute, but can’t do much of anything. Unlike other Persocons, however, Chii can learn on her own.
Who highly regards the original OAV? I saw it almost a decade ago so maybe it was awesome and I didn’t realize it, but when I was talking friends into reading the comics back then, one of them had seen the movieOAV and I had to repeatedly stress to him that the comic was really different and actually good =\
I guess I just don’t care much for the over-used plotline of "genetically superior/engineered humans and normal humans learning to get along with each other in spite of extremist factions" in anime.
Chobits – 6
I didn’t expect this. So Chobits bites the dust right away… Good showing though.
Space Pirate Captain Harlock – One of the most recognizable names in anime, the notorious pirate Harlock travels the sea of stars in his near-invincible battleship Arcadia, fighting tirelessly for nothing more than his own honor and freedom, as well as the memory of his best friend. If my count is correct, this covers three series and one movie, although many of the characters have appeared in several other shows.
VS
Fist of the North Star – In a post-apocalyptic future where the weak are enslaved by the strong and the world is ruled by mutated giants, a lone martial artist named Kenshiro–successor to the deadly Hokuto school–travels in search of his lost love. Includes two long-running series, a recent OAV series, and a movie that retells the original story.
Even the merest mention of Captain Harlock (sometimes spelled Herlock) is enough to put something on top of my viewing list. FotNS is well-known, but how will it fare against something as legendary as Harlock? Then again, a lot of people seem to judge an anime simply by the amount of gore and the beefiness of its male characters, both of which Fist has the advantage in.
Also: it would be pretty hilarious if I edited people’s votes to Harlock.
But I won’t!
and fotns was neat and funny but not worthy of voting.
Prak knows I am voting for Harlock. ^^
Also: it would be pretty hilarious if I edited people’s votes to Harlock.
But I won’t!
But you will!
np prak
Fist of the North Star – 7
Pretty awesome comeback there, but I’d expect no less from the greatest (IMO) anime antihero ever.
Tenchi Muyo – One of the most well-known harem shows out there, the franchise mostly centers around a guy named Tenchi who has a plethora of alien women fawning over him and occasionally has to help save the galaxy. Lots of continuity here (and lots of lack thereof) as the franchise consists of 4 tv series, at least half a dozen OAV series, and 3 movies.
VS
Record of Lodoss War – If there’s a quintessential fantasy series, it’s hard to imagine it being anything other than this. RoLW follows a band of heroes who seem to be ripped straight out of a hardcore AD&D game on their quest to save the Isle of Lodoss from destruction. Although the original OAV is more well-known, the tv series, Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, upholds the same standards of quality and follows the source material much more closely.
Record of Lodoss War – 5
Very small turnout this time. I was kind of wanting to know how Ndi and rezo would vote. Shame on you guys for disappointing me.
Nadesico – Being a fry cook sounds like a pretty easy job, right? Being a cook on a state-of-the-art space battleship is a little more complicated, especially when you’re being forced to double as a mecha pilot in a war against a civilization that modeled itself after your favorite cartoon. While it is a very quirky show, Nadesico’s silliness is offset nicely by a surprisingly intriguing plot. Also covers a much more seriously-toned movie.
VS
Evangelion – As one of the most well-known anime ever, I suspect a description for this show isn’t really needed. A rather mediocre and silly first half gives way to a very deeply philosophical, depressing, and often brutally violent second half that truly makes this show legendary. Also covers two movies: Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion.
Just so you know and don’t think i’m being lazy, I didn’t list complete titles for either of these because the english and japanese titles are different.
IMOIMOIMOIMO
Evangelion – 6
Oh well. I was really pulling for Nadesico.
Ayashi no Ceres – I honestly don’t know much about this one. From what I can tell, it’s something about a vengeful spirit being reborn in a girl named Aya, who has to keep it under control to keep it from destroying her family. If I’m wrong or left out a tremendously important detail, please point it out.
VS
El Hazard – This one I know pretty well. Makoto Mizuhara, a teacher named Fujisawa, his rival Jinnai, and Jinnai’s sister Nanami are transported by a mysterious device to an alternate world called El Hazard. While Makoto, Fujisawa, and Nanami try to exist peacefully in their new world, Jinnai claims leadership over their enemies, a kingdom of giant bugs, and uncovers a weapon that could spell doom for the entire world. Covers two OAV series and two TV series.
I’ve seen exactly one episode of Ayashi No Ceres.
They’re both in my rental queue, though!
I seriously don’t know which way to vote this time. =/
Me neither, I have them both on DVD, but I don’t really know which way to vote.
IT WOULD CHANGE RUMBLES AS WE KNOW THEM FOREVER.
Since Odin can’t post it for himself right now.
ALSO, Neat idea Ndi! Can’t do it if any votes are cast though. Too bad.
As a brad groupie, I am now obligated to vote for El Hazard.
El Hazard – 8
Quite a few abstentions this time around.
Spriggan – For the most part, Spriggan is a standard action flick. It’s loud and pretty, but doesn’t have much substance beyond that. Then again, it probably has everything action junkies care about. In short, a secret organization called ARCAM has found Noah’s Ark and must defend it against evil cyborgs working for a rogue branch of the U.S. military.
VS
R.O.D. – A lot of people are instantly turned off by the title–Read or Die–but they wind up missing out on a very engaging show that manages a near-perfect balance of character-driven storytelling and over-the-top action. The original OAV series centers around Yomiko Readman, a shy bookworm who uses her power to manipulate paper as an agent for the British Library. The TV series that followed (called "R.O.D the TV" or "Read or Dream") centered around three "sisters" with similar abilities and expanded the ongoing story to truly epic proportions.
so my vote goes for ROD.
ALL ABOARD THE BANDWAGON.
Read or Die. The first half of the TV series was so good.
The first half.
first.
R.O.D. – 12
Revolutionary Girl Utena – Utena is a girl whose dream is to become a prince. To that end, she goes to a strange school in search of the "prince" who once helped her, meets a lot of very strange people, competes in a series of strange sword duels, and gets herself engaged to a strange girl called the Rose Bride. Very odd show. The movie (an alternate retelling) is even weirder. Good stuff though!
VS
Inu Yasha – A reincarnated priestess is sent back in time to feudal Japan, where she meets a demon her former self imprisoned and sets off on a journey with him to find all the shards of a sacred jewel. Of course, they’re mostly held by evil creatures who are made stronger by the gem, which makes for a very monster-of-the-week type of formula. Absurdly long and repetitive, but it has an ungodly legion of rabid fans. Includes several movies.
Pretty hilarious that Inuyasha is going down like this!
however. inu-yasha did manage to keep me coming back for more for at least over a dozen episodes. any anime that makes me want to see more, is a good anime imo. so i’ll go for inu-yasha.
I know what you mean. I had to watch it five times to figure it out!
And I’m still not sure I’m totally right about it.
And I’m still not sure I’m totally right about it.
The Utena movie doesn’t really seperate from reality and from what’s going on in the minds and dreams of the characters.
Animerica Extra had an interview with the creator about it, and it really helped it come together for me.
Inu Yasha – 2
I figured Inu Yasha would get beaten this time around, but I never dreamed it would be that big a loss.
Grave of the Fireflies – One of Studio Ghibli’s most highly rated works, GotF recounts the trials of a pair of orphans as they struggle to survive after losing their mother in the wake of an American bombing during the final days of WWII.
VS
Saiyuki – In a very loosely adapted version of the Journey to the West legend, a rogue priest named Genjo Sanzo leads a small group of demons (Son Goku, Sha Gojyo, and Cho Hakkai) against other demons intent on releasing an ultimate evil. Covers three tv series’, one movie, and an OAV.
BUT NOT SAIYUKI EXCELLENT.
just kidding grave of the fireflies
just kidding grave of the fireflies
are you the rezo guy from slayers?
sure
Saiyuki – 1
No shock there. Saiyuki has its fans, but it doesn’t seem too popular around here.
Vampire Princess Miyu – This is something of a rarity since quality occult shows seem to be in short supply. In short, Miyu is a vampire who appears to be 13 years old. Tasked with hunting the Shinma (demons) who plague the earth, she brings hope and happiness to humans, but remains isolated and tormented by the knowledge of what she is. Covers a short OAV series and a full-length tv series.
VS
Akira – Even the most casual of anime fans has probably seen Akira, although opinions on it vary pretty wildly. In the wake of World War III, Neo-Tokyo is practically ruled by gangs who battle constantly against the corrupt and ineffective government. Amidst the chaos, a motorcycle gang gets caught up in an incident involving a kid with psychic abilities, leading to one of them being experimented on and gaining powerful psychic abilities of his own, which he subsequently uses to take revenge on all of society.
I’ve seen Akira oodles of times, and I will probably watch it oodles more times, so I guess it gets my vote just for that.
Also: when I was a lot younger, I saw some of Akira on the Sci-Fi channel, and it disturbed me to the point of tears.
Eh… Akira ๐
Akira all the way.
Madman dub.
because unanimous wins suck.
because unanimous wins suck.
if there was ever one that deserved it as much as Akira
Akira – 17
No shock there, but I really feel like people are underrating Miyu a bit.
Excel Saga – In the touching story of a hyperactive lunatic in love with a megalomaniacal would-be world conquerer operating out of a sewer, Excel Excel will brave any danger and make any tasteless joke. Along with her partner, Hyatt, who has a bad habit of dying every few minutes, she battles against the plots of a secret government organization and evil (but terribly cute) creatures from outer space, as well as the escape attempts of her dog/emergency food supply. Nothing is safe from parody in this off-the-wall show.
VS
Gatchaman – To combat the evils of the terrorist organization Galactor, a prominent scientist assembles the Science Ninja Team and equips them with hi-tech weaponry and bird-themed costumes. Also known as Battle of the Planets and G-Force, Gatchaman was one of the earliest shows of its type and defined many of the elements that have now become cliche in this type of show.
Plus, I just think Excel Saga is really overrated.
P.S. This is a vote for Gatchaman.
Don’t be so sure of that. The classics have been doing pretty well.
japanese voice actress who does Excell should win an oscar r sumthin
I liked the noses!
Gatchaman – 8
Really close one there, but even the Great Will of the Macrocosm isn’t gonna bring Excel back this time.
His and Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) – Yukino Miyazawa and Soichiro Arima are both model students with secrets. Miyazawa is a really an odd duck who only pretends to be perfect because she likes the attention, while Arima does it for the sake of his parents and to repress his own darker nature. When the two fall in love, they decide to remove their masks and be themselves. Sort of.
VS
Escaflowne – A high school student named Hitomi is transported to a magical world called Gaea, where she becomes involved in a prince’s quest to defeat an evil empire in hopes of finding a way home, aided by a group of comrades and a powerful mech called Escaflowne. Also covers an ultra-condensed movie version of the story.
Kare Kano is fun tho, sad Gainax didnt got to finish it
Saw them a long time ago and am not really big on either… now.
I wasn’t happy with the way either of them ended, though.
Cos the other one sounds like utter shit, but that’s probably because Prak didn’t describe it very well!
Escaflowne – 8
So the rumble sees its first tie. My opinion finally counts for something! I’ve only ever seen the Escaflowne movie and utterly detested it, although I’ve wanted to see the series for a while now. However, I have seen Kare Kano in its entirety and it ranks pretty high on my list of favorites. Thus, Kare Kano takes my vote and the win.
X – Kamui Shiro has the power to determine the outcome of a war between the Dragons of Earth and the Dragons of Heaven, as well as the fate of all humanity. Unfortunately, his friend Fuuma is fated to become his opposite and support the other side, meaning that they must eventually fight one another with the destiny of mankind in the balance. Covers the original movie, as well as a tv remake.
VS
Spirited Away – One of Studio Ghibli’s most well-known works. When an unsuspecting family stumbles into what they believe to be an abandoned theme park but is in reality a resort for spirits, the parents make the mistake of eating the food intended for the resort’s patrons and are turned into pigs as punishment. This leaves their young daughter, Chihiro, all alone with nothing more than her wits and a few new friends to rely on as she tries to break the curse.
BUT MY VOTE DOES NOT COUNT THE X MOVIE. JUST FOR THE RECORD. I AM NOT VOTING FOR THAT.
Totally going to start recruiting in chat for x!
WAPOW
WAPOW
You’re making a bad decision.
So I started getting my little sister some Clamp book a few years ago!
… she told me to stop!
And that’s you on Merl’s account, isn’t it Mandi!
THANKS A LOT EX-SOLDIER.
I am different from the other ndi!
And while I’m obviously late in saying this, the Escaflowne movie FUCKING BLOWS. The series on the other hand is excellent.
Fix’d!
๐
AiKaze don’t spam you @%%!@ ๐
X – 7
Very tight battle early on, but a string of votes sealed Spirited Away’s victory. Also, this one was a bitch to count. Thanks a lot, people.
Cardcaptor Sakura – After accidentally releasing dozens of magical cards upon the world, each of them a sentient creature, Sakura Kinomoto is given magical powers by the guardian of the Clow Cards and tasked with rounding them all up to prevent a catastrophe. Also includes two movie sequels.
VS
Orphen – A prodigious student of a prestigious school of magic sets off on a journey in search of an infamous dragon called Bloody August. Strangely enough, he isn’t trying to destroy the beast, but save it. Covers two seasons.
I guess I’ll vote for it!
Anyways. Clamp fangirl part 2 the sequel. Cardcaptor Sakura.
Also: thx guys. ^^
Orphen – 2
Gundam – One of the most recognizable names in anime, the Gundam franchise practically defines the "realistic" mecha genre. Over its nearly-30-year history, it has covered several distinct timelines in a vast number of series/movies. Although the franchise’s quality has wavered occasionally, it always comes back for another round. I’m not even going to try listing the various entries for this one.
VS
Pokemon – Speaking of recognizable… If you don’t know what a pikachu is, you’ve been living in a cave for the past decade. The premise is simple. Kids run around capturing strange (and often adorable) animals, training them for battle, and pitting them against other creatures for defense or in competition. Tons of episodes, but I’m not familiar with it beyond the first arc.
Two very familiar names this time, but Pokemon will have its work cut out for it (even with its overwhelming cuteness!) to take down a legend like Gundam.
Gundam comes with many great intros!
Of course I’m picking it, but I thought Pokemon’s first story arc was ok(from the start to when Ash gets to the Pokemon League tournament and loses in the …semi-finals)
Of course I’m picking it, but I thought Pokemon’s first story arc was ok(from the start to when Ash gets to the Pokemon League tournament and loses in the …semi-finals)
Who’s Ash?
Edit: oh that’s right..completely forgot about the name..err…well then what would u say if i changed my vote..change it cause my avatar’s a gundam?? how bout i just keep my vote eh..it’s mine..all mine..
change it
change it
Edit: oh that’s right..completely forgot about the name..err…well then what would u say if i changed my vote..change it cause my avatar’s a gundam?? how bout i just keep my vote eh..it’s mine..all mine..
Plus, as a "giant robot" fan, it’d be blasphemous of me to vote against a source of so many beautiful designs.
Oh, the main character, Ash is the American name, that clears things up
How dare you vote for that utter shit that is Pokemon!
Gundam.
Lvoe, say pokemon plz
Pokemon.
No it isn’t. Just hit the edit button.
Pokemon – 14
Holy shit! What a competitive round. In the end, Pokemon goes down by a narrow margin, but the old voting record goes down by a rather large one.
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku – When Ryonosuke’s cat dies, his scientist father brings it back to life by implanting its brain into an experimental android modeled after a teenage girl. Now instead of merely being a pet, Nuku Nuku serves as a bodyguard for the family, defending them against the plots of Ryonosuke’s mother, who wants to take him back from his father and capture the android for her weapons company. Covers two OVA series’ and one tv series.
VS
Noir – The lives of two young women are joined by a pocket watch and a familiar haunting melody. Both Kirika and Mirielle are top-notch assassins, but Kirika has no memory of her past and the origin of her skills. The two begin calling themselves Noir and set about the bloody task of uncovering the mysteries of their past, as well as their connection to one another, hampered by the machinations of an ancient secret society that wants them both dead.
More charm!
Noir – 4
Sailor Moon – Usagi Tsukino and friends battle the forces of evil as the Sailor Soldiers. I’d consider this to be the quintessential magical girl series, but let’s do outselves a favor and forget the english version ever happened. Covers five seasons of the tv series and 3 movies.
VS
Lupin III – Master thief Arsene Lupin III pulls off some of the most daring robberies in history, aided by his friends and hounded by the tireless Inspector Zenigata. There’s more continuity here than I can count, covering quite a few movies, tons of OAVs, several tv series’, and other appearances.

