I probably will finish signing up for the game eventually, but at the moment I have no interest in playing it.
One, limited areas to roam, so far only five areas are available and three of them are starting areas. Add in that the areas are similar to FFXI’s to the point I’ve heard talk that the areas are just copy and pasted from FFXI, spruced up a bit and then made into FFXIV (Not 100% sure of that, but that is what I’ve heard from people in my Linkshell in FFXI). Add in that the zones are just too huge. Getting from point A to point B takes too much time.
Two, the character designs are just the same races of FFXI, altered slightly and graphically enhanced. SE had the opportunity here to create new and interesting races, instead they opted for the easy way out.
Three, and a minor gripe, the elimination of Auction Houses, so the only way to get any gil is by synthing/crafting which is a bugbear in itself. While I can understand SE trying to combat RMT by having no AH, it’s also a hindrance to players as well.
Four, and this is my main gripe… the payment option. Paying a third party and shady company, to pay SE so you can play? SE should’ve kept the payment option from FFXI via PlayOnline (SE’s own creation), as that was far simpler and easy to use. Those are my main reasons as to my dislike of FFXIV, and imo, they are valid reasons.
Will I get this myself for PC/PS3? Hell No. Apart from the four reasons I’ve stated above, there are other flaws to this game which I have heard about from others. I don’t know if SE can fix these flaws for the PS3 release, as to do so, would require a LOT of work. IMO, the PC version was rushed to release before World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is due for release (sometime in December this year I think) and also to try and build a player base for BioWare’s MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic (release sometime in the latter half of next year). I think that SE bit off too much with FFXIV, making it into FFXI Lite so to speak. Personally, I think SE should’ve just stuck with FFXI and release new expansions for it as only 40% of FFXI’s world (Vana’diel) has been explored so far.
The biggest gripes I had were:
The awful, tedious UI
Lag
The lack of content and whatever content there was was dull
Poor area design (mostly flat plains with no landmarks)
Uninteresting battle system made worse by the fatigue system
I really feel I should mention the UI again because it was just so absolutely dreadful. Instead of activating things with a right click, the game has you press a speech icon which just opens the menu which then allows you to do something simple, like ride an elevator.
I was looking forward buying it for PS3. Guess I’ll just save for Dragon Age 2 instead.
THEY DID?? I mean . . . yes, of course. It has one good element, you know. Yes, yes it does.
OMG THAT CHANGES THINGS. . . .
Unfortunately, one track can’t save what is currently a lacklustre soundtrack for a lacklustre game. Uematsu’s best work was still FFIX.
EDIT: I got the tracks mixed up – I really meant the track On Windy Meadows which is the theme for the La Noscea zone, and not the Gridanian theme (which is dull and boring). I love the theme of Limsa Lominsa as well (Navigator’s Glory). But the rest of my point about the FFXIV OST still stands. ๐
Yes, I’ve finally started playing FFXIV in case you couldn’t tell. ๐
If it isn’t true, you may want to consider FFXI though as it is still a good game (imo that is). If it is true, there’s life in the old girl yet.
Seriously though, as it’s a MMORPG like FFXI, any talk for FFXIV should be posted in there and the FFXI forum renamed FFXI and FFXIV Online… or something like that.
The game has numerous flaws, and the fact that SE has extended the first month free trial period to TWO months free trial, says a lot about how faulty the game is. The game was rushed before it was even remotely anywhere near being complete. In my linkshell in FFXI, all the people who left for FFXIV, have returned stating all the flaws it has. As I read on another forum:
"Final Fantasy XIV was the best thing to happen for Final Fantasy XI."
Add in the rumored three expansions apparently in pre-planning/pre-development for FFXI, which IF true, shows that there’s still life in FFXI which will probably bring back players who left FFXI for FFXIV as well.
The last part is referencing FFXI, and yes I’m a fan of it. We’re all fans of different games are we not?
The part in bold is a bit of a non-sequitur…

This has nothing to do with what I said…

My last comment:

