Thanks bobtheknob for this great post. I have always been a big fan of the underrated Howard Hanson.

Hanson is wonderful… these recordings are notoriously bad.Hmmm, considering that this set received a combined total of no less than seven Grammy Award nominations (not to mention a host of other awards that are listed on the box back jpg in my post above), plus a quick scan of the Schwarz-Seattle Hanson recordings listed on Amazon shows a whole lot of 4 and 5 star ratings, I would say your opinion is in the minority. (Not to mention that, as a lifelong collector of orchestral recordings and also a former professional orchestral musician myself, I’m no slouch when it comes to evaluating recordings.)

I also notice that you didn’t bother helpfully suggesting anybody who would ostensibly be a "good" recording. Care to add such helpful information below? (Please make it somebody other than Hanson conducting a bunch of amateur college students in the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra in 50-year-old recordings. Just because Hanson is the composer does not automatically make his recordings definitive. It makes them authoritative, but that’s not the same as definitive.)

The Gerhardt Hanson 2nd (which you shared here a few months ago, IIRC) is a fairly good one. It was recorded in 1967, 49 years ago, and the sound quality is sketchy at best. But then, what about the other six symphonies, not to mention all the other Hanson works here? Whose recording of all the other material would you recommend against these Schwarz-Seattle Grammy Award nominees?

One of the basic principles for interacting in a social environment is: praise in public and criticize in private.

Considering that around here posting is voluntary and viewing posts is optional, criticisms about music preferences are not suitable.

I just do not understand why some people do not follow these procedures in this forum.

Obviously, no one is obliged to like everything that is posted, but if someone did not like the content offered in a post, just delete it and keep quiet.

There is no sense in someone expressing their displeasure about something that is offered free of charge and with no restriction, that costed some time for someone to post it, and what is more, downloading the material is a matter of personal choice, no one is obliged to.

I am not an expert on anything, let alone in music, but I enjoyed the music made available here.

So, thank you very much bobtheknob for the great work.