Very seldom has Lupin III failed to interest and entertain me. Also, since so many creators that have touched the property over the years it now has a bit of the "something for everyone" syndrome, even for Miyazaki flunkies with the first television series and the amazing film Castle of Cagliostro. Lupin surely gets my vote.
Plus live action sailor moon is pretty much the greatest thing ever!
Lupin III’s theme song is really really good so I think it wins in this battle.
I agree
that beng said.. fucking Lupin the III all the way.
I might have voted for Noir, except I never saw any of All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku on account of I tend to not watch anime with title’s like All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku.
If Sailor Moon wins I am going to find and kill everyone that voted for it.
*clears throught-comesoutofdemonicpossesion/obssession-clears throught*
sailor moon forever. she’s my favorite. yay! i hope you all vote for her. pretty please with sugar on top. or else you’ll make me very sad(angry). ^_@
edit. i love lupin too. not dissing it. your all wannabe lupin fans too! i’m the bigger fan. i made sigs out of lupin! posers! but i have to vote for my life long fav.
:p
if i wasn’t as obsessed with sm as i am, this would have been a tough vote for me and i prolly wouldn’t vote at all. since i love lupin as well. but like i said, i can’t forsake my life long love. :p
BISHOUJO SENSHI SAILOR MOON
Ridiculous reasoning fyi
i totally havent voted.
Lupin III – 17
Owned.
Dual – Part Tenchi Muyo and part El Hazard, with a dash of Evangelion thrown in for good measure, Dual is a quirky show about a guy named Kazuki who has been seeing strange visions of an alternate reality where giant robots do battle in the streets. A mad scientist’s obnoxious daughter accidentally sends him to the alternate world he’s been seeing, where he is quickly recruited as a pilot. In his off hours, he attends school and lives with his commander (the alternate universe’s version of the aforementioned mad scientist), the obnoxious girl from his own world, and an alien girl named D.
VS
Trigun – Life isn’t exactly easy for Vash the Stampede, what with having a $$60,000,000,000 price on his head and being considered the most dangerous man alive, known far and wide for leaving entire cities in ruins. In reality, he’s a perfectly nice guy who binges on donuts, cries a lot, and generally acts like a fool. Underneath the carefree exterior, however, is a gunman of unrivaled skill whose aim is so precise that although he’s never lost in a gunfight, he’s never killed anyone either.
I’ve only seen the first couple episodes of Dual, but it didn’t seem like anything special.
and Fyi Lupin voters ๐
Trigun – 13
Not at all unexpected. Dual picks up one sympathy vote, but is otherwise crushed. To be honest, I’m not even sure why it survived the initial cut… Guess I just wasn’t paying attention.
Ranma 1/2 – 15 year old martial artist Ranma Saotome returns from a trip to China with a strange curse that turns him into a girl every time he’s splashed with cold water and only hot water can turn him back. Upon his return to Japan, he receives the added complications of his engagement to Akane Tendo, which was arranged by their parents, and his regular battles against an outrageous cast of misfits. Covers seven seasons of the tv series, an OVA series, and two (or is it three?) movies.
VS
Magic Knight Rayearth – Three teenage girls are magically spirited away from Tokyo Tower and deposited in a world called Cephiro, where they are quickly informed that they must save the world from destruction in order to be returned home. Guided by Mokona, a cute creature that seems to be able to providethe girls with anything they need, they travel the lands of Cephiro to acquire the powers they need to become Magic Knights. The second segment (season?) of the show deals with the aftermath of that adventure. Also covers a three-part OVA remake.
Look Ndi! A Clamp show!
Probably won’t be as naughty as i’d like, though.
Magic Knight Rayearth.
I really love that song from Rayearth though. The uh… "Yuzurenai Negai"… yeah.
ranma gets my vote.
You are spared because I like your head!
I could make reference to the various meanings of "head" but I won’t.
I won’t.
I could make reference to the various meanings of "head" but I won’t.
I won’t.
OH I THINK WE ALL KNOW WHAT SHE REALLY MEANT.
iykwim
Magic Knight Rayearth – 7
Clamp doesn’t seem to be doing well. First Chobits goes down and now this. At least Cardcaptor Sakura made it through the first round.
Hellsing – The Hellsing organization has long battled against the undead in Great Britain, keeping their crusade hidden from the eyes of the populace. However, even with the assistance of the vampires Alucard and Seras Victoria, the war now threatens to spill out into the streets as artificially created "Freak" vampires begin appearing. Combined with the threat of a semi-psychotic paladin from the Vatican, it’s not a great time to be a Protestant knight. With a new series slated for release this December, Hellsing looks poised to become a hot property again.
VS
Goldenboy – Perverted genius Kintaro Oe takes to the road on his trusty bicycle to learn all he can about the world. Over the course of his travels/studies, he screws up in every way imaginable, but always proves his competence by the end of each episode. It was based on a hentai manga, but the show is somewhat cleaner, albeit still very perverted.
(for those of you keeping count, that’s the same as me not voting at all. :D)
but if anyone needs a tie breaker. make it hellsing. goldenboy is 6 eps only. hellsing 13. so i’ll go for hellsing.
Cos Eternal Damnation music video (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_videoinfo.php?v=15045)
and i thought you were starting to be cool. shows what i know.
but that’s impossible. i can prove it with this tatoo i got on my forehead. ๐
(note: the tatoo is made up and tact is just intimidated by ashin’s fandom and feels threatened because tact is self proclaimed mega fan)
tough choice tho
Hey now, Hellsing is pretty damn awesome as well, I just like Goldenboy more.
Goldenboy – 3
To be honest, I’m a bit surprised that Goldenboy got any votes at all. I thought I was the only person on earth who would vote for it over Hellsing.
Wings of Honneamise – The tale of an alien race’s first steps into space. The Royal Space Force is an underfunded agency that’s viewed as nothing more than a joke by the rest of the nation. However, the government they serve has found another use for them: bait to start a war with another country. Now they must race against time to complete their launch in order to prevent the conflict.
VS
Serial Experiments Lain – Sorry, but no description this time. To be perfectly honest, I don’t know enough about Lain to write anything about it, nor can I find any decent descriptions of the series. I’d appreciate it if someone could take the time to write a few lines about it for me to post here.
This is the last match of the first round. I know Lain is probably more well-known, but Wings of Honneamise ranks among the best movies I’ve ever seen. I certainly hope it does well!
Here’s a good synopsis for Lain imo:
np prak ^^
THUS I VOTE FOR IT.
Here’s an even better synopsis for Lain imo: its SHIT
anyway. i ain’t voting for something i havne’t seen so i go for lain.
I mean… without the label, that could be pancake syrup or anything.
Serial Experiments Lain – 1
Round one ends with a near blowout. Too bad Tact has never seen Wings. On to Round 2!
A couple of changes at this point: First, now that brackets have been established, the battles will no longer be random. Second, I’ll be voting now that my own vote will no longer be needed for tiebreakers.
Also includes one movie.
This is bound to be interesting. I’m not particularly fond of either show, but I suppose I’ll go with Fullmetal Alchemist just because I cared enough about it to watch the whole thing.
(included in some: Fullmetal Alchemist maybe)
Fullmetal alchemist (tho I liked) doesnt even compare.
EDIT: Delete this post please any mod.
"final vote full metel"by tact
i loved fma so far. and was left at a cliffhanger back when the episodes ended and before they got new ones again. but i only liked cowbe here and there and its the ending that makes me wanna vote for it. even though i also love ed and fei should be naked all the time. :p
but i really like the fma plot from start to finish. i’m hooked to it. i feel like getting involved if i could interact with the characters. i’d be like, hey! i’ll help you guys! :p
so i’ll go for fma.
Fullmetal Alchemist – 8
Your vote doesn’t bother me in the slightest, Ktulu. In fact, it wouldn’t bother me even if you didn’t have that awesome ava/sig that complements mine so well. ๐ I just don’t like either show enough to care which goes on.
In this case, I care a bit more. I’m voting for Macross out of a combination of respect for its merits and disdain for the other show taking down Berserk.
Thanks for the words Prak. I adore you MORE THAN EVER.
Macross
I hate shoujo :/
But it’s such a goofy series. "OH NO WHAT IS THIS KISSING! PLEASE DON’T DEFEAT US WITH SONG! WE ARE TALL."
I’ll vote for Fushigi Yugi as protest against your praise.
SUPER DIMENSIONAL FORTRESS MACROSS
MOTHER FUCKERS.
I will vote the same as whoever posts after me votes!
If you’ve already voted, you can just post again to sway my vote.
Fushigi Yugi – 4
I’m calling this one a bit early early to get back on pace. It doesn’t look like Fushigi Yugi has a chance anyway.
FLCL – A very short–and even more demented–OVA series about…a guy who has mecha sprouting out of his head? Or is it about the mysterious crazy alien girl who uses a bass guitar as a weapon? I can hardly tell. =/
VS
Golgo 13 – Ranking among the greatest badasses in anime history, Golgo 13 is a nigh-invincible assassin who will kill anybody, no matter who or how well-protected they are, if the price is right. Picture James Bond without any trace of a conscience. Covers two movies adapted from an extremely long-running manga.
FLCL Golgo 13 for me, thanks.
hell even a blind man can enjoy it
no questions asked
you all suck
With their music.
The irrelevance of this post hurts my soul.
HMPFFHH
where is the -rep button
doesnt this forum have a -rep button?!,?? :O:o:|
hmpfffff .. Flcl was a frikking revolutionary piece of anime, smiting this is smiting progression