That is a acknowledgment, that yes, I am a Final Fantasy XI fan. That is one of the many MMORPG’s available that I enjoy thoroughly. In short, "To each their own".
The guy said, "The latest patch fixed a lot of problems." Whether this is true or not isn’t really the issue here. You don’t know what problems have been fixed (nor do I) or what problems remain. All you’ve done is dismissed his post with, "The game has lots of problems" and then wanked over FFXI.
Your second post made even less sense. "FFXIV is not a good game because it was not successful." Um…
I really don’t understand how you’ve come to the conclusion that I said you couldn’t like or prefer FFXI.
With the amount of flaws FFXIV was released with, no amount of damn patches will fix them. The majority of them are that ingrained in the game code or w/e and that the only way to fix them would most probably be to rebuild the game from scratch. Like I said earlier, the fact that SE has extended the trial period from one month to two months says a lot about how bad the game is, imo. Have a read around on other sites/forums/etc, and see how many people have slammed FFXIV and SE for providing such a lacklustre and weak game.
Yes, I dismissed his post. FFXIV is garbage, absolute garbage. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I’m not trying to force my opinion on others.
Your second post made even less sense. "FFXIV is not a good game because it was not successful." Um…
It isn’t successful… not as SE hoped it would be.
I really don’t understand how you’ve come to the conclusion that I said you couldn’t like or prefer FFXI.
I never said you did. In my posts I never said that you stated a person couldn’t like or prefer FFXI. That’s up to the individual themselves to decide what to play and what to enjoy.
Your post makes no sense – it only serves to show how much of a Final Fantasy XI fan you are.
I agree whole heatedly. I come to this forum expecting some form of discussion – and all I get is a bunch of nerd rage an biased opinions -_-
On a side note – You really shouldn’t bother posting your opinion on a game; if all you have is 3rd party comments about it.
I’ve only responded to ONE of your posts here, and you say I’ve made it uncomfortable for you here? If you take offense at just one person’s post, which disagrees with you and then sulk {like what you have above}, then you will find your stay here far more uncomfortable as there are other members here who post far more derogatory and abusive comments that what I have.
It almost seems like you are attempting to troll. You take a simple comment, blow it completely out of proportion and throw in random comments. By looking at just your recent posts, it appears you greatly enjoy doing that. Which, I can safely say, offer absolutely nothing to the discussion or threads – and would be better posted to a blog site; and not on a forum.
So offering my opinion about the topic in question are just ‘throw in random comments’? I was offering my OPINION. Everyone has one, and mine is that FFXIV has numerous flaws and is a failure. You may disagree (which you do) and that’s fine. Just remember that not everyone agrees with what one person says. As my original post to you said:

FFXIV does have flaws, just like every other game. However with this one they are readily apparent from the very beginning of the game.
I raised four points earlier in this thread, however I shall repost them here for you to view:

If you like FFXIV, then fine. Go play it and enjoy it. Doesn’t mean that others will follow you. There are many other MMO’s available, so keep in mind that other people will have other opinions.
I agree whole heatedly. I come to this forum expecting some form of discussion – and all I get is a bunch of nerd rage an biased opinions -_-
‘Nerd Rage’? Whatever. ‘Biased opinions’? How so? I made my opinions regarding FFXIV from my own observations and experience in the world of FFXIV. I fail to see the validity of your argument.
On a side note – You really shouldn’t bother posting your opinion on a game; if all you have is 3rd party comments about it.
You’re referring to my wording in my first point…
That was due to incorrect wording on my part, as I have indeed played FFXIV and my opinions are based from my playthrough of it.
By the way, a forum is where you can offer your opinion and views, and I was not flaming you or anyone else with my posts.

*In Billy Mays voice* Talk about non-sequiter!
In DH defense:
You take DH as a troll? You didn’t see anything yet… Stay a little more & then you will learn to difference who are the trolls & who aren’t…
If DH is a troll then 99.9% of the members here are trolls too. Including myself of course.
In the meantime I’ll enjoy watching this
I read something somewhere just a little while ago about Square revamping the game; firing much of the staff who worked on its initial release and bringing in ‘veteran members’ from older FF titles to work on the Ps3 version of the game. Wow, like that’s really gonna do them any good at this point.
Square Enix is well and truely in damage control mode with the game at the moment – besides the massive ‘personnel restructuring’ in the development team, not only has the PS3 release been postponed indefinitely, the ‘free trial period’ has also been extended yet again ’til SE believes the game has improved in quality’.
Basically it means they’ll be losing money on this for a long time yet (at least FFXI broke even in it’s first six months of service, and still delivers a profit to SE by comparison).
I mean, there’ve been many great games to come out the last few years (Bioshock, Tomb Raider Underworld, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Age of Empires III, Half-Life 2, Resident Evil 5 [shut up, I’ve changed my mind about it] and the list goes on), but I regret to say that the vast majority of newer titles are just too forced and not given enough attention. Less focus on graphics, more focus on gameplay would be fantastic.
When I sit down and play Final Fantasy VI, or IX, or X, what stands out to me more than the actual graphics are the visuals they imply (sort of painting more so a picture in my head of what’s there and tugging at my creative side) rather than shoving every literal detail in my face. That, along with the music (of which XIII is the most severely lacking), the layouts of places, the colors and the little intricacies of the storyline. I don’t dwell on graphics; I dwell on everything else.
I was at Best Buy earlier today to burn a little Christmas money on some electronic entertainment, and I noticed FFXIV over there with all the PC games, packaged all fancy in this big tall box like it were the holy grail and I thought . . . Wow, you poor bastards won’t give up on it, eh? Then some kid working there asked me if I needed help and I said Nah, but Square does. He laughed and said XIV sucks. I agreed, even though I’ve never played it, and never will. Then we struck up a convo about XIII and I told him I liked what I played. He was shocked; I mean, his jaw dropped and he literally was speechless. I shrugged and just laughed, quoting Death’s Head by saying ‘To each their own’, but he thought I was crazy. Ah well, to each their own. Er, did I say that already?
At any rate, I’m rambling because I’m excited because I finally got credit on my PSN. YAY ME! ๐
