Id suggest to start off with rpg maker 2003, very easy, yet many possibilities and it comes with a built in sideview battle system.
Once you get familiar to scripting, having used rpg maker 2003, I’d say try out xp and vx at the same time because both are good but each have their strength.

XP provides nice graphics in a whole, but the way you can customize VX blows XP out of the water.
My hardrive got earased a few months back, but before that I got into VX, and I’ve been a casual user of rpg maker since 2000 ( i started using it like 2001), anyways a few months ago a japanese sideview battle script for vx came out.
jesus christ it was a beautiful script, easy to adjust and everything!
Only problem was it was ALL in japanese.
I dont know shit about japanese but through trial and error I translated it ALL, everything was perfect.
I’d have loved to share that with you but….its all gone -.-
And I mean, the same was said about XP and now theres enough resources to go around for years.
VX uses ruby 2, its just a more powerful punch of a program.
Still, I wouldn’t mind tracking down the console versions though. They could be fun.

Despite: It does have tileset limits though, a lot of limits. In VX you can only have 5 slots of tilesets and that’s it… and everything is autotile based. In rmxp, you can add as many tilesets in the database as you want and without limit size on each of the files. Same in 2k3 but you have a limit in the tileset size.
TwistedReality77: Rpgmaker 2003 is easier than the PSX one, also graphics and music from rpgmaker for the consoles have already been ripped, so you can make an RPG in 2k3/XP using those graphics.
Also, it is confusing at first, everything is hard and impossible at first… you’ll only get better by confronting the situation. Read the help file entirely, then play around with the program, create stuff, practice, read tutorials for the things that you are not good at, play a lot of rpgs (commercial and RM), etc… and you’ll find out that you start learning a lot. I started the same way back in 2001 lol, and I’m still dealing with rpgmaker in general.

Also, I wanted to say, that you don’t need to know ruby to make a good game… you can always do the eventing old school, which is also possible on rpgmaker XP, in fact, even better. You will just have to bring up several of the functions that were lost like "show face, overworld vehicles" etc. Knowing scripting is a plus, and you can go really far when it comes to developing things the way you exactly want them to be, but then again, you can always download scripts, credit the author and just have all that impossible work done in an instant. As a matter of fact, most people who know how to script in RGSS/RGSS2 spend a lot more time making scripts to share it to everyone around.

RPG maker VX isn’t for lazy people at all, no RPG maker is, sure you can be lazy and use the basic RTP but if you got creativity you can break down any barrier and limitation that any maker program has.