But I have to let this slide
Master roshi is teh perv master o//

Cos FLCL is a bunch of shit piled together in one show in an attempt to fool people into thinking the creator is deep.
Cos FLCL is a bunch of shit piled together in one show in an attempt to fool people into thinking the creator is deep.
that is so missing the point xD
I love this show, but there’s practically nothing deep about it, nor is there anything to get.. and that never was the point
Its just a rollercoaster of madness, with intense visuals and gorgeous animation… I hate when people try to put a point to anything, and when they cant find any they call it shit >_>
Golgo 13 – 9
Between a string of votes for Golgo and my own change of heart, what looked at first like a runaway victory for FLCL has turned into a tie. Let’s see the results of the tiebreaker.
Previous round:
FLCL – 66.67% of total vote.
Golgo 13 – 90% of total vote.
Golgo 13 pulls out a shocking come-from-behind victory!
VS
Outlaw Star – Gene Starwind and company travel the galaxy in a super-advanced (not to mention stolen) ship in search of the legendary Galactic Leyline, taking on assassins, pirates, sorcerers, aliens, and other dangers along the way. It also spawned a spinoff series called Angel Links.
Last Exile without a doubt. In fact, I might go as far as to say I would possibly consider doubting the sanity of anyone voting otherwise!
I’ll vote for Last Exile here.
Indeed. Prak, you no longer suck. AS FOR EVERYONE ELSE THOUGH…
last exile.
I meant the rest of the people as in people that voted for FLCL.
But now I mean "the people that voted for FLCL and kubirio"
just because FLCL looked pretty.
Outlaw Star – 4
Pretty decisive and utterly expected.
VS
Ghost in the Shell – In the not-so-distant future, law enforcement has become heavily reliant on cyborgs. One such cyborg, Motoko Kusanagi, seeks a mysterious "brain hacker" only to find something more amazing and dangerous than she imagined. Also includes a sequel movie and two full-length prequel tv series’.
While Ghost in the Shell was fairly neat for its time, it simply doesn’t have the enduring appeal for me that Bubblegum Crisis does. Come to think of it, GitS was pretty mediocre all the way around and doesn’t even begin to compare to BGC’s awesomeness!
GHOST IN THE SHELL MOTHERFUCKERS
So:
BUBBLE GUM CRISIS MOTHERFUCKERS
So:
BUBBLE GUM CRISIS MOTHERFUCKERS
So:
BUBBLE GUM CRISIS MOTHERFUCKERS
because i love any futuristic anime/manga/movie/book that makes me wish/hope/aspire(inspire)/work towards such futures.
bgc doesn’t inspire shit.
good luck living that long…
Anyways, Bubblegum Crisis.
hey thanks man. that means a lot to me. its something i take very seriously. i’m confident i’ll see cool stuff. i don’t expect it all, but i expect a lot. just look at what we have accomplished in the past 100 or so years. that’s a fucking LOT!!! imagine in just 50?? and shit. i’m only 22. add to that the fact that people live longer and longer every generation. i’m set man. ๐
my one true dream however is seeing the world of giant mecha. robotech is the anime that inspires that in me. makes me wanna get degrees in engineering and the like. i watch discovery science as much as i can for up to date stuff on the latest in technilogical advances and i like sci-fi books for more inspiration. the future is now! :p
Ghost in the Shell – 6
The cyberpunk crown goes to BGC.
Dragonball – Love it or hate it, I’m sure you know all about it. The Dragonball franchise lasted for over a decade in various incarnations and spanned three tv shows, as well as over a dozen movies.
VS
Patlabor – Another very persistent franchise, the Patlabor series has existed since 1989 and has seen new material as recently as 2003. In a world where giant robots called "labors" are used for everything from construction to warfare, a motley crew of of police officers utilize advanced patrol units called Patlabors to maintain law and order. Covers 1 TV series, 2 OAV series’, and 3 movies.
Patlabor for me.
wich should NOT be mistaken as Dragonball Z
most people havent even seen the original Dragonball
No it isn’t.
Yes it is.
and its db/z/gt for me. all are good.
no it isn’t.
Yes it is.
No way man, it totally isn’t.
Patlabor bores the crap out of me =/
No way man, it totally isn’t.
yes way man it totally is.
yes way man it totally is.
Then how do you explain all of the ones that came before it! You can’t. It is not possible
walks over to lil billy, an average american youth…from america who will be asked a series of questions as to his knowledge regarding anime shows that came before dbz.
"hey billy, do you know what thundercats are?"
"no"
"hey billy, have you ever heard of Gatchaman?"
"no"
"hey billy, have you ever seen, ronin warriors, silverhawks, robotech, gundam, (the list goes on)"
"did you say gundam? oh hell yah, i love gundam seed, it rulze!! i see it all the times on the tellies!"
i bet it didnt!

You are the worst person at proving points ever.
Just because a random little kid on the streets never watched Battle of the Planets doesn’t mean that Dragonball Z is an earlier example of shounen anime being sucessful in america.
That’s like you saying the Matrix was the first successful action movie, because little kids are more likely to have heard of it then older successful action movies.
U MEAN TEH WOOD CHIPERR SCENE IN TEH TREE OF MIGHT? OMG ITZ AWESOKEMR!
it is here in the states and every other non japanese/asian country.
Nah
let me emphasize my points yet again.
1. ANIME
2. SUCCESFUL
3. AMERICA
any questions?
maybe i should make things a little harder instead. lets not only take away little billy, but also…
lets take away all these newbie wannabe anime fans, mostly everyone on this forum, who was introduced to anime from dbz, then learned about better stuff and consider themselves elite for being able to find cooler better stuff than dbz. they now consider dbz to be the suck, and then, in order to not be labled stupid noobs like little billy who only know of newer anime, they make an effort to remember older shows they didn’t care two shits about when they were kids, but now have some magical newfound appreciation for these older works and talk about them like 30 year olds remenicing on the good old times.
fucking fags. admit it. your all between 15 and 21 and don’t remember jack shit. only later did you realize "oh crap, voltron/gijoe/transformers is anime…COOL, i am so cool for liking anime before i knew it was anime".
fucking fgt’s. get a life.
go and d/l bleach and naruto or whatever the fuck you do.
It’s clearly not the "originator of the shounen genre." I’m really not sure why you bother to argue about it. You’re wrong, and anyone who bothers to research it for ten seconds will come to the same conclusion.
Your little tantrum doesn’t change the fact that you’re wrong about a pretty obvious subject.
i was under the impression somebody meant something along the lines of "its what started action/guy anime in the USA"
which i’d like to say is true and i agree with it. heck. anime in general imo.
do i have to keep stressing that?
well it is an opinion afterall. :p no need to fight me about it. i also have opinions about hamburgers and how they are technically sandwitches. anybody wanna fight me about that?
however. i’d emphasize ANIME. and KNOWING, it was an anime. (and i’m not talking about technical definition of anime)
sure gijoe prolly hit it off, who knows what was first, too lazy to find out, but did we know it was anime? shit. i was prolly 9 everything was a cartoon when i was young. didn’t even know voltron was anime. but i loved it.
anyway, now that i think aobut it, i think i’d rather say,
TOONAMI, was the originator of anime, in the USA.
now that’s something with some balls on! i’d like to see a discussion on that one. ๐
i seriously doubt we’d all be where we are now, if it wasn’t for toonami. lets all give thanks. :p

i seriously doubt we’d all be where we are now, if it wasn’t for toonami. lets all give thanks. :p
There were anime fans in the US in the 80s. They bought japanese videos and "fansubs" were printouts of the dialogue that they read along with the show or before/after watching. Hell, they were here before the 80s.
Not everyone started with Toonami, hell, dragonball Z didn’t even start on Toonami. It came on super early on Saturdays before going to cartoon network(Battle of the Planets reruns were shown before it) or didn’t know what an anime was until you did. Sci-fi channel had its own weekly anime movie showing in the early 90s and that was mostly the fruits of building on the success anime had already gained in the US before that. You’re just being stupid. Quit it.
also: Grow up.
well it is an opinion afterall.
Its an incorrect statement of fact.

Yep! There was even the Mazinger Z dub/edit"Tranzor Z" in the 80s, and even shows like "Robotech" that Tact mentioned before but suddenly forgot were popular with lots of people, whether or not they knew about the multiple shows that made it up, or that the proper term for it was anime. To say Toonami is the start of anime in America is just ignorant.
fucking fags. admit it. your all between 15 and 21 and don’t remember jack shit. only later did you realize "oh crap, voltron/gijoe/transformers is anime…COOL, i am so cool for liking anime before i knew it was anime"
The original Transformers show aired in the 80s is absolutely not anime, it was written and recorded in English first. G.I. Joe is also an American property. Especially G.I. Joe! If that had been made in Japan it probably would have been a crazy sentai style show, with the whole team comprised of multi-colored variations of Snake Eyes, and Cobra Commander cast as a giant robot from another dimension!
Basically, it’s not nice to get angry with people that disagree with you, especially when you’re throwing around facts that aren’t so factual.
anyway. the only things you guys have managed to prove is that there are fans of anime before dbz. but that doesn’t really mean anything because even the stupidest crap has cult followings but is never considered HUGELY popular. just some small number of fanboys or what not. i thought we were talking about HUGELY popular. oh wait no. something about originators. maybe if i reword what i’m trying to get across. meh. whats the point. it doesn’t bother me either way. i’m surprised you guys took it so seriously. maybe i should make a thread labeled. "what anime got you into anime and you knew it was anime". i’d like to see the replies on that. ๐
it was robotech, sailor moon and dbz for me. and i’m speaking for MYSELF. i’ve no need to speak for the HIDDEN market that existed before the 80’s of anime fans no one has ever heard of. i speak only for myself.
btw rezo. um…your confusing me. you talk as if what i say is just nonsense and yet you take it more seriously than anyone else here. otherwise you’d say "…shut up noob" or something and then not post. then call me names, and well. its funny. keep it up. you make me laugh. ๐ just remember your trying to correct someone who really doesn’t care at all. if anything i’m just fucking with you. that would be too easy. so i’ll pretend to be serious when neccesary.
"no your wrong!"
ok im done.
as for ktulu. well i hope you exuse me for getting angry. i just go annoyed at everyone for vehemently denying what it was they first started on, and then trying to prove me wrong by giving examples of OTHER poeple. everyone should just speak for themselves and not people we don’t know. pfft. :p
"blah blah, der wuz anime fanz before der 80’s lar! duh! joo R so dumb! haha noob!"
rofl. that’s all i heard to be honest. everything else was filtered out. rofl.
…

Oh man, you’re going to look back at this one day and laugh at yourself so much. That is, after doing a little growing up.
I don’t think anyone is out to make you look stupid, we just all see things differently and are trying to share that.
first of all.
ktulu. thanks. i appreciate that last sentense. very nice of you. it makes me wanna stop annoying you guys. please don’t feel bad or nothing. plus, me am sorry. i don’t mind being put back in my place. hey if you feel like trying it, feel free. i know myself and i know i get like that sometimes. :p i’m the EXACT same way in real life. most people just get tired and say "shut up". i’m the type of person who gets loud when happy but other people get annoyed..and so on.
and yes, i very much understand what your trying to say.
rezo, everything you say makes me laugh. thanks. ๐ i just don’t know how many years you’d estimate i’d have to grow up to laugh at it. i’m 22 right now. would i have to wait till 30? or 40?
Maybe. I will tell you in 8 or 18 years.
Dragonball – 5
Rezo, did you notice that you never voted this time?
Appleseed – In a post-apocalyptic world, humans live alongside Bioroids (androids) in a Utopian civilization until a terrorist plot orchestrated by a disgruntled police officer threatens to undo their very way of life. The original OAV is still very highly regarded, although the recent movie has met with a more lukewarm reception from fans. Two sequels (one movie and a tv series) are planned for next year.
VS
Space Pirate Captain Harlock – One of the most recognizable names in anime, the notorious pirate Harlock travels the sea of stars in his near-invincible battleship Arcadia, fighting tirelessly for nothing more than his own honor and freedom, as well as the memory of his best friend. If my count is correct, this covers three series and one movie, although many of the characters have appeared in several other shows.
I think I’ll take a page out of ashin’s book this time.
CAPTAIN HARLOCK MOTHERFUCKERS
haha, I was planning too, but never made a decision and then sorta forgot.
I’ll vote this time. lol@appleseed.
I vote Harlock all the way
reading comprehension!
.
Also: My cousin saw one of my Harlock comics and said "El Capitan!" because he had been watching it on some local spanish channel.
Good times.
just wauw
I really don’t get why people loved the new appleseed movie so much. =/
I really don’t get why people loved the new appleseed movie so much. =/
Pretty graphics.
I’d bet the same people loved the Gundam Wing movie when it came out.
I’d bet the same people loved the Gundam Wing movie when it came out.
hey. i’m voting for the old one! i haven’t even seen the new one.
*pouts*
and wutz wrong with gundam wing movie
*/pouts*
:p
Appleseed – 1
I hope the count is accurate, but it’s pretty decisive even if I counted wrong.
VS
Evangelion – As one of the most well-known anime ever, I suspect a description for this show isn’t really needed. A rather mediocre and silly first half gives way to a very deeply philosophical, depressing, and often brutally violent second half that truly makes this show legendary, whether it’s in a good way or bad. Also covers two movies: Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion.
I have a feeling counting this time is going to be a pain… Anyway, my vote goes to Record of Lodoss War.
JUST TO BE A DICK. i hate you prak.
eva!!!!!!
Never saw RoLW, premise just didn’t appeal to me at all.
Not at all.
With only two choices, it’s rather inevitable that someone is going to agree with him. Also, if you take notice, not everyone has agreed with him by any means!
I liked Neon Genesis Evangelion a little bit anyways.
So I guess I’ll vote for Neon Genesis Evangelion.
i mean every post before my own. it totally made me think that’s what was going on. but things are turning around now. ๐
Evangelion – 9
Oh crap, a tie. Now I have to figure percentages. ๐
Lodoss 5/8 = 62.5%
Evangelion 6/10 = 60%
Record of Lodoss War squeaks past by a mere 2.5%. I figured this was going to be a tight contest, but I never expected it to be that close.
El Hazard – Makoto Mizuhara, a teacher named Fujisawa, his rival Jinnai, and Jinnai’s sister Nanami are transported by a mysterious device to an alternate world called El Hazard. While Makoto, Fujisawa, and Nanami try to exist peacefully in their new world, Jinnai claims leadership over their enemies, a kingdom of giant bugs, and uncovers a weapon that could spell doom for the entire world. Covers two OAV series and two TV series, one of which was a remake of the original OAV series.
VS
Pretty clear choice for me this time. The first half of the R.O.D. tv series alone makes it worth voting for over almost anything.
But the OAV is good enough to get R.O.D. my vote.
R.O.D.
i always thought read or dream was a spinoff after everything that happend in the tv series centered around the 3 sisters. the tv series seemed more around yomiko’s best friend writer girl…the author and shiz.
i’ve seen read or dream only in manga form.
R.O.D. – 9
Woulda been a blowout if not for ashin being pissed at me for some weird reason. I think I’ll start withholding my vote for when I close the round. =/
VS
Grave of the Fireflies – One of Studio Ghibli’s most highly rated works, GotF recounts the trials of a pair of orphans as they struggle to survive after losing their mother in the wake of an American bombing during the final days of WWII.
Cos Utena fucking blows.
she isn’t called Utena she is called Ndi.
my vote. grave.
Grave of the Fireflies – 7
Revolutionary Girl Utena – 3
Akira – Even the most casual of anime fans has probably seen Akira, although opinions on it vary pretty wildly. In the wake of World War III, Neo-Tokyo is practically ruled by gangs who battle constantly against the corrupt and ineffective government. Amidst the chaos, a motorcycle gang gets caught up in an incident involving a kid with psychic abilities, leading to one of them being experimented on and gaining powerful psychic abilities of his own, which he subsequently uses to take revenge on all of society.
AKIRA IS FOR FRUITS.
Akira – 7
Gatchaman – 6
His and Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) – One of Gainax’s more bizarre works, Kare Kano is about a pair of model students who are idolized by everyone they encounter. Beneath the surface, Yukino is a spoiled and arrogant "queen of vanity" who thrives on the adoration of others, while Soichiro strives to be perfect for the sake of his family and to set himself apart from the parents who abandoned him. After meeting and falling in love, the two decide to be true to themselves, but find it isn’t so easy.
I almost voted for Gatchaman… before deciding not to vote at all. ah well
spirited away I guess.
I’ll vote Spirited Away. If it were up against something else, maybe not though.
Kare Kano – 2
Spirited Away – 12
Card Captor Sakura – After accidentally releasing dozens of magical cards upon the world, each of them a sentient creature, Sakura Kinomoto is given magical powers by the guardian of the Clow Cards and tasked with rounding them all up to prevent a catastrophe. Also includes two movie sequels.
VS
Gundam – One of the most recognizable names in anime, the Gundam franchise practically defines the "realistic" mecha genre. Over its nearly-30-year history, it has covered several distinct timelines in a vast number of series/movies. Although the franchise’s quality has wavered occasionally, it always comes back for another round. I’m not even going to try listing the various entries for this one.
I can see the battle lines being drawn already. Brother will be set against brother (or sister, more likely) and the Shrine will be rent asunder by the terrible conflict. Or not. I’ll vote Gundam, although it pains me to vote against the only remaining Clamp show in the rumble.
i see prak is voting again~
card captor sakura
COMPLETELY NON AVERAGE BY THE WAY
GOD DAMNIT!
I guess.
i’m going for gundam cause that show entertainmed me more than ccs ever could. yah. that’s right. i voted based on ENTERTAINMENT value, not secret love fantasies. you damn sickos. :p
even though i do fantasize of kikcing ass with my own gundam. oh yah. the sweetness. *jizzes*
… ?_?
<3
A mystic adventure
Card captors
A quest for all time

GOD DAMNIT!
you know you can step off my gimmick now, thanks.
So there.
Because of longstanding fetishes that surfaced on the channel.
>_>
Many milennia ago.
Many.
I know you’re out there ArchAngel!!
the added motherfuckers or anything else, that was someone else. i can prove it! let me go look at one of my very earlier posts.
ok. i was wrong. rezo was the very first one to use large fonts.
i was the second. with the added word "4EVER" at the end.
i wouldn’t know who started the motherfuckers one.
let me keep looking to see who started the large font + red text!!
still looking. but i saw myself using "large font + 4EVER" again. makes me all unique and shit. all cool….yah..i’m cool. lol
ok found it. pp (pinaple princess) used red text. but no "motherfucker". let me keep looking for the originator of that one.
still looking. logged myself using "4ever" for the fourth time. oh yah. now no one can use that and say i didn’t start it. haha! i always wanted to be the guy that started "something" catchy. i hope it catches. lol
wow. 6 times me using 4ever. i rule. lol still can’t find motherfuckers yet.
ok. wow. i’m on page 17, (using my setting of 30 post per page [or was it 40..]) post number 503 and still can’t find large font +mother fucker.
but i did find the first use of large font + the word "fucking". that was none other than ME!! WEE. i started it all. i rule! you all copied me. haha.
still looking for red text though. :-/
FOUND IT. the king/queen (don’t know lol) of LARGE RED FONT + MOTHERFUCKER is indeed, PP. yay. i’m tired now. not gonna go find + god dammit, ill take odin’s word for it. im sure we all do too. :p
anyway. to recap.
large font (in general) = rezo
large font + (a word/name) namely "4ever" = me (tact)
large RED font = PP
large RED font + motherfucker = PP
large font + god dammit = odin
i think i also get award for most useless post so far. ๐
Card Captor Sakura – 16
Gundam – 13
Looks like poor Gundam just couldn’t get a break. First a tough draw against Pokemon and now this. I just hope no votes got altered by an overzealous mod or admin!
VS
Lupin III – Master thief Arsene Lupin III pulls off some of the most daring robberies in history, aided by his friends and hounded by the tireless Inspector Zenigata. There’s more continuity here than I can count, covering quite a few movies, tons of OAVs, several tv series’, and other appearances.
for castle of cagliostro.
and nobody altered anyone’s votes. o_O
She wouldn’t. but someone else would
lupin.
for castle of cagliostro.
Lupin, ftw.
my vote=Nuku Nuku (just for clarification since my comment is supporting both shows..)
Nuku Nuku out of spite.
Lupin – 9
Nuku Nuku – 3
No shock, but I really don’t see what the fuss is about Lupin.
VS
Ranma 1/2 – 15 year old martial artist Ranma Saotome returns from a trip to China with a strange curse that turns him into a girl every time he’s splashed with cold water and only hot water can turn him back. Upon his return to Japan, he receives the added complications of his engagement to Akane Tendo, which was arranged by their parents, and his regular battles against an outrageous cast of misfits. Covers seven seasons of the tv series, an OVA series, and two (or is it three?) movies.
i might as well go for ranma since i love free titty shots. ๐
i dont like Ranma
http://www.squirrel.com/mooncat/pics/sci-fi-pics/ranma_moviecard1.gif
don’t make me get my "other" pics either. so vote right the first time!
Overexposed? How is that even relevant?
I prefer Trigun.
Trigun – 6
Ranma 1/2 – 8
Trigun had momentum toward the end, but not enough time to follow through.
VS
Wings of Honneamise – The tale of an alien race’s first steps into space. The Royal Space Force is an underfunded agency that’s viewed as nothing more than a joke by the rest of the nation. However, the government they serve has found another use for them: bait to start a war with another country. Now they must race against time to complete their launch in order to prevent the conflict.
This is the last match of Round 2. Round 3 may be a little late to begin since a certain person I contacted about something special I have planned never replied. Anyway, since I know ashin is voting opposite me anyway and I don’t have to worry about a spite vote, I’m going to put in the first vote for Wings of Honneamise.
Because it was probably the first real anime i ever saw, believe it or not. And even to this day i`m still in love with it. I had to check the name but yup, that`s it. ๐
Hellsing.
I prefer Trigun.
I meant in Korea, he’s extremely overexposed, and I want to read something that not everybody is reading personally. Anyways, Wings.
:p anyway…
HELLSING 4EVER!!!
Yeah, but I’ve found that most popular anime is actually only decent and not good to me. That and I didn’t really get why everybody likes it, it’s a boring series to me.
HELLSING, MOTHERFUCKERS!
i have never seen wing… :-S
but nothing beats FMA or NOIR ๐
i have never seen wing… :-S
but nothing beats FMA or NOIR ๐
oh jeez you gotta be kidding me on noir. -_-
wait wait. i keep forgetting. all i saw was the first dvd. i think it sucked majorly. but gotta remember, theres more dvd’s to the story…must try to…feel…..some sort of….non-hate.
IT SUX. :p
i vote hellsing again. count it as two.
Wings of Honneamise – 10
Pretty close match, but when all is said and done, Alucard is dead for good this time. This brings Round 2 to a close.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
For Round 3, a series of "wild card" entries (including descriptions) have been submitted by a cross-section of the regular voters and will be randomly inserted into the matches as a third option. Vote for only one of the three.
In the event of a tie between a third entry and one of the others, the "wild card" will lose by default. Other ties will be handled normally.
VS
Ashita no Joe (submitted by rezo) – One of the earliest sports anime, it is a classic series about a poor young drifter who reluctantly takes up boxing after being put in a youth prison for attempting to scam someone out of a large sum of money. From the early 70s, it does not follow the conventional style of contemporary sports anime but focuses on Joe’s struggles and isolation and is fairly tragic at times.
VS
Macross – Originally chronicling the war between humanity and an alien race called the Zentraedi, the Macross franchise has since branched off into several other equally gripping tales. With its classic military/mecha action and powerful well-told stories, the series has long been a benchmark for sci-fi anime.
Bebop
Ashita no Joe
Yeah! JOE!
hee hee i am clever
I’m trying to get the first 3 episodes now. They’re downloading verrrrrrrrrrry slowly, but if I can see them, and I like what I see I will totally vote for them.
If not, at least you got people interested in the show, which is the whole point of the wild card thing, really. ๐
i dont even need to see that show
Cowboy Bebop ftw!
What? That’s silly. the whole point isAshitanoJoewinning.
A translation of the manga was started : http://starbruin.com/ashitanojoe.html
doesn’t get too far into the series though.
but I am going to vote for Ashita no Joe to mix it up a little. ๐
I’d really hate it if all the "wild cards" end up losing too
Anyways! I read all the chapters of ashita no joe rezo linked to, and I liked it a lot. I’m disapointed it stopped where it did, though. It seemed like the story was really starting to pick up. At any rate, it was enough to earn my vote. ๐
haha, I’d only pretend to be dissapointed. Since you can’t check out Joe and already like Bebop much more than Macross anyways, you might as well just vote for Bebop.
๐
๐
Cowboy Bebop
Ashita no Joe – 7
Macross – 5
Amazing. I never expected Ashita no Joe to win… especially over a couple of powerhouse names like those.
VS
Urusei Yatsura (submitted by KtuluCJ77) – Urusei Yatsura, product of Ranma 1/2 and Inu Yasha creator Rumiko Takahashi, is the widely popular tale of unlucky schoolboy Ataru’s encounter with his accidental fiance, incidentally one of anime’s most recognizable "babes," the alien Lum. The property is represented in anime form in a 200+ episode television series, six movies, and ten OVAs.
I wonder how this one will go…
I can’t bring myself to vote on it. =/
CUZZ EVERYONE SUCKS UP TO REZO!
WHORES!!!
i bet hese even the onlyone who has actually seen the show
also: Duo.
Amazing. I never expected Ashita no Joe to win… especially over a couple of powerhouse names like those.
I thought it’d just be me and maybe chorns voting for it, actually. It is christmas miracle.
and I can’t decide on the current round yet either.
CUZZ EVERYONE SUCKS UP TO REZO!
WHORES!!!
i bet hese even the onlyone who has actually seen the show
rezo linked to some of the manga in this thread so that anyone who wanted to could read it. o_O
Also- I can’t figure out how to vote on this one either. These wildcards are making this tricky (and fun)! I’m going with either Last Exile or Urusei Yatsura, though. Sorry rezo!
It is christmas miracle.
Ktulu didn’t even edit to make his vote..even though it would only be one..sucky ass Joe can eat dirt, like Joe Dirt..man that sucked.
Last Exile for this..even though it has no big action sequences it was my favorite and has the levelest animation imo out of the other two(exaggerated Golgo; oldskool Urusei)..and better be seeing as I bought the series, even though I later sold it.
Is Wolf’s Rain anywhere in this thread?
Edit: no..can it be added to the wild card list if it isn’t already?
Urusei Yatsura, which I think I have seen some of. Also: Golgo 13 is the worst pile of crap I have ever seen. =/
No really, die.
Also: Golgo 13
Urusei Yatsura, which I think I have seen some of. Also: Golgo 13 is the worst pile of crap I have ever seen. =/
!
What about the scenes where he gives women the best sex ever without moving at all before possibly killing them? What about those scenes?
I’ve never checked, but I heard something like the comic is still coming out? that’d be pretty ridiculous.
Really though, I don’t know whether to go with Lum or Golgo 13. I loved Lum when I was younger and Beautiful Dreamer is really one of the best anime movies I’ve seen. Both series are on the "always vote for them" list that I never actually created in my head.
I guess golgo 13 since I just changed my mind.
No. The list is already assembled. But don’t give up hope. It might appear in future editions of this rumble!
No really, die.
Also: Golgo 13
macross ownz your life. whether you like it or not.
You aren’t dead yet. Either God doesn’t exist, or he’s pissed at me for not believing in him.
Glogo13 what the fuck is that it sounds so lame
no. he’s pissed for you not giving your soul over to Macross. do it now. or your going to hell. and last i heard, hell doesn’t have any anime at all. O_o
Glogo13 what the fuck is that it sounds so lame
Shenanigans. I declare it.
I thought you liked Last Exile!
I wonder who I am mixing you up with.
This time, however, it holds no interest to me.
Fuck you rezo ๐
=-O
Golgo 13 – 4
Last Exile – 5
Urusei Yatsura – 6
Yet another wild card progresses over two formerly-powerful contenders. Is this going to be a new trend or was it nothing but a fluke?
VS
Patlabor – Another very persistent franchise, the Patlabor series has existed since 1989 and has seen new material as recently as 2003. In a world where giant robots called "labors" are used for everything from construction to warfare, a motley crew of of police officers utilize advanced patrol units called Patlabors to maintain law and order. Covers 1 TV series, 2 OAV series’, and 3 movies.
VS
Zone of the Enders (submitted by Odin) – A short collection of anime based on the excellent mech/space opera video games by Konami. The overall storyline follows the development of the Orbital Frame as the series of powerhouse warbringers as a response to the historical backstory of the oppression of the Mars colonies (and later, other colonies further out in the Solar System) by the overly hateful and pompous Earthlings (a lot of similarities to the Gundam series in this regard). Consists of two OAV series centered around two different Orbital Frame models (Idolo and Dolores–many commentaries on internet reviews speculate on the very close resemblance of these two Orbital Frames with the Jehuty everyone is familiar with in the games), which I thought were still in production but a Google search reveals that further additions are up in the air due to a lack of sales. An excellent soundtrack and voice acting that is on par with the best anime of the same genre make this a must-have for fans of mecha anime.
Since the only one of those I remotely care about is Bubblegum Crisis, it gets my vote.
Golgo 13 – 4
Last Exile – 5
Urusei Yatsura – 6
At least it wasn’t last..can’t believe golgo got as many as it did.
Only have seen Bubblegum Crisis and parts of Patlabor but from the description Zone of the Ender sounds better than anything so I vote for that.
Yet another wild card progresses over two formerly-powerful contenders. Is this going to be a new trend or was it nothing but a fluke?
I’m pretty sure you can count on that trend ending this round.
Bubblegum Crisis
patlabor for me.
Only have seen Bubblegum Crisis and parts of Patlabor but from the description Zone of the Ender sounds better than anything so I vote for that.
hahahahahahahaha
OPINION
Plus, as rezo so joyously pointed out, you don’t even really know if it’s ‘good’ or not
Patlabor – 1
Zone of the Enders – 5
haha @ Arcanine
EDIT: Just in time, Yui, although it didn’t change the outcome in the slightest!
VS
La Blue Girl (submitted by Tact) – Miko Mido is the descendant of the most powerful clan of female ninjas. After her grandmother dies, she is left with the heavy task of keeping the clan’s status in check, while at the same time keeping the Shikima away from humans. The Shikima are horny demons who feed on the lust and desires of humans. Miko has to engage in sexual duels not only with the Shikima, but with the rival ninja clans as well. Sex battles where the one who "comes" first loses, and the last one to "come" wins. On top of all this, Miko is still struggling through high school… but why is Miko so closely bound to the Shikima?
I have a feeling this one is gonna be pretty brutal. Anyway, I’d vote for Harlock over anything, but it’s not even close this time simply because RoLW isn’t half as original (or interesting) a concept.
Captain Harlock for me.
INDECISIVE
hahahahahahahaha; haha @ Arcanine
Do you mock me and my love of mecha?
Harlock Saga, although again I’ve never seen this, but believe Prak when he says RoLW lacks originality. And I have seen La blue girl which is just another mindless hentai:
That Tact.
I’m sorry for laughing at you. Since Zone of Enders was the only series of the three that featured mecha, it’s clear that your vote -as a mecha lover! -for it was completely justified, as well as your recognition of it being the only good wild card even though you’ve never seen it ever.
At least I got to vote and my voice of opinion was heard! ^^
Also: Space Pirate Captain Harlock for me.
I vote for Captain Harlock
Ashin, you do know la blue girl is hentai right ๐
No, I’d have just enjoyed your opinions had you voted. And it was 50/50 between ZOE and Bubblegum Crisis for me last round, they’re just two different genres of equal quality imo, so I would’ve agreed with you, I just gambled on ZOE being better, because BGC does have mecha-like suits, they’re just not a hundred times the size.
Also, rezo: ZOE is pretty fucking good. I’d even say it was better than the Gundam series I’ve seen–including the much vaunted Seed.
And it was 50/50 between ZOE and Bubblegum Crisis for me last round, they’re just two different genres of equal quality imo, so I would’ve agreed with you
aye
i vote for la blue girl!!!
ps. don’t make me show you pictures!
I swear I’ll have you banned if you do. I’ll get a good laugh from the fact that you did it though!
La Blue Girl – 2
Record of Lodoss War – 4
Today’s lesson: Space pirates are cooler than horny tentacles and AD&D transcipts.
VS
Hikaru No Go (submitted by chorns) – A popular anime based on the game Go. Sixth grader Shindo Hikaru finds an old bloody go board in the attic of his house. Shindo’s mind fuses with Fujiwara no-Sai, a Go instructor at the Kings Palace and eventually gets into the game and trys to become an insei. He faces many rivals and even plays online for a time. A very dramatic but beautifully drawn anime.
VS
Grave of the Fireflies – One of Studio Ghibli’s most highly rated works, GotF recounts the trials of a pair of orphans as they struggle to survive after losing their mother in the wake of an American bombing during the final days of WWII.
Eyeshield 21
Due to it’s extreme sports nature of playing football. Though, in the past Sena has always been bullied and has been their "gofer". But through that he gained the new ability of the light speed dash. Which when you hear him dash. It sounds as if a gun is being shot. Due to his extreme fast speed
Also, he didn’t want to technically be in the football team. Which he tried for Team Manager. Which that idea was immediately scrapped as Hiruma forced him to play on the Deimon Devil Bats football team.
Whistle!
Sho tries to make a name for himself in the soccer industry by trying out for soccer. Unfortunately, his former school (Musashinomori) banned him from playing soccer. Due to his short height, which I think is kinda ridiculous excuse.

Ugh, sounds like you’ve been reading American Shonen Jump a little too much, branch out!
I gotta go with Hikaru No Go, I love go, and ended up loving this show.
We should play sometime. I’ve only played once, but I won that game and so I think it is clear that I am a master!

IT’S ON BOY
R.O.D. – 4
Hikaru no Go – 1
Grave of the Fireflies – 8
Akira – Even the most casual of anime fans has probably seen Akira, although opinions on it vary pretty wildly. In the wake of World War III, Neo-Tokyo is practically ruled by gangs who battle constantly against the corrupt and ineffective government. Amidst the chaos, a motorcycle gang gets caught up in an incident involving a kid with psychic abilities, leading to one of them being experimented on and gaining powerful psychic abilities of his own, which he subsequently uses to take revenge on all of society.
VS
Air (submitted by Ndi) – Air tells the tale of an traveler with unusual powers, and his friendship with a strange girl named Misuzu. A story spanning 1000 years unfolds across the backdrop of a quiet seaside town. Air has a deep and beautiful story, and some of the loveliest backgrounds ever seen in anime. It is originally based on a visual novel by Key, and spawned a 12 episode anime, a movie, several specials, and the classic phrase "gao gao stegosaurus". This is Ndi’s favorite anime of the year, and quite possibly her favorite anime of all time!
http://www.everything-paris.com/misuzu.gif
Silly Ndi, putting a neat GIF with her description. But talk about a bad draw for Air… Any way you look at it, something major is leaving this time.
but i like cool techno/future/power trip stuff more than self exploration/growingup/life lesson stuff.
so………….
AKIRA 4EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1@
The other two are strong enough without any help from me.
Ndi why is the first video being read as a wav file x_X ?
Since I haven’t seen Air and I liked Akira better than Spirited Away. I’ll probably watch Air tonight and see if it’s good.
I think I know what the problem might be. I can resend the first episode to you later if you would still like to see it. I’m sorry. ; ;
Anyways! I’d be happy to send some of Air to anyone else who might like to vote for it, and of course, it gets my vote as well.
edit: I GUESS NOT. so akira?
x a million.
Akira had a choppy, incomplete storyline and average animation ๐
Shows like Dragonball have "average" animation. Akira looks great :-\
Spirited Away – 5
Air – 8
Air made a wonderful run of it, but alas, it comes to a tie. And per the rules of this round, Akira wins by default. However, its relatively low percentage of the vote could cripple its ability to survive a tiebreaker in later rounds.
VS
Gungrave (submitted by Merl) – Based on the mediocre video game of the same name, Gungrave follows a character named Brandon Heat, who has supposedly risen from "beyond the grave" to get his revenge. It’s full of bad ass guns and fights and all the other stuff that is great about action anime, but what really makes Gungrave shine is its story, and the relationships between the characters. Gungrave ran for 26 episodes.
As I said last time, I’ll be voting against CCS. Sorry Ndi, but Gungrave is simply too absurdly awesome to not walk away with my vote.
Also, in addition to what Merl said about Gungrave, I just want to point out that over half the show is about Brandon’s rise through a mafia organization. Very dramatic. I thought the fights against all the mutant freaks in the second half were the lowest parts of the series. Still, it came back to end on a great note.
I haven’t seen much of the Gungrave anime yet, and what I saw was dull ๐
sorry Merl. ๐
i havent seen the others xD
dude where did Gundam come inn??
:smrt:
thus, making my vote extra special and awe inspiring!
"what will tact vote for?" they ask in anticipation!
drumroll please…..

Akira had a choppy, incomplete storyline and average animation
SAYS THE MAN THAT KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT ANIMATION.
I don’t need to know wines intimately to recognise when someone’s filled a bottle with vinegar!
Shows like Dragonball have "average" animation. Akira looks great
You’re right. Compared to DBZ, Akira looks snazzy. But i’d count DBZ ‘less than average’, so average still holds for Akira!
I’m not voting in this round, but I just wanted to add that Akira doesn’t have average animation and that anyone who says that is a dummyhead.
Thanks.
Hi kubi <3
But you do need to know wines to recognize that a wine is an average wine!
No, seriously. Animation quality isn’t something like art direction or an opinion of character designs where "every opinion is correct". I know a lot of people don’t like Otomo’s character designs because they’re not as outwardly stylish as others, but Akira’s a movie with a large budget that was used for some very above average animation. You can dislike the way it looks, but the fact is a film with average animation wouldn’t even be able to attempt to reproduce something like the opening motorcycle fight.
its just all over the place wich is too much for most people too handle
not that i understood it all from the first time i saw it(wich i pressume is the amount of times you watched the film)
but then again why the hell am i pointing this out.. its only the movie that singlehandedly brought anime to the west.. without any promotional support
its just all over the place wich is too much for most people too handle
You are clearly not familiar with the source material. The animated version is but a pale shadow of the manga. IMO, it was one of the worst adaptations ever.
not that i understood it all from the first time i saw it(wich i pressume is the amount of times you watched the film)
Of course not. Cause it leaves so much out. All you have is guesswork to fill in the blanks, whereas the manga provides much clearer exposition.
but then again why the hell am i pointing this out.. its only the movie that singlehandedly brought anime to the west.. without any promotional support
Bullshit. I would rape this comment with a detailed explanation, but I’ll simply say that it only garnered a cult following when it was released here, as did all the other anime films (Akira was just one of several) that were released around the same time.
I’m sure he has. But the movie is more of a retelling than an adaption. It changed the story drastically to fit the movie’s running time. It honestly does make sense on its own for the most part. I think a lot of the confusion comes in from trying to match the two. ie: in one Lady Miyako is a super important character and in the other she’s a crazy lady ranting on the streets that you probably think is a man. The one thing that the movie might not have been clear enough on was the Nezu subplot. I don’t remember offhand but I think he has almost no significant role in the movie and then he has that sudden confrontation with Ryu near the end. But if you read the comic then its "oh yeah, that guy".
but yeah the comic is much better, as is usually the case.
if your this predictable with chess i bet even my dumbass could easily handle you
i own the manga in Japanese, Dutch and English and have read it more then a dozen times
luckily i read it years after i’ve watched the anime wich in most cases is all the more rewarding as indeed theres loads of great stuff that the movie downright abandoned
but where is the so called guesswork?
Otomo cut out most of the subplots and a dozen of charakters and like Rezo said adapted it into a retelling instead of making an adaptation of the manga.
the only people to who it could have been really confusing was the Japanese as Otomo didnt even finish the manga at the point the anime got released
the only fact why most people really dont get the movie from the first viewing is because almost everyone expects a pure action/horror flic with no social commentary or anything involved.. they just expect good ol gratious violence
look at the dvd and especially the old vhs covers
its almost always badass kaneda you see on his bike.. that doesnt really give most people an impression of a movie with such huge visual metaphors and allot of charakter developement
but then again why the hell am i pointing this out.. its only the movie that singlehandedly brought anime to the west.. without any promotional support
Bullshit. I would rape this comment with a detailed explanation, but I’ll simply say that it only garnered a cult following when it was released here, as did all the other anime films (Akira was just one of several) that were released around the same time.
name 2 anime films that made such an impact
hell name one that made even half of the impact Akira did
and please
for my christmas present
try the detailed explanation!
i know that there was anime in the west before it but Akira opened up the doors and estabelished itself in most of the world as the first animated feature for grown ups and made people aware of the fact that there was more to animation then Disney and Looney tunes stuff
hell i think even the Akira manga was also one of the first manga licenses the usa had tho i’m not entirely sure of that
Also, I would update this today, but the shrine is being too erratic. I’ll try again tomorrow morning.
fuck yah, the shrine has been shitty for the past month. someone fix the fucking database or something. fucking laggy site. i got a cable connection and i can d/l at 500kb a second. (thats bytes, not bits like the fucking companies try to sell at) and this site takes forever and a day to load.
FIX THIS SITE!!! CHANGER SERVERS! I DON’T CARE. I’LL FUCKING DONATE FOR THE CAUSE!!
also prak: count rezo’s vote *_* ๐
Lupin III – 5
Gungrave – 4
Lupin squeaks by in a very competitive round to secure its place in the quarterfinals. Now for the last match of the wild card round.
VS
Area 88 (submitted by Prak) – Tricked by his best friend into joining the foreign brigade of a country fighting a civil war (a contract that will cost either $1.5 million or his life to break), ace pilot Shin Kazama flies dangerous missions every day, bloodying his hands to earn enough money to return to Japan and the woman he loves. Meanwhile, his old friend has sent a photographer to Area 88, the base where Kazama is stationed, to take a picture of Shin’s dead (or dying) face so he can use it to convince Shin’s girlfriend (whose father is extremely rich and powerful) that he won’t be coming back and she should marry him instead. Covers an old OVA release and a recent series, both of which are highly excellent–they also help fill in the void of good fighter combat anime–and remind me a lot of Leiji Matsumoto’s works.
VS
Wings of Honneamise – The tale of an alien race’s first steps into space. The Royal Space Force is an underfunded agency that’s viewed as nothing more than a joke by the rest of the nation. However, the government they serve has found another use for them: bait to start a war with another country. Now they must race against time to complete their launch in order to prevent the conflict.
anyway. for this round. i vote ranma 1/2. :p even though that area 88 sounds really really good.
Edit: Sorry for the double post.
Wings of Honneamise
there.
Ranma 1/2 – 3
Area 88 – 6
Wings of Honneamise – 8
And that concludes the wild card round, bringing some unexpected changes to the quarterfinal line-up. By the way, I just want to announce that I’ve already decided what the next edition of the rumble will be. I think it’ll throw you for a loop.
Ashita no Joe (wild card submitted by rezo) – One of the earliest sports anime, it is a classic series about a poor young drifter who reluctantly takes up boxing after being put in a youth prison for attempting to scam someone out of a large sum of money. From the early 70s, it does not follow the conventional style of contemporary sports anime but focuses on Joe’s struggles and isolation and is fairly tragic at times.
VS
Urusei Yatsura (wild card submitted by KtuluCJ77) – Urusei Yatsura, product of Ranma 1/2 and Inu Yasha creator Rumiko Takahashi, is the widely popular tale of unlucky schoolboy Ataru’s encounter with his accidental fiance, incidentally one of anime’s most recognizable "babes," the alien Lum. The property is represented in anime form in a 200+ episode television series, six movies, and ten OVAs.
This round is tough because it’s like REZO VS KTULU and rezo is my friend ๐
Also, I can’t choose either. Maybe you and rezo could both abstain as a mutual courtesy? ๐
Or we could take the courtesy of voting for the other’s pick. Would be the same as us voting for our own when the final count is done, BUT NICER.
Ashita no Joe
Now you vote for Lum and it’ll be like we were never here at all ever.
have it your way rezo
I vote for Urusei Yatsura
uresei for me
EDIT: I should have nominated Voltes V for the wildcard round! I don’t think it was there. ๐
its a good thing that Prak is voting for Joe!
Ashita no Joe – 3
Urusei Yatsura – 4
VS
Space Pirate Captain Harlock – One of the most recognizable names in anime, the notorious pirate Harlock travels the sea of stars in his near-invincible battleship Arcadia, fighting tirelessly for nothing more than his own honor and freedom, as well as the memory of his best friend. If my count is correct, this covers three series and one movie, although many of the characters have appeared in several other shows.
Although it breaks my heart to vote against BGC, I shall not break my perfect record of Harlock votes, for it is clearly the superior show.
=(!!

I vote for Space Pirate Captain Harlock

Captain Harlock – 7
Late update due to a very busy weekend. Pretty close match at the beginning, but a string of votes for BGC blew away the space pirate. Not enough hot chicks in it for you people or something? :p

Grave of the Fireflies – 2
lol @ fireflies.
lupin.
I apologize. ‘Twas merely ranting mindless dribble. And no I do not think others relatives are "whiny brats" either. I believe them to be model citizens with no delusions of fantastical intimacy with their selected viewings…whatever, nobody’s innocent when it comes to stuff like that. Everybody thinks about doing all sorts of stuff. They just fear judgement and hell and embarassment and ridicule and stoning and torching and pitchforks and being tomato(e)d in the stocks, so everybody holds their breath when they get urges and then they get heart disease from high blood pressure and suppressed hormones. You’re all perverts! Tact is honest and true! Stop lying to everyone for the mere act of feigning professionalism and honor when you are not innocent and just keep your mouths shut! Noone will be saved! Science is lord! Hyah!
wow..that should be in the ideology thread but i’m too lazy to copy so if you actually digested the entirety of my comment do not forget to wipe the spam off your face. haha.
oh and uh, Lupin..because Wings looks older.
That’s a stupid reason to vote for something. ๐
Also, it’s dead wrong. Lupin was a fairly low-budget show and it shows in its animation, whereas Wings of Honneamise had one of the largest budgets ever for an animated film. It was right on par with Akira in terms of expense, as well as animation quality.
I like Lupin but I’ll keep voting for Wings of Honneamise

Lupin vs. Akira for the finals! Tell the folks!
MOST OF YOU
Silly Odin. Venus Wars is not in this round.
Lupin III – 8
Wings of Honneamise – 10
The stage is set for the semifinal round. The last of the wild cards is set for a tough battle this time and the next match should be positively epic considering the comparisons between the entries.
Which one of these will proceed to the final round?
Urusei Yatsura (wild card submitted by KtuluCJ77) – Urusei Yatsura, product of Ranma 1/2 and Inu Yasha creator Rumiko Takahashi, is the widely popular tale of unlucky schoolboy Ataru’s encounter with his accidental fiance, incidentally one of anime’s most recognizable "babes," the alien Lum. I’m voting for Bubblegum Crisis cause it is pwnage and Urusei Yatsura is not (as much).
in short, i’m dissallusioned, dissapointed, and lost interest. :/
in translation, uresei and bgc suck! i vote for neither! :p
……..nah. i’ll go for BGC. i’m all for cyberpunkiness. :p
Anyway, seriously, I vote for Bubblegum Crisis because it’s one of the first animes I ever watched, and, also, because I believe that Bubblegum Crisis beats Urusei Yatsura hands down.
EDIT: Now are you happy.
BGC is gonna win anyway
How come I’ve never heard of Urusei Yatsura? I love Inuyasha and the creator.
How come I’ve never heard of Urusei Yatsura? I love Inuyasha and the creator.
A lover of Inuyasha? It’s no surprise you voted for Bubblegum Crisis
IMO..Urusei is a lot like Inuyasha and DBZ in terms of humor and plot neglect.
Well, you know what they say about Arcanine: He is a stupid.
"..in terms of humor and plot neglect." From what I remember of aforementioned titles then.
I TOP ARGUMENTS ON THE INTERWEB.InterNET. Touche.
Your mother.
Well, you know what they say about Arcanine: He is a stupid.
Urusei Yatsura – 6
So BGC progresses to the final round and will compete for the ultimate victory. It won’t have an easy time, however, because both of the contenders for the other spot are insanely strong.
Akira – Even the most casual of anime fans has probably seen Akira.

However, the government they serve has found another use for them: bait to start a war with another country. Now they must race against time to complete their launch in order to prevent the conflict.
This is a hell of an ironic matchup. Both of these came out around the same time, had insanely huge budgets, garnered massive critical praise, performed horribly at the box office, and showed people around the world what anime can be. Akira is undoubtedly the better-known of the two (at least in these parts), but I feel that Wings of Honneamise is the better film.
Only if you like shit films that suck.
Akira.
You’re a dingleberry rezo.
Akira nonetheless.
it still is.
You’ve made your point.
Akira though. I saw it first and it’s not like Wings has a chance anyway.
Who in a million years could have guessed that Akira would win this, it is from the very far left of the field, it is.
Wings of Honneamise is about a clan of mercenary assassins in feudal Japan who are hired by the descendant of legendary dragon Lord Inferno. It too features many crotch shots.
Akira – 11
From the original 64, only two now remain to battle for the crown.
VS
Akira – Even the most casual of anime fans has probably seen Akira.
Two different visions of a post-apocalyptic Tokyo. Two completely different types of storytelling. Akira definitely seems to be the favorite coming into this match, but we’ve seen upsets in this rumble before. Does Bubblegum Crisis have a chance or is it just more cannon fodder?
This is lame because in my opinion there are way better shows/movies/OVAs out there. OH WELL

Let the record show that I would rather be voting for CCS.
I’m a fan of Bubblegum Crisis but putting it against Akira its so obvious that Akira is the better anime.
LIIIIIEEEEZ
Let me continue from the last letter of your sentence, Prak:
ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz…..
No.
or is it just more cannon fodder?
yes.
AKIRA.
Also, the idea I was working with for the next edition isn’t working out very well, so there will probably be some downtime while I figure out whether to make it work or move on to something else.
Let the record show that I would rather be voting for CCS.
Mighty foolish
This is perhaps the single most retarded thing that has been said in this entire thread.
